SOS has next to nothing to do with bowl games outside of the CFP and ny6.

Bowl games are business deals, it's based on who sells tickets. BYU got the Vegas bowl more than once outside of the proper pecking order due to strong ticket sales.

While most games have some tie-in, whoever can generate the most ticket sales gets selected to respective bowl games.

Regardless of how you frantically spin it,

team ranking trumps SOS because SOS is built into team ranking.

It’s very simple, so I don’t understand why this such a difficult concept for Ute fans to understand.

BYU finished 2011 ranked higher in AP, Coaches and Sagarin than Utah.

BYU was #26 AP and #25 Coaches.

Utah didn’t get a single vote in either poll.

“Those are the real reasons BYU had already leaped into the Top 10 by the 2nd week of the season”

Actually, the sole reason byu vaulted up into the rankings out of nowhere was 100% due to the fact people wouldn’t know how awful overrated PITT was for two more weeks, when OU hit town & destroyed them.

The voters @ the time actually thought byu beat a top-tier team, not the unranked/bowlless 3-7-1 team PITT in fact actually was.

    Arizona Ute,

Usually your comments are pretty good, this one is pretty ironic. You've got cherry picked stats like some of the trolls showing BYU to be worse than it has been and so while technically accurate, it's not a fair portrayal and thus is an unfair discussion. You can and have been better than that.

Is it hubris to defend your team against people mocking it? Personally I don't think so, I think that's strength of conviction or character. I'm not a fan of the BYU fans who come out in force when BYU beats Wisconsin (and over-rated team) then with the loss to Washington (expected) and USU (an under-rated team) act like cosmo came out of the closet and voted for Hillary. There are plenty of weak BYU fans.

BYU fans shouldn't have a superiority complex over Utah, at least in football. 8 straight is a huge task.

So why don't Utah fans have confidence?

Why the need to come in and put up stats against BYU?

At least your stats are accurate - but they aren't telling of the whole story, so why do it?

At what point would Utah fans say "we've surpassed them", 9 wins, 10, 20? I guess some have, and some never will, and that's the paradox here.

LOL at YOUR spin! Utah’s final SOS back in 2008 was 56th. Make no mistake here – we had to beat FOUR teams who’d finished ranked in the final AP poll that season…..two of whom had actually finished in the Top-10!”

Unlike Utah 2008, BYU actually did something immediately prior to 1984 to build credibility with the voters.

FIVE Top 12 finishes in six seasons, back-to-back Top 7 finishes, 6 straight conference championships, four straight Top 3 Heisman QBs, and a 24-game winning streak with three road wins over top 25 teams, convinced the majority of voters that BYU’s undefeated season was legit.

THREE straight unranked seasons, including a 0-27 shutout loss to 10-loss UNLV, and no conference championships, did build any credibility with voters especially when you didn’t beat a single decent team on the road.

Those are the real reasons BYU had already leaped into the Top 10 by the 2nd week of the season, while Utah didn’t crack the Top 10 until November, way too late to make a legitimate run at a NC.

    Final rankings are proof.

BYU was ranked #1 by all 5 major selecting organizations.

Utah wasn’t ranked #1 by a single major selecting organization.

Here is what baffles me with BYU fans........ Their "superiority complex". It's just strange.

Making fun of others. And for what? Did they do better?

You loose to your rival for 9 straight yrs. (8 straight games)
You don't finish a season ranked in the AP or BCS or CFP (NEVER been ranked in the CFP, EVER) for the last decade.
You have your worst record in 50 yrs. last yr., and barely make a bowl game this yr.
You lose to USU in consecutive seasons for the first time in 44 yrs.
You go 1-3 v. the PAC 12 South - yet rip on the PAC 12 South as being a weak division in a weak conference.
You go 1-2 v. the MWC - a conference BYU would not have won, in any yr. of independence, yet are too good to go back to.
You go 0-1 v. the MAC and are the only "out-of-conference" team NIU beat. At home in Provo.
You lost to UMass at home last yr. Their first road win in like 20 yrs.
You've had like 7 guys drafted in 10 yrs. Not even 1 per yr.
You've had offenses ranked in the 100's for three straight seasons. This yr. #108. Brutal.
BYU is NOT relevant in college football.

Yet, HUBRIS. Why? Because of flash in the pan relevance 35 yrs ago?

When you argue with people who have some disconnect with reality it just looks insane on both ends - eventually you should just realize that if somebody believes in something totally outlandish, walk away. For example, the notion that BYU didn't win and NC and that Utah did. One might argue that BYU was undeserving and that Utah got robbed, but the results are results.

as for the BYU Utah game a few weeks ago - BYU lost due to depth and coaching, we should be honest about that. We lost too many players and our players got gassed - also Grimes needs to playcall to put away games, this isn't an SEC team. That's reality on BYU's side that we need to accept - and there is a bucket full of reality on the side of Utah that they should accept also.

It's always fun seeing guys who claim not to care about a rivalry spending all day long discussing it frantically like their ego depends on it.

BYU fans have just absorbed 8 losses in a row, yet we smile and wear blue - it will be an interesting day when the inevitable happens and BYU wins one, more interesting if the trend reverses. For me it's just entertainment, for others it seems to be way more than that.

It's funny watching BYU fans try and rip on Utah. Utah has won 8 straight rivalry games. Close or not. 8 straight. Utah has finished 4 of the last 5 seasons ranked. And this yr won the PAC 12 South. BYU hasn't finished ranked in the AP or BCS or CFP (never ranked in this poll, ever) since before going indepdendent.

And Aunty, you like to cherry pick yrs. So, let's just go full football history. Not any given selected time frame.

Utah has won more conf. championships than BYU has, in history.
Utah has won more overall games in history.
Utah has a better winning % than BYU in history.
Utah has a 26 game advantage in the rivalry in history.
Utah has gone undefeated 5 times in history. BYU 1 time, well over a quarter century ago. Both have been the only undefeated team in FBS to end seasons.
Utah has more bowl wins that BYU in history.
Utah has gone to more BCS/NY6 bowls than BYU in history. (BYU = ZERO)
Both Utah and BYU have 3 top 10 finishes, and 2 top 5 finishes, in history.
Utah was invited to a P5 conference.

BYU rips on Utah for what? Oh, yeah, because of jealousy.

The truth is the ONLY reason Utah was able to make that 2nd half comeback is because BYU lost Corbin, Isaiah and Matt Hadley (their 5th string RB).

    Is that why Whitt said:

Hadley had 16 yards on 8 carries in the 2nd half?

Wilson rang up 27 points on the Utes on their home turf with only a 5th or 6th string RB to absorb some of the pressure.

FICTION: 2008 Utah was a NC contender, we received 16 AP National Championship votes.

    Nope!
Utah finished 6th in the final regular season BCS, AP and Coaches polls and a distant 2nd to Florida in one final poll. As much as Utah fans would like to pretend that Utah was a contender, U had ZERO chance of actually winning the NC.

FICTION: Alex Smith was a Hesiman [sic] contender.

    Nope!
Alex Smith finished FOURTH in the Heisman.
Ty Detmer (1st and 3rd), Marc Wilson (3rd), Jim McMahon (3rd), Steve Young (2nd), and Robbie Bosco (3rd twice) all finished higher in the final Heisman standings.

FICTION: More importantly, Utah is now a Top 25 P5 program.

    Sometimes.

U still have seasons like last year where U barely qualified for a bowl and 2012/2013 where U didn't even qualify for a bowl.

Even this year, after winning the PAC 12 South, Utah's amazing weak bowl opponent is

    unranked in AP Northwestern (8-5)

Nice try in moving the goalposts w/your tangential response.....Our bowl game SOS has zero to do w/respective ‘11 SOS rankings.....That stuff doesn’t work w/me.

Regarding NU, they finished #22 CFP ranked, the premiere poll of our day & a poll byu has never been ranked in for even a single week.

NU went 8-5 against the #9 ranked SOS, including whooping WISC & beating ranked Iowa en route to winning B1G West.....They also took undefeated ND & Michigan down to the wire.....NU would easily smash byu, period.

Nice try w/your misrepresentation of NU.

The losses of your kickers alone will be huge. The losses of Hansen, Barton, Blair and Ballard on defense will be significant. Your O-line next year may be in real trouble. Also your QBs just aren't at a P-5 level. If Zach Wilson really wanted to be a Ute he should have just walked on (recruitment of Tuttle notwithstanding) because it is clear to me that if he had done so he would be starting for Utah next year as a scholarship player.

    -------

Huntley and Shelley are not P5 QBs but Wilson is? You got jokes!

Wilson would be 3rd string at Utah. Who has he beat to show he's a P12 QB? Hawaii, UMass, New Mexico State?

Why is Cougar Nation so obsessed with our kickers? We beat BYU despite missing the only FG we attempted and a shanked 10 yard punt which lead to BYU only 2nd half TD on a short field.

Guy was backup in first game as Ute. Utah will reload on special teams and defense, that's just what we do.

That is why Utah will be picked as a P12 title contender next season.

    BYU 2019: 5-7 or at best 7-5

Also the statement that we lose "Dayan Lake Gwuakomole" is incorrect. Ghanwoloku is only a junior and will return next year -- our secondary is dramatically better when he is in the game (BTW, he selected us despite an offer from Utah). We also don't lose all of our LBs -- Zayne Anderson only played in four games this year so he is coming back.

Our only really significant losses will be Corbin Kaufusi, Sione Takitaki and maybe Squally Canada (depending on how our other RBs do next year -- we are loaded at RB for next year including Katoa, Burt, Fonua, Allgeier + 4-5 others). Austin Hoyt and Ului Lapuaho have contributed on the O-line but our younger guys actually performed better. Dylan Collie and Trey Dye at WR didn't really do much; returning receivers did more (and we will have a killer group of TEs next year). Brayden El-Bakri and Matt Hadley played hard but are replaceable. Shelton was an OK DB, but again replaceable. The comment about having only 1 QB is laughable -- we have an abundance of QBs on our roster. It is Utah that has a potential depth problem at QB.

The losses of your kickers alone will be huge. The losses of Hansen, Barton, Blair and Ballard on defense will be significant. Your O-line next year may be in real trouble. Regarding our bowl game with Western Michigan:

This won't be much of a game and I really can't motivate myself to make the trip to Boise despite the proximity. Due to injuries to their starting QB, Western Michigan will start a freshman QB with experience essentially in only four games who will be flustered by our defense for the entire game. Western Michigan does have two relatively good RBs but our defense is superior to anything Western Michigan encountered in MAC play. Western Michigan's defense is just plain awful. We likely will have a 21-point lead by halftime and win by 28.

    @London Joshua Sy,

BYu football isn't as good as Utah. Every darn time Utah turns on the jets, they whoop hapless Brigham at will. Sure, the games are close, but BYU never wins. In fact, the last 3 BYu wins in the last 16 games were utter last play miracles, nothing greater............the last BYU QB that had a really good game vs Utah was John Beck. BYu stands no chance vs Utah next year.

    @ pacmidmajor - Springville, UT

C'mon you seriously are trying to talk trash about the PAC 12 by touting the "1984 Nat'L Championship"?!

Washington Huskies were chosen as the National Championship Foundation's "1984 National Champs", which at the time was the equivalent of the BCS or Playoff Committee of modern day.

BYU was selected by the AP & Coaches poll as #1 because they were the only team with no losses. National Champs by default. That's it. BYU never played in a "Championship game". In fact their bowl game was against an unranked .500 team that was 6th place in their conference! Not 6th in the nation, 6th in their conference and unranked! Your Nat'l Championship was a fluke.

And everyone with any football knowledge back then knew that the PAC team - Washington Huskies were the better team, and would have destroyed BYU in a head-to-head matchup. However, UW chose to play the #2 team Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl because it was a bigger payout and a more prestigious bowl game and opponent. And won of course.

BYU only beat 1 ranked team in 1984, in their first game. And that ranked team, Pitt, ended the season with 3 wins. Your National Championship is garbage.

I think that lil' Zachary Wilson is the first BYU QB in a long time that has potential. He has a good pocket feel, throws with confidence to short windows and escapes/rushes really well in fact. I, personally, think he thinks too highly of himself, a Y trait always. His quotes are too much, and doesn't express reality. He played an okay game vs Utah is all. He should have been picked off at least 5 times, could have been a disaster in fact, and was completely shut down in the last 20 minutes of the Utah game other than a few scrambling rushes. He should work hard and talk far less.

I marvel at the Ute fans suggesting that if BYU simply said "Utah is better" that they'd walk away - as if they are held in some type of prison being captive until the BYU fans release them by doing something really simple - pointing to the outcome of the games.

Yes ute fans, if you didn't notice, Utah has won 8 in a row, 7 of which were narrow wins and so while Utah is better, BYU fans always want that next contest to come, it's an exciting game for both teams, including the team pretending to be bigger than the old rivalry.

But then when we BYU fans come on here, and read the last 8 comments in a row from Utah fans begging BYU to say "hey, Utah is better" it's pretty funny.

Red.diehard - I'm going to tell you something that might amaze you, Utah beat BYU in 2018, so Utah is better, and 2017 and 2016 and 8 in a row right now. So fly away little swoop, I've released you from your cage

but why, when the scores of the games are known to all of us, must some Ute fans sit down and plead for recognition on what's obvious already.

I think that the BYU fans know that we lost, can the Utah fans figure out that they won?

    BYU -
    - Doak Walker Award (nation's best running back,
    - THREE 11+ win, Top 15 finishes (more than Utah has in their entire history),
    - back-to-back-to-back-to-back AP Top 25 finishes (something Utah has never done),
    - 11 straight bowl games (Utah has never even come close),
    - road wins versus Ole Miss, Miss St, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, Mich St, Wisconsin (teams Utah has never beaten on the road)
    - BYU (39) finished higher in Sagarin than Pitt (55), Ga Tech (41, 56), W Va (49) and Indiana (69)

The ONLY reason Utah fans don't like to brag about accomplishments pre-2003 is because the Utes have no accomplishments pre-2003.

In fact, 2004 was the first of only TWO Utah teams to win 11+ games, to win a conference championship, and to be ranked in the AP Top 25.

It is absolutely hilarious to read all of these digs against Utah by BYU fans. BYU fans should tell me how many of their guys would start at Utah or even be on the 2-deep chart. I can’t wait until next year. I’m so glad the game is the opening game of the year because Utah will be up for it. I love Wilson...but one guy can’t do it on his own. Utah is setup to be stronger next year than this year. There is a major player set to come in for every guy that graduates or goes to the NFL early. Huntley finally figured out the offense before his injury. I can’t wait to be decked out in red at LES for one last time before Nelson axes the Football program just like he has some of the pageants. The football programs PR is no longer relevant for missionary purposes because of the global church membership footprint and the decline in the FB program. The only bummer is Whittingham keeping his commitment to Tuttle to not recruit any other QBs. Otherwise, Wilson mostly likely would have been offered by Utah.

As much as I would like to think otherwise, this really will be one of the least compelling bowl games. But, as others have pointed out, we should be grateful just to be playing in a bowl (especially when one realizes that Wyoming with the same record as ours is staying home during the bowl season).

  • CougarForever Holladay, Utah

The loss to Utah was painful (very). One could argue that the outcome may have been different without the Kaufusi and RB injuries but the other side could counter with an argument about missing Huntley and Moss so I view the injury situations as a wash.

Some have made a point about Utah bringing back a lot of players next year but Utah actually loses more impact players than we do. We should be very good next year. Our underclassmen developed very well this year and should be formidable next year. We will have three stellar TEs next year (Moroni will be back and we likely will see 2 TE packages used frequently with Bushman opposite him, especially against teams with some LB limitations). We will have good D- and O-lines. Our youngest O-linemen graded quite high and Wilson has far more upside than Huntley or Shelley. Huntley generally plays like a mediocre G-5 QB who often doesn't read defenses well and has a limited passing repertoire (and Shelley demonstrated his limitations in the championship game against Washington) while Wilson already is playing far beyond a freshman level.

I like our chances against Utah in the first game next year.

Let's hope the coaches learned the same lesson - you can't take your foot off the gas pedal too soon. You can't abandon the game that got you to that lead.

I'm always surprised to see the number of Utah comments on every BYU article. I don't follow the pac 12 boards, nor do I care to do so. BYU will beat Utah again. Just relax. Keep playing hard. Keep practicing. Great university. Go Cougs.

Too Utah: It was freshman BYU players that almost beat you. What a shame. You are supposed to be examples to the freshman at BYU and yet you almost blew it. Shameful

The Utes were just playing with them.

Utah new that they were not going to lose.

No one on the byu side ever really believed that they would win.

I remember a few tweets at half time expressing hope that maybe this was the year...but there were no proclamations.

I would have thought the Northern Illinois defeat would have been the most demoralizing and painful loss by byu this year. They should have expected a beating by Utah and not gotten their hopes up so much while the game was still going on. . .

Atkins - Love your rationale about byu. Well, after all, Christmas is coming and Santa might just stuff byu's oversized stocking with talent. I'm just sayin' there is hope. Now, just put your head down and go to sleep.

Well, BYU fans always seem to find something as a moral victory. So, why not.

One yr. Utah scores 35 in Q1, this yr. Utah scores 35 in just over 1 quarter at the end of the game. Both were wins.

It's been over 9 yrs since BYU beat Utah last. 8 straight and 9 yrs. with the one yr. we didn't play.

Analyze it however you want, every play, every call, every penalty, etc.

BYU didn't let up and Utah doesn't come back if they are not the better team.

This yr. BYU was the classic trap game. Big game the week before v. Colorado to clinch the South Title, and 6 days after the BYU game, was the Conference Championship Game.

Sorry, Utah's players minds weren't on BYU until sometime in the 3rd quarter.

@Atkins Yes, you are correct! If our little blue brothers get a number of more athletic players are a myriad of positions they will have a better chance of beating the UTES in September.

The UTES do return a huge number of starters on both sides of the ball and will, if the last few years are any indicator, have a much better pool of incoming athletes to build around.

Based on what has been happening, there is no longer parity in the programs. Before LaVell there was no parity either.

“You can never count a team out and you can never let off the gas pedal too early,” Romney said. “I think it will definitely help us in future years. We have Utah in the first game next year. Hopefully, it will help us with that.”

I have watched the game several times and BYU is kidding themselves if they think they let of the gas. Utah shut BYU down the last quarter and a half. There are no ans, ifs, or buts about it.

Without question Wilson at QB and an updated Grimes' scheme make BYU's offense more of a threat going into 2019 game. Utes came out flat in first half of 2018 game, but that doesn't diminish the fact that Wilson and BYU's offense made plays and will make some next year.

However, Utes will still have a considerable advantage in overall speed, depth and experience and should win again in 2019. Wilson and the updated scheme just won't be enough.

That could change, however, if, and it's a big IF, Cougars can find themselves a fast, yards after contact RB, a cover busting WR and some additional speed defensively.

We beat Utah for 3/4 of the game, that counts as a morale victory!

Funny how Utah always barely beats the lowly mid-major from down south. Pretty embarrassing for a p5 school.

ZW sounds pretty confident to me.....Looks like he’ll have to learn the hard way that we’re better than byu & never lose to them.....He’ll finish 0-4 against us, period.

As an avid U fan growing up, one would think he’d already have it down pat.

We straight brutalized byu in the 2nd half, to the tune of 35-7, finishing on 28 unanswered points.....We won that game, byu didn’t let up or anything like that.....What part of it is even remotely confusing?

    Go Utes!

A "Painful loss" to Utah? I would think they would be getting used to it by now. . .
