People choose the Cougars over the Utes simply because the Cougars aren't the Utes.

    No other reason necessary.

I am a U of U alum and Ute fans are the most obnoxious, insecure fan base I have ever seen.

It has nothing to do with a recruiting gap or wins or losses.

  • Minnesota Ute Bloomington, MN

As long as the U continues to improve their recruiting and dominates the head-to-head series the gap will only widen. The Utes have continually, other than the Edwards years, dominated the series over the years so it's easy to see who has the best program in the state. In almost 100 years the series has been played the Cougars have won only 12 times outside of the Edwards years. Why on earth would anyone choose the cougars over the Utes?

As well as to tell us that “times are changing” and “we’ll beat U THIS year” based off a win vs a PAC 12 team/s that’ll probably barely make a bowl, if that.

    ------------

    LOL great question.

But after today's result, I dont see Arizona making a bowl game. They will prob finish last in the South.

The Utes were able to increase their fan base in the early 2000's by 1) increasing their facilities thanks to the 2002 Olympics. 2) Selling out to the BCS College Football monopoly now called the Power 5 by jumping on their big money ship (Pac12 expansion). and 3) Stealing as many coaches and recruits from BYU. (Whitinghams, Covey's, et all) Fortunately many are coming back (Sitake, Kaufusi, etc.) The thing BYU fans can always count on is they will always have the bigger national, worldwide fan base, and Utah will never win the Pac 12 in Football.

    -----

We didn't steal Covey, you weren't smart enough to offer him a scholarship.

We didn't steal Whittingham, he "rejected" you TWICE just like the PAC-10.

BYU sold out its basketball and other programs for lesse leagues by jumping on ESPN "big money ship" for football.

The thing BYUs "world wide" fans can count on is a annual loss to THE University of Utah.

I have never been envious of anything the Utah Utes have done in fact their fans are by far the most annoying in the country. If anything they have way underachieved the last 15 years with the number of NFL players they have put in the league you would think they would have more to show for it than a string of wins against BYU. Championships are what measure winners something I don't see happening until they get some an NFL caliber Quarterback something they haven't been able to get since Mitchell. And if you really don't want to lose those fans one thing you can learn from the "Y" is don't schedule Weber St. and Idaho St., patsies really do make you look week even if you do end up blowing them out.

Utah was the only undefeated team in 2008, so under the same criteria Utah would have bee "awarded" the NC.

BYUs NC was not unanimous, and Utah was given the no. 1 position in several polls,. Hence on NCAA records they are shown as having a no. 1 finish.

I don't think anyone with half a brain would put a 6-5 Michigan team in the same class as a ,10-1 Alabama team.

This is funny reading about what ute partisans give for the reasons. For one thing, you'd hardly get a stir out of anyone except the particular school itself by claiming a decade later that you had a NC because ONE voting segment thought you were the best team in the country but no one else bothered to vote that way. It would be hilarious to see how u fans would react if it were BYU and not them; they can't accept the consensus 1984 NC that was given to the only undefeated team in the country-the ONLY one. So there's that.

They claim they have a better stadium. Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-Arizona's stadium seats more than the u. Maybe if they said they had the dinkiest stadium that would be believable, but USU and WSU would call them out on that.

And somehow in all their mighty education from a research institution they keep referring to some school named BYU-P. There is no such place and never has been.

Plus, they don't exaggerate or embellish, do they? Really, "a million times better"? Alabama isn't a million times better than Idaho State or Wyoming. Nice try; get real PAC10.2 fans.

Some already referenced the point that Utah is a state school and easier to get into as a resident. Recently it's much harder to get accepted to BYU, especially as a local. The trend is such that less and less native Utahns are going to be Y grads. Just a fact. The recent BYU50 countdown promotion proves that there are many loyal alumni all over the country.

"My statements are facts, cold hard facts. Being a member of the PAC12 is a million times better than byu-p's status as an independent."

Kind of an opinion rather than a fact but I'm humored by the fact that you have personalized utah's pac membership as if it's got something to do with you on an individual level.

That's even funnier than calling an opinion fact or throwing hyperbole into your fact.

But hey, if it makes you feel like a superior individual then go your way and ride that rocket to a joyful life.

Personally I'm glad that I can have my team go 4-9 and function like nothing happened, but that's an opinion and not a universal fact 1,000,000x better than yours so you win again.

It's not surprising. For one thing, the rivalry has been pretty lopsided for a while now. Of course Utah would have marginally more fans within the state it is named after when the rivalry pendulum is swinging its way.

For another thing, BYU probably has as many fans outside the state of Utah as inside (if not more). This poll of course was only measuring the amount of fans within the state. On a national basis, BYU still has a much larger fan base than Utah.

A few trends to look at.

first of all, while we say "conservative and democrat" it's a more PC way of describing religious demographics in the state of Utah, which have changed significantly over the years and while not all BYU fans affiliate one way, and there are tons of Ute fans who are religiously affiliated with the majority religion, that trend goes towards fanship a bit and certainly skews the numbers.

second, this is within the state of Utah, last numbers I saw outside of Utah has BYU ahead by a huge margin - but what level is counted - for example if you ask me my favorite team I'll say BYU, if you ask me for my top 3 I'll say BYU, Utah and Florida (#3 changes from time to time, I might even say USU). So it's hard to track.

third, the poll was taken after the ugliest BYU season in history, die hard fans remain.

On that third point, it won't take BYU beating Utah, it takes BYU beating UMass and most other teams.

BYU looks like it might have an exciting offense again, that's more satisfying than winning with a defense to the common joe.

Congrats to the Utes for pulling up, does it matter? I will wear blue in a sea of red any day, I'm a BYU fan first, will always be.

Its interesting that the D News compares politics to BYU/Utah Football. I always felt that Utah fans of the 70's, through 2003 were more anti-BYU fans more than die hard Ute fans. Just like there tend to be more anti-Trump fans than there are pro-Hillary voters. I wonder if you could measure true dedicated fans if Utah fans would outnumber BYU fans in Utah. Then when you go national/World Wide fans it's not even close.

lot of folks don't realize that many utah democrats might well be republicans in other states, where republicans tend to be moderates.

been a libertarian sort for over 40 years, and have found some of them on both brigham young and utah campus. not sure what it has to do with who one roots for.

for most of us fandom is based on couple things~~where you went to school or who your family roots for. my wife is a byu graduate and i a utah graduate. we tend to root for both, except when they play each other. we had season tickets to utah football for close to 30 years because of living in salt lake at the time. that was in the darkest of times for utah football , and then thru the mac era and the transformation into a winning program again.

there is no conservative value by rooting for byu, as there is no liberal value by rooting for utah. both schools are more conservative than most of their peers in other states. when its all said and done its just sports.

There have been close games, but the current streak of 12 of 15 is not close. Being a rivalry game, BYU will upset Utah at some point, but swing the win-loss pendulum the other way? That will take something big, like when BYU hired Crowton and Utah hired Meyer.

This survey is funny to me because in the past 5 years or so, the two topics (sports fandom and political affiliation) have a lot more in common than they logically should. People pick their favorite sports team because maybe their parents were fans and they spent their childhood hearing how great they are; or maybe there was a person on that team they really liked, or a playbook strategy; and if you're a fan of that team's rival, ooooh you better watch it, pal.

But then in politics, people indoctrinate their kids that (party X) is smart and (party Y) is bad; or along comes Senator So-and-so, or they stood up for that one thing I agree with, so I like them; so now I'm a (party X)er, and if you're a (party Y)er, oooooh, you better watch it, pal!

Go Cougars. It is fun to be the underdog!

The instant BYU starts beating my Utes again the fair-weather fans will go buy blue! Its funny how that works but everyone likes a winner. I think BYU is on the rise too. Hopefully Kyle is paying attention.

I bet if you did this survey 30 years ago, it would've been 85% BYU-P, 10% Utah, 5% USU.

My how times change. What happened? I'd be curious to hear BYU-P fans' take on this.

Not really a surprise considering it was probably at least 50-50 between BYU and Utah before the Utes went to the PAC12. BYU actually has more fans in California and Arizona than they do in Utah, so they probably still have more fans overall, but I think Utah has been gaining on them ever since the bandwagon hop-ons after their P5 invite.

I thought the political breakdown was also interesting but again, not surprising. I was surprised that I'm one of only 8% of Y fans who's Independent/Libertarian. I guess I just interact with a lot more Libertarian Y fans than there actually are.

Anyway, it's always go to see the local teams play well, and with the exception of Weber, they've had a good start to the season. Keep it rolling!

I'll cheer for byu before I become a liberal. Go Utes! Go Pac 12! Go conservatives!
