Socialism is an ongoing thing anywhere it is placed. During our Great Depression, FDR instituted our first nationwide social programs. Everyone whom participates in a socialistic program seems to believe that they will gain more than it will cost when they participate. In reality in the end, it always costs more! What ever we put into our social programs will cost us at least twice what it would have cost had we taken care of our own needs, and in fact, many people pay a whole lot more than they will ever receive! At the age of eighty four, for instance I have collected two weeks of unemployment insurance. Yes, I know the employers paid it into the government, but what they paid could have been paid to me! Social Security, both myself and my wife continue to pay it. We have to have an outside health insurance, but Uncle Sam limits what we can draw, no matter how much we paid into the program. Both main political parties back the USA's social programs, largely because it gives the government more money to play with, and they use it for their own grandiose programs as welll

I met Antonio a year after he had moved to Utah. Within that year, he had learned english almost perfectly, and ranked one of the top new life insurance agents in the country. The reason I mention these two things is to comment on his amazing work ethic. He is one of the hardest working people I have ever met in my life. Antonio is an outstanding human being and it is tragic to hear what has happened to his family along with the many other Venezuelan people.

while this story is touching. This country can't solve the worlds problems, or take numerous refugees. without lowering our quality of life.
India alone has 1.3 Billion population.

As someone who spent almost 2 years in Venezuela, it makes me sad to see what is happening to the wonderful people there. I pray that things will soon improve for Venezuela.

Pagosa Kid - SALT LAKE CITY, UT, please educate yourself about the word "socialism".

There are many types of socialism. Even early Mormon pioneers practiced many variations of socialism, or the United Order.

Democratic Socialism works throughout the world. Most countries including our own practice some type of Democratic Socialism. Medicare, and Social Security are good examples of "socialized programs".

However, a certain type of socialism is practiced by the GOP. That is Corporate Socialism. That's where the Governement uses it power to put wealth into the hands of Corporations and a very few ultra rich. Look at the tax breaks done by Trump and the GOP. (Those breaks put millions back into Trump's own pockets.) All of this easily proved by Associated Press articles and even printed in this paper, The Deseret News.

Please learn the difference in the definitions of "socialism". . Venezuela is a dictatorship and not practicing any type of valid socialism. But the Fox News people use the word "socialism" to be something bad. It isn't!

All of these facts are easily researchable and available.

To characterize the left's purpose as just education and healthcare is just as disingenuous. The coment in the article that should cause the most pause and reflection is where he stated that the government became more and more controlling every year.

That pattern is clearly evident in today's political environment. I believe politicians from both sides of the isle desire to be a ruling class. Although I would argue that the Democrats are on a faster path.

Can we honestly say, "we the people" anymore? I believe it's getting much harder to honestly do so.

You are clearly distorting democratic goals. Democrats pursuit of healthcare and college education is not even remotely close to Venezuela.

If there is going to be a debate then we should be honest about it.

What an amazing story. It’s a story of bravery and self preservation, but also how a beautiful country can fall into socialism and eventually communism where all the people mourn. Wake up America to those trying to sell Democratic Socialism - look at the examples all around us of those failed states that went this direction.

What a courageous and valiant man. Maduro is a murderous tyrant, refusing to allow life saving aide to reach his people. Ortega gives a glimpse of the horrors of socialism which we all can learn from.
