“AZute---Which school has a NC? Or a Heisman trophy? Which school has played in a Rose Bowl game on Jan 1st? (Hint: They're tied in that category.) Which team had the opportunity to win a NC in 1984? (Hints: Both of them, but only once accomplished it; they played and beat Bo Didley Tech and the game was in Salt Lake City that year!) When you've done something more than beat your rival 8 times in a row, many games by a field goal that was made or missed when that rival is in a down cycle, give me a call. In the meantime, keep eating those nails for breakfast. Nice try---(forgive my plagiarism of your very clever two-word compliment.)”

In other words, “You’re 100% accurate, AZUTE1, I have zero refutation to your utter brilliance!”

    Nice try.

“You mean like Utah fans guaranteeing that Utah will beat BYU in 2019?”

We have 8 straight & counting/13 of 16/19 of 26/61-34-4 in support....Conversely, byu has zero, period.

    Nice try.

“Not according to Utah fans like U who mocked BYU mercilessly for setting a goal (quest) to be undefeated in 2008.”

byu had previously gone undefeated precisely once in their entire existence [still the case] & their typical plethora of 2 stars [still the case] in “support”.

    Nice try.

“...however, the least of BYU's problems is the qb position.”

    Well said.
First and foremost, they need running backs who can really take pressure off the passing game. Note I used plural since our attrition rate is so high.

Next we need receivers with great speed, great athleticism, and great hands. We have Bushman who is probably NFL quality, but we need more from the wideouts in terms of separation and tenacity.

Finally we need a reliable and consistent O-line.

We’ve got the QB..., maybe two. If we can improve in the other 3 areas and minimize the number of stupid coaching decisions and not be afraid to air the ball out, BYU will have a potent offense.
Grimes needs to come to grips that it doesn’t have to be a balanced offense! Did we not all witness Alabama get totally dismantled by an extremely efficient air attack delivered by a freshman QB?

    let's roll

2-2 versus Utah, USC, Tennessee and Washington would be more than sufficient to keep the fanbase happy.

Even 1-3, with a win over Utah, would be fine, although I expect BYU to do better than that.

“Let's see how great Wilson is after a few more months under Roderick.”

He’s already better than any QB at the U.

No QB in Utah history has even come close to going 18-for-18, 317 yards, 4 TDs, 0 Ints, 322 QB rating, especially a true Freshman, in his first bowl game, after starting only half a season.

Yeah sure - let's create a false quarterback controversy. Zach Wilson is the alpha dog and everybody knows it. I'm thrilled to hear that the Hall kid is very good; however, the least of BYU's problems is the qb position.

Didnt Dick Harmon have an article last summer that claimed that according to coaches Critchlow was the next great BYU QB?

Let's see how great Wilson is after a few more months under Roderick.

I wonder what happens first, BYU makes its first CFP ranking or Conover for Heisman hype?

The only certain thing about next year is that fans and the press will be lamenting Wilson’s perceived regression after the first 4 games.

His numbers this year were against the softer part of the schedule. He won’t put those numbers up in September. He will inevitably struggle to some degree, and folks will believe he’s regressed and may start pining for whoever ends up as number 2.

It’s a downside of the unbalanced schedule. The September schedule is a great one, but no one should anticipate that Wilson will match his late season numbers of this year until the Y gets to the back half of its schedule next year.

Even at this early stage of his development it is clear that Zach is a model D1 collegiate quarterback.

I know that before his BYU career is over Wilson will lead the Cougars to unprecedented success... both on and off the field.

My prediction is that in a few short months the BYU boys in blue lead by Zach Wilson will stun the world of collegiate football.

D1 coaches and athletic directors across the nation will look to BYU and Zach Wilson as the gold standard of collegiate football programs.

In the meantime... I so look forward to many more informative articles by Mr. Harmon illuminating the unparalleled commitment, character and skill of young Mr. Zach Wilson.

Reality in college football is that highly regarded kids want to play. At most schools the kid on the bench looks to transfer. Might not happen with these two QBs but wouldn’t be surprising.

And despite an earlier post about starting next year 4-0, I think BYU will struggle. The backup QB likely gets some playing time.

Impossible when a 0-1 start is guaranteed & 4 games including 3 good PAC-12 teams, the sort byu has never beaten [good PAC-12 teams].

Not to mention, a SEC program too rich in pride to lose to a mediocre midmajor program like byu.

“Excited for the continuation of the team we saw at the bowl game.”

Mr. Harmon, you've identified a "need" for Zack Wilson. However, there are other needs. What about a running back? Fast receivers that can get open? Offensive line to protect and give time? A defense that can hold the opponent and keep the game close? Other needs?

Now if I were to prioritize these needs the one you identified would place about last on the list.

Sir289: “BYU will start 2019 season 4-0.” Utah, USC, Washington, Tennessee??????? Your comment lost it’s credibility with that ending statement. Are you counting on earthquakes, floods, fires, pestilence or translation? It will take them all to clear the way for that to happen. You ought to be hoping for 4 wins for the season. But I admire your fanatic fan support- isn’t that the way it is supposed to be for every preseason? Good luck to us all.

Oh Dick, why can't a talented BYU QB just look to his own skill-set without contending that putting additional pressure would produce greater results. This young man is special and BYU fans should learn to just sit back, relax and watch that talent being manifested on the field.

  • cmsense Kaysville, UT
    Jan. 6, 2019 7:59 a.m.

It is always good to have more depth. I didn't like how many times BYU had designed runs with Wilson, but it seemed like too much. Leave the running mostly to broken or disrupted plays or when everyone is covered. Grimes wasn't here when Hill got injured so often.

More important than the others trying to give Wilson a push with competition, because Zac has shown he should be out there unless he is injured or BYU is blowing out someone, is we need to upgrade the roster around him.

BYU somehow needs to find 2-3 quality running backs to prevent defenses from making BYU one dimensional. It doesn't matter how good you are, there are some good defenses out there and BYU can't have them going after the QB about every play.

Also, BYU needs a receiver that can stretch the field. We have some quality TE's, but among the regular receivers there isn't anyone who is separating themselves from the others talent wise or speed wise.

I'm thoroughly impressed with Wilson, and having spent a lot of time with jaren on his mission he's such an impressive guy as well.

I'm not impressed by any byu QBs who played last year, none panned out, the future is the two named and Conover getting off his mission near the end of the tenure of Wilson and hall.

Curious about Wilson and a mission also, it's not mentioned but being at BYU can change plans (dallin holker announced his mission this week).

BYU needs a good QB stable, that's what BYU's history has been and what fans expect.

I do think that Jaren will push Zack and unfortunately it's highly unlikely to assume no injuries to them. My hope is that BYU gives incoming QBs quality time in games. Let them throw and let them learn.

Excited for the continuation of the team we saw at the bowl game. The younger players are impressive and the seniors put on their own show. Things are trending in the right direction.

Mr Harmon, this is a good and informative piece. Thanks.

Would you please consider an investigative piece wherein you look into what conferences would (1) welcome the program, (2) probably admit the program, (3) strongly consider the program, (4) not be interested in the program, or (5) just fall into the “heck no, never” category? I am sure many readers, BYU supporters, alums and fans of the other Utah teams would be very interested in this rather than just the average fan’s speculation on the topic. Please see what the effect of winning 9-10 games versus 5-7 games per year would be. Actually some conferences would rather admit a 6-7 win BYU than a 10 win BYU. Such an article would be extremely informative, interesting and would generate extensive discussion among the entire State’s universities’ fan bases. What do you say?

  • Sir289 ,
    Jan. 5, 2019 11:53 p.m.

I don’t agree with the premise of this article in the case of Zach. He is driven to perfection for his desire to compete, to win, and to perfect his skill for the next level and not because he needs some manufactured competition from fear of losing his position. If you do not see this then you do not see who he really is. This is his team and players are all behind him for this to be his team. He has exceptional skill that BYU has never seen at this stage of his development and he will set an all-time BYU record for a sophomore next year. The game will slow down for him considerably next year and the few mistakes he made this year will be a distant memory. BYU will start the season 4-0 book it!

Kind of cool how Wilson and several other freshmen are so excited to be at BYU. And according to an article, they are excited to all stay together there and make something great happen. We have a fine group of freshmen and this bunch is a welcome group of athletes.

BYU is most fortunate to have Wilson and Hall. Jaren is a terrific young man and a driven and talented athlete. So is Wilson.

I wish them the best and hope they are here to provide great plays for BYU. I suspect both will be needed as so many #1 QBs have found.

    Jan. 5, 2019 6:45 p.m.

If a “championship” culture is 6 wins and a bowl game in mid December in a cold place against a G5 team then BYU and Wilson need to focus on staying healthy. He already has the talent and skill set to meet those expectations. With the teams Sitake has been fielding, 5-6 wins should be automatic with an outside chance of getting 7 in years we have a weaker schedule.

Mr. Harmon, that is perhaps the best title for an article you have ever come up with! I would also add that Hall and Critchlow need to up their games to prove their worthiness to be the starter. I will say that one of Bronco's short comings was how he would favor (fall in love with) certain players, and fail to recognize the talent of others (Nielson/Hill comes to mind).
