We need a wall on our southern border. The article associated with these comments helps to define why. As Americans we welcome immigrants from the world over but most Americans want immigrants to comp;y with our immigration laws. President Trump is seeking one of the best solutions to the problem. After reading this column I still support the wall. I also agree with the article that the wall will be expensive. Trump needn't cave in His victories are coming in smaller pieces than he wanted.

Trump shutdown the government which effected hundreds of thousands workers to arrive at a deal that gives him less than what was offered before the shutdown. Trump lost (and so did we as a Nation).
Next time during his "executive time" he ought to quit listening to or watching the likes of Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity and the like. We all would be better off.

"The victorious strategist only seeks battle after the victory has been won, whereas he who is destined to defeat first fights and afterwards looks for victory."

    - Sun Tzu

Pelosi won this battle during the December 11, 2018 Oval Office meeting, with Trump, Schumer, and...ah...some white-haired guy whose name escapes me. Even -before- she became Speaker of the House. Trump was so entranced by the prospect of a fight with Democrats that he went on record -- televised no less -- to "own" the federal shutdown, without any idea of -what- he was hoping to win, and -how- he was hoping to win it. Immediately as Trump said that, Schumer looks across at Pelosi, and then looks down, took less than a second. They both knew at that moment that they won this battle, and the rest would be just going through some motions to get there.

The donald simply isnt a good president. Far from it. But what should really concern true patriotic* Americans is how 33% of our fellow countrymen can so easily be fooled by such a person? You can see them on this page with their made up 'facts' and obvious distain for reality. Impotently screaming for a useless wall. So whipped into a frenzy by the lies this administration seems to revel in. Always afraid of 'them'. Its sad really.

I can't help but wonder if trump's defenders ever make any effort at all to try to learn the actual truth before trying to support things he's doing ? Or is it simply easier to simply pass along trumpian lies?

I wish he would have just claimed victory to begin with. Tweet out that the wall has been fully funded and construction is underway. The minority of Americans who blindly follow him would have believed it, like everything else he says, and the Country would have easily moved past this 'political speedbump'.

Biscuit said, “This is a victory for President Trump. dems said they wouldn't give him anything, but they did.”

Let me correct what you’ve said. The bill that Trump said he would sign in December before right wing media made him change his mind, the bill the Senate approved by unanimous consent and which the Democrats in the House and many of the Republicans said they would vote for, had $1.6B for a Botder Wall. But now after a 5 week shutdown putting millions of lives in peril and losing $13B in the American economy, Trump will sign a bill with only $1.375B for a ‘barrier.’

    Trump lost.

While the left is focused on preventing the President from building the wall, he's appointing bus loads of federal judges who respect the language of the US Constitution. The joke's on you! His legacy of textualist judges may make him one of the most effective defenders of the US Constitution in US history.

"so the actual debt Obama contributed is probably way over $10 trillion"

Cite the Obama policies that 'contributed' to the debt increase that was 'way over $10 Trillion'.

Cite how much each specific policy contributed.

Facts are important to support your claims, so take your time.

    @thid

Spending originates in Congress. 6 of the 8 years of Obama presidency was a solid republican house and the last two he had a republican majority in Congress.

So it is misleading to say he increased the deficit but if you are going that way why does trump have deficits then?

  • ECR Burke, VA

Thid Barker said, “Joe hill: 22 trillion- of which Obama added 10 trillion! Not to worry before President Trump is done the national debt will be on the way down.“

Thanks for that chuckle Thid. Here’s a fact to consider. Over the past 38 years only two presidents have lowered the national deficit each year of their administration - Clinton and Obama. Each one of the so called fiscal conservatives increased the deficit almost every year of thier time in office. One of Trump’s many campaign promises was to eliminate the entire national debt within 5 years. Instead he has taken the deficit from around $400B in Obama’s last year to now over $1.0T. And his tax cut will only make it worse. The national debt increased significantly under Obama because he started with a $1.4T deficit from GW Bush who took Bill Clinton’’s surplus budget and passed a $5.0T tax cut. You can look it up.

  • Thid Barker Victor, ID
    Feb. 13, 2019 4:49 p.m.

JoeHill: Fact: On January 20, 2009, when Obama was sworn in, the debt was $10.626 trillion. On January 20, 2017, when he left, it was $19.947 trillion. So he actually did add over $9.3 trillion. I said $10 trillion because Obamacare red ink was still coming in (and still is by the way) so the actual debt Obama contributed is probably way over $10 trillion! $2 trillion is less than $9.3 trillion isn't it? Where was your outrage then?

  • one old man MSC, UT

"Joe hill: 22 trillion- of which Obama added 10 trillion! Not to worry before President Trump is done the national debt will be on the way down."

    One more trumpian lie.

First "Obama's" 10 trillion was really George W. and Cheney's debt due to three wars on the national credit card. Obama's policies actually slowed the growth of the debt -- but couldn't stop what was already rolling. If it had not been for Obama, the debt would be much larger now than it is.

Second, trump and the GOP with their tax cuts have already added 2 trillion in two years -- much, much more than ANY administration going clear back to WW II.

And third, if you believe that trump's policies ( fantasies would be a better word ) will eventually reduce the debt, I'm sure trump has several more lies he would love to tell you.

Thid, you really need a real news source. The fact is that Trump has not built even 1 foot of new wall. Not 1 foot. What has happened is that some portions of the old wall has been replaced and repaired. That's not a "Fake News" or liberal media position. It's the cold, hard truth. That money and authorization was approved by the Obama administration. Trump has had the military roll out some razor wire, That's the entire extent of his wall building.

We can't. Most everyone knows that. Former business partners, employees and contractors know this. Our allies and other World leaders know this. Congress knows this, even the leaders of the GOP Senate and House know this. Our enemies know this and revel in it. Putin knows Americans don't trust Trump, that's why Putin worked to get him elected. I think even most of Trump's dwindling base know this, they're just too dug in to say otherwise.
