Based on Romney's absolutely consistent voting record, he will make a lot of noise about not approving of SOME of Trump's behaviors, but Romney will never get into the sordid details of what he doesn't like, tolerate or agree with in Trump. Romney will keep us all dangling at..... maybe he will, or maybe he won't support Trump in 2020.
See how that works? He doesn't really have to take any moral or political stand. He can, as always, keep his finger in the air to see which way the wind is blowing, then decide later. As all accomplished Politicians and Gamblers do. Wait and see how the cards are being played, then decide for yourself. Be sure of this, from every indication: Romney wants to be the President.
But.....Romney knows that he cannot criticize Trump vehemently. Just a little bit will do for now. Romney knows that he cannot openly criticize the Republican Party and the majority of Republicans, from choosing down to the man whom we all knew as a liar, philanderer, cheat and failed business man. Romney has to walk a tight rope of decision/indecision, moral surety/moral accommodation of corruption. Summary: Romney will throw in with Trump. For now.

Sounds like the Donald is about to get the boot at the primaries. If he does not get the nomination that would be great for our country and the Constituion.

By the time you turn seventy, as I did last year and Mitt Romney did a few years ago, you realize there are certain things that are precious, and not for sale or even for rent, and one of the greatest of these is character...both yours, and that of the people you support.

Mitt Romney voiced not only his opposition to the current occupant of the White House during the primary campaign, but more so his disgust at his lack of character. While it is pathetic to see Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina...who the current occupant of the White House mocked and scorned...kowtow to him in public, it is refreshing and inspiring for Mott Romney to say, no...not yet...I don't know if I can support him in 2020.

You can question Mitt's positions on any number of issues, but for standing tall and firm and strong, you can't question his character.

If you need evidence that humans kowtow to an alpha male, just read these comments. Not only adoration of Trump, but quick to lash out at anyone who says something as benign as being undecided on supporting Trump.

To say nobody ever rebuts what Romney says is just not true; for instance, Romney's remarks on the Mueller report reflect a lack of balance and consideration for unusual circumstances : Romney has not been subjected to a two year maliciously false harassment from the all sides. But, what also needs to be looked at is what Romney has not said. He has not given a negative critique of any other major political figure; not to the extent he has concerning Trump. From his high 'moral perch' there's hardly any person in this world he could not criticize, but who does he mostly criticize ? And for what purpose ?

    —-

That is funny! There is no “true party.” Taken independently, both parties are crazy. We need both parties to be engaged, and as a citizen, I expect Congress to oversee the administration. Trump has done very little, but drive up our unborn’s debt.

Mitt shows more concern for the nation than the current Administration. Nation before party.

Trump’s personal actions warrant no consideration as a “religious leader.”

Hint..Romney isn't running for president for Utahn's, he's running for his own ego. He was the first governor to enact socialized medicine. That's his greatest accomplishment! Utahn's as well as the general population of the USA will be quite sorry when he finally clears socialized medicine for the entire USA! Socialized medicine takes your medical options out of your indivicual hands and gives it to an unelected board. Your treatment will be designated by several factors, mainly the cost. He's still seeking to be his father who was definately a great and honest man who's values exceeded by far Mitt's. Socialized medicine will almost immediately lead to socialization of many more things. States will lose their soverenty completely and Big Brother will care for us all. This is the current Democrtic goal and he will sit easily into it!

"young people as well as people around the world look at the president of the United States and say, 'Does he exhibit the kind of qualities that we would want to emulate?'"

Romney has expressed the occasional moral principle. He even sometimes claims he supports all human rights, and eschews the dishonest and lawless behavior of the Trump/Putin Cabal in the White House. Alas, Romney ALWAYS eventually votes Party over Morality. No matter the vile and villainous developments revealed each and every day about Trump, he can always count on Romney to support him. Romney was aware, long before the Presidential Election, that Trump has always been a cheat, a deceiver, a liar and an immoral person, yet it didn't cost Trump Romney's eventual support, did it?

I didn’t vote for Romney and I’m a conservative as well as a member of the dominant religion. Romney and many LDS people just don’t like the persona of President Trump. But he has fulfilled many of his campaign promises like no other President. And NO OTHER PRESIDENT has been hounded by the left and the left media like he has. The liberal left is so crazy now with their policies that it will ruin our country. But it’s all about power with them. They will say anything to be elected.

This weekend Trump tweeted his support for the murderous dictator of North Korea and laughed at his opinion of a former Vice President of the United States. Trump also showed no concern that North Korea is once again launching missiles.

Is this kind of leadership that Senator Lee and representatives Bishop and Stewart propose we should support for another presidential term? Their continual backing of this deeply flawed leader will not be forgotten by
    many concerned Utahns.

  • Palmetto Bug Columbia, SC

Romney is neither a liberal nor a democrat. He sides with his party on over 95% of senate votes (more than Mike Lee and many other ‘true’ republicans) and the majority of his positions are pretty standard conservative beliefs. He has supported a large majority of President Trump’s policies but that doesn’t mean he should, or does, support the president.

Romney may be too liberal for some and too conservative for others but that’s good, normal behavior.

After having read the entire article and most of the comments, It was clear to me exactly why I am grateful for being politically neutral and independent. I am also grateful for our first president who so eloquently penned his farewell address wherein he clearly warned where we, as a nation might find ourselves entangled with foreign governments, as-well-as devolving from political neutrality toward policies, platforms, and personalities as a political party might instigate. If you have never availed yourself of the opportunity to read his Farewell Address, I pray you will do so before the media incites you, once again, to continue to do the same thing over and over again while expecting different results which constitutes insanity.

While I did not vote for President Trump, I do have the sovereign duty to respect the office to which he was elected. Should this president or any other man or woman duly chosen by "We the People" commit real treason, I would be likewise obligated to seek his or her impeachment and removal from office. In case you are wondering, I have not voted R or D in over 30 years. If still alive in 2020, I will enjoy my political freedom once again.

I've long been a supporter of Mitt Romney. I still am. I appreciate his approach to policy: research, consult with others, do more research, and then come up with a plan. Good policies cannot be implemented with only catchy slogans designed to rile up the voter base; they require a great deal of study and considering all the possible contributions to the issue. This is where Trump has failed. He wants to stop illegal immigration? Great. Don't build the wall. Most illegals are here either through an expired visa (meaning they were legal as visitors) or forged documents. The wall won't do anything to stop that. He wants to strengthen the American economy? Great. Stop playing with tax cuts and trade wars and focus on balancing the budget. Make it easy for American industry to thrive. Encourage our people to be the best and brightest the world has to offer. These are things that required detailed plans, which is where Donald Trump has failed miserably.

BobUtah - you complain that Romney doesn't represent Utah.... because he lived in the east.... and yet you express support for Trump. How does Trump represent Utah. He was raised going to private boarding schools, away from family, he has been married three times, when the old model grew tiring. He grew up in a wealthy family, and his dad funded his sons businesses. He got his start with Casinos... he has at least twice been with other women other than his spouse, and paid both women to keep quite when he ran for office. He is part of the country club set... where people pay to be away from other people. What part of Trump represents anything closely resembling "Utah" values?

People in Utah voted for Trump because they didn't want to vote for Clinton. They weren't voting for what Trump represents, but more voted against Clinton and what she represented.

In my lifetime President Trump is the first Politician who has actually done what he said he would do if elected. I can go down a long list of the Politically Correct Presidents, Congressman and Senators who have spoken eloquently to us, promising the moon and delivering on none of them. Yeah, Trump's style of communicating is totally different than what we are use to, but so are the wonderful things he has accomplished in just the first 2 years in office. His past is an issue for some, but we all have a past and most of us non-perfect people are sure glad there exist such a thing as forgiveness. Judging others is a job for someone much more worthy of doing so than us mortals. Imagine what President Trump could have already achieved if the Dems and liberal media were just truthful and cooperated once in a while. He has been forced to defend himself, since day one in office against untrue charges, while at the same time managing a world inflamed with problems. This non-Politician, who some feel is such a horrible person is also doing all this for no pay. He donates his entire salary as President to charity. An uncommon guy for sure. Thank You Mr. President!

We needed Donald Trump. I now live in liberal Washington State, but I am looking at the inevitable retirement in Utah, with my wife, to be close to our grandkids. I am also a huge supporter of Trump's presidential politics and policies, and I am very worried of having to live in the very milquetoast Republican State of Utah, where the attitudes seem to be, that it is better to "go along, to get along", than it is to stand up for what is right. It's as if people think that it is better to hide their light under a bushel. I have already lived through that in my home state of Oregon, throughout the 60's &70's, as it turned from workingman's conservatism to flaming liberalism, and then again in the 80's & 90's, as Washington State did the same thing. Why is it so difficult for the people to see that liberals, who are the minions of satan, are turning Utah, along with the rest of the country, into the very thing that the Lord has warned us against, since time immemorial. Don't they see or believe in the consequences that the Lord has proscribed and warned us against? It is time we clean our own houses so that next time, a Donald Trump, would not be necessary as President.

Mr. Romney's remarks about the President are at best distasteful, but I would rate them more in the category of repugnant and self-serving. They definitely convince me he's not worthy of my vote next time around. Yes, the President's not very "presidential", but that's part of the reason why he gets things done so well. Saving our constitutional republic, not being do-nothing presidential, is what's important to me. That's why he will get my vote in 2020. I rate him AAA in performance. People need to wake up and realize we are in the midst of a much needed revolution begun November 8, 2016!

I believe this article misrepresents the facts. Utah voters will vote for Donald Trump because not only are his policies in line with their values as Republicans, but also the Democratic Party has nothing to offer as an alternative except policy positions that are so extreme that few, if any, middle class voters can support them. If there are a few squishy Republicans in this state that cannot definitively state they support Trump for a second term, they will all come around when the election season is in full sway. The question that is posed in this article, if turned around, would find most Democrats not willing to support any one candidate for President at this time either. Given some time, positions will harden and Republicans will align willingly and enthusiastically for Donald Trump's re-election.

Does it matter? Most of them didn't endorse Trump in 2016 and he still won.

This is a big reason Trump is so detested by the pompous Washington-based elites of the Republican Establishment: He has publicly demonstrated their irrelevance. Thanks to Trump Mitt Romney is just a senator from Utah, not a leader of a national party.

@DaveWY - my feelings exactly. I've voted my whole life for GOP candidates until Trump. His behavior and treatment of others and our Constitution are why I will never vote for him. He and his sons and campaign manager sought the help of Russians. Now he seeks to destroy the DOJ and others who investigated him. This man is criminal. That anyone would support him because he appoints conservative judges is unconscionable. Anyone, any other GOP candidate could appoint conservative judges. My dog could appoint conservative judges.

He's done absolutely nothing, zero, zip, nada for the economy. He's made things worse for the auto industry by lifting emissions standards while the Chinese are exploding in the electric car industry and solar panels. He's lifted regulations to pollute our air and water. He's started useless trade wars even against our allies. Given tax breaks to wealthy corporations. He's cozied up to the Russians and Putin walks all over him. He's promoted his own businesses as POTUS and makes at last count nearly $300 million a year off his presidency. He has campaigned every single week since he was elected. This is a short list of why I would never, ever vote Trump.

"Trump is business man... not a politician. He believes in getting things done not kow-towing to the public."

First of all, if you inherit a real estate empire from daddy, it is hard not to be successful, Secondly, lets talk about billion dollar bankruptcies. Thirdly, he's really an entertainer and brand hawker, not a business person.

The myth Trump created about his business acumen is just that. A Myth.

Romney is following what many of his constituents want. He represents pretty well what my extended family and friends want. I finally feel that I have someone approaching Trump the way I want. Support good policies and call out bad actions.

For those complaining about Romney, consider the possibility that Utah Republican voters see things more like he does than you do. Don't just assume he's not following his base.

What Senator Romney continues to forget is that his decisions should represent what the voters who elected him want, not what he thinks personally. If he continues to think that he knows more than the rest of us, then the voters will not re-elect him. He needs to vote how his constituents want him to vote. Same goes for the rest of them.

President Trump has stopped the decline of the U.S. The economy is the best it has been in years, we are getting judges appointed to the courts that actually respect the Constitution, and one can again say "God Bless America" and "Merry Christmas!" All the Democratic candidates for President want open borders, abortion anytime anywhere, and prefer the LGBTQ+ agenda over traditional marriage. I'm voting for President Trump in 2020. These Utah Republicans need to get behind the President!

I have confidence that Chairman Kim will keep his promise to me, & also smiled when he called Swampman Joe Biden a low IQ individual, & worse. Perhaps that’s sending me a signal?" - Trump today.

I'm disturbed that our president is not disturbed. I'm disturbed that he has confidence in a murderous dictator. I'm disturbed that he thinks it's funny for said murderous dictator to demean our former vice-president. We are living a nightmare.

Romney is smart. Romney is wise. Romney is courageous. You don't think Romney knows there are Republicans that would support Trump even if Trump shot up someone on Wall Street? Romney knows he'll take flak for ever speaking out against Trump, even when Trump is wrong. And Trump is wrong a lot.

I think Romney is one of the most courageous and honest politicians in Congress right now.

As a conservative, I would support a different conservative over Trump. Any conservative president could have given us Gorsich and Kavenaugh. But other conservative president's would have been presidential at the same time while in office. I like Trump's policies--we can get that from other conservatives. Where do you think Trump gets his policies? He doesn't come up with that stuff on his own because he doesn't read (you know that, right?). He gets it from others.

    I don't like Trump's persona.

    Good on Romney!

mney: "I think he could substantially improve his game". Well yeah....

Let's face it, Romney will probably fall into line. So sad.

To my mind, the greatest problem is Rep. leaders looking the other way while Trump takes a wrecking ball to everything. I hardly blame Trump at this point. He is a man with many inadequacies, and I don't think he even knows what they are. But he can't/won't change. He's the accidental president, and he's in over his head.

R's in congress know better. This is the really scary thing right now. IMO they are not honoring their oath of office-far from it.

Why can't people look at Trump for what he has done for our country since he has been President? He may have an anoying and childish personality, but he has kept his campaign promises and he has accomplished a lot of good things. I don't understand why so many Utahns (I am from Utah also) refuse to see the good he has done and get all hung up on his personality. Obama did everything so far to the left and wouldn't work at all with the republicans. He scared me badly with how he did not defend our country. Now we have a President who is doing the same in the opposite direction. Why can't Utah acknowledge that?

  • Occidentali Salt Lake City, UT

I hope Senator Romney and other Utah leaders understand that endorsing and supporting President Trump is critical:

To prevent repealing the religious protections of the First Amendment, unrestricted abortion and infanticide, Iran getting nuclear weapons, higher taxes, more regulations, restricting gas, oil and coal exploration, open borders, China stealing our intellectual property, turning over our uranium supply to Russia, turning our back on Israel, socialization of health care, repealing the speech protections and right to assembly protections of the First Amendment. See Thomas Lifson.

These issues have a large impact on “shaping the character of the country.” Personal qualities are important but so too are public policies. Moderation and soft support for the president become moderation a soft support for critical values and goals.

I will never support a politician just because s/he belongs or doesn’t belong to a specific party and I applaud politicians who place country over party.

President Trump has made good and bad policy decisions but those choices are largely made by advisors and would be similar under most republican presidents. The president has failed in moral and ethical leadership which are in many ways more important parts of his job since no one else can fill those voids when he falls short. A large portion of Americans are embarrassed by the president and he’s a joke around the world. If we want the US to lead the world we need a leader who can actually lead the nation.

I wish the president would announce we won’t seek re-election to allow for a real leader to run in his place (I’m not comfortable with the democratic candidates either).

Romney is a political loser in that he cant advance a Republican agenda. For the majority of Utah who voted for him, that goes against their wishes. If he cant support a Republican candidate who was illegally targeted by the leaders of the FBI and CIA to prevent his election and later on to falsely obstruct his administration, then you belong with the Democrats.

He is not a "conservative" and, from the evidence in his life, it's clear that he doesn't believe any of that dogma -- he is a conman who is playing on "conservative" dogma to subvert the will of the people. I have voted for a Republican candidate in every election since I could vote nearly since Nixon (I would like a redo on that one) until the last election. I could not and would still not ever vote for Trump. There are actions he has taken as president I support. I like many of the judicial nominations hehas made. Unlike his predecessor, I know he supports our law enforcement and military.

He acts like a junior high bully. We deserve better than this in our nation's highest office.
