"I don’t think you should count out BYU just yet. BYU has a great team for this season. If we beat you, you’re going to say that Utah let us win which is stupid. If BYU wins then the better team won."
    ------------------
Anyone who has been around this rivalry would never count the other side out. And Utah fans don't count BYU out.

But where is this notion of BYU having a great team this yr. coming from? This team went 6-6 last yr. in the regular season.

Zach Wilson went 3-3, beating only teams who finished ranked worse than #100. And the new RBs have yet to take 1 snap in this offense, which will be a new offense for them. BYU loses their best defensive players in Wakitaki and C. Kaufusi to boot.

    But, ok....

About as hilarious and ridiculous as you making this comment on a Utah article.

The very definition of ironic. You are right about one thing. You just can't make this stuff up.

You do realize that the very 1st comment on this article was a BYU fan ripping the PAC12, right?

    Talk is cheap!

I have my application for my Rose Bowl tickets (membership has it's privileges). I'll be there regardless of who's playing.

The PAC-12 deserves to have the best team representing the conference against the Big 10.

I don't recall Deseret News telling BYU fans to temper their optimism in 2008 when BYU wans were printing Perfection t-shirts in August. Then in 2009, they were celebrating a national championship in week one:

"People danced in the streets. They hugged perfect strangers. They lit off fireworks. And in general, they celebrated and celebrated and celebrated...

BYU fans formed impromptu gatherings at places like LaVell Edwards Stadium, the Marriott Center, and the Wilkinson Center, among others, and several hundred of them showed up at the Provo Municipal Airport to welcome home the team when it landed at 1:45 in the morning....

With the BYU students corralled behind a string of orange cones, BYU's coaches and players gave high-fives to their admirers before Mendenhall took a mic and briefly addressed them...

"It's cool. It's really cool," said Jorgensen. "I've never seen anything like this before. Not many people have the opportunity to have this experience, so it's cool."

Well...not ALWAYS! Sometimes the "lesser" team packs their alumni in the replay booth in a "must-win" game scenario, in order to influence the outcome to THEIR favor instead!

That said, in 2015, that didn't happen. So yeah, the better team won that one.

    July 16, 2019 11:16 a.m.

Ironically, Mike Sorensen should be tempering the expectations of the national media pundits, not Utah fans.

It's fun to have Phil Steele, Athlon, ESPN, 247, CBSSports, etc. say nice things about U of U football. But Utah fans are tempered. We know it takes a LOT to have a special yr. and to do so in a P5 conf. is even more challenging.

Phil Steele (and others), also has/have the PAC12 as the #3 P5 conf. So, the BYU narrative of the P12 South being the worst division in the worst P5 conf. is just echo chamber material among their fan base.

Utah has a good team this yr. Hope they meet some or all of their own goals. Either way, I'll be cheering them on.

Don't forget their new talking point of future conference realignments will result in Utah being kicked out of the P5. Hoping that something will happen versus reality is lost on many.

"Sure would put a damper on your high hopes if they beat the utes this year and ruin their whole season up front"
    -------------------

It's never fun to lose. But the BYU game has literally nothing to do with the PAC12.

You do realize that Utah could lose to BYU and still with the PAC12, and go to the Rose Bowl, right?

I'm not predicting they will go to the Rose Bowl, but it has nothing to do with the BYU game.

I will say that it is VERY unlikely that if Utah lost to BYU that this Utah team would be good enough to win the PAC12 and in turn play in the Rose Bowl.

BYU has lost 15 games the last 2 yrs alone. They went 6-6 last yr. in the regular season. Which was better than their 9 loss season the prior yr. So, there has been improvement.

The Jazz have mortgaged a lot this offseason to compete for a Championship. They better hope they can compete because they threw a lot of their resources into competing now at the expense of the future. There really is no better time for fans to have high expectations. The past decade has been leading up to this moment. The Utes, similarly, have been waiting for the stars to all align for them to be in the position of preseason favorite. Of course a lot has to go right for that to happen but, just like the Jazz, this season has presented them with the best opportunity, for at least a Conference Championship, that they have had. If now is not the time for enthusiastic expectations (for the Utes and Jazz) than there really is not a time for hope.

The entire world hears about how "great BYu's team will be every preseason".......and then...... the games are played. To be honest, BYu is in a VERY bad way this year and all years to come. They don't have the program, players or coaches...........D3 quality is BYu football as of this very day in fact.

To answer your speculation..........Utah will beat BYu. It will go down. Also, it will be an absolute "miracle" if they go 6-6 in 2019. I see 5-7 at best, considering the whY has ZERO depth and very little talent.

Oh the hype and worrying about one's team in July. Utah needn't worry about BYU, after all the Utes have beaten the lowly Cougs for 8 straight years. And since many of the pundits have picked Utah to win the PAC-12 conference and go to the Rose Bowl, why should they worry about BYU? Seems the Utah fans are fixated on that poor team from Provo which I don't get. All Utah needs to do is stay focused and practice hard, they'll be ready for BYU and no doubt BYU will be accepting their fate and another flop against the mighty Utes. So enjoy the hype and relax Utah fans, it's only July and you have all that glory, championships, Rose Bowl and bragging rights to look forward to.

Ho hum, Mike Sorensen. Nobody's talking about the Portland Trailblazers. Yeah that team. The ones who not only did nothing except get to the Western Conference finals on the backs of Dame and CJ, as you well acknowledged. But who also added some great pieces in Hassan Whiteside and Kent Bazemore, as well as inking Rodney Hood, while making addition by subtraction in ditching Evan Turner, Moe Harkless, Meyers Leonard and Al-Farouq Aminu. None of them poor players, all of them a detriment to making the top tier.

The Jazz were good last season, we were a 50 win team. We got significantly better this off season. Yes there are 5 or 6 teams in the west that could potentially end up in the finals, but for the first time in decades we are one of them. There is absolutely no reason to temper our enthusiasm.

This is the best team the Jazz have had in twenty years. The Utes have the most talented team that they have ever had. Nobody is suggesting that the Rose Bowl and the NBA Finals are a lock, but clearly both teams can compete for those outcomes. So what's wrong with being optimistic?

  • ekute Layton, UT

  • Brave Sir Robin San Diego, CA

I see the spin doctors at the Deseret News are at it again. Every Utah fan around here has actually been extremely measured about our chances. Yes, we know we have a good team. But we also know we have some holes (o-line and kicking game), we know how hard it is to succeed with a PAC12 schedule, we know injuries will happen.

Ironically, the only people around here who are being blustery about Utah are a couple BYU-P fans.

The rest of the BYU-P faithful could stand to tone down the rhetoric a bit, but that's typical for this time of year. And Jazz fans have been completely insufferable. Yes, the Jazz got better, but so did every other contender in the west. Jazz won't finish in the top 4 this year.

  • brian of ohio Kent, OH
    July 15, 2019 8:44 a.m.

I think most fans are tempered in their optimism. I believe the Utes have as good a shot of the Rose bowl as they ever have and maybe ever will given the number of NFL level returning seniors they have this year + USC, UCLA both down. The article lists Arizona, Washington, USC, and WSU as threats. I am just as concerned about Cal and UCLA. UCLA showed great improvement end of last year and will only be better under Kelly in his second year. Cal has an amazing defense and a pick 6 + potential low scoring affair could mean the team who scores 10 wins. Still, it is the fact we are favored that is exciting. We are respected.

Same for the Jazz. I am excited at their potential. For all we know these guys can't gel and we never live up to hype or an injury can strike. However, for the first time in years you have an offense that has the POTENTIAL to be a top 5 offense along with a potential top 5 defense. I mean 4 players capable of scoring around 20ppg consistently. If you throw in Conley takes better control of the ball than Rubio and Davis is a beast of a rebounder and you have all the ingredients to win ball games in the playoffs where every play makes a difference.

    Go Utes, Go Jazz

What exactly was the point of this article? I'm a Jazz fan and not a Ute fan but I haven't seen too many of either thinking that NBA Finals or Rose Bowl is guaranteed. I think most of both fan bases are being pretty realistic actually. Also both the Jazz and Ute Football have a good chance at special seasons this year so we'll see.

Also, I wasn't going to mention BYU since the article has nothing to do with my Cougars, but others have in the comments already, mostly silly Ute fans making baseless comments about BYU fans being overly optimistic. Most BYU fans are predicting 7 to 8 wins (which is about what ESPN's FPI predicts). I haven't heard a single BYU fan predict an undefeated season, and only a handful of blue goggled fans predict even a 10+ win season. BYU fans also are being quite realistic. Personally I'd take a guaranteed 8 win season at this point, but hope they prove me wrong of course.

Ether way, I can't wait for football and basketball seasons! Regardless of the outcomes, it is my favorite time of year. Go Cougars! Go Jazz! Also I'm no hater (but love my state) so a sincere good luck to the Utes and Aggies (except when you're playing us of course).

How many have actually said that the Jazz are "primed for an NBA title run"? Certainly the talk about the Jazz has not "centered" on that. It's mostly centered on who in the West has made good free agent moves. It's odd how the Des News moderators ask us not to speculate, but the Des News writers are allowed to throw out their version of public opinion as though it's simple and basic common knowledge. What's good for the readers might be good for the writers as well.

  • utahute69 Laguna Niguel, CA
    July 14, 2019 11:56 p.m.

I don't know about the Jazz, but I really don't need the Deseret News to give me a tour of Utah's Football schedule. Yes, Utah has a very difficult schedule, since they play in the PAC 12 and have Washington (away) and Washington State (at home), from the Northern Division. Right and if Utah looses any games they will reduce the chances of them winning their division and remaining ranked in the top twenty-five. Most Utah fans are at least reasonable and understand the both the upside and downside of playing in a big conference. On the other hand, we still have BYU fans talking up how great their schedule is because they are playing three PAC 12 teams and Tennessee. Take those four teams out of their schedule and they have a fairly poor group of teams to play other than Boise and USU. Yet we keep hearing them talking about winning all their games this year and going for the national championship. I trust the Deseret News isn't prepared to tell those BYU fans to calm down and be prepared to take any bowl that is offered.

    @boris

“(Utah) plays in the weakest division of the weakest P5 conference.”

Yet, if byu beats both Utah and USC (both from the above-mentioned division), their fans will be flooding the comment boards, bragging how great their team is because they defeated 2 teams from a powerful P5 conference.

Oh well, no worries. They won’t defeat either team.

Ute fans should absolutely be optimistic. They play in the weakest division of the weakest supposed P5 conference.

The MWC mountain division is stronger than the PAC 12 south so the Utes should win the division. Vanderbilt or Kansas would win that division.
