With ballots still to count, both Ben McAdams and Mia Love still see a path to victory
Mia Love was proactive in helping the man return to the states who was held in
Venezuela--including contacting the President for his help. In January he
referred to Haiti and African countries as being "*hole countries," then
later denied saying that. Since Mia is a Haitian American, why would she
"show love" to someone who has made such a remark? And here again he
took another swipe at her by making such a rude public comment. I admire that
she can actually work with him without publicly reacting to his poor taste and
In politics, there are pragmatists, and egotists.Richard Nixon was a
pragmatist. In the days when the Republican party still had moderates, even
liberals, he famously told Republican candidates he would support or condemn
them, whichever they thought would be best for them. Similarly, he would not
mind if they kept their distance from him, if that could enhance their
likelihood of victory. Donald Trump, by comparison, is an egotist: Embrace
me, even if it alienates the swing voters who often make the difference between
winning and losing.
In Queens County, New York, where Trump and I grew up in very different
neighborhoods...his wth large brick homes facing manicured lawns, mine with
semi-attached row houses where grandparents lived in small apartments beneath
their married children with grandchildren...I often noticed a sense of making
everything about me. Taking too much credit when your team won. Accepting
too little blame when they lost. But most of all, injecting yourself
into things where you or your opinion don't really matter. The fact
is that Mia Love's campaign must have realized that a full-on embrace of
Trump would discourage voters who were turned off by his abrasive, insulting,
and often cruel personal style. Ben McAdams, who would never be considered
liberal enough to be elected to the San Francisco city council, offered a
reasonable alternative. So Mia Love, wisely, kept her distance, which offended
Trump. Because in the end, to Donald Trump it is not about Mia Love, or
the people of Utah or of the United States. It is always, and only, about him.
President Trump demands intense loyalty to HIM! Mia did not meet his standard.
Sad! Goodbye Mia
A petty bully, even to members of his own party....
Interestingly enough, Fox on Channel 13 said that there were about 200,000 votes
that have not yet been take care of Utah and Salt Lake Counties Clerks. And
they said that about 100,000 of the votes that have yet to be opened in Utah
County would be a 3 to 1 vote with Love winning that and in Salt Lake County it
would be 1 to 1. They also said it would be 2 weeks before it would be
finalized. This would also be Prop 2 and others. And this also
brings in the Holladay vote on the old Cottonwood Mall development. The Utah
Supreme Court has yet to had down their opinion which will be the final on this
development. So this time around there were a lot more citizens
voting; something that hasn't happened for quite a few years. It is interesting, apparently we do not have final winners yet.
Mia lost because of her financial misdeeds and her affiliation with a party that
has lost its moral compass. Utah once a legislature and US representatives
dominated by white, male and Mormon, Utah is becoming a true reflection of
itself as multi-cultural. We are a state of many colors, races, sexual
orientations and religions including those of us with no religion. This thrusts
Utah onto the world stage as a true reflection of diversity!
Many people commenting are missing what actually happened. Trump helped
Mia at her request to free an American prisoner from Utah being held in
Venezuela for two years. He then offers to help her with a campaign rally
in SLC. She not only says no but continues to distance herself from him by
continuing to call him out on a number of issues. Looking at how close
this race still is two days after election day, She would have certainly won had
she allowed Trump to hold a rally for her in SLC. He flew to the whistle
stop town of Elko for a rally a week before election day. Elko !Mia
should have accepted Trumps offer of campaign help.
DNews should not have gotten political and tried to sway votes away from Love.
She was by far a better candidate and hopefully will pull out a last
minute win.Sad to see Trump would not have helped an American
hostage unless he thought he was going to get some political favor from Love,
but that just shows how awesome Mia really is.
Trump is right. Mia Love’s District is R+13. Her betrayal of her original
campaign promises and her most recent full throated support of open borders
suppressed her base and lost her election. Why would conservatives vote for
Mia likely lost. That doesn't stop Trump from trashing anyone who he feels
didn't sufficiently bow down to him despite Mia supporting nearly all of
his legislative agenda notwithstanding a few "hey don't say mean things
about third-world countries" from Mia. It's sad to see all
the mental gymnastics some conservatives and evangelicals use to justify
supporting a man so utterly unfit for this office.
Mia lost. Get over it.
@Red Smith: "Why Republicans bash President Trump makes no sense...Why
is that?"The "elite political class" of both parties
consider politics to be a game that only they are allowed to play, and play by
their own rules. Much of the "fighting" is just a show, like
professional wrestling. Trump comes along with a genuine desire to defend
America and America's principles. He upsets the political elites of both
parties. Trump isn't a professional politician. He is a wheeler-dealer,
leader, businessman. So Trump makes gaffs, says un-PC things, and generally
sidesteps the power that the political class believe they deserve. Take
Mitt Romney for example: Mitt is quite obviously the quintessential example of
the "elite political class". No wonder that Mitt was one of
Trump's harshest critics before Trump was elected.
Those determined to hate Trump see this as another episode of "making it
about Trump". Unbiased observers can simply see that "Trump
continues to speak the truth without regard for how his opponents will twist
Strange comments from a President.
@impartial7-Draper,UtahYour math is correct but you logic is wrong.
Anytime there are more candidates it will draw away votes. McMullin is a
libertarian and did fairly well in Utah pulling away more conservative votes.
Had there been only 2 in the general election trump would have easily gained the
most votes.Cruz won in the primaries but this wasn’t an option
in the general election.
I agree with trumps position but not how he said it? A visit from trump would
have resulted in higher voter turn out and negated some of higher liberal votes
that were influenced by the marijuana prop. It would have fired up
the liberals as well but many conservatives consider her weak in the
conservative agenda and didn’t get out to vote
How ungracious, how tacky, how petty, well just about any perjorative adjective
you might conjure, can this president be to blame Mia Love's loss of office
on the fact that she showed him no "love"?Really America,
this is the person who was elected to represent us all?
Trump's comment was justified. Mia Love has been a virulent anti-Trump from
the beginning and has consistently stood in opposition to principles outlined in
the Republican Party Platform and U.S. Constitution relating to immigration.
Democrats and the corrupt Republican Establishment Wing might like that but Mia
Love is supposed to be a Republican who cares about her oath of office.
Utahns voted for President Trump Carte Blanche know his behavior, attitude
toward women and people except for himself. He has torn our nation
apart and today he showed his true nature in his treatment of reporters and
journalists.President Trump picked on the CNN reporter knowing CNN
was his adversary. Trump wanted to have this incident become the headline and
not his firing of Attorney General Sessions.
@ Impartial 7 I think your blatantly Fales or your math is your numbers are
right on the 2016 vote but if you do the math Trump got 45% , Clinton 27% and
McMullin 21% sorry you can do bettor !!!
Dear Leader feels he only has to be “President” for the 63 million
who voted for him. At best, The Nationalist feels those that didn’t vote
for him are inconsequential and at worst, he feels they are his enemies. That is who won in 2016. You’re welcome, America.
The headline says it exactly like it is...Mia has not lost yet...The reality show host has already cut her loose.Mia's
total devotion to the reality show host was basically forgotten by him.
Trump imagines every thing that happens on the planet earth revolves around him.
Hackensack -“Let's be honest here; Mr. McAdams has
benefitted a great deal from the young, idealist, liberal voters who decided to
march to the polls mostly to support recreational, errrr, medicinal
marijuana”.Yes. Let’s do be honest comrade. How out of
touch, misinformed and desperate. Liberal voters, including yours truly support
Mr. McAdams due to a plethora of topics he is absolutely correct on. Including
many more besides, “errr”, now legal medical marijuana. Do yourself
a favor and investigate factual information prior to posting. You are
because Mia Love wasn't loyal enough, Republicans
voted in a Democrat."Off year elections are about turnout.
Turning people off, means they won't turn out to vote for you. It's
kind of like if you go around bad mouthing your neighbors, when you need a hand
they might be too busy. Utahans understand that Trump has
weaknesses. But they elected him for his strengths, not his weaknesses. If your
baby has mole on her nose, you might expect that someone who hates you to point
it out. But having friends do it becomes intolerable. Especially if they are
doing it alongside the haters. You end up distancing yourself from them. Everyone knows what Trumps warts are. But now, his strengths have our
economy booming as well as many other positives for America. Seeing Mia Love
join the chorus of haters, turned off her supporters. They didn’t vote for
McAdams, they just didn't vote for either.
trump's maniacal madness is on full display today. And this is
only the beginning.America is in far worse trouble now than we ever
imagined we could be.
Once again everything is all about donald trump. An ego in a ill fitting suit.
@hackensack - I think you hit the nail squarely on the head. Prop 2 definitely
I am not a fan of the two candidates but this POTUS seems to can't help
himself, thinking that he is the savior of American politics. It is about
"me" and "I" with him. Remember that your desires and goals for
the future can't materialize if you distant yourself from him or even think
negtively of him. LOL!
You have to love Trumps circular logic...... because Mia Love wasn't loyal
enough, Republicans voted in a Democrat. Does no one else see just how
illogical that logic is..... because someone wasn't "conservative"
enough, they voted in a liberal. This the logic of the man in the
No matter how you put it Mia did distance her campaign from Trump. And whether
it would have help or not we will never know, because it wasn't tried.
Let's be honest here; Mr. McAdams has benefitted a great deal from the
young, idealist, liberal voters who decided to march to the polls mostly to
support recreational, errrr, medicinal marijuana.
LivinLarge - Bountiful, UTNov. 7, 2018 1:52 p.m.“Sorry Utah,
as much as we pretend to be growing liberal and sophisticated like other Metro
areas across the country...we remain an insignificant whistle-stop community
along the Wasatch front. We are fly-over country with very little
acknowledgement or respect”.Couldn’t state this any
better myself! Minus the outdoor activities of course. It is a must to live in
SLC metro or Summit County if you are residing in Utah!
Salt Lake County has only a few enclaves that are actually livable and fun, good
folks.....the aves, east side inner city above 9th east, Sugarhouse, parts of
way east Milcreek/Olympus Cove area and a pocket or two in Holladay, maybe east
Sandy too.........that is it! Nothing in Draper below 5th east or west of I-15
at all............do y'all think West'South Jordan is fun, or Glendale
Love stood behind him at a recent press conference...her ties to Trump were one
of the things that led me to write in a different candidate
Sorry Utah, as much as we pretend to be growing liberal and sophisticated like
other Metro areas across the country...we remain an insignificant whistle-stop
community along the Wasatch front. We are fly-over country with very little

I don't agree with how you portrayed what President Trump said. He meant
that Mia was after him tenaciously when trying to get the prisoner from
Valenzuela released and showed him no love while after the President to get this
done. No, she has not lost yet!
Trump never takes the blame for anything. Republican Matt Rosendale had Trump
campaign for him in Montana. Trump visited 3 time in 6 weeks. Costing taxpayers
10's of millions. Rosedale still lost to Jon Tester. Now, according to
Trump, did he lose because he didn't love Trump enough or because he loved
him too much?
Yeah, I know why I moved from creepy Utah decades ago........Mia Love is a prime
example why, as is Willard Romney, who has disgraced my Romney family name. I
found the pollution, taxes, and favoritism to the LDS Corporation not tolerable.
I'm happy now......I left!
@Slcut - Salt Lake City, UTNov. 7, 2018 12:46 p.m.A majority of the
voters in Utah elected President Trump. It appears Trump agrees with most of the
voters Mia has no love for the people of Utah. Hopefully she will be finished
representing Utah"That's blatantly false. The majority of
Utahn's voted for someone other than Trump. This isn't FOX News. 515,000 Utahn's voted for Trump.564,000 Utahn's voted for
Clinton and McMullin.
Sounds like a win-win.
A few months ago, didn't he refer to Haiti, where Mia Love's parents
were born, as a sh[...]hole country"? And now he whines that she gave him no
A majority of the voters in Utah elected President Trump. It appears Trump

Best thing that could have happened for Mia. Trump's snarky comment
removed her from complicity in this momentary insanity in the Republican party.
Trump will be gone in two years and Mia's career is only helped by the
distance he put between them.
Mia is the only Congress person in Utah with the courage to call out the
Fuehrer. She didn’t earn his love because she is a woman and is black.
Two traits he has little use for.
What was Mia Love thinking? Why vote for a Republican who will not support your
values? President Trump won Utah by nearly 20 points in 2016! Didn't she
Ah, our ever-gracious President, always thinking of what's best for our
country instead of focusing only on himself.
the swamp creature himself criticizing mia love for no love is just too sad!
So much for uniting the country. Expect at least 2 more years of childish,
boorish behavior unless Muellar drops a bomb.
She is invisible to her constituents. She represents her party only.Worthless, and without merit. How very perfectly delicious that a
democrat took her out.
Bloodhound -said: "Trump is the leader of our party (Republican). Love
should not have openly criticized him."The purity required of
the GOP is astounding, 95% not enough. She has a thought independent of
the GOP Borg, and she should keep that to herself, no body can criticize...
except for the Dear Leader Donald.Authoritarian Fans are ready to
serve you Donald, without question, and with religious fervor.
President Trump was exactly right. Mia lost because she is "old school
GOP" and anti-Trump. The old GOP party is gone. It is now the party of
Trump. Mia wasn't on board and now she's out.
Trump is simply doing what he does best. Taking credit for what goes right, and
absolving himself of what goes wrong. The republicans who won did do because of
hem, and the ones who lost lost on their own.I noticed he left out
John Tester in Montana. Trump went to Montana (a state Trump won by a
large margin) multiple times to campaign for Tester's opponent, and Tester
Mia knew full well that getting too cozy with Trump was not going to play well
with the 4th district voters this cycle. I suspect that the results have a lot
to do with Trump backlash in spite of anything Mia could have done in any case.
Sorry, trump. You are not king--- you are--for some reason--president.This is not a popularity contest... likethe race for Senior Class
president..you have no idea how to unite...how to be POTUS.
There's pretty decent odds she'll still win. At least if she does
I'll have this rude remark from Trump to laugh about when it flips around
so it won't be a total loss.
It's all about Trump, and always will be.
He's wrong. She gave him plenty of love. He just can't see it as love
unless it's openly fawning and asking to be his friend. Mia's love
came in the same subtle ways that so many in the GOP display their love for
Donald and his policies.
Mia, you did fine as a Rep for Utah.Whatever your next steps, good luck in
Trump has a decades-long record of expressing disdain for black people,
particularly women. Mia Love was naive to believe his bigotry would not
eventually extend to her.
America's Dictator has spoken "Mia ain't got no love".......
"She gave me no love..." If it turns out Mia loses this election she
should wear that quote like a badge of honor."She should have
taken cues from the other members of the Congressional delegation"...and
kissed Trumps ring on a daily basis.
"But Mia Love gave me no love," he [Trump] said. "She lost. Too bad.
Sorry about that Mia."____________________Sour grapes seem to be
a staple of Trump's diet.
@Red Smith - American Fork, UTNov. 7, 2018 10:46 a.m.Why Republicans
bash President Trump makes no sense.Romney never bashed Obama like he
bashed Trump. Why is that?"Maybe because Obama wasn't
an adulterous, lying, scamming megalomaniac that put himself above our Country.
Sorry, but Mia lost this for herself. No, it wasn't about Trump, but it
was about her wishy-washy stances and going to DC and becoming someone different
(or, possibly, just showing her true colors). She didn't always act in
UT's best interest and her immigration rhetoric was not in line with the
people she represented.
Trump is the leader of our party (Republican). Love should not have openly
criticized him. She also signed on to rewarding illegal immigrants (DACA). These
actions will likely cost her the election.
I respect Mia Love more because she called Trump out when he was wrong. I have
very little respect for Republicans that criticize Democrats but then cover for
Trump when he acts and speaks poorly. There is too much party loyalty over
loyalty and fidelity to values and our country. Trump is a good politician, but
a poor leader. He is not honest. He has lived a life that conflicts with Utah
values--how can Utahn's support Trump and keep a straight face?Good leadership if more than winning. It is winning the right way. The ends
do not justify the means. How we behave, how we live, and how we treat others
is often most important in life. I have respect for Mia Love. I am
confident that if she ran for office anywhere else in the state, other than Salt
Lake County, she would win. She represented an area that voted for
Mattheson--clearly not a strong Republican district. So Trump shouldn't
criticize Love. Love is a better person by far than Donald Trump.
Typical. He throws people under the bus that aren't inclined to worship him
and walk in lockstep with him. She votes with him at least 95% of the time. He
I like Mia Love as a person but she let herself be used by the liberal media as
a foil against Trump. I had great hope for her. But alas she fell
prey to the swamp creatures. She should have taken cues from the other members
of the Congressional delegation.
Trump makes every issue about Trump. If something good happens, it's
because of him. If something bad happens, he had nothing to do with it or barely
knows those that lost or got arrested. Mia voted for his policies 97% of the
time- but, that's "not enough love". Look up "narcissist"
in the dictionary-you'll see Trump's picture.
Why Republicans bash President Trump makes no sense.Romney never
bashed Obama like he bashed Trump. Why is that?
Trump can make any conversation a little creepy.
