@ LivinLarge - Bountiful, UT - Sept. 10, 2018 1:26 p.m. - "It's amazing
what winning will do for a teams popularity..."Which makes you
wonder, are they really fans of the team or do they just like "winning"?
Prefer BYU: 44% Republicans, 6% DemocratsPrefer U of U: 61%
Democrats, 21% Republicans. There's a ton of meaning behind
those numbers. A ton. Wise people know exactly what I'm talking about.
It's amazing what winning will do for a teams popularity...
People choose the Cougars over the Utes simply because the Cougars aren't
the Utes.No other reason necessary.I am a U of U alum
and Ute fans are the most obnoxious, insecure fan base I have ever seen.It has nothing to do with a recruiting gap or wins or losses.
As long as the U continues to improve their recruiting and dominates the
head-to-head series the gap will only widen. The Utes have continually, other
than the Edwards years, dominated the series over the years so it's easy to
see who has the best program in the state. In almost 100 years the series has
been played the Cougars have won only 12 times outside of the Edwards years.
Why on earth would anyone choose the cougars over the Utes?
It’s pretty obvious to anyone not affiliated with DT that the secular Utes
are the team to follow.
I didn't realize we were still in Jr. High and worried about who is the
Wallbanger - Spanish Fork, UTSept. 7, 2018 5:18 p.m.Where’s Bluto, Phoenix, SnackWAC and WACougmidmajor to post the ancient

tell us that “times are changing” and “we’ll beat U THIS
year” based off a win vs a PAC 12 team/s that’ll probably barely
make a bowl, if that. ------------LOL great question. But after today's result, I dont see Arizona making a bowl game.
They will prob finish last in the South. As usual, byu-p's
"big time wins" are going to get worse and worse as the year goes on.
The poll was done in downtown Salt Lake.
grumpoldman - Springville, UTSept. 7, 2018 6:50 p.m.The Utes were
able to increase their fan base in the early 2000's by 1) increasing their
facilities thanks to the 2002 Olympics. 2) Selling out to the BCS College
Football monopoly now called the Power 5 by jumping on their big money ship
(Pac12 expansion). and 3) Stealing as many coaches and recruits from BYU.
(Whitinghams, Covey's, et all) Fortunately many are coming back (Sitake,
Kaufusi, etc.) The thing BYU fans can always count on is they will always have
the bigger national, worldwide fan base, and Utah will never win the Pac 12 in
Football.-----We didn't steal Covey, you
weren't smart enough to offer him a scholarship.We didn't
steal Whittingham, he "rejected" you TWICE just like the PAC-10.BYU sold out its basketball and other programs for lesse leagues by
jumping on ESPN "big money ship" for football. The thing BYUs
"world wide" fans can count on is a annual loss to THE University of
I never even knew what BYU was before I moved to Utah. I assumed it was the name
of some manufacturing plant or company or something like that. I did however
know what the PAC-12 was.
I have never been envious of anything the Utah Utes have done in fact their fans
are by far the most annoying in the country. If anything they have way
underachieved the last 15 years with the number of NFL players they have put in
the league you would think they would have more to show for it than a string of
wins against BYU. Championships are what measure winners something I don't
see happening until they get some an NFL caliber Quarterback something they
haven't been able to get since Mitchell. And if you really don't want
to lose those fans one thing you can learn from the "Y" is don't
schedule Weber St. and Idaho St., patsies really do make you look week even if
you do end up blowing them out.
@toosmartforyouUtah was the only undefeated team in 2008, so under
the same criteria Utah would have bee "awarded" the NC.BYUs
NC was not unanimous, and Utah was given the no. 1 position in several polls,.
Hence on NCAA records they are shown as having a no. 1 finish.I
don't think anyone with half a brain would put a 6-5 Michigan team in the
same class as a ,10-1 Alabama team.
Real UteAll we hear from Utah fans is how they’re one of the
big boys now, yet the Utes aren’t even capable of winning a division
championship, and their highest Sagarin-ranked bowl opponent since joining the
PAC 12 was BYU in the Las Vegas Bowl.
Real Ute said:"If BYU was such a gem, why doesn't anyone
want them?"Put another way, if BYU was such a great catch for a
P5 Conference, they would have already been caught.
If BYU was such a gem, why doesn't anyone want them? Any factual, tangible
fact concerning Utah vs BYU popularity, academic rankings, university value in
research income, tv ratings, gate sales, licensed merchandise revenue and
affiliations galore all eclipse BYU easily. All we hear from Y fans is
"worldwide fanbase, huge old-world stadium, etc"....... just lip service
stuff is all.......

I hate to break the news but the majority of Utah fans never graduated from
college. So the argument that more are accepted doesn’t really change that
@Grumpoldman,Lol! Wow! Now THAT is some serious jealousy.
Over 80 percent of Utah students are from Utah, only one third of BYU students
are - and it has been that way for decadesAs a result- more BYU alum/fans
live outside of Utah than in (as evidenced by their large attendance at away
games)So it is only logical that as U alum concentrate and Y alum
disperse, there will be more U fans in Utah and more Y fans everywhere else

fans in other nations when they have their own sports like soccer. And where has that alleged fan base been the past seven seasons?Attendance at road games and TV ratings say otherwise.
Bluto - Sandy, UTSept. 7, 2018 6:42 p.m.Before U of U fans begin to

poll..809 people (likely voters) is what determined the results in
this poll.809 people out of 3 million Utah citizens?Let's get
real. Not a very large sample at all.Silly.------------------This is the same guy/gal who a few years back
was doing cartwheels for a similar "online" poll which found BYU was the
top school in the State. This scientific poll has a margin of error
of 3.4%. At +7% Utah is well over the error level.
This is funny reading about what ute partisans give for the reasons. For one
thing, you'd hardly get a stir out of anyone except the particular school
itself by claiming a decade later that you had a NC because ONE voting segment
thought you were the best team in the country but no one else bothered to vote
that way. It would be hilarious to see how u fans would react if it were BYU
and not them; they can't accept the consensus 1984 NC that was given to the
only undefeated team in the country-the ONLY one. So there's that. They claim they have a better stadium.
Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-Arizona's stadium seats more than the u. Maybe if they
said they had the dinkiest stadium that would be believable, but USU and WSU
would call them out on that. And somehow in all their mighty
education from a research institution they keep referring to some school named
BYU-P. There is no such place and never has been.Plus, they
don't exaggerate or embellish, do they? Really, "a million times
better"? Alabama isn't a million times better than Idaho State or
Wyoming. Nice try; get real PAC10.2 fans.
Chris B - Salt Lake City, UTSept. 7, 2018 2:01 p.m.I'll cheer

Some already referenced the point that Utah is a state school and easier to get
into as a resident. Recently it's much harder to get accepted to BYU,
especially as a local. The trend is such that less and less native Utahns are
going to be Y grads. Just a fact. The recent BYU50 countdown promotion proves
that there are many loyal alumni all over the country.
"My statements are facts, cold hard facts. Being a member of the PAC12 is a
million times better than byu-p's status as an independent."Kind of an opinion rather than a fact but I'm humored by the fact that
you have personalized utah's pac membership as if it's got something
to do with you on an individual level. That's even funnier than
calling an opinion fact or throwing hyperbole into your fact. But
hey, if it makes you feel like a superior individual then go your way and ride
that rocket to a joyful life.Personally I'm glad that I can
have my team go 4-9 and function like nothing happened, but that's an
opinion and not a universal fact 1,000,000x better than yours so you win again.
@pluto Your jealousy is awesome. It makes me feel so special,
thanks. My statements are facts, cold hard facts. Being a member of
the PAC12 is a million times better than byu-p's status as an independent.
But you can dream....
I remember someone telling me once that the trouble with BYU fans is that they
are always looking to the past, trying to recapture the Glory Years, and
therefore having difficulty enjoying the present. On the other hand, for Utah
fans the past wasn't all that great but the present is like Christmas every
@SimplemindedThanks for the laugh tonight.Utah...4
Conference Championships out of over 180 awarded.#Utah as a member
of the Pac-12...Irrelevant.
Why the U of U is the best:a better stadium, home of the olympic
games, capital city of the state and flagship school, PAC 12 affiliation,
national championship (recognized in 2008), BCS bowl wins, better recruits, 8
game win streak against arch-rival, longest current streak of sellouts. Its a no brainer really...
I go to one or two byu games each year, this year I've got one in provo,
but usually it's a road game for BYU.I'm fine standing in
a sea of a different color, I never buy away tickets, just get my boys and get
what's available. And I'm always beside byu fans,
we're never alone. Swings one way, back the other way, does it
make any team better than the other? Go byu and go utes, and a very
soft go to usu too
It's not surprising. For one thing, the rivalry has been pretty lopsided
for a while now. Of course Utah would have marginally more fans within the state
it is named after when the rivalry pendulum is swinging its way. For
another thing, BYU probably has as many fans outside the state of Utah as inside
(if not more). This poll of course was only measuring the amount of fans within
the state. On a national basis, BYU still has a much larger fan base than
When I was dropping off a child at BYU a few weeks ago, there were 50+ kids
wearing U and Utah State gear.
The U also beats BYU in another area percentage that will never change -
acceptance rates!81% that apply to the U get in, 49% that apply get into
BYU. And BYU has larger class sizes by 7000. Maybe that’s why? ;)(Or
maybe they went to Y and hated it:))
Many BYU graduates move outside the state of Utah. DNews, do the same poll
throughout the U.S. or even the world and my bet is you will find overwhelming
popularity for BYU over UoU.
The Utes were able to increase their fan base in the early 2000's by 1)
increasing their facilities thanks to the 2002 Olympics. 2) Selling out to the
BCS College Football monopoly now called the Power 5 by jumping on their big

Before U of U fans begin to hyperventilate...Always read the internals
whenever you review any poll..Never take the headline results at face
value. It's like whenever you see a poll/study touting the
virtues of alcohol, always look at the internals, it's almost always a
brewing company which paid for the study.809 people (likely voters)

all.Silly.Again, which program draws 20k more than the other
to their home games? The good news.... It's long been well
established that Liberals love the U and Conservatives love the Y.I'll take that. And that is why this U of U alum, will never receive
one dime of my money.@RedRock"U" think BYU fans are
just in Utah County?BYU also puts more in the stands on the road, than
does Utah.10k BYU fans @ Ga. Tech10k BYU fans @ Michigan
State.30k fans @ Phoenix Stadium vs Arizona
A few trends to look at.first of all, while we say "conservative
and democrat" it's a more PC way of describing religious demographics
in the state of Utah, which have changed significantly over the years and while
not all BYU fans affiliate one way, and there are tons of Ute fans who are
religiously affiliated with the majority religion, that trend goes towards
fanship a bit and certainly skews the numbers.second, this is within
the state of Utah, last numbers I saw outside of Utah has BYU ahead by a huge
margin - but what level is counted - for example if you ask me my favorite team
I'll say BYU, if you ask me for my top 3 I'll say BYU, Utah and
Florida (#3 changes from time to time, I might even say USU). So it's hard
to track.third, the poll was taken after the ugliest BYU season in
history, die hard fans remain. On that third point, it won't
take BYU beating Utah, it takes BYU beating UMass and most other teams.BYU looks like it might have an exciting offense again, that's more
satisfying than winning with a defense to the common joe.Congrats to
the Utes for pulling up, does it matter? I will wear blue in a sea of red any
day, I'm a BYU fan first, will always be.
Its interesting that the D News compares politics to BYU/Utah Football. I always
felt that Utah fans of the 70's, through 2003 were more anti-BYU fans more
than die hard Ute fans. Just like there tend to be more anti-Trump fans than
there are pro-Hillary voters. I wonder if you could measure true dedicated fans
if Utah fans would outnumber BYU fans in Utah. Then when you go national/World
Wide fans it's not even close.
"The survey found 44 percent of Republicans prefer BYU, while only 6 percent
of Democrats felt the same."Since most Mormons are Republican,
that is not a surprise. BYU's support is primarily Mormons and Utah
County.I live in Washington County, still heavily Mormon, but I see
Utah clothes, hats, flags, and license plates outnumbering BYU by almost a three
to one margin. Anecdotal evidence I admit, but that's what I've seen.
No surprise here. After all, it is THE University of Utah.
lot of folks don't realize that many utah democrats might well be
republicans in other states, where republicans tend to be moderates. been a libertarian sort for over 40 years, and have found some of them on
both brigham young and utah campus. not sure what it has to do with who one
roots for.for most of us fandom is based on couple things~~where you
went to school or who your family roots for. my wife is a byu graduate and i a
utah graduate. we tend to root for both, except when they play each other.
we had season tickets to utah football for close to 30 years because of living
in salt lake at the time. that was in the darkest of times for utah football ,
and then thru the mac era and the transformation into a winning program again.
there is no conservative value by rooting for byu, as there is no
liberal value by rooting for utah. both schools are more conservative than
most of their peers in other states. when its all said and done its just

tell us that “times are changing” and “we’ll beat U THIS

permanently for Utah being the most popular college team in the state. And
remember, football drives the bus...by far! And yes, I 100% believe byu will
upset the Utes again one day. But I think Utah will win 90% of the games for the
foreseeable future. Maybe higher. Go Utes!!!
Lots of BYU fans in the 70’s and 80’s because the teams won a lot
and were fun to watch. My family had season tickets during the glory years to
BYU football and Utah basketball. I loved watching Neilson and especially
McMahon. I haven’t lived in Utah for 20+ years, but I am always amazed
when I return at the amount of Ute gear I see. It was not like that when I
It's been that way since at least 2000.
"The instant BYU starts beating my Utes again the fair-weather fans will go
buy blue! "How you define "beating"? One game? There have been close games, but the current streak of 12 of 15 is not close.
Being a rivalry game, BYU will upset Utah at some point, but swing the win-loss
pendulum the other way? That will take something big, like when BYU hired
Crowton and Utah hired Meyer.
It’s not so much a question of “if”, but “when”,
the tide will turn in the series.LaVell was 13-13-1 in his first 27
games, with his 2nd season being his only losing season.Sitake is
14-13 in his first 27 games.
This survey is funny to me because in the past 5 years or so, the two topics
(sports fandom and political affiliation) have a lot more in common than they
logically should. People pick their favorite sports team because maybe their
parents were fans and they spent their childhood hearing how great they are; or
maybe there was a person on that team they really liked, or a playbook strategy;
and if you're a fan of that team's rival, ooooh you better watch it,
pal.But then in politics, people indoctrinate their kids that (party
X) is smart and (party Y) is bad; or along comes Senator So-and-so, or they
stood up for that one thing I agree with, so I like them; so now I'm a
(party X)er, and if you're a (party Y)er, oooooh, you better watch it, pal!
Literally the dumbest system I've ever heard of.
You have to hand it to the Utes They have done a great job with the football
program and getting into the Pac 12 . I didn't want to believe that they
could ever recruit better than BYU but proven wrong. Still a BYU fan at heart
even through 2017 wasn't a good year. I wish the Ute's well and know
that they will always be tough with Whitt as the coach. Go BYU!!
No surprise here.I expect this all along...Go Utes!
at long last. . .“I am certain this is a resounding shock for
a large number of fans who wear the blue goggles. I am reminded of how times
change.”2017 was the low water mark for BYU.It’s funny how quickly times can change - see 1964 to 1965.One year you’re the dominant team in the state. The next, you
see BYU begin its meteoric rise to national champions, while you aren’t
even good enough to qualify for a bowl game for the next quarter century.
I'm not surprised by this poll at all and am happy to read facts! I was
luckily born a Ute and a staunch Democrat. Cheers and Goooooooo
Brave Sir Robin:"My how times change. What happened? I'd be
curious to hear BYU-P fans' take on this."I think I already
kind of answered it in my post, but I think as Utah has had more success
recently with BCS games and then the invite to the PAC12, there are many in the
younger generation that have been caught up in red fever and have evened out the
fanbases here in Utah. It's not really that surprising considering
I've watched Utah's brand grow here in the state before my eyes
(especially with teens and young adults).
I am certain this is a resounding shock for a large number of fans who wear the
blue goggles. I am reminded of how times change. When I first
moved here, there was a blue-goggled true believer who told me that byu was the
home team wherever they played in Utah, even on the hill. I frequently have
thought about weak-chinned, watery-eyed Bruce over the past eight years and the
results of the rivalry game. LOL My prediction is that increasing
support for the Utes is a very long term trend and will not change and may even
Go Cougars. It is fun to be the underdog!I can't wait until November.
The instant BYU starts beating my Utes again the fair-weather fans will go buy
blue! Its funny how that works but everyone likes a winner. I think BYU is on
the rise too. Hopefully Kyle is paying attention.
They've been my team for 40 years.
I bet if you did this survey 30 years ago, it would've been 85% BYU-P, 10%
Utah, 5% USU.My how times change. What happened? I'd be curious
to hear BYU-P fans' take on this.
This is news?
Not really a surprise considering it was probably at least 50-50 between BYU and
Utah before the Utes went to the PAC12. BYU actually has more fans in California
and Arizona than they do in Utah, so they probably still have more fans overall,
but I think Utah has been gaining on them ever since the bandwagon hop-ons after
their P5 invite. I thought the political breakdown was also
interesting but again, not surprising. I was surprised that I'm one of only
8% of Y fans who's Independent/Libertarian. I guess I just interact with a
lot more Libertarian Y fans than there actually are. Anyway,
it's always go to see the local teams play well, and with the exception of
Weber, they've had a good start to the season. Keep it rolling!
I'll cheer for byu before I become a liberal. Go Utes! Go Pac 12! Go
