This piece brought back some painful memories from my childhood. My father was
a loyal subscriber to the "other" Salt Lake newspaper. Many times we
came home to find him enraged over an article detailing that black entertainers
in the 1950s were made to enter the hotel through the service entrance rather
than the front door. A couple that I remember were Marion Anderson and Nat
"king" Cole. Most simply avoided the indignity and booked into the
Hotel Newhouse. I wonder if Louis Armstrong entered through the service
They left out me and my wife on our Honeymoon
Thanks for the referal for Louis Armstrong with Danny Kaye. That was amazing!
While I enjoyed the photos, I would really have liked to have known when and why
these celebrities were at the hotel. In addition, if you are going to mention
that someone is a pulitzer prize winner in fiction, it would be well advised to
include the name of the book.
This is great to see some of the famous people who came to the Hotel Utah. It
is a beautiful building. Thank you for writing about this. The first
picture is of Louis Armstrong. I found a wonderful song he did with Danny Kaye.
It is 'When the Saints Go Marching In". What real talent they both had.
You can go to youtube to watch it. Just type in their names. You will be
smiling afterwards. Hope you enjoy it.
