Some people do like to criticize Trump over “EVERYTHING” (and he certainly provides plenty of fodder), but this controversy over July 4 is more than just a petty personal gripe by folks who "don't like" our Supreme Leader.

One self-centered, self-absorbed person who fancies himself as a king and emperor is trying to co-opt and corrupt the holiday that honors the founding of our country. This aspiring Caesar wants all the celebrating to be about him.Do a google search on “cult of personality,” and you’ll find a perfect thumbnail description of Donald Trump. He and what he is doing are an affront to our country and Constitution.

It’s wonderful that you found the 1997 July 4 celebration so enjoyable and inspirational. It happens that Bill Clinton was POTUS then. Definitely a flawed president and person, like every one we have had. But in that day, July 4 was still about America and its founding. Every POTUS has recognized that and avoided making it into a personal, self-glorifying spectacle. What Trump wants is unprecedented and more suitable for 1936 Berlin than for anywhere or anytime in America.

Or will it become a day to worship our Glorious Leader?

Sort of like the birthday of the grandfather and father of Kim Jong Un?

I can just see a presidential proclamation with that huge, bold signature at the bottom of the page telling us that : Henceforth And Forever More, The Fourth Day Of July Shall Be Known As Trump Day.

    All Hail The Donald!

Why did he choose July 4th for this event which sounds similar to the annual July 4th PBS broadcast called A Capitol Fourth hosted each year by Gary Sinise and Joe Montegna? That broadcast is strictly non-political but a huge hit for PBS featuring musical performances by big names stars and invited guests. It's a spectacular tribute to the Armed Forces and wounded veterans.

Is Trump trying to muscle in or is he perhaps miffed at never being invited as the main event? It's obvious to me whose thunder he is trying to steal.

I'm sure the city can put it together. They have professionals. People just like to criticize Trump over EVERYTHING.

I want to comment on how amazing Independence Day is in DC. My wife, kids and I were sitting in the "shadow of the Washington Monument" on July 4th, 1997--amazing! So many people! The music from the live orchestra was amazing! The fireworks over the Washington Monument set to live orchestra was amazing! We loved the entire experience!

The 4th of July is supposed to be a celebration of our country, its independence, and the principles it stands for.

It isn't meant to promote a cult of personality and feed anyone's megalomania the way Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Mao, Idi Amin, and Fidel Castro used their national holidays.

No one wants to comment on Trump's plans because he may or may not follow through on whatever he has said.

Just another attempt for Trump to make our nation's most revered holiday all about him. He's jealous of the forced celebrations for Putin, Kim and Xi. It's the opposite of what our founders envisioned. And, it sounds like all of Trump's other actions, no planning. The man's ego has no bounds.
