It is so frightening to see fires and the smoke so close to homes. We have prayed that homes will be protected and lives will also be protected from this danger. I'm hoping there will be no more people starting fires. It breaks my heart to think of all these wonderful homes being destroyed and families not having a place to go. I walked down to the mailbox this early pm..I've never smelled smoke like this and I worry about very elderly folks and small children inhaling it. I'm grateful we live where we do and that we are safe and most of all.....we are so thankful for the firemen and any others who have been involved in keeping us safe. We are so blessed and pray that soon this will be over and those who have had their homes and property damaged or lost it that families and friends and neighbors will be willing to help - to feed - to protect - that we all will pray to Heavenly Father for His guidance and lives will be preserved.

Can some rational person tell me why fires like these are preferred over logging and thinning to reduce combustible fuel?

Utah is so under prepared and under funded to fight fire. The small crews do their best but most of these fires damage so much pristine land that a whole generation of people will never see. Very depressing.

Well, we don't have to go to North Carolina now to see the Great Smokey Mountains. We have them right here in Utah now unfortunately.
