"You don't think suspect NBA starters like former Utes Kyle Kuzma and Delon Wright wouldn't totally embarrass Fredette on both sides of the ball, easily? What would Steph Curry or Donovan Mitchell do vs Fredette?"

See what Jimmer did against Kawhi Leonard in 2011.

BYU vs SDSU, January 2011 (w/ Davies)
    Jimmer 14/24 FG, 5/8 3PT, 10/11 FT, 43 points
    Leonard 8/20 FG, 1/5 3PT, 5/8 FT, 22 points

BYU vs SDSU, February 2011 (w/ Davies)
    Jimmer 8/23 FG, 4/8 3PT, 5/6 FT, 25 points
    Leonard 6/14 FG, 1/3 3PT, 4/5 FT, 17 points

BYU vs SDSU, March 2011 (w/o Davies)
    Jimmer 10/25 FG, 2/7 3PT, 8/11 FT, 30 points
    Leonard 9/16 FG, 2/3 3PT, 0/0 FT, 20 points

Given the support and system to play his game, Jimmer could still be a very effective player in the NBA.
    =====

    Are you kidding?
Jimmer is just another in a long line of hyped college players that were busts in the NBA.
Leonard did what Jimmer could not. Take advantage of the opportunity he was given and became a star player.

"A respectful question to any NBA fan that may know..........has anyone EVER seen James Taft Fredette make a 3-point bucket in the NBA with a hand in his face? "

    Brother rumnuts,

He's scored points and been defended, how close that defense was (generally bench guys) is a matter of pointless subjective debate.

I saw him in a few Sac games in which he came in at junk time and got the game back in range, then they'd pull him and lose. Clearly he's defended.

Part of the magic of Jimmer is that as soon as he crosses mid court you need a guy in his face, that's a benefit because by putting the guy in front of him to get that hand in his face the defense opens up a bit.

BYU won many games with the other guys racking up points because Jimmer was doubled, that's not exactly the same in the NBA, but he's still an interesting threat.

I'm interested to see how he does, and I know you well enough that although you view him with pessimistic outlook, this is somewhat intriguing to you also.

One of us is right, let's call it yet another taco to the many I owe you already!

Many wanton Y fans claim that James Taft Fredette has never been allowed to "play his game by any coach in the NBA." That is true, because he isn't NBA talent at ALL. Sure, he was the total "ball hog" in rural NY during high school and at nobody BYU, even in nothing China pro ball...... but..... but.... this is the NBA. He is now 30 and will ride the pine for 8 games and he'll be let go.

    Stop quoting college stats.

"Given the support and system to play his game, Jimmer could still be a very effective player in the NBA."

Anyone who knows basketball knows this isn't true. The problem with Jimmer's style in the NBA is it would demand complete dominance of the ball and complete focus of the offense to Jimmer. NBA teams aren't willing to do that for him, period. And because of that, he can't be effective on offense with the NBA style, and if he's not effective on offense, what's the point of playing him?

No disrespect to Jimmer. He had a fantastic college career and has a lot of talent, but his game does not fit the NBA. At all.

Jimmer has never been allowed the freedom to play his game by any coach in the NBA.

He’s never averaged over 16 mpg in any NBA season.

It’s very difficult to get in rhythm from distance when you’re only given spotty minutes.

Granted, the China league dosn’t play NBA defense, but Jimmer has proven that he can still light it up from distance when given the opportunity.

btw, no response from you about McGill’s failed professional career?

    @ Northern lights,

Thanks for the James Taft Fredette score vs Utah in 2011......those 47 points at Utah. Well, since you Y fans only appreciate old world WAC football games and what the Jimmy did this century, maybe you should explore what Billy "The Hill" McGill did vs BYU in 1962 @ BYU. He was injured terribly, but he put up 60 points with no 3-point line and no shot clock. If there was a 3-point line it would have been 71 points. Since "you people" only live within late 20th century as it relates to WAC era BYU football, enjoy all that black and white tv coverage re-runs on BYUtv and newspaper photos, go watch Ute Billy McGill. McGill averaged 38 points/game his senior year and a gazillion rebounds. Fredette is zero comparison.

What's wrong with being a "ball hog", if you can score the basketball?

Jimmer is a high volume shooter and scorer; that's no different than any other leading scorer in the league, like James Harden.

Given the freedom and support of his team, he can light up the scoreboard, which, after-all, is the whole point of the game, to out score your opponent.

There are only a handful of players in the NBA, like Steve Nash, that can match Jimmer's 3-point shooting.

I'm very excited to see what he can do with the Suns.

"James Taft Fredette rarely played against a starting player during his brief/dubious stints in the NBA"

LOL at how you just make things up.

You don't have one scintilla of proof to back up your dubious claim that Jimmer rarely played against starting players.

It is interesting how obsessed you and other BYU haters are with a former BYU player that you claim is totally irrelevant.

That 1/11/2011, 104-79 beat down in the Huntsman Center and Jimmer's casual half-court buzzer beater to end the first half still haunts Utah fans, which explains their constant Jimmer-hating vitriol.

    Just a reminder...

Jimmer Fredette vs Utah January 11th, 2011:
    35 mins, 16/28 (57.1%), 10/19 FG (52.6%), 6/9 3PT (66.7%), 9/9 FT (100%),
    4 REB, 6 AST, 2 STL, 2 T0, 47 points.

Could have easily been 50+ points, but Dave Rose mercifully pulled Jimmer from the game with 5 minutes remaining.

James Taft Fredette's "credo" has always been being a "ball hog." He was that in high school, at BYU and in China. The NBA is a different story. EVERY starter in the NBA is far more talented than Fredette........and all the bench players too! Why has NO NBA TEAM given him the "ball hog" role? Everyone knows whY. He isn't NBA quality talent in every respect other than his free-throw shooting %.

Would be nice to hear about him every once in a while with all his success."

It's all about selling the news, not about who is the better player. I think all would agree that Lillard has had a much better pro career. But the last 4 articles on Lillard in the DN going back more than a year had a grand total of 4 comments. 1 per articles. This story on Jimmer has over 75 comments and he hasn't yet played a minute. In Utah comparatively as a news story Lillard doesn't move the needle. Jimmer blows it up.

So what you are saying is that Superlative means supreme. So when I looked it up there were a few definitions, one being “at a high level.” And if you ask me Utah has played at a high level much more than byu ever has at basketball. Also, didn’t the Utes win a national championship in basketball? But that was so long ago nobody really talks about it unlike byu’s Undeserving NC in football which was definitely not superlative.

You obviously don't understand what the term "superlative" means.

that is "surpassing all others : SUPREME"

Sweet 16, Elite 8, Final Four, runner up, champion of the 2nd rate tournament of the day

    do not equate to: SUPREME

    Consensus National Champion = SUPREME
    Heisman Trophy Winner = SUPREME
Consensus National Player of the Year = SUPREME

It may not apply to all-time, which is another discussion, impossible to prove, but it does apply to individual seasons.

Utah's superlatives pale in comparison to BYU's superlatives.

    *************

I beg to differ. Utah's been to 16 Sweet Sixteen's and BYU's been to, ahem, 7. Utah's been to 4 Final Fours and BYU's been to, ahem, NONE. Utah's all time record in the NCAA tourney is 38-32 and BYU's all time record is 15-32. Both the Utes and the Cougars have been in the tourney 29 times so in the same number of tourney appearances the Utes have 23 more victories. Finally, of course, there's that dubious NATIONAL record the Cougars hold for the most appearances in the tourney without EVER reaching a Final Four. Actually BYU's superlatives pale in comparison to Utah's superlatives. It's always a GREAT day to be a Ute!!!

What does every basketball player who's ever played for Utah have in common?

NONE of them has ever, or will ever, be Consensus National Player of the Year.

Jimmer would have had a very good chance of playing in the Final Four if BYU hadn't lost their 2nd best player just before post season play began. Even so, Jimmer almost single-handedly carried BYU to within a missed FT in regulation of advancing to the Elite Eight.

No Utah player has ever come close to matching the electric atmosphere Jimmer produced on the court - there's a reason Jimmermania and Jimmer range have become part of the basketball lexicon.

Here's a question for all you BYU basketball fans out there. What do Jimmer Fredette, Danny Ainge, Fred Roberts, Andy Toolson, Greg Kite, Dick Nemelka, Jeff Congdon, Craig Raymond, and any other former Cougar basketball player you can think of all have in common? Answer: none of them have ever or will ever play in a Final Four.

Jimmer has always been a volume shooter; expecting him to come off the bench and immediately begin to drain 3's every time he steps onto the court is unrealistic.

But, give him an offense that incorporates his game into the scheme, and he's proven that he can put up huge numbers.

Jimmer range and Jimmermania are still possible for Jimmer in the NBA.

should be interesting, because phoenix already has a very good shooter who needs the ball in devin booker.

always thought that fredette should have embraced a kyle korver type role in the nba, where he is basically a spot up shooter. in the modern nba, ability to hit the 3 consistently is valued. fredette's woe has always been centered around his lack of athleticism/speed. the nba game is so much faster than the college game. korver has made it because he is a great shooter and because he is relentless in his off ball movement.

    wish him well.

The reason Jimmer hasn’t made it in the NBA has nothing to do with his lack of defensive skills. And all to do with he’s not a role player. For him to do his thing the offense has to run through him. And no NBA team has been willing to make Jimmer “the man” and build a team around him. Will be interesting to see if Phoenix makes him “the man”.

    Why do you care?

What difference does it make to Utah fans if Jimmer plays in the NBA?

NOBODY is forcing U to watch or read articles about Jimmer.

Despite your denials, Jimmer has always generated considerable angst on the hill.

Utah fans still haven't gotten over the beat down Jimmer almost single-handedly laid on the Utes in his last visit to the Huntsman Center.

Jimmer's half-court, 1st half buzzer beater still haunts Ute fans.

Some Ute fans make comments to get under the skin of BYU fans. Some BYU fans do the same to get a rise out of Ute fans. Go look at the comment section of Utah oriented articles. The 'obsession' is very mutual.

It's a rivalry, get over it.

Jimmer was a great college basketball player. And has done very well in China.

Glad he is getting another shot at the NBA. It seems like he just needs a situation that favors his game. Hope for him, Phoenix is that spot.

I am a Utah fan but tend to really cheer on kids that have played at local programs, once they leave. Hope it works out for the Jimmer. Seems like a really good guy that truly loves the sport.

He is certainly a LEGEND in the eyes of BYU fans. He was the NCAA Player-of-the-Year after all. Which is frankly impressive.

And Bogus is reportedly coming back to the Warriors. Good for him too. I think I went to every home game his last yr. at Utah. Time for him to get another ring.

I continue to find it laughable that people still say Jimmer can't make it in the NBA because he "doesn't play defense." Now, granted, I don't watch really any NBA games because, well, I just don't care about the NBA. But every time I walk into a restaurant and an NBA game is on, or catch a bit of one while flipping through the channels, one thing always astounds me: the incredible lack of defense. So, how is defense, or lack there of, a factor in him not getting an NBA job?

Sometimes life is just sad.... Jimmer can shoot the lights out with the basketball, it's too bad that the game has two sides to be played, (1) offense & (2) defense. Jimmer learned one side, but was never taught the second side (defense) and that is the reason he hasn't made it in the NBA, and his second time at this with the Suns, will prove to be the same thing. History repeats itself.

I think this is very good news. Jimmer never really got on a team that really wanted him. Phoenix REALLY needs a scoring guard to compliment their point guard, and Jimmer can do that. It will be interesting how he does there. I also believe that Jimmer has been the object of reverse discrimination in the NBA by players like Carmelo Anthony, but hopefully, that is a thing of the past.

Glad to hear it! Jimmer may or may not “make it” in the big show this time around, but it’s great to hear that he’s getting another shot. He’s a good guy who has proven he can score and has had some time with the Sharks to work on his defensive skills - not that defense seems to be a major part of CBA games!
