The survey on which the entire article is based is utter "garbage in, garbage out."

There are 5,000 federal employees, but only 112 responses were received, via the local union. This is a self-selected sample, not at all representative.

First, remember that the "shutdown" was essentially a paid vacation as workers got back pay even though they did not work. (Good work if you can get it!)

The tiny number of respondents were all IRS employees, with an average of 11 years service.
Now 71% say they need 3 months or more to pay back loans or credit debt run up while not getting paid. Why not paid off same day they got their back pay?

After 11 years, these people did not have any emergency fund to fall back on and are living pay day to pay day? Sounds like the union should spend time teaching financial literacy courses to help members.

"Studies" like this really should be ignored rather than presented as news, with not even an attempt at getting a different opinion.

Record doesn't mean a thing, terms of employment with federal government is everyone is expendable and not guaranteed a life time job. The federal employee has no grievances and the state government has no grievances and the BBB has no grievances and the business community has no grievances. Working for the federal government is what it is and its something you live with as an employee and the state, the union, the democrats, the department of labor has no say in the matter and that is that. The people lose incomes, the state loses taxes, the welfare system is put on notice to provide for unemployment, and if the state wants to keep federal jobs then they better make sure they keep the federal government happy and welcome and given lots of room to grow. Stop crowding the bases whit homes for one thing and stop whining about noisy airplanes, and cannons going off, its a welcome sound if you care about peace and good will in your life. The federal government staying in place depends on the citizens and city planners because they can be gone in a week without notice to a place who will appreciate jobs and high paying incomes.
