Utah would be ridiculous to rid themselves of Coach K. He is a great coach, and yes, it has taken longer than expected, but the trajectory for the program is on the up and up. This class of freshmen are very skilled, and the next class that has signed is also filled with top level talent. Utah will be a force very soon. Let's not forget that Utah employed the worst basketball coach to ever exist in college basketball. Jim Boylen destroyed the basketball program, he should not be allowed anywhere near the game. Utah is still recovering from the mistakes Boylen made. Coach K is developing players, and you can see the marked improvement. Utah is lucky to have Coach K, he easily should get two more years to prove that the foundation that he has laid will begin to benefit the Utes in the long run.

Brad I’m not sure while your sole purpose is to bash the Utes as much as you can in every article you write, and quite often you do it with false information. Here’s a few Facts.
This would be Utah’s 3rd season missing the tournament not 4th.

They Were in position to make the tourney both seasons they missed, they could of easily been in with 1 more win, or a less eastern biased selection committee.

Only Oregon and Arizona have more wins in conference and overall in the last 6 years, 5 years, 4 years, or even 3 years.

    Final Rankings
    #15 2014-2015
    #20 2015-2016
#36 2017-2018 (No NCAA tourney but this teams could of easily won a game in the tourney)

Has finished tied or higher than the conference projected finish every year.

Let’s not forget either Larry ranks near the bottom at recruiting in the conference but develops talent. Seems to me he has Utah in a good place. Firing him would be a mistake he will get his team to the tourney next season.

PhiloBeddoe takes a shot at Coach K. "Doesn't he lead the league in cancelled games?" I'd like Phil to answer the following five questions regarding Coach K's cancellation of the BYU game. Did it work, meaning do the games since then include better sportsmanship? What did Nick Emery say to Brandon Taylor? What did Nick Emery say to Coach K? What did Coach Rose do about it? And what do you think would have happened if any Ute player had seen Nick's punch live?

I am amazed at the grief Krystkowiak still takes from BYU fans, and the local media. I'm so grateful we have the wise Brad Rock. He is so brave. Actually, I think he is patronizing, cynical, and negative, especially when it comes to Coach K.

Rose is 4-3 versus 80k, 2 in a row, including another dominating 74-59 win over our little brother, making one of 0’s in Rose’s 92-0 record when holding teams to 59 or fewer points.

Rose has won 20+ games in 13 straight seasons, and counting.

80k won’t get to 20+ wins in 2019 for the 3rd time in 8 seasons.

    -------------------

Are we supposed to be impressed? Rose has 3 NCAA R64 wins in 14 years, 80K has 3 in 8 years.

Which isn't great so he has another year to make the NCAA tournament and 2 years to make at-least another Sweet 16 run, otherwise he will be on the hot seat.

I have no problem with BYU extending Rose's contract, he's doing a great job I hope he keeps winning 20+ games in a ONE bid league.

Now is not the time to assess coach K. Few fans seem to understand that this year is a transition for the program. It looks like the coach assessed the trajectory and found it not to his liking, so he made a dramatic shift in recruiting. This year's team is full of potential and the real assessment will be whether this change in direction builds some positive energy over the next couple of years. I think everyone needs to step back and watch the process, then make a decision on how well it's worked.

Yes it is time for him to go. He doesn't deserve to be the 8th highest paid BB coach in the country with his record of on court and off court disasters. The U has to figure out how to pay him off as long as it comes from their big time boosters ($$$).

Don't blame the coach for the insane salary. That's on the administration.
But he can be blamed for being a sub par coach with sub par results.
He knows how to get a good contract but not know how to run a successful program, especially with the talent ha has had.
With the pac slipping off into irrelevance salaries will soon change with the next contract, if he lasts that long.
It's sad to lose 15 of 18 to your big brother.

Hey spoon, you kind of don’t get it. You stated: “Heck of a mess - you realize winning coaches make money for the university right? If I am a CEO and produce millions of dollars of profit they would be stupid to cap my pay at 200k”.

Here’s the part you don’t get. If all Universities capped the coaches’ salaries around 200k a year they will still win games, the fans will still come out to see the wins. If the ticket prices were lower even more fans would come out.

If the coaches couldn’t make millions I think they would still coach for hundreds of thousands because if they don’t do what they love, what will they do – what you and I do?

BYU fan here. I can't believe the Pac 12 sends only one team to the dance. Has that ever happened before? The WCC will send only one, barring a major upset in Las Vegas. But the P12? I doubt it.

As far as Coach K's salary, don't get mad at him. Reminds me of David Gardner, president of the Univ of California in the '80's. At the time, his salary was $200,000 considered very high. When challenged about it by the press, Gardner simply said "the Board of Regents offered that amount, and I accepted." The powers that be at Univ of Utah are the ones who take the temperature of the market for D1 basketball coaches and they decide what they think the coach is worth. Don't blame Larry K. The salary is not based on how many games the team wins under a given coach; rather on what the school thinks they will. The school is quite often wrong, but that can be owing to many factors other than the coach's ability.

This is a great, informative editorial. The criticism is not in the job Coach K has done but the contract he was extended. Can't blame a man for taking what was offered. I'm happy with job Coach K has not only done on the court but off it. He runs a clean, respected program.

After a brief flash of success, which ended with a humiliating loss to Gonzaga, Utah fell back into mediocrity. #110 Utah is ranked lower than #43 Utah State, #84 BYU, and #108 UVU.

Utah's current 2nd place standing in the PAC 12 is more of an indictment on how pathetically bad the PAC 12 is, than a kudo to what coach k has done to rebuild the program.

Utah, BYU and all other Utah university results are about what you would expect in today's BB landscape. Gonzaga is a unicorn and good for them. They have become a BB blue blood along with Duke, Kansas, NC, Kentucky, etc. Every year 50-55 NCAA Tourney spots will go to blue bloods and low tier conference champs. All but Utah, BYU and USU must win their conference championship to get to the tourney. If not Conference champs, Utah, BYU and USU are fighting with a lot of teams for those last +/-15 at large bids left. They need a pretty special year to snag one, since there are nearly 350 DI teams. The only anomaly is Coach K has a blue blood salary at a non-blue blood BB school, which is on the AD and administration.

Jim Boylen left the Utes program in shambles. Coach K rebuilt it, and now he is building towards the next step forward. It would be a mistake to fire him. It would be just plain stupid and arrogant.

I guess my biggest problem with the Coach K Utes program is watching players like Tillman, struggle to improve, players like Van Dyke never given a trusted green light to shoot until his senior year (he was always pulled if he wasn't hitting his shot early during is first three seasons which left him doubting himself), and watching the Utes get some poor character guys into the program like Devonte Hendrix and Devon Daniels. The coaching staff needs to make the players feel more trusted and they need to be more thorough with character evaluations. I don't care if guys transfer out because they have ants in their pants, and unreasonable expectations for playing time. But it seems like we have had a few too many poor character guys, and I would like to see that disappear; this may be an unreasonable expectation.

Coach K has done an overall good job. The Utes just need to take some significant steps forward over the next three years, and I think we will.

    Go Utes!!!

  • utahute69 Laguna Niguel, CA

The coach does a great job recruiting smaller guards and forwards. The big guys with size and speed are a premium group and are difficult to get. But, solid recruiting with emphasis on getting the big bodies would put Utah in a better position to advance into the playoffs. We see other schools in average conferences picking off the same type of athletes that Utah needs. The problem could be the fact that coach K isn't willing to take a chance with jocks that may need more attention in terms of academics and off court problems. I understand that fact, but it goes with the job if you want to compete at the highest levels.

I think Coach Krystkowiak's salary is immoral and totally unjustifiable period! But so is the salary of many other college hoop coaches, not to mention the insane college football coach salaries. As a BYU fan, I think it is bad enough what they pay Coach Rose given his team's mediocre performance in recent years and yet his salary is likely a third of Utah's coach.

I really wish Universities across the nation would slash all football and basketball coaches salaries to under say $200,000 a year (and that is for the major University programs).

Put that extra money to lowering ticket prices and such so that average people can afford to take their family to the games. How many people would feel like a king if they were paid even $200,000 a year?
