From my perspective, the BYU Defense needs to mix in more blitz packages. They have not been getting enough pressure on opposing quarterbacks with 4 down linemen, especially at Cal. When an opposing Power 5 team has that much time, it is only a matter of time before the Quarterback carves up the D and one of those athletic receivers breaks one for big scores.

Agree with pipes. Two blown coverages by the secondary for td's and no pressure on the qb. No defensive or offensive adjustments that I could see in the 2nd half. Running Hoge twice up the middle was very questionable.

No the defense DID NOT play well. Too many 3rd down conversions, and one game winning long drive. They don't have enough 3 and outs. Good defenses can trade 3 and outs all game long. We don't do that. Sitake needs to go!

The defense played well against a Cal team that will beat some people. Their offense was sparked by the running QB who caught BYU by surprise. He's pretty good and made some plays.

The issue is not the defense, it was the quarterback. I greatly admire Mangum as a man and a sportsman, but he looked immobile (because of the injuries of last year?). He has a cannon but is not really consistent and is slow compared to the rushers. I think it is time to give the Freshman a shot. After all, Cal's freshman is the one who beat BYU.

As for the team, BYU is tough. Their defense is very stout. I re-watched the game and the difference was that BYU's offense was not prepared for the pressure from Cal, and Tanner simply cannot move well. BYU's defense played well enough to win, but the kid QB was a surprise.

BYU could have won the game if they could only move the ball consistently. This is on Tanner, I think. Let's try Zach at Wisconsin. What do we have to lose?

Sure wanted the Cougs to win, however, the defense didn't exactly keep the team in the game. They were on the field for all but 11 plays in the third quarter.

Not a single sack! Did they even blitz? It was like the only defensive play call was “ Base cover 2”. Unless they learn to pressure a QB, it will be a long and painful season!
