    ZW's bowl game was a great game. Taking nothing from him on that. I think the kid can be good and I am cheering for him to have a good career.

    He is, after all, a huge Ute fan.

    Here's the thing. most BYU fans seem to have reset expectations for ZW because of that specific game. That is a huge mistake.

    I will tell you now that that game is an anomaly. And even with that game, ZW has yet to beat a team ranked higher than #100 in the nation. It's true.

    He lost to #84 and didn't do well in that game.

    Once Utah woke up and played in the 2nd half, BYU had almost 100 total yards in the 2nd half and Utah went 35-7, to come back and win.

    BYU gets Utah's full attention this yr., and they will be eager to play, and win. This is NOT a trap game and I predict it won't be close. Utah by 3 scores.

    Go Utes!

    "Ya know pards, Utah’s lucky string of skin-of-your-teeth wins will end this August."
    --------------------

    Says the surprisingly arrogant fan of a team that has lost 15 games in the last 2 yrs.

    We like Huntley as Utah fans. We think he can be good, but nobody says he's 'special'.

    Trevor Lawrence won the national championship game in like his 9th start, as a true freshman last yr. Who cares what number of start it was for ZW. He tore it up v. Hawaii in his 1st start. You either have it or you don't. Zach isn't special. But like Huy

    Yet, Zach Wilson went 3-3 as a starter in the regular season, beating ONLY team that were ranked worse than #100, and you all think he is very special and a certain Heisman winner.

    BYU hasn't finished a season ranked in the AP in a decade. And there is literally NOTHING that indicates they will take the HUGE step they'd need to take to be as good as you think they will be this yr.

    Ya know pard......The game won't be close this yr. Utah by 3 scores for #9 in a row.

    Zach Wilson did MUCH better in his SIXTH game started as a True Freshman,

    than Tyler Huntley did in his TWELVETH game started in his THIRD season:

    Tyler vs UNI (8-6) - 20 of 31, 286 yds, 64.5%, 0 TD, 0 Int, 48 long, 7 sacks, 42.9 QBR

    Zach vs WMU (7-6) - 18 of 18, 317 yds, 100.0%, 4 TD, 0 Int, 70 long, 3 sacks, 321.3 Rating

    Zach Wilson may be a good QB, that had an outstanding game against a bad team. ZW isn't special at the QB spot.

    Going 3-3 in the regular season, only beating teams that finished the season ranked worse than #100, including the bowl win, tells me enough to know he isn't special.

    I like and pull for the kid. He is, after all, a huge Utah fan. I also think he can be good but BYU fans have this habit of elevating players, in their collective minds, to a height they could never achieve.

    Zona,

    Why does it need to be a comparison?

    Huntley made solid improvements, he's entering his senior year, and we'll see if he picks up where he left off, some do some don't. We'll see if AL gets pass-happy with the new scheme and how huntley deals with it. hopefully he improves his smart game. We'll see how Utah's OL goes about replacing players. A lot to see, I'm not a fan of his style of play despite the rankings, but that's just me.

    Totally and completely unrelated to Tyler Huntley:

    I'm encouraged by watching Zack Wilson play. He makes smart reads in terms of where he places the ball and he's quick the way he puts the ball where it needs to be. He leads a team as a little kid that is used to having QBs who have 2 or 3 kids already. The OL is making improvements, with Grimes they have to, and Grimes is likely going to make improvements as an OC this year.

    They don't compare, you can't compare them. 2 different people, different OCs and systems, different lines, different opponents. One could be an NFL MVP and the other could coach Jr. High and teach math and it still doesn't define who's "better" in college, it's a matter of opinion, and you stated yours well.

  • ArizonaUte SLC, UT

    @one liner - Dallas, TX

    Yep, this is why they play.

    Huntley was certainly on a tear before he got injured last yr. In his last 4 games:

    73.3% completion
    7 TDs to 2 INTS
    approx 1,000 passing
    2 rushing TDs
    40+ points per game
    QB rating of 172

    Huntley did this against overall better competition than Wilson faced.

    I don't think this is a debate at all had Huntley stayed healthy. But he didn't so here we are.

    I don't think there is one Utah fan who isn't pulling for Wilson to have a good career in general.

    So, if Wilson is better than Huntley, but Utah wins the PAC12 and goes to the Rose Bowl, does anyone think Utes fans care for one second?

    And how is BYU's OL suddenly good? They weren't last yr. I think there is more hype there than substance.

  • one liner Dallas, TX
    June 19, 2019 11:09 a.m.

    Huntley is certainly good enough to start for Utah and too good to bench, but he's not the future and isn't special. Unless he leads Utah to an epic season he's not moving up to the next level.

    Wilson could become special, he had early moments of brilliance, he's smart, and quick, and young, a lot of future potential there. I agree that he hasn't arrived.

    Hall and Rising are both very interesting other prospects at both schools, Hall will push Wilson to be better and BYU better figure out how to let Jaren contribute because he's too good of an athlete to hold on the bench. Rising can't really push Huntley to be better because he's only in practices, but could be a great QB for the next 3 seasons.

    Best of luck to all athletes on both teams.

    @Aliluminar - Orem, UT

    I think the "Huntley being huge" comment is relative. He came into Utah at 6'1" like 170. Now he is 205, and about 15 lbs of that has come on in the last 12 months. And it's impressive weight.

    Huntley weighs more than ZW and is a couple inches shorter. He is definitely more developed at this point.

    And according to Athlon, Huntley is the #16 ranked QB in college football. ZW is the #46.

    Ute's didn't create that ranking. And who knows if they are right. But that is what a national publication put forward. Like it or not.

    Utes like this one, BYU fans not as much. Regardless it doesn't impact how they play.

    I think both can have great seasons.

    Huge BYU fan here, but want to discuss this from a realistic perspective. Last year's OL was less than good and I actually agree with some of the Ute posters on this point. It has been the clear weakness of this team for several years running. We need some more Trent Whitings - real strong men, weight lifter types with a bull mentality on the line that wont be pushed around. I am being realistic, but hopeful that their experience will help the OL play better this year. They did start a couple of freshman and maybe that will pay off this year. Not holding my breath however. Just play the best whether they are freshman or not.

    Wilson gives this team a good chance to make some major strides this year. There will be some upsets this year because of him and some strong Tight Ends and improved Running Backs. He did so well last year because of his mobility which sort help offset the weak line play.

    I am in wait-and-see mode with Zach. We really don't know if his throwing shoulder has healed or will ever be 100% again. He showed nice promise last season, but a dominating performance against a middling Western Michigan team is not overwhelming evidence of greatness. I also am not convinced yet that he gives BYU the best chance to win on Saturdays. Let us see more of Hall, who appears to be an outstanding athlete, and, to the eye, looks to be the thicker and stronger quarterback. Why not let Hall and Wilson battle it out for number 1 in training camp this summer rather annoint post-op Zach the starter out of the chute?

    @CougarForever - Holladay, Utah

    Currently Huntley is YOKED. You have clearly not seen the before and after photo's of Huntley (and Jaylen Johnson) on twitter. He's bulked up and has a rifle for an arm. Huntley should be more durable and very good this yr.

    Bushman is a play maker. Wilson has shown flashes but has honestly only beaten teams ranked worse than #100. That's real. #84 NIU beat ZW and BYU, in Provo.

    BYU's OL should be ok. But they were ranked #74 in 'sacks allowed' and #81 in 'tackles for loss allowed' last yr. And 8 of your 12 opponents, last yr., were pretty soft, while some of them were VERY soft.

    I don't think you have any grounds to stand on to make a legit claim to the OL or Wilson being special at this point. Lot's to prove. And the schedule to start is going to be rough.

    Utah's DL v. BYU's OL? I'll take Utes DL all day, every day, and twice on Saturdays.

    Wilson looks very good, not only in the Twitter video showing him throwing to his father but especially in the Twitter video showing him working out (he looks absolutely incredible). He certainly doesn't appear "tiny" or lacking muscle mass and the moniker of "lil' Zachary" just doesn't fit. Wilson looks more physically solid than either Huntley or Shelley (at 6'3", Wilson has a height advantage also).

    Regarding QB comparisons -- last year Wilson performed much better against a good defense (Utah's) as a freshman than Huntley did as a junior against a softer defense (UCLA's). Huntley likely would lose his starting spot to Wilson if Utah had offered Wilson a scholarship.

    @Utah-Hawaii Alum

    "Also, the whY has no playmakers or O-line ... "

    You can start with Wilson or Bushman as playmakers.

    BYU's O-line returns a ton of experience and is projected to be one of the best o-lines in the west this year. [Empey was the 7th highest graded center in all of college football last year per Pro Football Focus. They grade Christensen as the second highest returning sophomore tackle in the country. Both made the Freshman All-American list last year.] It is Utah's o-line that is suspect.

    113.8 - Clean Passer Rating

    I do so hope ZW starts from game 1. One of my favorite observations from last years Holy War was how for a good portion of the game he ran with reckless abandon until a certain point in the game and someone taught him a lesson. After that he seemed much more reserved with his running. (this is not a dig, its just early on he ran into defenders a lot, he got knocked good once and then stopped like he realized 'maybe I'm not invincible').

    Im looking forward to a good game and being a good guest for the Cougar host who is gracious enough to invite me into his home to enjoy the game with.

Wilson has shown us everything he had. I worry that Hall would give the Utes fits, since there isn't much film on him.

    Reading between the lines, barring further injury, there won’t be a competition for starting QB. There may be a battle for 2nd string but I figure Hall has that wrapped up.
