Make a change at QB. He doesn't know how to look off his receivers and he can't put touch on some of his passes. He exposed Covey to some huge hits by not knowing how to look off his receivers. Make a change before Covey gets seriously hurt.

    london_josh,
I'm very aware of what's going on, thank you. Colorado's only decent win was against Nebraska, but even that wasn't that great of a win since they lost to Troy this last weekend. I would dare to say that Utah's win over NIU was a better win as NIU is supposed to win the MAC.

And I actually watched the BYU Arizona game. BYU played decent, but Arizona played TERRIBLE defense and Tate has an obvious lower leg injury that they were trying to hide, but that has seriously altered their offensive gameplan which hasn't worked. Tate can't throw all game, especially not deep balls every other play. Besides, Arizona got hammered by Houston the next week. And that might be an understatement because I watched a lot of that game also.

And if you want to hype up Cal to make that loss sting a little less, go ahead I guess. They narrowly beat a sad NC team(NC had the last possession that could have tied the game and got pretty deep in Cal territory before Cal could stop them. Watched parts of that game too.) and they beat Idaho St, but by the end of conference play, they will probably be 5-7 and that won't be considered a "quality loss."

We'll see how that prediction pans out lol

    JD,

go look up the scores of what's actually happened and happening on ESPN and maybe you can formulate an opinion based on reality or results.

just so you know, here is what's actually going on right now:

in the PAC South the best team right now, but a pretty good margin in terms of looks and record and performance, is Colorado, all other teams have at least one loss and Utah and USC have conference losses. Arizona will certainly struggle, however BYU didn't barely beat them as you suggested, look at the game instead of guess.

In the North only 2 teams have losses, and Washington's loss was a very respectable loss to Auburn. Cal is perfect so far and has played a P5 and a P5 equivalent.

As for BYU and Washington, let me make a prediction - BYU will lose the game but will score more than one offensive touchdown during the game and BYU will make it into a game.

It's actually been a really exciting season so far, maybe you should try get out of our heads and try and watch some of these games.

It's really funny to see all these coug fans pounding their chests about how bad the Pac supposedly is and how Utah lost and byu won.. blah blah blah.. didn't you guys just lose to Cal, a perennial bottom dweller in the Pac 12, and you barely beat a sad Arizona team? Also, remember that you guys still have to play Washington too, so these comments will probably come back to bite you after you lose to them. Washington won't overlook you like Wisconsin did, and it could get ugly

    Uteology,

In your reply to somebody saying that you are spinning facts and numbers - you use BYU's 2017 numbers to Utah's 2018 numbers.

The reality is that everybody who reads your frequent posts knows that you do that.

You can be passionate about your team - that's totally acceptable. I recognize that often I'm wearing blue goggles looking at things, and I complain about officials sometimes and like stats to promote my team - so I'm not calling you out on it but rather your inability to have self-recognition and the hilarious irony that you showed using past BYU numbers in your rebuttal.

2017 Utah was clearly better than BYU on many levels. This is 2018, this article isn't about BYU, and while people love to compare the games BYU and Utah have played have been very different thus far. We can't equate Weber to Arizona or NIU to Cal nor Wiscy to Washington. Both teams are 2-1, and even when BYU plays common opponents it's still not comparable until BYU plays Utah at the end of November - a game Utah has won 7 straight years now which makes Utah the better program in the head to head. As a BYU fan I hope that changes this year - but arguing about it today is pointless.

Holy cow, everybody needs to chill out. An unranked Utah team competes most of the game with a Top 10 Washington team, has some key mistakes and turnovers and everybody is calling the whole season a bust and to fire everybody? CHILL OUT. Unless you're Alabama, every team this year will play and lose some games because they didn't execute well or had a couple turnovers, it's just football. I'm appalled by all the "Utah fans" turning on this team and coaching staff when the Pac-12 South is very much so still in reach. Ya'll are acting like Washington isn't a good team lol. I hope you all have a come to Jesus moment and realize that the Utes aren't going to be 12-0 every year. Was Saturday night frustrating? Absolutely. In fact, the most frustrating part is that we had so many chances but fumbled the ball or had a costly hold, etc. in key situations. These are 18-24 year old kids busting their butt. Doesn't mean they won't fumble or make a mistake every now an again. Or even just get beat by a better, top 10 team. Get over yourselves. The Utes will be just fine and I still see them competing for the Pac-12 South.

I am looking for a place to add a comment about the strength and power of the PAC-12 conference. Perhaps this is that place?

USC lost to Texas; UCLA lost to Fresno State; Oregon State lost to Nevada; Arizona State lost to San Diego State; Washington defeated Utah; Stanford defeated UC Davis; Cal beat Idaho State; Arizona beat Southern Utah, Colorado beat New Hampshire. Washington State beat Eastern Washington, and Oregon beat San Jose State.

It appears to me that Washington was the only PAC-12 university that played an institution of comparable quality, although Texas may be recovering. Am I missing something or did last season's bowl results in which Utah was the only winner indicate that the PAC-12 just might be a little overrated? Perhaps Utah does have the opportunity to run the table against the southern division? Best of Luck, Utah!

  • london_josh Lincoln, CA

Covey played lights out. Can't say enough good things about him, his toughness was remarkable even when the QB hung him out to take brutal hits over and over again.

Somebody needs to figure out what's wrong with the coaching staff. Why is there some aversion to an offensive focus?

11 OCs and nothing changes, but nothing will change with the HC - so what's the issue?

Why can the defense rotate in strong players like it's Alabama and stay strong all day long while the offense has 3 stars, 1 of which has bad ankles and I can't imagine that Covey isn't seriously banged up after that game.

Chase Hansen is amazing - brilliant to place him on defense - but Utah's offense needs help and always does, so why didn't he stay on offense?

Utah has unlimited depth on defense and offense has a QB, WR and RB - 2 of 3 need to rest up from injury and the QB might need to be changed.

Hope they find their groove, the PAC S is wide open this year, but the things that need to be fixed at Utah go very very deep and might be hard to change.

But there is a team in Utah that is a winning, that wins big games and soon very soon, will add one more lose to the Ute ledger... Yep you guessed it... BYU. The end of the era is coming. The seven year itch and a loss for Utah is about to happen. You say in my dreams... I say yes in my dreams... I've been dreaming about this for seven years now and its about to happen for Utah and the start of the new era: BYU 1 win, Utah 1 loss.

I love Britain Covey. He is the toughest dude I've seen in a very long time. He would never say it out loud because he's such a great kid, but how could he not be upset with Huntley right now. I've never seen a QB throw a receiver into coverage and leave him hanging out to dry more than Huntley did. Brian Griese perfectly described the issues with Huntley...and if he sees it, then P5 DCs will see it as well.

I said from day one Tuttle will finish this year out for Utah. After what I saw last night, I hope for U fans' sake, and Covey's sake, that I'm right. Utah has gone as far as they will go with Huntley...the guy is just not a good passer, and doesn't seem to know the difference between man and zone coverage, or whether its 2 or 3 deep zone. Time to look at options, even if it means growing pains with a talented freshman.

This loss was clearly the fault of the refs. On Tonga's fumble, if you isolate the sound, you can clearly here the line judge from the opposite sideline yell "BOO!" a split-second before he bounces the ball off his hip. This was clearly a Pac-12 conspiracy to prop up the feeble hopes of an appearance in the CFP!

But on a serious note, it's time to acknowledge that winning the Sugar Bowl was the worst thing that has happened to the Utah program. Ten years later it's mired in perpetual mediocrity with an overpaid and overrated coach who has a tendency to make awful in-game decisions and not have his team prepared for big games (too many examples to list them all, but let's start with the '11 game vs Colorado). Hundreds of thousands of Utah alumni buried in student loan debt, but this clown makes $3+ million a year to put a losing product on the field, just because his team won the Sugar Bowl a decade ago. Enjoy more years of the same thing until you get smart and move on to a real coach.

I'm a Cougar fan, but I don't think most of you Ute fans are keeping perspective on what just happened last night. Utah's defense is still ferocious. Dropped passes aren't the fault of the OC or HC; neither are penalties. The most serious penalties called by the refs were bad calls for targeting, and I thought they were game changers. No coach is to blame for the DT running alone toward the end zone with an intercepted pass who then fumbles the ball out of bounds without being touched. You're going to win the Pac-12 South. Your only weakness, as far as I can see, is that you lack the deep threats and big physical receivers to get open against defenses like Washington's. Covey looks to have a pinched nerve/neck injury that manifests as very painful shoulder pain; and he needs to get the ball in space only so he can protect himself better. Otherwise he's going to get hurt badly (herniated cervical disk, if that hasn't already happened). But Washington's defense is the best you'll face this year, and your defense is as good as theirs. If you play Washington again, 50% chance you'll beat them.

    Ute fans,

Don't worry. You will get another shot at Washington in the PAC 12 championship game. The PAC 12 south is by far the weakest division of any P5 conference.

    Arizona beats an FCS team.
Arizona St. loses to a Mt. West team.
    Colorado beats an FCS team.
UCLA gets blown out by a Mt. West team.
USC gets blown out by a bad Big 12 team.

It's a good thing Colorado and Arizona didn't play Mt. West teams or the division might have went 0-6 for the day.

And Utah looked the best against the best competition. Washington is a really good team and the Utes had their chances. I don't see Utah losing another game until the PAC 12 championship game. Their toughest remaining game is BYU but I still give the edge to the Utes in that game.

And as a side note from a BYU fan, Covey is the toughest player pound for pound in college football and I wish he was on my team.

Clearly meant to be sarcastic - but I think Utah will be in the game against all teams but one in the PAC-S. Best defense by a mile, and the other offenses are soft.

Except Colorado. Call me crazy, but I think Utah gets 2nd or 3rd place and Colorado wins. They are the only team to consistently put up a lot of points on the board. Utah's probably capable of 13 points in most games, unlikely to go beyond 20 - but they can hold opponents to half the regular tally. That's not gonna cut it against Colorado putting up 45 in most games.

The season will be like drunks fighting, anything can happen - but somehow Utah needs to keep covey and moss healthy - easier said than done!

I am a ute fan excepting one game of the year. The ites will be back next week. This is a very athletic and talented group. They very rarely have two games like this in a row. They will rebound and be stronger. Washington is a great team that forces other teams to make mistakes. Let's come back next week Utes.

Not being there hard to comment, but I thought I was seeing a new kind of pass defense. Not only let the receiver catch the ball, but invite him to do so. Then lunge a large body into the upper torso. Follow this with another large body flying into the legs. Be ready to scope up the fumbled ball, and off to the races. Math previously said that if one receiver is double teamed there should be someone else open. Since Covey is like fly paper, isn't it possible to throw to someone else? I do not understand the "targeting rule" but I thought it was to protect the cranial region from being rung too hard. Has Covey had an MRI since last night?

Between last year's football season & this one just begun, the common thread for theUtes is that the offense stinks.

I was truly hoping that Troy Taylor's offensive game would change the Utes much for the better. So far, I see little evidence of that working.

I'd like Troy Taylor to succeed at Utah. But if he can, when will it happen?

Whether it's because he's just the offensive coordinator, or he's a tier above where he can make his system work, or something else, I don't know. But I don't see it working.

Since Kyle Whittingham has been the head football coach at Utah, he has had difficulty in finding an offensive coordinator who can consistently do the job. Whether it's because of Whit, or because of the offensive coordinators he's had, it's hard for me to tell. But sadly, the one offenive coordinator I hoped would make the offense work right, doesn't seem to be.

Whether Huntley passed the ball too hard,, or the wide receivers haven't learned how to catch & hold onto a ball, they dropped passes far too often last night to win.

And why doesn't Huntley give the ball to Zack Moss more? He was averaging over 5 yds gained/run last night!

So far, Troy Taylor isn't doing it.

Washington looked rather soft and beatable against an extremely weak and scared ute team. Pac is looking like a glorified G6 team, but we kinda knew that before last year. Nothing new here, but if you want to see what it's like to beat one of the best teams in the country you just need to look a little farther South.

I love my Utes. I love the fact that they are so consistent. They have mastered the "game plan" of success for losing in the PAC-12.
    1)Too many Turnovers
    2)Questionable play calling
    3)Stupid penalties at key moments
    4)Dropped passes
    5)Poor QB play/decision making
It's getting old hearing the same excesses because it's still the same things that happen each game. Regardless, I am a UTAH man and I will cheer for this team through good and bad. It would be nice, however, if we could throw away the "game plan" for once and win the division. We have the talent, just not the focus.

"Yes. Fire Troy Taylor. Moss averages 5.2 yards per carry and gets only 13 carries. FIVE in the second half!! Taylor must go. Or Whit if he can’t get it fixed."

Nobody can fix a team where the heart and soul goes to the defense.

Moss has 2 bad ankles from that game.

Utah has no depth in offense? I know the" pac team recruiting and next man up " bravado is kind of fun to say, but Utah has 3 individuals who can move a ball and they all got slaughtered last night, 2 of which will likely be impacted for the games to come. That's because it goes to moss, or covey, or Huntley every play.

The team dynamic needs to change before anything improves.

I don't get it. Troy Taylor didn't throw the interception, fumble twice, or miss open receivers in the red zone. Neither did any of the previous fired offensive coordinators. Yet we scream fire him, them.

Kyle always has and will continue to get good athletes then put them all on defense.

I still think Utah wins the South because it isn't P5 quality at all. Not one team is better than an average non P5 team.

Having stayed up until the wee hours this morning watching the game. I must respectfully disagree with you. The problem wasn't Coach Taylor or his play calling. I put the blame squarely on the players shoulders! Total lack of discipline and execution! I think Washington will lose at least two more games. The good news for the Utes they still look like the best team or maybe second best in the South division. I've already commented on this game. An overaggressive Ute team running up against a disciplined Husky offense and defense. I don't watch the Utes other than the Washington and BYU games, but I suspect they'll be looking for a new OC again. This was an ugly game. I don't think the spearing was intentional, but it seemed like the Utes were frantic and made mistakes. The Husky defense looked tough, but the Washington offense was a two-man show. Of course, a team with Gaskin is going to focus on him.

Utah started all three fourth quarter drives inside the Washington 35 yard line, but went 0-of-3 on fourth down on each drive. The offense is absolutely horrendous.

On the only scoring drive, 7 carries by the RBs for 40 of the 80 yards (5.7 per carry), Moss had 6 carries for 37. The rest of the game RBs had only 8 carries for 42 yards (5.2 per carry).

Kyle Whittingham has run his course in the PAC 12. His offense is terrible and for some reason he can't seem to find an OC that is worth a darn. Part of coaching is hiring coaches that are going to be successful. So far, coach Whit is failing. I am not sure why Coach Whit gets a pass while other coaches (especially in power 5 conferences) get fired for much less. Whit is the problem.

    "FIRE TROY TAYLOR"

    Is that the problem?

I know this woman who's just gone through her 5th divorce and she's in her late 30's - at some point you stop blaming the men.

It's Troy Taylor's beloved boss who is never going to be fired - he's the problem and he's also the institution and the wisdom behind the defense and special teams. so you fire him, and you lose what's strong at Utah.

No doubt your request will come to fruition, it might be an NCAA record for Whit on letting go so many OCs - each one, of course, was the problem despite that the problem remained when they left.

i'm sure the guy after TT will get the offense on track, like all of the previous ones have.

I'm not saying this to take jabs at Utah football, it's a serious problem and what makes it so horrible is that fans (including myself) shutter at the thought of letting Whit go - it's a horrible option - but clearly he is the problem.
