I like that kalani goes for it on 4th, but he does it way too much. The loss was by 3 points, easy solution for a good kicker.
If your kicker is putting a lot of field goal points on the board, your offense
isn't scoring touchdowns. I want to see Skyler kick a lot of extra points.
I originally predicted that BYU would go 7-5, among them being wins against:
Hawaii, USU, and NIU. Having seen the way these "give me" teams are
playing in comparison to BYU, I now anticipate that the cougars will finish the
season 4-8, with the remaining w's being: Mcneese, Umass, and NMSU. Will always love cougar football.
To the BYU play callers (especially Kalani): Please review any and all of
LaVell's wins, losses, and especially close wins over 29 years...you will
find that he took the points in virtually every instance. Maybe he knew
something....???...Going for it on 4th and five, especially
repeatedly, when you have a quality kicking option is just like taking points
off the board. Critical, possibly incompetent mistake.
If they have confidence in his field goal game they forgot about it last
weekend, but sweet redemption when they defeat the Badgers by six probably from
They had better attempt the kick on first down. With Mangum at QB there is no
guarantee that there will be a fourth down...
I have to disagree with the coaches on this one. Being aggressive is only fun
if you win. Those two potential scores would have made all of the difference
last week, even if only one of those were made. Successful teams seem to
consistently go for the field goal in those situations. In the Lavell era, going
for it on 4th and short was saved for late game situations where it was needed.
Take the more secure points.
So why didn't they put him to work in the California game??? Twice he could
have had a chance to put points on the board, which if he had made them (like
they say he is good at) he could have won the game for BYU. Instead they messed
up big time and ended up with no points. Makes one wonder about the coaching???
Better get it right this week... Remember Detmer... I'm not sure they will
give this bunch of guys two years leeway... Because none of these guys are a BYU
legend. What would get the monkey off their backs is if they by some chance won
the game this week with Wisconsin. "What" (you say) "You am asking
for a miracle". Yes I am. And in response to any criticisms I'd
say... If they were so inept in the loss with California, maybe they can swing
the other way and pull off a miracle against Wisconsin. One can only hope for
With the way the offense is playing, we should be kicking the field goal on
first down...if he is in range. Seriously though, not capitalizing on that
fumbled punt really cost us in the Cal game.
That is only useful if the cougars can get past the 50 yard line.
The phrase “we want to be aggressive” ...... needs to be replaced
with “we want to be smart”!When your team is clearly in
field goal range ..... and BYU was with Southam .... you kick the field goal.
But that mistake isn’t as big of a mistake as selecting Mangum as the best
QB on the team. I believe there are 3 and maybe 4 QBs on the BYU roster who
are better in game decision makers and more accurate throwers than Tanner is
when the pressure is on
If only we had recovered that onside kick.
Going for a 50+ field goal early in the game is being aggressive. If you miss
the other team has a great spot for their possession. Our lack of
going for two long, makeable, field goals by Skyler, ultimately cost BYU the
game. Be aggressive with Skyler and it will build confidence in the team of
being able to score anytime they reach the 35 yard line. We saw it a lot at
Wasatch, no different at BYU.How long has it been to have this
threat of scoring? BYU needs points on the board so the other team does the
chasing instead of the other way around. Check out that successful
team up north. They have fantastic special teams/kickers and seem to win the
close ones.Go Cougars!
