The Utes have never had an NFL or Super Bowl MVP QB.

“Corbin Kaufusi DID play when Utah was scoring at will in the 4th quarter”

Corbin did continue playing after reinjuring his knee and ankle, which required 2 of 3 season ending surgeries he had after the game, but he was far less effective.

Without Corbin constantly harrassing Shelley, he was finally able to complete a few long passes.

    @Skywalker,

BYU is a fossil these days. Nobody mentions them. Utah is talked about every darn year after we were able to recruit good talent and show up in the CFP polls most times. I thunk the last national player award that a BYU player won was Luke Staley in 2002. You can relish in the awards, analog era BYU players won last century. Army won 3 national titles and 3 Heismans as well last century. The only thing is......ARMY is a way better football team than BYU as of today. Good luck, saint.

Here, here! I'm right there with you, buddy. Glad to see a sensible comment on this board.

I'll weigh in on BYU vs Utah, 2019. Utah has a very talented team, and with the way their last 2 went, they'll be hungry. I still like BYU's chances. We lost in the 4th quarter of the last regular season game in 2018 because we don't have Utah's depth. This coaching staff is working to change that, but it will be years before we have Utah's current depth, and I don't know when or if we'll be able to actually close the gap. But this is the first game of the season, when all our starters are healthy. As are theirs. As I recall, though, our starters did a pretty decent job last year against their starters, until they left with injury and the depth took over in the last quarter. With a young o line that did okay against the stout front 7 of Utah last season, I expect the off-season to benefit BYU more than Utah in the trenches. Also, Wilson, as "the guy," will have more snaps in practice and more time dialing into the receivers than before, which leads to better throws and fewer mistakes for the Utes to capitalize on. Maybe I'm just an optimist, but I like our chances in Provo.

"How did BYU look against Michigan in 2015, big hitter? We thumped them both years in fact."

Utah played a very weak Michigan team on the road in 2014.

In 2015, Utah played, at home, a Michigan team that was breaking in a brand new coaching staff, first game of the season.

In 2015, BYU played a MUCH better Michigan team on the road that was in the midst of holding 5 straight opponents to a total of 14 points.

btw, has is it that beating Michigan by 7 points is "thumping" them, but Utah losing to Northwestern by 11 points was considered a close game by Utah fans?

Hill dropped BYU in 2014-15 because he didn’t think Utah could handle playing both BYU and Michigan OOC.

Michigan 2014 on turned out to be a patsy, 5-7, which led to Brady Hoke being canned and Utah catching a 2nd break catching Jim Harbaugh in his first game as unranked Michigan’s head coach.

Fortunate timing for Utah that the Utes didn’t play later Michigan later in the season when the Wolverines were a Top 15 team.

Wow, the Utes are out in force on this article.

Maybe because there is no news on Utah football. The only article in the DN about Utah football is about rising prices for tickets.

Or maybe it's because U still love your rivalry with the Coogs. I'm from Colorado and frequently read news on the Buffs. I can count on one hand the number of Utah posters on Buffs articles. No rivalry there.

The reality is that Conover as a college QB is unknown. Trying to compare him to Tanner Mangum or Steve Young is unfair. He's not Mangum or Young, he's Conover. He has a fantastic HS resume and I'm optimistic his success will translate well to Lavell Edward Stadium.

And while I acknowledge the Utes dominance over the past decade, there is no denying how competitive most of the games have been. One player like Wilson or Conover is all it takes to turn a 3 point loss into a 3 point win, and I hope to see a new decade of winning close games by the Coogs.

Wilson seems like a solid QB, and I wish Utah would’ve snagged him. If he gets hurt, good luck. With Shelley, we’ve got much needed experience if Huntley goes down. Not to mention, an amazing RB in Moss.

Ummm, you do know both Huntley and Moss will be seniors next season, right? So your assumption that Huntley transfers is false and made up. Much like Conover being “the real deal”. Before he’s even suited up. Utah’s transfer in Cameron Rising is a very highly rated 4 star QB. But I’ll wait until he takes the field to see what he can do before claiming anything great about him.

You guys REALLY need to wait until Wilson plays a full season before crowning him the next Jake Heaps, errrr Tanner Mangum? Oh wait! His last game against the 107th team in the nation isn’t a good measuring stick. But good stats nonetheless.

Offer from Alabama? Is Conover crazy? Play for Saban and National Championships instead of the Potato Bowl. Plus he will be running for his life and will likely get injured. Tim Tebow said it best about Taysom Hill, "he probably would have done some great things in college if he played for a better school." Conover should finish his mission then accept Alabama's offer. Learn from the best coach ever, win some National championships then enter the NFL. You think playing football at BYU is special?
Go to an Alabama game, there is nothing more special than that experience. Otherwise he'll get the soup knocked out of him and never play in the NFL. Someone please talk some since into Conover.

Jacob Conover is the prototype BYU recruit.. He is a clean living, hard working, great student with great values and great skills. The best part is how he has his priorities in order. Certainly there are those who focus every thing on their football careers, but when their playing days are over, they are lost souls with empty lives, and often times broke and unable to support themselves. Moreover, to be an NFL player is not the highest thing a person should aspire to. Great football players are first great people. Just look at Taysom Hill. He served a mission, was a great, though oft injured college QB who stayed true to his commitment to BYU, has a wife and children, and earned his degree (including an internship in finance) and is now earning big bucks playing in the NFL. But when his playing days are over, he is well situated for a successful career after football. College football is harder than high school football, but a mission seems to help players with their maturity and outlook on life.

P.S.: I like the fact that he didn't make a media spectacle out of where he was going to play, but instead made his intentions known early and stayed with it.

    “BYU frequently signs 4-star QBs”

What ever happened to those “4-star” QBs?
And please define “frequently”. Mangum and Heaps were 4 and 5 stars weren’t they? How’d they work out?

Curious as to why Conover was recently downgraded to 3 stars on Rivals.

So, BYU becoming a quarterback factory again?

    Not likely!

I guess, seeing the comments, you haven't watched him play.
Elder Conover, since he is an ordained missionary, is well gifted at QB. Great in the pocket and roll out. Great at run. All purpose QB.
Excellent leader at the position, else wise he would not have 3 consecutive state Championships.
Gunner Romney and Jacob were a great pair. A lot of TDs together. Gunner's brother is also a QB, great QB, I believe redshirted last year. Could be a force to recon with at starting position this season.

Recruited during Sophomore by D1 colleges, Junior year heavily recruited by several D1.
Before start of Senior, he announced he is serving the Lord as a Full-time missionary. Announced and gave verbal to BYU. I believe recruiting pretty much stopped after announcing he was serving a mission for 2 years. Otherwise, the offers would be through the stadium.

I am NOT nor will I NEVER BE a big fan, little fan, or minor fan of BYU. I am a Fan of Chandler High School FOOTBALL and their athletes. I watch, at times, BYU football to see them play.

I will always be a FSU fan, as I am a true FLORIDA NATIVE, real Florida, not Lower State New York, and ASU where I graduated

Interestingly, JG/MH/JB all played @ my HS & were all state champions in the highest classification.

    Go Toros!

    Go Utes!
