    Here’s another problem:

    An Utah’s current rate of winning conference championships during the last 6 decades (1959-2018), how many decades will it take Utah to match BYU’s 23 conference championships won since 1965?"

    Imagine that. A BYU fan more interested in the past, than the future of its own program. The glory years!
    How many more decades will it take for BYU to win another conference title, or any for that matter?

    Why didn’t Huntley complete 18 of 18, for 317 yards, 4 TDs, and 0 Ints against the #110th ranked team in the nation?

    It’s hilarious how Utah fans mock BYU’s true Freshman for having a bowl game like no QB in Utah history has even come close to regardless of the competition.

    -------------

    For the same reason Kyler Murray had a QB Rating of 151 against #93 Kansas.

    We don't mock Wilson, we mock BYU fans for the hype for a QB that will lead BYU to 5 to 7 wins next year.

    ———-

    You still haven’t explained why Huntley has never come close to matching Wilson’s stats in BYU’s bowl game.

    It’s hilarious how Utah fans are already hyping Utah as the favorite to win the PAC South and a lock to be ranked,

    but whine about BYU fans showing even the slightest degree of optimism for 2019.

    The hypocrisy on the hill knows no limits.

    “It is of little credit to Utah schools that gauge their success against other Utah schools as their measure of success.”

    You obviously don’t understand the nature of rivalries that started long before any of these conferences existed.

    BYU, Utah and Utah St began playing each other in various sports in the 1890’s, and fans from all three live next to each and sometimes in the same household.

    A loss to USC or Boise St is all but forgotten next week.

    A loss to your rival can live on for generations.

    Although they will refuse to admit it, there’s not a team on the planet that Utah fans relish beating or hate losing to more than BYU.

    Ask a die hard Utah fan how many times Utah has beaten USC in the last 10 years, and they’ll have to look it up.

    Ask that same fan how many times Utah has beaten BYU in the last 10 years, and they can answer instantly.

    It is of little credit to Utah schools that gauge their success against other Utah schools as their measure of success. None of the four major football schools in Utah are in the same conference. So there is no reason to compare. There is no bowl game or championship game in Utah.

    You need to start using success against other teams in your conferences to gauge how successful you are. Congratulations to Utah State on a great end to a great season. Congratulations to Utah and Weber State on good seasons, albeit with disappointing endings. And Congratulations to BYU on your winning record and bowl victory.

    May you all continue to improve next season!

    True

    “Utah fans will probably argue otherwise since the two teams didn't play each other.”

    That’s precisely why some Utah fans want to stop playing BYU.

    “Time for Utah AD Mark Harlan to bring back the USU-Utah rivalry that Dr. Chris Hill... ended.”

    Utah could easily do this by scheduling home-and-homes with Utah St, instead of playing teams like UNI and San Jose St.

    The main reason Utah stopped playing Utah St is the Utes are scared to death of playing the Aggies in Logan.

    "A serious argument can be made that the utes best win on the year ended up be against the Cougs as the utes never beat a good team in the pac12 this year."

    Actually, that argument cannot be made at all. Not if we're being "honest" anyway. The indy-WACers finished unranked, barely above .500, and narrowly edged the only team with a winning record via a missed FG. Utah on the other hand beat TWO 9-win P5 teams in Stanford and Oregon -- both of whom finished in the "receiving votes" category of the final AP poll. So how would beating a 7-6 midmajor, that took us only 14-min to do, count as a bigger win than either of those two P5 programs? You just made that up. How frantic and emotional of you.

  • Just the FAX Olympus Cove, Utah
    Jan. 9, 2019 10:30 a.m.

    There are two reasons some BYU haters want to shut down the rivalry:

    1. Just to “stick it” to BYU, which won’t hurt BYU at all because there are plenty of other P5’s and quality G5’s who would love to schedule home-and-homes with BYU

    2. To be able to “claim” Utah superiority over BYU without having to prove it on the field/court

    As we see on this board daily, there are numerous insecure Ute fans on this blog who obsess over digging up obscure metrics which they then claim “proves” that Utah is superior

That 1 game was the difference in both teams seasons ..."

    This is exactly the point I made in a comment a few months back. Utah for the past 8 games has been better than BYU...no excuses. However in each of those years save last year, if BYU had won that game against Utah, BYU would have ended the season in the top 25 and Utah left out.

    Even last year if BYU wins, they surely would not have been top 25, but Utah would most certainly not been top 25 also.

    BYU - Utah is rated one of the top 10 rivalry games in the nation, brings in big ratings and revenues, is almost always decided by less than a score and is extremely entertaining.

    Congrats Utah for being the better team of late....but shutting down the series? It's not going to happen.

    Oh the joys of winning a bowl game against the #106th ranked team in the nation. It gives BYU fans un-inhibited optimism.

    Here are some facts to consider when stating BYU is on the "upswing". Oh, and congrats on your the new coat of paint for your stadium.

    BYU's record this yr.

    1-3 v. PAC 12 - a conference all BYU fans say is the worst in P5
    1-2 v. MWC - a conference BYU is too good for
    1-1 v. the MAC and 0-1 in the regular season. And the MAC team you beat in your potato bowl finished ranked #106 and didn't win the MAC

    In the last 3 yrs. BYU has gone 20-19. And in the last 2 have accumulated 15 losses.

    BYU has gone 0-4 v. instate rivals over the last 2 seasons.

    Zach Wilson's QBR v. NIU? 25.9 with BYU not scoring a TD in a 7-6 loss at home in Provo.

    BYU squeaked into a bowl game at 6-6 in regular season play.

    But that is better than the 9 losses the yr. before. So, technically BYU is on the upswing.

    Real Ute---Texas is so lucky to have you live there---you seem like the perfect fan for UT Austin. With respect to your disrespectful comment about selling LES to UVU: If I were of a like mind I'd suggest you put a hold on expanding the tiny 45,000 seat RES until the utes actually appear in the Rose Bowl (will be a long time, I'm afraid sir, just like U of Az) and if they have a 3-game losing streak after next season's opener I'd cancel expansion all together. I've seen the Cougars go from a losing team under Hudspeth to the Lavell Edwards era to all the other things since. Teams fortunes rise and fall; for example Nebraska, Florida State, USC, Missouri, UCF, Tennessee, BYU, UCLA, Utah State, Air Force, LSU, Wisconsin, Michigan....etc. Utah is not exempt---they will come back to earth one day, w/o a NC; I hope you'll be able to cope when it happens because it's on it's way. The PAC12 as a conference is barely holding their head above water (1-8 and 3-4 records in bowls these past 2 years, this year winning 3 games by a grand total of 4 points) and the fact they are a P5 conference is the ONLY reason they have so many teams in the early rankings; then they fall out.

    BYU didn't go to a bowl the year they were 4 - 9, but everyone on the hill dismisses the fact they were 9 - 4 the previous year and utah didn't go to a bowl the first TWO years they were in the PAC10.2. In fact, that first year USC was ineligible and utah had a greased schedule so they promptly got whipped by Colorado, the worst road team in the country at the time. This year they finally backed into the South championship when Az St lost to Oregon, and were "going to smell roses" only to have a champion's display of offense against Washington. BTW- how did Washington do in the Rose Bowl, anyway? Every South div bowl team lost this year, including utah, who finally played somebody in that game and they lost handily. Mock BYU's opponent, but they beat the line by about 20 points...something u wished they could do. So far BYU has played as many New Year's Day Rose Bowl games as the U and the Y has a national championship and a Heisman trophy winner...not U. U can't even keep an OC for more than two years; one for most of them. A current 2-game losing streak seems about right for the mighty utes this year and it easily could expand to three in a row this fall. Too funny.....

    Utes have zero pac12 championships, 4 MWC Championships (1 of those is a co-title) and 2 WAC Co-championships...one of those in 1964. Are you really trying to boast about 20 championships from more than 60 years ago?

    Real fact: Utah has finished the season in the AP top 25 six times ever and five of those are since 2000. USU has finished in the AP top 25 three times and two of those are in the last six years. It sounds like the Ute and Aggie legacies are pretty similar?

    Another fact: I'm looking for Utah's wins over a top 25 program this year...I can't seem to find them?

    Another fact: Three, THREE, MWC teams were ranked ahead of 10 of the pac12 schools and all of the pac12 South?

    Yet another fact, there is no such thing as #29 in the top 25...unranked is unranked.

    Final fact: Utah wins a weak SOS pac12 south div title, in a division with four teams with overall losing records and only two bowl participants...who both lost their bowl games. That was the worst P5 division in the country and also worse than both MWC divisions.

    Bottom line...it wasn't a good year for U.

    ---------------

    Yes congrats to Utah State, they should have beat Michigan State and been ranked in the top 20.

    As far as your dig at Utah:

    Wins vs Final Ranked AP top 25 Bowl Opponents
    * Utah 3
    * BYU 2
    * Utah State 0

    Conference Championships
    * Utah 24 (over last 20 years: 4 MWC)
    * BYU 23 (4 MWC)
    * Utah State 12 (0)

    Today, your VHS conference championships are as relevant as our "leather helmet" championships.

    In 2019:
    * Utah will be loaded with talent and a PAC-12 contender, already picked as a top 20 team.
    * Utah State will most likely go 0-2 vs P5 and win 9 to 10 games.
    * BYU will be 0-3 vs PAC-12, beat BYU, and win 5 to 7 games, finishing a distant 3rd in state.

    I am always amused by the Cougar belief "No team is better than us. We only lose because of our own mistakes." Opponents don't have players with skill greater than BYU. "Impossible!!"

    Apparently, Utah didn't have the skill to cause takeaways, so BYU politely "gave" five. Good thing you got rid of that coach!

    This year, Utah State and Boise aren't better than BYU. The Cougars only lost because they made mistakes. Or the refs made mistakes. Or the QB was "leashed". Hard to keep up.

    Wisconsin lost the game against BYU because the kicker missed a field goal. Was that a "gift" from Wisconsin, or did the kicker miss because BYU was superior?
