C'mon..........we are not in the "one and done".......or NBA farm team........business. I watched the game last night. I didn't see anybody not trying. At one time there were three freshmen (real student athletes) on the floor with a JC transfer and a sophomore (something that Duke, Kansas, Kentucky don't have). If you could do a better coaching job......then apply for the position. If you don't like what you see......then stop watching and turn in your tickets. As for me and my house.........Go Utes!

As a Ute fan I will accept getting no respect from the PAC 12. I will take it any day over being a middle of team of the WCC.

Utah is young. Utah has talent. They will be even better next year. Washington plays zone. Utah didn't handle the zone very well. Washington is better than Utah right now. Utah is getting better. Utah has a good ways to go. People who get paid for watching sports should know the situation this year up on the Hill. Being a true fan who pays for my ticket, I take the good with the bad nor am I blind. As for other schools in the State, I could care less. They all have their problems.

    Good Utes.

P5 is a football connotation, not basketball. There are dozens of small catholic schools who compete every year for the NCAA bids and would beat PAC12 teams like ugly step children.

With the exception of UCLA under the greatest coach in history, and Arizona over the years, the PAC12 has never been a good basketball conference. Basketball is an Eastern and mid western sport. Always has been. They get the best players because those players play basketball from the age of 6. We know the deal. Inner-city kids play hoops.

Utah and BYU have been pretty good over the years. But P5 is meaningless as a predictor of basketball rankings.

    @golfrute,

If you think there was high player turnover with coach K, you probably also remember Majerus don't you? He lost 1/2 of the players he signed because he ran them off. He is probably the most destructive coach to young men that has ever coached in the state of Utah. Success is sometimes elusive. Unfortunately that era of Ute b-ball success was stained with the total disregard for personal development. Even though I don't like Coach K very much, he's better with the young men in his program. Hats off to the other in state coaches like Utah State's new coach, Randy Ray and Dave Rose.

Mocked BYU! The little brother? The big boys are in the PAC12!

Well! The WCC is 10-7 against PAC 12 opponents this year. Who's the little brother now?

    -----

You still are, you have 3 NCAA and 1 play-in in win nearly 25 years. SAD!

We all agree PAC-12 is pathetic, including Utah, this year. So why are you're doing victory laps for beating a bad conference?

I think Utah Utes Probably needs to actually play All The Utah teams to be able to say who is the best brother and this year Utah State is the king

Why would a program keep a coach that hasn’t been to the NCAA Tourney in 3 years...
makes 3 million a year (or whatever big number)...
And has a 300 million dollar facilty as nice as anyone’s...
    Has boring basketball...
Spotty attendance because of poor recruiting..
    Etc
    No BYU homer or Aggie...
But from a business and success record this product produced stinks IMO

Utes are a team that has a LONG way to go but they do have some talent. Lots of first year’s players and expect a good recruiting class next year. Losing a shot blocking center to a broken foot didn’t help.

Coach LK needs to show the team improves as the year goes on and blend in the future Utes. Next year the team should be competitive enough to be on the NCAA bubble. Year after that is when they would expect to be pretty good. If not, it would be time to look for a different coaching option.

With the state of affairs as they are, this just proves that the so called P5 schools aren't any better than other schools (except perhaps football?) The P5 schools get paid big bucks because they have boasted about being so much better than every one else. ESPN isn't getting their money's worth, and they are finding out that the old saying "talk is cheap" can be very expensive. There is nation wide talk about doing away with the P5 designation and opening things up for all NCAA schools. If that happens, the P5 schools and their huge salaries will be in serious trouble, and that includes Utah, with their multi million dollar salaries. Even Utah and coach K are being investigated about Kuzma payola, but that aside, coach K keeps recruiting players, only to have them leave the program in bunches. Oh how I long for the good old days!

Mocking aside, Ute fans are thrilled to be in the conference. Name another conference out West that a school would rather be in? A bad year for the conference and the Utes. But that to won't last forever.

The U has amazing facilities; top 10 basketball center, terrific arena and Coach K makes $3M + per year. Somehow he can't figure out how to attack a matchup zone defense. Washington made the Utes look nervous and inexperienced.

Several players a year leave the program and blind fans say the departing players weren't a good fit. That's on Coach K. If you offer a scholarship you'd better know who you're getting. Granted, some level of player turnover is a part of college athletics, but it's reached a crazy level under Coach K.

I've been a season ticket holder for years, and it's sad to see the program in its current condition.

Utah does tend to do better as the year continues, but that maybe because the PAC is always overrated at the beginning of the year.

The MWC maybe the strongest basketball conference in the western USA this year. The PAC maybe a close 2nd. Thanks to Gonzaga, and no one else, the WCC will beat the Big Sky.

It will be interesting to watch as it plays out. Wish all the local teams well.

@ekute I couldn't agree more. We need to face harsh criticism if the U is going to make the changes necessary to improve. Nothing is gained by making fans feel better by masking the truth. I miss the days when the Huntsman center was packed and the team was beating everyone in sight...with the exception of Kentucky.

Harsh but spot on and I welcome it. Our program and our conference need a real change in direction...not a PR firm to paint ponies and rainbows. Keep it coming. There's no place for apathy up on The Hill.

"They’ll have to do what they usually do: surprise some people. Problem is, the act isn’t really a surprise." -- Brad Rock

    ------------------

    How so?

Despite turnover Utah has finished #4, #4, #2 (AP 13), and #3 (AP 19) in the PAC-12 over the last 4 seasons. Coach K's has a history of teams improving as the season progressed.

This year they seemed to have talent to at-least be competitive but instead they are absolutely awful and been thoroughly beaten even by average teams.

  • Pacer Bountiful, UT
    Jan. 11, 2019 11:37 a.m.

There's no way around the fact that Pac-12 has been a major disappointment this year, and the Utes are no exception. But it's weird that he starts the article basically saying "the media shows every year they aren't the greatest prognosticators", then disparages Washington's schedule by citing where their opponents were picked BY THE VERY SAME MEDIA. You could easily use KenPom ranking to show their victory over Texas A&M (KenPom #92, 3 spots ahead of BYU) wasn't that impressive. And by the way, Utah's current ranking of #140 makes this season ticket holder say "Yikes!" No postseason of any kind for the Utes this year.

A crazy note: New Mexico is even worse at #163 yet just blew the doors off of Nevada to end their hopes of an undefeated season.
