The many years of porous defense, no backside help, sporadic free throw shooting %, poor free throw shooting technique, sporadic three point shooting, terrible three point defense and inability because of these things to hold any lead the offense may generate have become hallmarks of a Dave Rose team. The restriction on scholarships shouldn't be a problem, because he rarely plays more than 8 guys anyway, which rotation seems to shrink as the season wears on.
Player development seems to be up to the players. The number of players who have come to BYU during this era, become discouraged and left or been asked to leave, then gone elsewhere and shined is far too great to ignore. Contract extension leaves serious questions about Tom Holmoe.

There is nothing wrong with this team that Jimmer Fredette (or a clone) could not fix.

Lack of development. Lack of defense. Utter lack of coaching.
Rose looks like he’s tired and uninterested. I’m still blown away that he just got a raise and an extension.

Rose is just not, nor has he ever been, a defensive guru. Last year we saw improvement, but I think assistant coach Heath was the reason for the returned emphasis on that end of the court. I think Rose has lost his mojo, I'm not sure if he would even be hired by another University as a Head Coach, he just appears to me to be "doing time" until he can retire. This all clearly happened when Provo left the Mountain West Conference, it was a huge blow to the basketball department. Now they are stuck in a situation that is not really motivating, nor is it exciting. The Zag's got it going on, along with St. Mary's, and then a huge drop off to where the rest of the league resides. "Stuck" says it all.

The headline pic of this article says all
That needs to be said about Rose and his ideas and passion for the game. He is out of answers and the team is out of sorts ....... and fans out of patience.

The Deseret News sports writers try to walk a fine line and you can see that by listening to their PodCast. The football team is easy to talk about, coming off a win ..... etc ..... Sitake will finish his contract and there is some momentum in that program. So, what do the writers talk about most of the time ...... FB and recruits. It is bogus! Dave Rose and his teams performance this year and really the last 7 years has been a slow or fast downhill slide and it is the elephant in the sports room right now. Talk about it and or lose credibility! Contract extension for Rose? Based on what? Emery’s performance and the technical foul and attitude the other night in the loss? Status of the NCAA appeal of the vacated wins, scholly reductions, lack of institutional control ..... how about Holmoes unwillingness to speak to the media? Hold pressers? What protections or policies has BYU put in place to help keep the Emery antics from happening again and/or NOT being discovered by the athletic dept or bb program?

Covering these issues would show unbiased reporting. Matador reporting at best! You appear to be trying to help BYU but most just see it as poor reporting.

Lack of coaching in my opinion. The coaches recruited the "lack of talent" and also were unable to develop it.

No DEFENSE! Soft zone and sporadic matador defense. O-lay!!!

Dave coaches a guard type approach

Schemes for outside shooting are great.

Inside offense is without any coaching support or thinking.

The inside game is relegated to the following

    1. Guard drives to hoop and either kicks out or makes layup.

    2. Offensive rebound and put back

    3. Send ball into low post. If doubled, pass out to outside shooter or create on your own.

That's it. No interior give and go's. Hardly any pick and rolls. No interior screens. These are meat and potatoes for interior scoring. This has been a recurring issue in all the years of Dave Rose.

Our best player could score almost at will with an interior offense scheme. This issue is killing the team this year.

Dave needs a Jimmer to succeed and that's not on the team this year.

Teams would go in shock if Dave did this.

4 star players all over this roster with other 4 star players sent by the wayside ....look no further than coaching for the problems with this basketball team .... fresh off a new contract extension... are you kidding me !!

Maybe it's neither, but a lack of leadership! Time for new coaching blood!
