These two schools have had excellent years, down years, great wins and loses. They are equally matched I. So many ways. To compare them is to compare twins.

    -----

    BCS era:
    Utah 2 vs BYU 0

    CFP era:
    Utah #25 vs BYU #61

    CFP era NFL Draft:
    Utah 21 vs BYU 4

Yes it's like the program's are siamese twins.

    @JohnInSLC

Exactly, the pre bowl rankings for both programs are pretty much equal this century.

2001 Louisville, 2012 Washington, 2013 Memphis, 2015 Utah were teams that would have been ranked if BYU was capable of beating a team with a pulse, regular or postseason.

Which is why compared to MWC Utah/TCU and Boise, BYU's winning percentage is abysmal (~70+% vs ~40%).

    chambermade:

    Fake news.

The reason BYU-P played 10 FINAL ranked teams is because the coogs usually lost most of those games, so bowl-winning teams were usually ranked if they weren’t before, i.e. Memphis.

The reason Utah played only 5 FINAL ranked teams is because the Ute wins usually dropped opponents from the rankings, although really high ranked teams didn’t drop out, i.e. Alabama.

If anything, your stat is a monument to coog futility.

    @ Farmington fan,

As you stated, I also hope BYu is "locked" to the Hawaii Bowl until all Y D1 sports are curtailed.

However, BYu fans don't travel at all, don't even buy anywhere close to their mandated ticket allotment to the Utah game in SLC because they are far too expensive to most Y fans.

So, how many Y fans from the mainland would travel to Hawaii, very expensive indeed, for that bowl game, when a U-Y ticket @ Utah for $125 is not affordable?

Also, BYu has recruited Hawaii HS players primarily for many decades.........the good players there mostly go to the PAC or SEC.

I wish U the best sir!

Nobody should EVER make light of BYu WAC era gold. Heck, they are America's darling, galaxy- wide fanbase, "LEGACY" everything, have the best players, school, ethics, morals, etc........ Plus, Provo, Utah is the funnest, most desirable city in the USA......... We Utes are just haters and so jealous of all things BYu.

As most all BYu everything hope and prays about the 2019 U game on this thread.........there will be no W for the Y. It is a distinct advantage for all good teams, like Utah, to play at LES. WhY.......? Good/better teams will actually concentrate on the road and especially @ BYu because of the talk/prognostications. Good teams quiet the beyond fickle Y fans to no end as they get all over them. The quietest place on earth is @ LES is when BYu is losing. I've been on the sidelines many times at BYU.......very interesting it always is there.

    @ BYu Joe,

I hear ya sir.........you wish for BYu football to beat Utah, hope to, and I admire that "wish."

BYu and Utah football are NOT "equally matched" any longer kind sir. What bugs me, and whY so many recent games have been close, is because Utah is NOT motivated to play the Y anymore. The game isn't important or of interest to anyone Utah now. If Utah could get motivated about OOC BYu........they would cream them every game if it meant anything? And THAT, is the issue my friend. The U-Y game is not important, but hurts Utah's SOS.

I just hope Utah just plays a solid, okay game vs BYu again..........they haven't for a long time, but always get the win.

I am BYU to the core. Five generations of blue.

But until we beat Utah all the comparisons are weak. They have the current scoreboard and that what counts.

And as do all the negativity from both side - it lame.

These two schools have had excellent years, down years, great wins and loses. They are equally matched I. So many ways. To compare them is to compare twins.

Except the Utah twin has the current win. Until we beat them again I have to sadly defer to them.

And this is benefiting the program today??

You coug fans LOVE to avoid talking about where the program is NOW! Why don’t you post the number of NFL drafts or recruiting classes over the last 10-15 years? Or why a decade drought for any top 25 finishes?

Recruits and the rest of the college football world DO NOT care about your 40 year old trophies and awards. They care about what’s going on now, the future and recently. As in, THIS century.

@THEREALND -- "Actually, the Mountain West conference is in. It's either BYU or a AAC opponent vs the Mountain West."

    and

@SoonerUte -- " The bowl game is normally MWC vs AAC. The website says "BYU vs AAC", meaning that ESPN chose BYU for the MWC slot. Is that foreshadowing of BYU's next deal with ESPN? "move back to your conference" "

Generally, the Hawaii Bowl has been C-USA vs MWC; in some years C-USA did not fill their bowl spots. Hawaii Bowl appearances since 2002: C-USA – 12, WAC (before the football exodus) – 10, MWC – 7, AAC – 2, PAC-10/12 – 2, independent – 1 (ND in 2008).

Regarding whom BYU will face in 2019:

    From collegefootballnews.com:

    Hawaii Bowl:
American Athletic Conf vs. BYU or Mountain West Conf
    OR
Mountain West Conf vs. BYU or American Athletic Conf

    From Watchstadium.com:

“Other bowl affiliation changes for 2019:
Hawaii Bowl – Mountain West and Conference USA out; American and BYU in. BYU, if bowl eligible, is guaranteed a spot in the Hawaii Bowl against a team from the American.”

From the official Hawaii Bowl site: "The 2019 SoFi Hawai‘i Bowl will feature teams from the Mountain West, American Athletic Conference or BYU ..."

I can't believe BYU board of directors or the school leadership agreed to this. Besides Sundays, Christmas Eve is one of the most sacred times for Church of Jesus Christ families. How does watching a worldly sporting event fit into that? It won't be watched in our house, and we are huge BYU fans. I can already imagine the many excuses and justifications coming out as to why this football game time is no big deal. If the Cougars can't win six games, they go nowhere. The same place u will be if you don't win 6.

Well, that bowl game is on Christmas Eve. You will never get that as a Christmas wish. It's a MWC opponent vs BYU or an AAC opponent.

    @Cougar forever

"Obviously, our opponent (likely to be a less than impressive team from the MWC or AAC depending on which teams in each are bowl eligible) "

Actually, the Mountain West conference is in. It's either BYU or a AAC opponent vs the Mountain West.

    Some things never change.

Exciting news to know in May the kickoff time of a December bowl game! Especially if BYU becomes bowl eligible, they'll be competing against a Mountain West conference opponent! I marked my calendar.

Unfortunately, @motorbike ("TV-wise can it get much worse than 6 pm MST on Christmas Eve?") is right -- the overall national ratings for this game will be very low.

I know that the Hawaii Bowl generally has been played on Christmas Eve although last year it was played on Dec 22, a Saturday. If this year's game were on Dec 21 it would be a lot more attractive to many of us in terms of attending. Obviously, our opponent (likely to be a less than impressive team from the MWC or AAC depending on which teams in each are bowl eligible) will make a difference in terms of interest.

Oh now that is what big dreams are made of, c'mon Coug's, you gotta want it. Six games is a lot of wins, probably impossible, but it will be very close to see if Provo can reach bowl eligibility.

Well, it certainly doesn't get any better for YOU guys! I'll give you that. You're too WACish and midmajory for any better postseason lineup.

Your opponent will be super midmajory too.

Back in the 70's, when BYU first appeared in a bowl game, there weren't that many bowl games. Today there are so many that all a team needs to do is win six games (.500). So schedule six weak teams and you are in. Then if you can win half (3) of the tougher games, you are that much better off. Personally, I would love to see BYU and Utah matched up in the Rose Bowl (I can dream, can't I?).

"BYU is scheduled to play in the Hawaii Bowl if it is bowl eligible and not selected to a New Year's Six bowl game." -- Jeff Call

In other words, it's Oahu-or-Bust for the indy-WACers. And while no Yner would overtly admit it, they all know that their SOS had already eliminated them from a NY6 bowl.
