    Reasons BYU will improve:

    * Jesse Wade
    * Jake Toolson
    * Improved Colby Lee
    * Better player development
    * Senior team-chemistry
    * Motivation

    If you can get last years team back, plus a few new guys, Then it is not last year’s team. Because hopefully you are better as a senior than you were as a Jr.
    Last year we were better than Utah, but let’s hope for a better year this year!

    Laxman,
    I read plenty of hype every day coming from Salt Lake City, East Lansing, and Ann Arbor, that is what being a fan is all about!!!!!!! Have you ever read the articles about Utah Utes in the Salt Lake Tribune?

    Good luck to BYU, Michigan, and Fresno State all my favs!!!!!!!!

    I tend to believe they had the wrong system for many of those players under Rose. He did not preach defense in the slightest, Pope has that as a top priority and knows how to utilize and develop big men, that alone could make this a far better team, but with Toolson (sorely needed 3 point shooting), senior leadership and some returning players off mission that had some good pub, this will be a significantly better team than last year and I believe it could be a NCAA tourney team if the players gel under the new system.

    Garnering Honorable Mention honors on the Associated Press All-America list is a significantly greater achievement than any player on the hill accomplished in 2018-19.

    And let's not forget, he joins a BYU team that dominated Utah 74-59 last season.

    The future is bright for BYU basketball.

    "For those from that great "research" institution...."

    red-jelly-rash:

    For those from that great "academic" institution . . . comprehension can be a wonderful thing.

    GruncleCoog indicated Toolson made an "All-America team", saying, "That by definition is significant." Applying "that definition" of TEAM, JKSM1232 correctly pointed out Toolson was not selected on AP's first, second or third All-American team.

    Honorable Mention is NOT the same as being on an All-American team. Your snark is misplaced.

    For those from that great "research" institution....

    "Utah Valley junior guard Jake Toolson has earned a spot on The Associated Press All-America list, garnering Honorable Mention honors. Toolson becomes just the second player in program history to receive the honor.

    The All-America honor adds to an impressive list of accomplishments from this past season for Toolson, which also includes All-District First Team, WAC Player of the Year and First Team All-WAC honors."

    The returning seniors haven’t really proven they can do much of anything in regards to “special”. I really hope Pope can turn the ship around over the next couple years.

    I’m not buying all the hype. Not this year. Not yet.

    --------------------

    Hmmm...were you reading a different article than the rest of us? Didn't see any hyperbole in the article. Sounds like you just made that up.

    The title of the article certainly describes well the content of the article and there's no hype as to why there could be more roster changes in store. It also mentions a couple of transfers who have to sit out a year and doesn't name a couple of other guys Coach Pope is excited about that could help them in games, maybe this year.

    Woop.....

    woop....

    It's really difficult to contain the hype there.

    oh, the article also mentions the experience of returning guys.

    Wow...that's some serious hype.

    The last crazy outrageously hyped bit is Pope saying he thinks his team wants to win. What kind of crazy hyped up talk is that???

    Yes, for next year Toolson and Wade who transferred from Gonzaga a year ago as well as.

    We did get the two big men transferring from UVU, but they will not be eligible until next year. 6-11 Lowell was WAC Freshmen of the year.

    If you look at Pope's recruiting in the first two months, he brought in the WAC MVP, two big men that are better than anything BYU has had for the last 3 years, save Childs; one of which was WAC Freshman of the year.

    And, oh yeah, convinced the WCC leading scorer and rebounder and all conference, to come back for his senior year.

    With five seniors as well as younger players like Wade, Baxter and Harding getting one more year of experience and to grow in to their bodies, I am excited to see what Pope can do with them.

    "Too bad Dastrup transferred. The new staff could have helped him be a better player. The irony is Dastrup left because Dalton played more than Dastrup for some unexplainable reason which was a mistake by Rose."

    Let me explain the half I understand. Dastrup was a stiff. He was soft and for some odd reason couldn't seem to pick up the offense of move his feet on defense. He was soft, and out of position on defense. His only upside was that he was a big that had a decent stroke from 3. But if the rest of Rose's 4-guard offense were also hunting 3's, you didn't need it.

    The half I don't get is playing Nixon or Worthington.....although you have to play somebody in the middle...

    Same team, same results. If you want to win on the big stage, you have to recruit with the big boys. Gonzaga does it. BYU does not do it. BYU lacks athletes who can guard and score.

    If Coach Pope can get another big that’s better than Dalton Nixon I can see letting Dalton go. Too bad Dastrup transferred. The new staff could have helped him be a better player. The irony is Dastrup left because Dalton played more than Dastrup for some unexplainable reason which was a mistake by Rose. Glad we have a new coaching staff. Go Cougs!

    There is no doubt that Emery and Pope have worked hard to develop a relationship. The crucial difference between Emery and Rose as opposed to Emery and Pope is that Pope owes Emery nothing. Rose brought Emery and his Coach at LP to BYU. Lewis is not on Pope's staff. Many BYU fans questioned the playing time given to Emery last season. If Emery is not playing up to the expectations of the new staff they will have no qualms about giving his playing time to someone else...for instance...someone they are familiar with as far as his production, committment and effort is concerned.

  • Gruncle Ralph Salt Lake City, UT
    June 10, 2019 7:09 p.m.

    I can't remember the last time we've had so many seniors on one team. That will make a difference. So will adding an All-American (Toolson).

    Pope has talked about using analytics to put players in their best positions for success and I think that by itself is a significant improvement over last year. We were deep into the season last year and Rose made the comment that he still didn't have a feel for his players and who worked best together.

    Pope and his staff are putting a lot of time in during the off-season studying film and analyzing data. Here's hoping that work translates into a better scheme that is centered on maximizing the strengths of our returning guys.
