"What is really rich is that Utah "fans" continue to use BYU as a measuring stick and benchmark! How very frantic and emotional of you!!!!!!!!!!"
    -------------------------

Just because you say this in every comment section doesn't make it true. Although, it will create a "BYU narrative" for your 'BYU fan' echo chamber.

BYU's m.o. is to beat a bunch of bad teams and claim great success.

Classic example: In independence. BYU had a 10 win season where they did not finish ranked in any poll.

In fact, that yr. they were the only 10 win team to NOT finish ranked. While a few 9 win teams did finish in the top 25 of the polls.

Why didn't a 10 win BYU finish ranked? They played a truly easy schedule. They beat a bunch of bad teams and call it success.

Don't mistake Ute fans proving BYU fan comments wrong, as using BYU as a measuring stick.

It's just banter. And thanks for commenting on a Utah article.

We’ll be more experienced this year & have a stud OC, not to mention having a bunch of NFL players dotting our roster, particularly on D.....Our D is plain SICK.

And our Hallandale trio will make a statement of their own, just like they did last October before injuries derailed them.

Potential-wise, the sky’s the limit, period.....But gotta remain healthy.

We’ll make a statement to the rest of our conference in Game 1, stating we are to be feared, via ‘11 style against byu-p.

    Beware!

    Go Utes!

I think where Utah finishes in the Pac12 actually depends more on how much their opponents have improved than it does on Utah. Utah is a known commodity this season with so many returning players. Other teams like Oregon, ASU, and UW who recruited well for the 2019 cycle and obviously have talent may be better than writers are giving credit for because they just don’t know.

Should be fun to see how 2nd yr coaches and the Pac12 do this year. I’m especially interested to see how Mel Tucker does at Colorado. He was a great DC but sometimes that doesn’t translate.

Maybe your Ute fans don't say it out loud, because a special season is not necessary. Utes won the division with 3 losses, could have won it with 4 losses. The Utes don't need to go undefeated to repeat.

    ------------

Yes but they're thinking CFP as being special and being a 3-4 loss team won't get it done.

Rather than participate in the classless comments that have absolutely nothing to do with the article being commented on, I will say, without hesitation, that the Utes will win the PAC, not just the south division, but the league championship game. I don't know if they will be invited to play in the NCAA title chase. If they lose more than one game, I don't think so. If they go unbeaten or end with one loss they have a good shot. I hope they lose in Provo, highly unlikely though that outcome is.

Whitt has had a special season in the past. He can do it again. You may forget 2008?

Us Ute fans aren't affraid to predict a special season. We just know how hard it is to have one.

If undefeated is a "special season" BYU fans predict that every yr. but they have only done it 1 time EVER.

Utah did it 2 times in 5 yrs. And can do it again.

Utah has the team and coaching to have a special season, even if it's not an undefeated one. But a lot goes into that.

We are optimistic but nobody, not even Clemson or Alabama, can guarantee it.

I love how the little blue brothers like to weigh in with how the Pac12 stacks up against the other P5 conferences, like they have a frame of reference.
It's like someone claiming to be able to do calculus because they completed math 101
    --------------

it's not rocket science, all you have to do is look at the power conferences like the SEC, Big10, Big 12, ACC and see:

    - TV payouts for the power conferences like the SEC, Big10, Big12 and ACC dwarf that of the Pac12 (in some cases it's nearly double),

    - how infrequently Pac12 teams get picked to play in the CFP compared to the power conferences like the SEC, Big10, Big12 and ACC (Pac12 teams have occupied 2 out of a possible 20 spots since CFP inception)

makes it pretty simple math that even a 5th grader could do in their head that nationally, the Pac12 isn't very highly regarded by ESPN or the power brokers in college football compared to power conferences like the SEC, Big10, Big12 and ACC.

BYU will Expose how weak the QB and O-Line are. and the kicking game is terrible. the u is going to have a 7-5 year. third in the south be hide USC and ASU . The u cant handle Preseason Hype. they have already put them selves in the CCG and haven't taken one snap. I dont know whos more to blame the Fans or Hammy for thinking its in the Bag Already.

Why is everybody so big on UW? They will be breaking in a new qb and lost some playmakers to the NFL. The league crown is Utah's to lose, it's that simple.

    --------------

Because Chris Peterson may be the best coach in the conference and he recruits extremely well. The last freshman QB they had to break in was in 2015 and they were in Peterson's 2nd year as coach.

He's had time now to fill his recruiting pipeline to the degree that they don't need to rebuild, just reload. They're a deep and talented team with a smart coach who will make you pay if you overlook him.

  • Gruncle Ralph Salt Lake City, UT

With the Pac12 being the weakest of the p5 conferences and numerous traditional power teams struggling in the conference, this is Utah's best chance to date to claim a Pac12 title and get to a major bowl game.

I have many ute fan friends who are thinking "special season" but afraid to say it out loud or hope too hard for it because in years past Whitt has always found a way to shoot himself in the foot when they've had opportunities to win their division outright, get to the CCG, etc.

This year could be different. Their division is the weakest its been since they joined and the conference overall is the weakest it's been since they joined. It's all on Whitt and staff to keep the team focused.

Why is everybody so big on UW? They will be breaking in a new qb and lost some playmakers

    ----
Everyone is so big because of Chris Peterson. He has proven he doesn't have down years, he only reloads. Just look at Boise St. UW lost a lot of guys, but have had top tier recruiting the last 4 or 5 years. I expect them to be at the top. Their QB may be new, but he has experience from Georgia and was 5* talent. Their D Coord is every bit as good as Scalley, although Scalley is turning out to be quite the coach. I could see him be our next HC when Whit retires.

I think Utah has more proven talent with less potential talent than UW, but the polls have us basically equal. I think Utah wins the conference if: Offense keeps turnovers in check, they learn the O fast enough to beat USC (they ended the year pretty good), and Utah stays healthy.

  • JackRyanSLC Salt Lake City, UT

My fellow Ute peeps...don't waste your time engaging in posting diatribes with our BYU friends. It is very simple...we are making steady, incremental progress, year after year while they continue to put lipstick on a pig in their rationalizations, justifications, and attempted slams against us. We might have our ups and downs, but the trend is definitely upward since 2004 and will only get better. Stay the course, continue to donate, continue to show up to home and away games, and you will observe us continuing to increase the gap between the two programs. Sitake will keep BYU relevant, but Independence, Honor Code, and administration inflexibility will continue to hold the program back and not allow them to be better than a 6-6 to 8-4 type team...and this is with 5 guaranteed wins every year because of the poor competition. Truth hurts...allow the BYU fans to live in the past and take shots at the PAC12 as they have had a few down years...just look at the facts. Our talent, depth, facilities, revenue, and continued increased relevance is all you need to focus on...it is headed in the right direction. #goutes

I am not sure how we can know what the actual SOS is going to be until the season is over.

So, silver platter? I'd hold off on claiming that for now.

USC, UCLA and Arizona are all thought to be much better this yr. v. last yr. Colorado as well.

Utah's final SOS last yr was #26 (Clemson was #25). If those teams are better, isn't it reasonable that Utah's SOS may be similar? Those teams will improve but Ute's don't play Stanford or Oregon, but Cal in very much improved and Ute's play USC and UW on the road, etc.

No schedule in the PAC12 is a cake walk by any means. But Utah has the talent, experience and coaching to win the PAC12 this yr.

This is the weakest pac schedule any team has ever had. This is being handed to them on a silver platter unless UW has a better than expected team this year after losing so many of their playmakers. It will be embarrassing for them if they don't win the South. I will believe they can win the conference after they have done it. They blew a couple of good opportunities over the past 5 years.

    Minnesota Ute:

Can’t really blame the ankle-biting coog fans. BYU-P is so far removed from national relevance, the fans can only celebrate being on somebody’s preseason SOS ranking (for which 3 Pac12 games is largely responsible), yet they jealously diss the Pac12.

I suppose interesting article. If you read through the whole thing, you realize he just made predictions based on hype anyway.

Utah's S&P is lower this coming year than last, however with almost EVERYONE coming back, I can't see how that is likely.

Likewise, he predicts Utah's best D player as Penisini. If that is the case then the D-line is going to be sick considering the other 3 are likely Anae, Fotu, and Tupai. (Fotu made ESPNs preseason First team All America listing while him and Anae made Phil Steeles preseason 3rd team). That is 3 players who are on All American lists just on the D line. If Moss and J Johnson both have great years, it isn't outside of their talent range to be on that list as well. Those guys are thought to be top 3 players at their position.

I see Utah having 2+ players on the All American list by the time those guys are done, and no they won't be Punters and Kickers this time around.

Where ever the Utes finish this years pre-season talk says a lot about their status on the national stage. They have been the premier football program in the State for the past 15 years, and one of the West's best the past decade. This year will determine whether they take the next step and become one of the teams talked about on a yearly basis on the national stage. Kyle and the athletic department, along with strong community support, have done a great job building a strong, proud program and we're all hoping they take the next step to the National Stage on January 1st in Pasadena.
