    What could possibly be controversial about admiring about one of the writer's favorite Russian traditions, and being amazed that it could survive 3/4 of a century of communism?

    Perhaps the Deseret News is ignorant of the fact that Marx labeled religion "the opium of the masses," with the result that people in the Soviet Union who believed in God were considered mentally ill and routinely shipped off to the gulags? Has the history of the twentieth century been so neglected that people (in journalism, no less) simply do not understand the danger of leftist totalitarianism, despite that it killed 100 million people?
