The main point is Ludwig does a good job with QBs whether they are top talent or
not. And if he develops Rising into an above average talent, then that is
awesome and probably good enough to compete for a championship. Some won't
pan out, but the difference between a pac-12 championship this year was
basically 1 fluke play and maybe 15 yards more on a single drive to hit a field
goal.
People say the pac-12 is down in Football, but Washington
played Ohio St. as good as or better than Michigan, Penn St. and the rest of the
Big 10. Utah was a letdown, but there wasn't a talent gap. It was some
backup mistakes from guys replacing Huntley, Moss, and Covey. Oregon beat Mich

Chances are very good he wins that starting spot. In 2019, he won't be

this.
It's a great situation and opportunity for him. Learn the

Tuttle and Daniels both are top notch talent. So their losses will always be
felt. However, Ludwig turned a San Diego St QB named Derek Carr into an NFL guy.
He almost did the same with Brian Johnson at Utah. He was doing the same thing
at Vanderbilt at a school that is the basement of the SEC and made them
competitive.
If Ludwig likes the guy, I think he has a good shot.
Before you spout he was 3rd string at Texas, remember the same is true of Tuttle
at Utah. He was 3rd string because Elhinger is a top QB in the country already
and they want an experienced backup in their Junior. His 3rd string doesn't
mean talent, it just means experience wise. He was named 3rd string above
another Texas recruit in the same class that was also 4 stars. So he was better
than another top recruit.
The fact we finally have another QB option
could impact notable recruits (Nacua).

Being embarrassed in this case doesn’t have anything to do with BYU or point spread, but everything to do the division winners of the PAC 12 once again laying an egg, for the 2nd year in a row, when it came to matching up against the leaders of other P5 conferences.
Bottom line, your best couldn’t handle their best.

Im not sure why byu fans consistently comment on articles about a team they have lost to 8 times in a row. A team that hasn’t beat a team that has finished the season in the top 25 for a long time. A team that rips on the PAC 12 but can barely squeak out a win against the bottom of the conference now and again and celebrates in the locker room like they won a playoff game. When you finally have some success, not moral victory success, actual wins and losses success leading to end of year rankings, then you can talk smack. Until then, stick to your attendance smack talk.
@wAKC:
"I believe there was a bit of hype surrounding the transfer from Alabama"
A little bit of hype is right, not much more. It was clear he was not going to complete for significant play time at QB. In fact, most of the talk about him was whether or not they would convert him over to another position. The only reason this had as much hype is it did is because he was coming back to his home state. Just a memory refresher for you there.
As far as Texas being "the same" school that your team played all those years ago - LOL! Lucky for your team UMass wasn't the same team in 2018 as it was in 2017. How embarrassing would that have been?
Thanks for your extreme concern for all things Utah. Don't worry too much, we'll be just fine. We'll be ready for #10 when Rising and Shelly battle it out for starting QB in 2020. Oh, you mean except for Oregon, of course, when they actually...played in the National Championship game. Right?
KH
I don’t recall any team from the PAC 12 being included in any serious national championship discussions since USC in 2004.
In 2018, the highest ranked team in the PAC 12 barely made it into the Top 10, and both PAC 12 division winners were embarrassed in their bowl games.
And let’s not forget, in 2017, the entire conference was mauled during bowl seadon, finishing 1-8, the worst bowl record for a major conference ever.
As hard as it may be for PAC 12 fans to accept, no amount of putting lipstick on that pig is going change that weak P5 sister perception, regardless of how many PR firms the conference employs.

No, you must be mistaken. The Texas team that byu thumped was a few years ago. See, with college football, there is a lot of turnover cause players only get 4 years of eligibility. So there probably isn't a single player on the Texas team now that was on that team back when byu played them. This Texas team was a legit Top 25 team, whereas the Texas team byu beat wasn't bowl eligible.

“People say the pac-12 is down in Football...”
Except for USC, UCLA and Arizona being down substantially, and Colorado being just as bad as they’ve always been, the PAC 12 is about the same as it’s been since Utah joined - the weak sister of the P5’s - the P5 that is seldom in CFP discussion, and never in the National Championship discussion.
The conference of champions - except in football and men’s basketball.
"National championship is in the bag now."
"No doubts we will be the National Champions with him at the helm."
Leoncoog & Onlyacoog:
I know some BYU-P fans can't wait to proclaim NC's, but you've got the wrong guy--there were no press conferences at Iggy's.
The main point is Ludwig does a good job with QBs whether they are top talent or not. And if he develops Rising into an above average talent, then that is awesome and probably good enough to compete for a championship. Some won't pan out, but the difference between a pac-12 championship this year was basically 1 fluke play and maybe 15 yards more on a single drive to hit a field goal.
People say the pac-12 is down in Football, but Washington played Ohio St. as good as or better than Michigan, Penn St. and the rest of the Big 10. Utah was a letdown, but there wasn't a talent gap. It was some backup mistakes from guys replacing Huntley, Moss, and Covey. Oregon beat Mich St. The real story is the country is down against two teams (Clemson and Bama who own college football right now.) Everyone else is just an afterthought.
Wallbanger:
"Also, too bad Conover was downgraded to a three star as per Rivals and 24/7 sports. I wonder how Harmon will spin that?"
He doesn't need to spin it because it isn't true. Per 247 composite Conover is a 4 star QB with a tiny fraction between him and Riser (.8971 and .9096)...looks like you're the only one in the spin cycle.
@blackattack - Orem, UT
Per transfer rules Rising has to sit next season. Then in 2020 he will battle for the starting QB spot.
Chances are very good he wins that starting spot. In 2019, he won't be "any string" on the depth chart. He comes to Utah knowing all of this.
It's a great situation and opportunity for him. Learn the system under Ludwig and take over after Huntley.
At that point, it's more likely that Shelley will have to make a transfer decision. He will be a RS-Jr. with 2 to play 2.
@No playoff for U - Salt Lake City, UT
Utah is NOT the school that claims their QBs are going to be Heisman winners. That's a different instate school that does that.
Utes are only claiming Rising is a good recruit. We are excited about him. Now we get to see if he pans out. Same with all recruits.
But certainly glad he picked Utah!! Excited about this kid.
Also, who said Rising couldn't "cut it" at Texas?
Rising was a Freshman last season. Elinger is one of the best QBs in the nation and will be a Jr., so.....And Tom Herman red shirted Rising last yr, his freshman season.
Let a team be excited about a recruit for heaven' s sake.
I have a hard time believing he'll stay three years. He sat out at Texas and transferred because he was third string as a true freshman. Exactly why Tuttle transfers.

Not sure if he will ever get playing time. Someone else will have to go or get hurt for him to play.
No playoff for U "interesting how much hype Utah fans heap on QB transfers who couldn’t cut it at more talented programs."
Is that why BYU doesn't get many transfers in? They view the players as "can't cut it elsewhere"?
BYU needs to recognize that transfers are a part of modern football, and adapt.
Rising is a traditional transfer, but I am curious. Has BYU ever gained a grad transfer? They're losing a couple of grad players transferring out, but I don't remember any coming in. Ever.

To those minimizing this by pointing out he was 3rd string at Texas, please stop. He was a freshman...and I can tell you firsthand no one is starting at Texas over Elhinger until he goes to the NFL. If you haven't had the privilege (or in my case the demise) of watching Elhinger, he's a good one...think of Tim Tebow if he could actually pass.

Interesting question. Rising was actually 3rd string, behind one of the best college QBs in the nation and another former University of Texas starter. Rising was a freshman last yr. beating out another highly rated freshman for the #3 spot.

"Now lets see... This guy was a 4th string QB at Texas correct ???"
Now let's see...at BYU-P, you guys are hanging your hopes on a guy who had zero P5 offers out of high school, correct???
Tuttle and Daniels both are top notch talent. So their losses will always be felt. However, Ludwig turned a San Diego St QB named Derek Carr into an NFL guy. He almost did the same with Brian Johnson at Utah. He was doing the same thing at Vanderbilt at a school that is the basement of the SEC and made them competitive.
If Ludwig likes the guy, I think he has a good shot. Before you spout he was 3rd string at Texas, remember the same is true of Tuttle at Utah. He was 3rd string because Elhinger is a top QB in the country already and they want an experienced backup in their Junior. His 3rd string doesn't mean talent, it just means experience wise. He was named 3rd string above another Texas recruit in the same class that was also 4 stars. So he was better than another top recruit.
The fact we finally have another QB option could impact notable recruits (Nacua).
I don’t wish anything bad upon Tuttle because he left. And from the many things I’ve heard and read, he only bailed because daddy couldn’t handle him sitting on the bench. As far as Daniels goes, it was a similar situation. Jayden and dad LOVED Utah, but mommy didn’t. Who knows if either are 100% true, but it made sense from the people I talked to ( a couple of which work at the U) and stuff I read.
You can never be too deep at QB; last year was a prime example of that. Good get; welcome aboard young man.
Now lets see... This guy was a 4th string QB at Texas correct ???
@Cougsndawgs - West Point , UT
Good points.
Tuttle can be a special player. He transferred but that doesn't make him less of a QB. I wish him luck.
Jayden Daniels was our #1 target for this cycle. He is going to be a good one....for ASU unfortunately. But Rising takes away that sting.
Rising likely fits Ludwigs offense better than he would have TT's. Daniels fits TT's to a T. Not more TT and we didn't get Daniels. So......next man up.
Really happy with getting both Ludwig and Rising. Future looks bright.

"Pro-style and talented runner...good fit...Ludwig will certainly know what to do with him.
Jello,
You are obviously disappointed and very worried. lol. Go Utes!"
Actually, not disappointed or worried. I don't think Shelly is the answer to your offensive shortcomings and this young man just might be. With Tuttle gone, you needed him. Your ceiling just got much higher.
And unlike your feelings toward BYU, I like Utah and most of their fans.
Azute:
"Jack who?
Jayden who?"
Yeah right...unless you're crazy you would have taken Jayden all day every day over Rising. Not a knock on Rising, he's a good player, but Jayden is next level talent, and would have easily been the highest rated QB in Utah history.
And I understand why people are knocking Tuttle...it's what fans do when a guy transfers, but he was rated higher than Rising for a reason, guy can sling it. He remains the highest rated QB in Utah history...so there's that.
"He’ll have to sit out a season, per NCAA transfer rules, and won’t be able to play for the Utes until 2020."
100% incorrect.
His declared major (Criminal Justice) was not offered at Texas, but it is at Utah. NCAA laws waive the one year waiting period if you're transferring to a school that offers your major from one that didn't.
He will be eligible in 2019.
@ Cougsndawgs,
I hear ya dear brutha. Utah needs a couple breaks indeed. And, Rising is a very good QB in all ways. I was sullied that your UGA squad lost their bowl game. We Utes got creamed to by Northwestern, sadly. I hope your Georgia team steams-out of the gate next season! Cheers, Mike.
And there's the first fruits of Ludwig. He's not just a good OC, but has a reputation for developing QBs. Great hire for Whit and the Utes.
I watched Rising's film.........he is the REAL DEAL, unlike poser Jack Tuttle. Rising can play some serious QB folks! We needed a lil' luck, and we got a true gem for the future!
Gooooooo Utes!
National championship is in the bag now. Nice third stringer from Texas. Yahoo.
No doubts we will be the National Champions with him at the helm.
What a tremendous development and recruiting win for Utah.
This is the kind of player we need to keep moving forward, getting better.
And a great opportunity for Rising. Should be a 3 yr starter in a great conf. against competition he is familiar with and playing for a very good OC who is excellent with QBs.
Couldn't be more excited!!!
This is "THE GUY." The 3rd string guy at Texas is defiantly the future. I can't wait for him to get on campus. The track record we have with developing young QB's is what will get him over the top. Pac-10 for life.
Great news...add this to some of the other potential gets in February and I am excited!!
Pro-style and talented runner...good fit...Ludwig will certainly know what to do with him.
Jello,
You are obviously disappointed and very worried. lol. Go Utes!
The better question is will the uTE offensive scheme adjust to a pro style quarterback or will they continue the RPO and find this kid on the outside looking in?
Time will tell.
We really needed this to happen!
Goooooo Utes!
Huge get for Utah. Look at some of his offers when he was recruited:
Texas
Oklahoma
Alabama
Arizona
Arizona State
California
LSU
Miami
Michigan
Nebraska
North Carolina
Oklahoma State
Ole Miss
Oregon
Oregon State
Penn State
TCU
UCLA
Washington State
West Virginia
Good unexpected get and fills a big hole at a minimum for depth. And no I don’t think he will move to defense. Too great a need at QB.
This young man is special and will be special for the U. Excited to have him learn from Ludwig and team. This grab will also help with other recruits. Wait until February when a few more significant recruits switch their commitment to the U or come here first choice. Big get. Welcome to Utah Utes.
Cool! Hope you can help take us over the top! I'd love to have 2 or 3 years equivalent to 2009 (no losses, beat Alabama big time in Sugar Bowl - recognized mid-2018 as best team in 2008/2009 - this, of course, would be great to be avoided, by playing in & winning NCAA Championship game).
Welcome Cameron Rising!
Go Utes!

Love to see Utah play Tuttle's IU team somewhere down the road.

Wouldn't that be sweet?
Welcome to "The best snow on Earth."
Jack who?
Jayden who?
Welcome aboard Cameron! Welcome to #UteNation!
Go Utes!
6-foot-1 and 235-pound QB
Finally a QB with PAC-12 size.
Go UTES!
Welcome to Utah Cam.
Glad you're here.
Congrats to both Utah and Cameron Rising. One 4-star quarterback out (Tuttle ranked # 15 QB senior HS) and one 4-star quarterback in (Rising ranked # 11 QB senior HS). Hope it works out well. Love to see Utah play Tuttle's IU team somewhere down the road.
The latest Heisman candidate for Utah.
Excellent news! Welcome to the family Rising. Very excited for the future at Utah. Especially with Ludwig coming back.
And before the usual trolls chime in, and say “he’ll end up on defense anyways”. Maybe ask Paul Kruger, Sean Smith and Chase Hansen how that worked out. As well as many others. Whittingham, the master at putting athletes where they’ll succeed most on the field.
Now we just need 12 more QB recruits, and we’ll have as many as the other team that was relevant...ish 35 years ago.
Go Utes!!!
