Utefan60 : Americans are doing better than ever! Unemployment is at record lows, even for minorities. Taxes are down and wages are up! Our economy is the envy of the world! Why would any rational American want to go back to food stamps, growing poverty and unemployment?

Nice try at trumpian deflection. Ute's comment was about losing health care.

But if you don't have health care you can afford and then become sick, I guess poverty and food stamps will come along with it will come right along with the illness. And unemployment might, too, if you are unable to work.

Is that what you really want?

A real leader would be working to help the millions of Americans get affordable insurance. That's what real leaders would do.

As the GOP attacks millions of people's abilty to get health care, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid this is just another deflection from their lack of doing what is right for America.

They are not leaders. They are not working for the betterment of America or it's citizens.

The GOP and Pence have supported tax give aways to the ultra rich and corporations at the expense of middle America. Trillions of deficit under Trump/Pence....That's trillions more under their supposed leadership. Now this moon deal?

This is all distraction. Aside from the question, "Why?", it is quite apparent that the news cycle requires change now that Donald Trump wants to eliminate the Affordable Care Act, cut Social Security and Medicare significantly, and make the lives of Americans more miserable. What better way to take our attention off the #1 issue of the day than by setting a goal that the United States achieved fifty years ago.

Since the Mueller investigation concluded with the release of the Barr report, the results of Mueller's report have yet to be made available to the American public. Although AG William Barr has given his assessment, people wonder if it was his place to give. Since Barr is a political appointee and has previously written on the issue of obstruction prior to his appointment, one wonders what was discussed in his interview with Trump regarding his position on Mueller's forthcoming report? Is Barr Trump's Roy Coen?

Certainly the controversy is far from over and dominates the news today. It is easy to think the request to return to the moon will eliminate interest in the Mueller report's findings, North Korea, and the political mess on the border. It doesn't look encouraging

Why spend the money on this? Don't we have more important things to support with tax dollars?

Our divided nation would have a tough time pulling together to go to the moon. Our vice President failed to give a good reason to pull together and go to the moon while criticizing the Govt agency that would get him (us??) there. Not a great way to build a team or a nation.

I am inspired by the recent rocket launches by Space X and the expected launch by Boeing in April. NASA and private industry have made interesting partnerships. Space X may be the one to give us the leadership we need to get to Mars... and it makes you wonder who else will be along for that ride...

First: There is good military justification to have a small space station orbiting the moon to keep an eye on the Chinese/Chinese-military escapades on the back side of the moon.

Second: In addition, the moon would be a good place to develop and test mars lander rocket stages. The moon's escape velocity is about half that of Mars, 2.4 KM/sec vs 5 KM/sec. The difference, as far as booster development utility, being the lack of atmosphere on the moon.

Third: Testing mars-journey space craft could be well tested in the space between earth and the moon. Send Elon Musk's new 7 person crew module, with 2 to 7 crew members on multi-loop elliptical orbits around earth and the moon. Such missions could also be resupply missions for lunar orbiting observation stations.

Typically, most of the previous comments on this article fling off on political tangents to vent against Pres. Trump. In other words, they are off topic.

VP Pence provides no scientific justification for sending human astronauts on a risky mission when robots can do it safer and cheaper. For someone who identifies as pro-life, he is ready to put adult humans at risk for what appears to be nothing more than an exercise in national prestige. Granted, this administration could use some accomplishment we can all be proud of. We already know how to send humans to the moon. We did it with 1960s technology. It's nothing new. The blueprints are still around somewhere in a file cabinet with some packets of Tang. Since then we have sent one-way unmanned ventures much farther with spectacular results. How much more prestigious would it be to send an unmanned mission to the moon with the capability of returning home with samples? That is an advancement.

    Here we are, chasing China.

The reason Trump and Pence are so insistent on this is because China just did it. They landed on the dark side of the moon on January 3rd - the first country on Earth to do so.

Pence wants to spend a ton of money to prove that we can do it too.

I think that is pretty short-sided, not to mention embarrassing.

Years ago, Russia launched Sputnik and it was a sensation. So what did Kennedy do? He set our sights even higher. He challenged us to go to the Moon. He made that happen. Sure, we also launched satellites into orbit, but we accomplished so much more and became the world leaders in space.

Trump has no vision...he has us playing catch-up. China is moving into the place of world leader that the U.S. used to hold.

China created their own TPP when Trump pulled out. China is set to outperform its own Paris climate accord pledge - moving quickly to become self-sustainable using renewable energy resources while making progress on its efforts to reduce greenhouse gasses. China is working with Russia and the EU to create their own Iranian deal and avoid U.S. sanctions after Trump tore up that treaty.

All while Trump tweets insults and nick-names.

Managers deal with facts. Leaders deal with possibilities. Managers create value today. Leaders create value tomorrow. It so refreshing to have real leaders in America again! America is blessed to have the leaders we do, because without them our future would be bleak! Never has America had such a bright future! Thank you Donald Trump and Mike Pence!
