President Donald Trump shares an edited video of Nancy Pelosi. Here's why it matters

President Donald Trump tweeted an edited video of Nancy Pelosi slurring and tripping on her words. What does this say about deepfakes?

It's funny that some people on here don't take issue with the misleading headline that vilifies Trump right off the bat. Did he know it was doctored? You can't tell me that if a video of Trump slurring or stammering wouldn't get democratic retweets. Pelosi has just recently called Trump unstable and asked his family to intervene. She said she would pray for him. However, Trump retweeting a video of Pelosi showing she has some issues, is absolutely disgusting. The double-standard of the left is so obvious it's just the left can't see it. They get called out on their hypocrisy every day but refuse to see a problem with it.

Good grief, Pops. There were Russians everywhere in 2016 - around the Trump campaign, the Republican Party, the NRA - and the intelligence was that Putin wanted Trump to win. This was later substantiated. The FBI would've been negligent NOT to investigate.

Apparently the GOP really doesn't like the idea of a neighborhood watch, since if a neighbor sees a suspicious truck in the area, calls the police, the police might look in a window of a GOP owned house(aka spy on the owner) to determine if there is something going on, or where the driver of the truck may be.

It would appear that the GOP wants the police to sit in the station munching donuts, or something, and really only come out in force when there is a GOP target involved.

There have been many cases where movers have shown up to a house, emptied the contents, and the neighbors just thought the owners/renters were simply moving, when in fact they were witnessing a crime.

The only way to determine crime of not, is to investigate.

The headline references an "edited" video, but let's be very clear. Trump is deliberately promoting fake news, a manufactured lie designed to hide the truth from the American people. Even more horrifying is the commenters here who are perfectly ok with that behavior; unfortunately they represent the values of millions of Americans. A Trump dictatorship is a very real possibility.

"...the accusation may well have been another case of projection..."

"How would any reasonable person expect Trump to respond..."

So Russians swarming everywhere: no suspicion of conspiracy.

FBI investigates Russians swarming everywhere: Conspiracy! Come on.

Besides, you're ignoring what Mueller found with respect to Trump's reaction to the investigation. There was evidence that Trump was worried he'd committed a crime or things would be revealed that would be problematic for him.

And what would a reasonable person expect of a person who knows they are innocent? Well, how about NOT trying to obstruct the investigation? You know - don't risk committing a crime when you haven't committed one? That seems reasonable.

This partisanship baloney is going to be the end us. It's distorting everyone's moral compass...unless you can say you accept behavior like Trump's in other areas of your life.

@EmmanuelGoldstein1984 "The (wannabe) Emperor has no clothes.
But try telling that to the (wannabe) Emperor's followers! They see what they want to see."

Precisely what the fake news media and the liberal crowd are doing... ignoring the obvious... that the Russia collusion claims were a hoax, that other fake claims such as "cover-up" are phony, that Adam Schiff has nothing to back up his false claims against President Trump.

These followers are the wannabe Emperor's followers. And the "empire" is the deep state that thinks they can manipulate and control what the public hear and think.

Thank heavens for AG Barr, the public will soon see the truth about the origins of these claims and how it was nothing short of an attempted coup de tat.

I suggest all readers watch as much CNN as Fox and vice versa. Don't think you have the truth without looking at the opposite sides views. If you don't do this, you are dumbing down on yourself.

    May 26, 2019 8:12 a.m.

@Karen R - the investigation wasn't fake, it was very real. What was fake was the original accusation. In retrospect, the accusation may well have been another case of projection on the part of the Democrats, as they were the ones colluding with foreigners to prevent Trump from becoming president, and then to remove him from office once he was elected.

The charge of obstruction of justice is pretty laughable, given that the accusation of collusion was made up out of thin air. How would any reasonable person expect Trump to respond when he knew full well it was nothing more than an attempt to obstruct his presidency and take him down? He did well enough. In fact, he exercised great restraint, since it was within his authority to have fired the whole lot of them.

The left doesn't like Trump tweeting because the left can't meme.

The left has no sense of humor.

Trump's tweet was effective because the clips were accurate and not slowed down. They were also effective because they were funny.

Everyone knows that Pelosi slurs her speech. The left-leaning media had just been protecting her by suppressing it.

Remember how the left tried to blamed the high school students wearing the MAGA hats?

Remember how the left tried to cover up Anthony Weiner's laptop?

Remember how the left have been lying about Russia bribing Trump for the past couple of years?

Donald Trump is the BEST President "in recent memory".

If he doesn't say so himself enough.

But the only 'best' thing that I can imagine from Trump, is he has moved Nixon off the top of the 'worst' list.

At least Nixon had the decency to resign when it was clear he could not longer function as President, even with a reasonable contingent of Republicans.

Trump has no such decency, nor do the GOP leadership.

The few slightly contrary GOP voices, are not particularly persuasive that they truly find Trump objectionable.

I think it is only fortunate for most Americans that he inherited a going and reasonably strong economy after the 2008/9 financial disaster.

Otherwise, I think we would have another Hoover, and while Hoover was an honorable man in public and private, Trump has no such honor in the least in any sphere of his life.

Tumbleweed... yes, it has been doctored, the original is also available on line... so lets put that rest. The issues isn't the content, its pretty benign honestly. It's that the President of the United States, supposedly the most powerful man in the world, is spending his official channel to sent out sophomoric messages about his "opponents".

What next.... the official White House "I know you are but what am I" channel? It's above bizarre that a 70 something year old man behaves like its his first year in the frat house. Thank heavens the man doesn't drink, one would only wonder what he would spew out then.

You, I, an average person having a laugh at a doctored video... that fine. But this is like the President of Ford posting tweets that about the President of GM on the companies public facing web page or twitter account. You don't see it. It's freaking immature. We have a man whose mental maturity level is that of a deacon running this country. That is whats so bizarre about this.

    @ Pops

"Now that we know [the investigation] to be fake..."

Respectfully, Pops, this sounds like you haven't read the report, particularly Vol. II, the section on obstruction. This is what Mueller reports there:

"The evidence does not establish that the termination of Comey was designed to cover up a conspiracy...But the evidence does indicate that a thorough FBI investigation would uncover facts about the campaign and the President personally that the President could have understood to be crimes or that would give rise to personal and political concerns." (p. 76)

This provides a plausible explanation for the multiple instances of behavior outlined in the section on obstruction. It also provides legitimate justification for the oversight investigations.

Okay... I am going to quote Nancy Pelosi. This article is a "coverup". It is a coverup to try and push back on the fact that she does have some coherency problems that are real. Anyone who has followed her can see that.

Yes, the video has been manipulated. And I noticed that CNN's Anderson Cooper spent a long segment trying to get Facebook to take it down. I find this interesting because Cooper, Lemon and a whole slew of CNN fake news team distort and manipulate the news day to day. They seem to think nothing of it if they do it to Trump, but don't anyone misrepresent Pelosi or Schumer or other socialist politicians.

Look at the Nicholas Sandman of Covington HS reporting. CNN and a host of other fake news providers had no problem showing only the bits and clips that painted their dishonest reporting. Why didn't they show the whole video? Where was Cooper then? As for that matter, where was Herb Scribner of DN then? Did he immediately call out CNN?

Sounds like a double standard to me.

I wonder if those decrying Trump's posting of this video complain as loudly when the Dems post several to his one, just as deepfake, or more, about Trump... If so, why haven't we seen it in news publications...?

Also, we should figure that Trump is not responsible for the creation of the video, but some guy with a Computer having "fun" probably did it for a laugh, and Trump reposted it, in response to the more demeaning fake comments Pelosi has made about him...

Did anyone see anyone crying "Shame!" about Pelosi's and other Dems' deepfakes about Trump in news publications? ----- No? I thought not....

But, why are we wasting time with this, when there is so much of substance that Trump is doing for this nation to bring us back in line with the Constitution, which others have spent decades trying to dismantle, & take us into a One-World-New-World Order; ruled over by an Oligarchy where we may have no Constitutional rights, voice, vote, representation, or freedoms; without guns to defend against any tyrannical, despotic government that may arise.

For his effort & progress in returning us to our Constitution, we can Thank President Donald J. Trump !!!

I'm curious how the left thinks Trump ought to react to things like a completely made-up accusation of collusion with Russia that has consumed the left for 2 years. Now that we know that to be fake, the Speaker of the House, along with sidekicks in Congress and the sycophantic press, have doubled down and accused him of a cover up. Of course we have no idea what's being covered up or how. It's yet another baseless and irresponsible accusation that one might expect to read in a sleazy tabloid, not hear from the Speaker of the House. Seriously, how is a person supposed to react to that kind of garbage? If you don't like the president's policies, speak out against them, vote against them, whatever, but to personally attack the president with accusations of criminal behavior because you don't like him is despicable. Now we're supposed to be surprised that he responds in kind.

The reason Trump was elected is precisely because he responds in kind, which apparently is the only way in which the left can be held accountable. If the press would hold them accountable we wouldn't be here today having this conversation.

China... there have been several reports showing both videos and the meme shared by Trump was absolutely edited. Not sure where you get your information....

And it is absolutely true that the Left has done likewise parodies as well. Not is not in dispute. The difference here is the President himself is forwarding on this mis-information, and then trying to make it sound as though it were true. I don't think the Trump administration had anything to do with the creation of this video. Some hack in his basement created it and it went viral.

The issue is the state of the Presidency. Barr this week said his actions were an attempt to save the Office of the President - not necessarily to support Trump. The best thing Barr could do to bring respect back to the office is to get Trump to begin to act Presidential rather than some high school freshman that has just been introduced to smart phones and Twitter.

Many believe that what they viewed as a black muslim man from Africa as President demeaned the office. Now we had frat boy Donald doing his best to degrade the office of President. Let's hope we can do better in 2020.

The "viral spread" of defamatory misinformation is definitely a threat to our democracy, but it is not completely new. Way before social media technology existed, rumors agitated polarized camps of people. Mobs and riots have been an unpleasant fact throughout history.

Many incredible rumors swept throughout the populations of the combatants during World War 1, such as that the Germans were harvesting corpses from no-mans land for their fat.

More recently, President George W. Bush was fooled by a fake document that claimed to show that Saddam Hussein was pursuing Uranium in Africa. Not just the President, but all of his advisors believed the fake, and America went to war.

Just as our justice system has evolved to provide due process and protection for the accused, trying to prevent mob rule, the news organizations and social media platforms need to perform fact-checking on salacious material, to protect people from being harmed by lies.

Bad news travels fast, but fake news travels faster!

This burgeoning manipulation of reality and fake-news is a serious threat to America's informed democracy that depends on voters to be knowledgeable of the truth and vote in the best interest for themselves and the public interest. In some ways, the distortion of the reporting of facts in this country may constitute a national security threat that will allow those in control of what voters come to believe may be able to control the powers of our government. American could become easily brainwashed to believe in voting for dictators and self-interested powerbrokers that will result in affirming that George Orwell's frightening depiction of a Orwellian state has already arrived.

Will the usual bunch of low informational sycophants defend, ignore or double down on ignorance/propaganda? Based upon one comment already it looks like all the above! Biscuits anyone? You’re welcome.

Actually, there are two videos. The one Trump shared was not slowed down, the other one was.

This is just like the Project Veritas videos the left said were doctored. It got into court, and sure enough the videos were legitimate.

Chalk this up as another Leftist fail - just like the Covington Catholic students, Michael Avanetti, Anthony Weiner's laptop, and the last two years of Russian Collusion.

I find it telling that the moment, the nano second any publication at all, regardless of its readership, legacy, ownership, history, etc...the very second it publishes verifiable facts that are unfavorable to dear leader in any way, the Trumplicans throw the whole kit and caboodle under the bus, decrying a biased press, a liberal conspiracy and a leftist agenda. (it's always one of those)

They're clinging to their narratives regardless of what's plain to see, but the rest of us are getting tired of it.

The content may be perfectly fine. I don't know. I just don't like the tone of the headlines these days.

    Don't hype the news.

Nothing surprises me about the depth Trump will sink to. He is always bemoaning fake news and yet is the leader in fake news and deceit. And on the heels of this we find he has once again done an end-around Congress and usurped its power of the purse by stating because of an “emergency” he needs to invoke presidential authority to sell weapons to Egypt.

The real emergency facing this country is how we can most rapidly get this con artist out of the White House.

That the GOP would would send out a fake video of Pelosi is surprising - how? The Republican Party today is the Whig Party of the 1850s.

    Edited video?

    Edited, doctored, fake...

The only way to send a message to politicians that this type of behavior is unacceptable is to vote them out of office. Trump's doctoring of a Pelosi video is not good. Trump should pay for this at the polls if voters were wise.

Say No to BO -claims: "Condescending headlines are an indication to me NOT to read the story. Journalists are low on my list of advisers in life. Just the facts would be nice."

...and yet hear you are commenting on a story you claim you would not read, calling journalists names (how trumpian) and claiming to want the facts.

Here's an abridged version, Trump passed on a fake meme, who's only purpose was an attempt at degrading Pelosi using lies, which he seems to do regularly.

But we already know that Trump fans don't care about the truth, they are quite satisfied with alternative facts, and attacking anybody who doesn't bend a knee to the Dear Leader.

Funny thing is the Dems don't need to make fake memes to convince their base, that donald is unfit, he's writes his own SNL bits daily.

Did you see him asking his staff if he was a stable genius, it was like a scene of Smithers telling Mr Burns how young he is, too funny.

Condescending headlines are an indication to me NOT to read the story.

"Here's why it matters," is a prime example.

Sadly, there are many more examples, like "Why you're wrong about religion and abortion."

Regularly, you publish stories that tell the reader five things you need to know about...

Journalists are low on my list of advisers in life.

Just the facts would be nice.

Donald and his fan base love fake video's, this is the second time he has shared manipulated videos as real.

Trump continues to share right wing propaganda videos from around the world, and as the world sees him as dishonest and childish, his base cheers such adolescent behavior.
