Local officials pan idea, say Utahns wanted Bears Ears, Grand Staircase reduced
We most stop the drilling and save the planet. Hmm!Some folks
believe fossil fuel is a gift from god while others feel it's a tool of the
devil to destroy mankind. We all must make up our minds.
When did Elizabeth Warren become Utah's Congresswoman? I missed that
If only the so-called representatives of Utah would represent the people instead
of special interests, we would not need to get our national monuments restored.
Warren lost whatever chance she had for the Democrat nomination when she had her
DNA analysed and made it public. Identity politics don't work very well
when you are certifiably just a white woman.
@quackquackWarren and Obama "worked hard" and
"understand the everyday person".Well, in my opinion: not
so much. How hard does one work to be a "Community
Organizer"?As racially divisive as Obama was (Harvard professor
and several other examples) I question whether he understands "the everyday
person".I have heard nothing from E. Warren to indicate that her
understanding is any better.
More about the common interest. Drilling is essential to maintaining our
economy, which benefits the country as a whole. We need petroleum for fuel and
for synthetics. That affects almost all Americans. Do People from Maine want to
walk to our National Parks ? How can the parks benefit people who can't get
there ? Yes, drilling companies make profits. They also pay wages and buy
drilling supplies and equipment and provide maintenance. Profits are also spread
out among investors, including private individuals, and entities such as
insurance companies, retirement funds, benefitting the public sector. And the
companies are required to respect and restore the environment. If they do not,
then the Federal Government has been derelict in it's duty.
Our southern border is being invade by people fleeing Socialism. And yet, some
Americans are willing to give up their capitalist standard of living for the
fake promise of Socialism.
Warren, Obama, both came from a middle class backgrounds worked hard and
understand the every day person. W. Bush, Trump were sons of
millionaires, spoon fed and handed everything in life. So when the average
Trump supporter says Trump my kind of guy know prior to Trump becoming President
guys like him would have spit on you. So when it comes to issues
that directly affect you and your family would you not want someone who's
been down the road you have or been spoon fed.
In 1995 congress set apart the Mojave National Preserve, and one thing congress
is responsible for is providing a budget for parks. For the fiscal year 1996
congress allocated one dollar for startup costs. Because the Interior budget had
already been set for that year, look it up if you don’t believe me.Now each president who has invoked executive actions to create, expand, reduce
or eliminate a national designation has no Fiscal Responsibility to fund those
units. That is left to Congress. If she is elected and follows through, how
much will our debt increase? On the other hand, when President Trump
reduced the Bears Ear and Grand Staircase monuments, did congress reduce their
budgets? Or did Interior fight tooth and nail to keep the previous amounts
funded. We have several million acres of federal lands designated for
various reasons, we the tax payers maintain those lands, yes 1/4 of national
parks and monuments charge and entrance fee, 1/4 of which stays in the unit if
lucky. The rest goes to assist parks and monuments who don’t rely on fees
for upkeep and maintenance.Don’t forget why this country was formed.
"The land belongs to all of us". But not without federal strings
attached, which means special interest groups wield the greatest power over
those lands. To borrow a phrase ; "Beware political figures bearing
Moag she's between .06% and 1.5% which means nothing.Glad she
will never be elected President. She'd screw up the west. Her
assertion that families have to pay the equivalent of a days pay to get into a
national park is incredibly naive. Fees are $25.00 to $30.00 to get into a park
currently. Some may go up.Where is she going to cut to get that
money to the national parks so that the parks can be maintained without the
entry fee? The parks are already under funded and can't keep up with
maintenance needs. She just plain has no clue.
I would of liked to see bears ears cut in half, in my opinion, Obama made it to
big, and Trump to small.Warren will never be elected President. She
has to much baggage. "European-Americans had genomes that were
on average 98.6 per cent European, 0.19 per cent African and 0.18 Native
American." 2014 New York Times study. Warren has as much American Indian DNA
as the average European-American. You can't convince me she didn't try
to use it to her advantage. Isn't this what aunt Becky is accused of,
making false statements for gain?
Progressives and liberals are angry at Trump because he is human, but
hasn't been politically correct. They want someone like Warren because she
will tell them what they want to hear while living completely the opposite.
Trump hasn't presented himself as a saint. He just said what he was for
and has by and large stood by it. Warren, Clinton and others will decry all
sorts of things, declare they are for the middle class and then give us higher
taxes, Obamacare, and abortion on demand! They made it through the abortion
mill, so for the rest of us, too bad! Bernie is a millionaire, but wants
everyone else to live on welfare and minimum wage (or a little higher if he is
feeling really generous with other people's money). Of course, AOC is so
absurd to defy description. Youth, ignorant youth! I don't care about
Trump's tweets. Who cares what he tweets? Would you rather have someone
who makes promises that they can't fulfill and know they won't, but
talks nice or someone that sets for policy and then tweets? Trump 2020!
Rita B: No, her DNA testing did not prove what she is claiming. In fact, the
DNA testing unequivocally showed that she is 1/64th or less American Indian!
However, that did not stop her from listing her ethnicity as “American
Indian” instead of “White” on her application to the Texas Bar
Association in 1986 (and on several other occasions), even though she had listed
herself as “white” on still other occasions. Such self-serving
conduct is simply not defensible.
The only thing I agree with her is that our national parks should have no
entrance fees. Same with state parks."Public" lands aren't
very public any more.
Those commenters who are mocking Senator Warren for claiming to be of Native
American descent - you do realize that her DNA testing proved what she is
claiming, right? I am super proud of my Scottish heritage, and I have as much
Scottish blood (or perhaps less) as Senator Warren has Native American blood. If
she takes a special interest in Native American issues because of her family
heritage, I think that it is very inappropriate and tasteless to make fun of
that. Especially since so many of us claim to value family history.
She could care less about flyover Utah. What was that Burt Bacharach
song? Promises, promises. I'm all through with promises. She
looked up what she thought she could sell to Utah and ran with it.
Why is it that the Democrats are always so excited to create national
monuments/parks in states other than their own? Maybe I will take her seriously
after she has agreed to a similar national monument in her own state of
In a Medium.com post, Warren also pledged that "on my first day as
president, I will sign an executive order that says no more drilling — a
total moratorium on all new fossil fuel leases, including for drilling offshore
and on public lands."Makes me wonder if she is getting from one
campaign stop to the next on horseback. I find it highly hypocritical that
liberals preach to us about reducing fossil fuel consumption while they ride
around in black SUVs and fly between campaign stops in jets. Liberals want you to do as they say not as they do. They are the
"smart" ones (sarcasm). I will stick with Trump. He keeps his promises.
The economy is doing well. My taxes went down and I am not one of the 1%. I
don't hate the people who are part of the 1%.
Not a fan. If I ever liked a Democrat it was Tim Kaine, but he’s not
running.Almost any Republican candidate except Trump would be
better. In fact any Democratic candidate except Hillary or Elizabeth Warren
would be better than Trump.Trump is really that bad. Romney was
right about him.
Isn't there more important issues beside Bears Ears? How will
she protect America, people, and babies? How will she make America
even more prosperous than Trump has and will taxes rise or fall?
I can't believe people (including myself) are wasting time commenting about
what Elizabeth Warren thinks about anything. We should be talking about the
weather, or watching the grass grow, or at least something interesting.
She will never be president so she can say whatever she wants
Thank you, Brad Peterson. You have recognized that the real problem is the
defective Antiquities Act itself. It was justified to congress as an
emergency power to protect archaeological sites from looters. So, because a site
could be destroyed before congress could act to protect it, Congress delegated
emergency power to act quickly to the POTUS.The part they forgot was
to require Congress to follow up with a more deliberative solution, which might
involve excavation, restoration, preservation, investigation, or rejection. Not
every trace of every man is worthy of becoming a monument, but certainly many
are. And that is where Congress has responsibility because they need to make
those judgement calls and balance them against funding available to do so.Special deals were carved out for Wyoming and Alaska protecting them
from Presidential excesses, not a bad approach. Better would be to put a time
limit on every Monument. If Congress fails to give a more permanent designation
within some appropriate time frame, it would expire and return to it's
former status, not to be attempted again within 10 years.Forget who
is the candidate flavor of the month. Fix the AA.
Take it one step further Liz. Make Utah one gigantic national park. Why have
all these monuments, parks, blm when you could just do it with one Big Bang?
People don't need to live in the state. It should be only for tourism.
Just another good reason to NOT vote for her.
Utah, and to a lesser extent Nevada and Arizona, have too much of their land
controlled by the federal government. All public lands, except national parks
should be turned over to the state.
"So tired of these people telling us how to manage OUR land!!!"Excuse me, but doesn't the land belong to all the American people? Or
does the person quoted want Utah public lands for Utahns only. Well, we can
play that game in Montana too. Don't like our rules, then stay out of
Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. And a bunch more of the state on top of
that.Come on folks, when western states got admitted into the Union,
these states knew that much of the land in state borders was considered national
property. It belongs to all of us, even in places like Montana where our
national lands are every bit as important as Bear's Ears or whatever other
national park, forest or land the pitch forks are out to protect.Speaking of pitch forks, not a good image for Utahns. Someone should speak to
After reading many of these posts, it appears that E. Warren is not fooling
anyone in the state of Utah.No surprise, really. After
claiming to be of Native American descent, it is hard to believe anything she
says.It appears that Democrats will have to look elsewhere for a
viable presidential candidate.
So very typical: most Utahans want the land just the way it is. But, no,
it's what she wants or what her ignorant advisors told her to say.So long, don't let the Bears Ears hit you in the back on the way out.
Those people who believe Senator Warren cares one wit about Utah's public
lands have been a victim of her propaganda. She is only interested in her
political ambition and career. Please let's not be deceived! As
has been said, she would be the worst thing that could happen to our public
Poor people more important than my favorite color green; let us do the most
important things, and economy and freedom and united communities are essential.
Lets get our pitchforks and remove her from the state. So tired of these
people telling us how to manage OUR land!!!
@marxist:"Fascists" and "Nazis" are indeed completely
socialist. Socialism is defined as "government that controls the means of
production and distribution of wealth". Hitler and Mussolini were just two
different countries' versions of "National Socialism". They
allowed private corporations, but under government control. The profits were
also directed to the Party.Socialism is the "transition state"
between a free market and full communism, exactly as planned by the communist
theorists. These things have well-defined meanings and history. But because
they all failed, Marxists devotees claim "That wasn't true
socialism."....a variation of the "no true Scotsman" fallacy.
Elizabeth Warren has proven herself to be lacking in intellectual honesty and
does not deserve our trust. Elizabeth Warren has proven herself to be
inconsistent in all but her fact-less assertions.
"Elizabeth Warren would be the worst thing that would even (sic) happen to
public lands, I can tell you that right now."Not only to our
public lands but to the rest of the United States. She is a disaster looking
for a place to happen."Adams...said he was 'making fun of
her because she's not honest.'"Yeah, he's got
that right. People claim Pres. Trump is not honest, but many would be willing
to vote for Warren in spite of her proven dishonesty. Talk about hypocirtical!
This woman's ideas are older than Bears Ears. What a disaster.
Why doesn't she just designate 2,000 acres of Manhattan as a national
monument and change how New Yorkers use their land? Urbanite trying
to tell Rural America how to use rural lands is like a Salmon telling a Bear how
to walk on land. Hopefully the bear has none of it.
I’m all for preservation, leaving the oil in the ground, and basically any
eco-Marxist policies out there. But the San Juan guy is right. If you restore
the boundaries and don’t charge admission, the world is going to trample
these beautiful lands.
Please, Sen. Elizabeth:1. Federal public lands are leased, not sold,
to oil and gas and coal miners.2. Rigorous impact studies are
conducted and post-drilling and mining reclamation is required to ensure abuses
of the past aren't repeated.3. There are better ways to prevent
desecration of sacred Native American sites and destruction of fragile
ecosystems than a monument, which attract unregulated tourism that accelerates
the destruction.3. A ban on drilling would undercut national
security and wreak havoc on the economy.4. Every American buys vast
amounts of products manufactured by use of fossil fuels. Those tourists
you'd lure to Utah national parks cannot get there without pouring carbon
pollution in the air. Until consumers drastically cut back on their lifestyle, a
ban on drilling to fight climate change is hollow rhetoric. Sources from
overseas would just fill the niche and our trade deficit would shoot up even
further. 5. Royalties from oil and gas fields in San Juan County
pump millions into county and Navajo Nation coffers. There are virtually no
other sources of good-paying jobs down there. Your proposal targets the poorest
of Utah's poor.
@ RiDal - Enlarge Bears Ears..and also enlarge Mt. Rushmore to include the head
of the 45th president. There is not enough room on Mt. Rushmore let
alone in South Dakota ...What always bothers me about Adams and
Pollock is that though local, they and other state leaders think they and they
alone should dictate what should happen on lands that belong to ALL Americans.
But some of last polls showed that those living in Utah wanted the two monument
boundaries left alone. So they are not even representing the majority.
Oh, wow, now she's not going to win utah's electoral votes if she gets
the nomination. Of course, she wasn't going to win them anyway. What this
may do is help her in the utah primary and with environmentalists. And
there's the entertainment factor: it's fun watching the utah
republicans and dn working themselves into a tizzy over something they really
don't have any control over.
Thanks Lou.Seems everything is wonderful in Colorado thus Utah is the only
thing to comment on. I thought the picture is flattering.
MarxistFascism is a capitalist friendly ideology, and is socialist
in every other sense of the word, totalitarian in nature and heavily state
regulated, a hallmark for socialist's regime's. Only certain people
were allowed to own business's and they were told how to run those
business's.Mussolini was a socialist, research it. Hitler was a
socialist, NAZI is an abreviation for national socialist german workers
party.Key word socialist - sorry you don't get to be a right
wing radical with leftist ideology. You can be on the left and still
use capitalism, China currently has a capitalist economy for example.
Decadent hypocrisy: An American, the greatest consumers in the history of earth,
pretending they are an environmentalist.
Hummmm..... That's weird. This story has never registered
anywhere on the DN PopuList, but has stayed at the top of the page all day.
It's almost as if the DN wants this story to stick around despite not being
very well read. Weird!
Thanks Elizabeth. It's good to hear an opinion from a true Native like
yourself, but our Utah elected officials will take it from here.
One of the truly ignorant politicians.
@Sportsfan123 "socialist dictator's like hitler, musolini, "Nazi Germany and fascist Italy were not socialist. For example
corporations in those two countries survived intact through those episodes,
whereas they generally don't with varieties of socialism. FYI.
Bipartisan compromise:Enlarge Bears Ears..and also enlarge Mt. Rushmore to
include the head of the 45th president.
Biased article much? So much for fair and balanced reporting.
Bashing ones, are you the same Trump voters that believe everything that comes
out of his mouth? Give her some slack, have a tic tac and chill.
That's a plus for her as far as I am concrned. The monuments need to be
I enjoy visiting our National Parks and believe they should be preserved.
However, Senator Warren's bad math is bothering me. "charge families who make the minimum wage more than a day’s pay to
access our parks,"The minimum wage in MA is $12 per hour so
shortly after two hours, a single minimum wage worker can get their entire
family into Zion ($25 per car). Even at Utah's 7.25 per hour you can make
$58 per day. Where is she going that costs that much money? Acadia is also $25
per car. Minute Man national park is free! "No fees should be
charged to enter taxpayer-funded national parks"Making parks
free will destroy them. They are already over-crowded and it's not the
mountain goats causing the damage. I am scared to think of what would happen to
Zion or Arches if they are free. Have you seen them on Memorial Day? Senator Warren, please preserve our most beautiful national lands by
increasing the entrance fee a little. Or you could just do nothing and that
would be great. Here's a compromise, lets make it free for some
semi-randomly section of the population that changes from year to year, like say
4th graders. Oh wait, they already do that. Perfect.
Well this is disappointing. Looks like I won't be voting for Lizzy.
ithinkimsmarterthanyou - Salt Lake City, UT“And I pledge to
start a coal mine there, and ride ATVs over every inch of it long before she
loses any chance at being president.”Cue the banjo...How
highly intellectual. Again. By use of their words and verbiage chosen there
should be absolutely zero complaints regarding being labeled as “low
information” when one must read such absurd comments as above. Especially
considering this poster’s screen name. You’re welcome.
Nice propaganda move by Deseret News. Plaster the ugliest picture of
someone that disagrees with conservative and load the article with socialism, is
a guarantee to get a volatile reaction from the supporters of Saint Trump. Keep the divide going Utah conservatives and trash your sacrid lands
while doing so.
I like Elizabeth Warren and would no doubt vote for her if she secured the
Democratic nomination. But, alas, what we learned from the last election that
even the most qualified candidate in history -- or so said President Barack
Obama -- cannot be elected if it's a woman. That certainly demonstrates,
much to the chagrin of many of us, that misogyny is alive and well in these
Here comes Utah’s public lands as a political football again! Good grief,
Utah’s lands are already greatly protected...but we also need an economic
balance. Please no more politicians using Utah’s lands to get
votes...it’s ridiculous....and exhausting.
How does one believe a person that has spent her life telling a lie about who
she is? The ultimate lie. I don’t believe a word she says.
I've got a better Idea: Just give the land to Utah so we can be like all
the other states east of Colorado.
Marxist"She speaks for me"Of course she does,
she is a communist trying to spread socialist ideology all over the this
country, as if watching history's socialist dictator's like hitler,
musolini, or stalin havn't scared anyone, or even just as recently as
venezuela's recent experiment with socialism. It does not work, and never
will. Karl Marx is rolling over in his grave still waiting for the prolitariat
to rise up against the bourgeois that never happened. This is a
constitutional republic, we have fought many wars including WWII against this
ideology. This country was founded on civilian freedoms, not social commune.
Research the history of the plymouth colony, gov william bradford learned
socialism doesnt work, he switched to capitalism. The colony thrived after that.
Even china has adopted a capitalist economy.Americans will never
vote for someone like her, if so America would cease to exist.
Since previous presidents Clinton and Obama have raped Utah with the poor use of
the antiquities act (under the advise of our own congressman Matheson) Utah has
become a battleground for extremist environmentalists. In point of fact, the
president of the Sierra Club once said that had they been here before the
pioneers, they would have never allowed the pioneers to settle here. As for me,
this is a HUGE reason NOT to vote for Warren!
@ Im Smarter, Your comment is the exact reason to restore both monuments.
That event in December 2017 when Trump came to Utah with every republican leader
in Utah cloying over him for attention was a low point of Utah political
history. It still makes me gag,Cheering a president for taking away
the beauty of your state and the heritage of so many, while trying to squeeze
in for a selfie is not what I expect from wise leadership.
This is exactly why the Antiquities Act needs to be reformed down to 5000 acres
or less. Democratic president: Monuments out WestRepulican
president: Reduced monuments out WestDemocratic president: Enlarged
monuments out WestRepublican president: Reduced monuments out West.Just give Utah the same deal as Wyoming and Alaska. Want a big national
monument? Great, do it through Congress.
Ms. Warren needs to come and study out the facts of the issue (Bear's Ears,
etc.) before making blanket statements about what she obviously has little or no
Slcmom"I have a deep respect for elizabeth warren"I too have a deep respect for sen. Warren, about as deep as .00025 of 1% of
The courts will have overruled the Trump administration long before Warren or
any other Democrat sits in the WH. We're a country of laws, held together
by our constitution, until proven otherwise.
She knows she could never win a state like Utah so she is using Utah as a way to
entice radical leftists in blue states to vote for her over other radical
leftists, all promising to give away that which the government has no
constitutional basis to give. The politics of the left is based on exploitation.
"I have deep respect for Elizabeth Warren, and I believe she would be a
wonderful, ethical, smart, committed, discerning, unifying POTUS."Unifying? What is one thing she has done to appeal to constitutional
conservatives? We thought Obama could be unifying, too, until he turned into an
all-out race baiter. Remember the "Hands up, don't shoot!" lie?
Personally, I'll never forget what Obama and Democrats did to sabotage race
relations in America.
WE lived in Boston for 3 years, during that time, I heard more people talk about
Senator Warren, these were democrats, and they all talked about how she has
never gotten done anything she said she would do before the election... she is
all talk and no action, so if any of you environmentalist , think she is your
answer to everything you hate about Utah, you could not be more wrong,,, I have
seen the real Senator Warren, she will say anything that she thinks you want
@Lambert "This is a show of totally disregard for the rights of Utah
citizens."Of course we Utah citizens all think alike, right?
Well FYI she speaks for me!
@ RiDal "Gifts to every special interest group." As opposed to Republican policy, which confines its (enormous) gifts to the
ultra-rich and to campaign donors.
Thank you senator Warren for giving me another reason to vote against you and
the dooms day fanaticism of the environmentalist movement. @ Baccus
what about the gas oil & uranium? I remember a time when Natural gas was
suggested as a clean alternative to oil and coal by environmentalist until it
became viable. Or the extremely clean nuclear power until they went China
syndrome schizophrenic. Clearly Virginia is ignorant about the land
mismanagement we have been subject to. I am not surprised from a state where the
federal government only owns 9% of the land . Would you like to take a drive
with me between nephi and St george and see the miles of dead junipers and
habitats for wild life destroyed by parasite infestation because we can't
touch it. How about come up with me above strawberry where almost one third of
the forest is standing dead wood starving our wild life because we can't
log to clean out the old deadwood choking off the younger plant life. We have a
natural disaster crisis developing here that will make the Rodeo Chedeski fire
in AZ seem a cake walk all result of of environmentalist policies treating it
like a museum rather than a garden.
@embarrassedUtahn - we already had our moonshot created nuclear power.
Unfortunately, many on the left have decided we don't want the obvious
solution, we would rather have a solution that produces 300x the toxic waste,
despoils huge tracts of land with windmills and solar panels, doesn't
produce energy if it's night or the wind isn't blowing, and makes our
energy bills skyrocket.I assume Senator Warren has stopped using the
products of mining and drilling in her own personal life and in her campaign in
order to show us how wonderful life will be when we no longer have reliable or
inexpensive energy sources - not. Park entrance fees will the be least of our
worries if we take the path she is promoting.
This is a show of totally disregard for the rights of Utah citizens.
Elizabeth should talk to the Native Americans who live and work near the Bears
Ears. This is not what THEY want.
Hear hear, Senator Warren. I'll be sure to attend your rally and show my
support, and invite my friends and families and neighbors to as well.
Two of many reasons she won't get my vote.
Our nation needs an all out, moon shot approach to developing renewable energy!
The Democratic Party is the only option for this. The
Republican Party wants to lead from behind. “We’ll do it when India
and China start doing it“ .......what an Un-American attitude!
"These lands are sacred and must be protected for future
generations."Do you have scientific proof that these lands are
sacred or this your religious belief? Why should your religious
beliefs determine public policy? That is why I oppose making these lands
into a monument, the motivation is religious and as such is not a reason for
guiding public policy.Find a secular reason to protect these lands
and then I will listen.
Leave all the remaining oil and coal in the ground as is possible! We
didn’t leave the Stone Age because we ran out of stones, we found a better
ways to do things!
Another reason the Democratic Party is losing the American people in favor of
ruining the economy. The extreme left and right of both parties are clueless on
how the world, or the economy actually work. The courageous work for real
solutions and hard work in the middle.Talk to me when someone
actually fixes important issues like the federal deficit.
I agree 101% with SLC mom. All points in Warrens favor.
@ Flipphone - , 00April 15, 2019 8:40 a.m." The best way to ruin
a pristine ( Bears ears) isolated area is to make it a National park or
monument,"What about drilling for gas, oil, or uranium?
She has my vote Warren for 2020 !!!
Just another long list of Liberal/Socialist talking points.
The best way to ruin a pristine ( Bears ears) isolated area is to make it a
National park or monument,
They always, always over promise and under deliver!
These lands are sacred and must be protected for future generations.
"There’s no better illustration of how backward our public lands
strategy is than the fact that today, we hand over drilling rights to fossil
fuel companies for practically no money at all — and then turn around and
charge families who make the minimum wage more than a day’s pay to access
our parks," Amen, Senator Warren! I have deep respect for
Elizabeth Warren, and I believe she would be a wonderful, ethical, smart,
committed, discerning, unifying POTUS.
I don't believe one word!
The Democratic race is little more than a competition to see who will promise to
give more free stuff. That includes "gifts" to every special interest
BENM & GSENM Forever !!!
And I pledge to start a coal mine there, and ride ATVs over every inch of it
long before she loses any chance at being president.
