I trust the new AD will be reading comments, such as many of those here, and will decide there is no reason for continuation of any contact with byu in the area of sports. Why deal with a classless hate-filled, and frankly, not very smart byu fan base if there is no need?

Is he going to clean up the extensive academic fraud reported by Mike Abu that the administration and coaching staff have been alerted to?

Sorry to disappoint you but the things I ‘m talking about didn’t happen in Provo. I personally observed most of them, read the papers about some, watched the video on many. Don’t know about your mythologies but I was talking Utah foibles not some other schools.

Mark Harlan appears to be a real breath of fresh air coming from the hill. He seems like a classy guy and that will hopefully have a good effect on ute nation.

Welcome to the state of Utah Mark!

"The Mark Harlan era begins at Utah with promises of openness, accountability and an embrace of a friendly and fierce rivalry"

    ----------------

Openness AND accountability? Wow, that's going to be quite the adjustment for ute fans. We've never heard of that coming from Utah athletics before. Then on top of that they have to be friendly??? This will be a lot for them to tackle all at once.

Maybe someone should tell Harlan to ease into the job a little, he's going to traumatize his fanbase and put them into shock trying to do too much all at once. I give him credit though for being ambitious!

SLCWatch: "There is a long history of Utah coaches, players and especially fans being the classless of the conference not the classy."

And most of your "history" is made-up folklore from Provo. Utah fans didn't throw garbage on the refs and attack a cheerleader. That's on film, not made up. Nice try.

Well, since we already saw how he went out of his way to assure the Ute faithful that the BYU rivalry wasn't going anywhere, its disappointing you feel this way about Utah State. They are much tougher competition than the San Jose State game you usually schedule.

To classless BYU and Utah fans. Please remember that what you write does not represent the majority of BYU and Utah fans. Most fans are agreeable and admirable and try to get along with each other's schools and their fans. Several LDS leaders were Utah graduates and several Utah coaches/assistants were BYU graduates. Some folks out there have attended both schools. Why don't we just try to get along with each other. Let's keep the screaming and yelling for when the games are played and let's not belittle each other. Let's be class fans. Let's emulate Harlan and Holmoe. They have very difficult jobs - they have to please the fans of their schools and their administrations. Come on, people, let's be more like the Savior.

Welcome to the hill Mr. Harlan! It is a great place with great people! You will absolutely love it here.

A class act for a class University with class fans!

It's always a great day to be a Ute!

"kick 'em to the curb" is right. How do you compete with a fan base that counts losses as wins and proclaim the critics to be their #1 fans...

The only way we win is to take them off the schedule and ignore them.

Seems like a great AD, not sure that Holmoe is leading BYU in the right direction, Harlan sounds amazing on paper, I guess we'll see how it works out for Utah.

"embrace the fierce and friendly rivalry"... Yes, that needs to happen. After all, who wouldn't agree the situation with Colorado has gotten out of hand. 😂

Nicely written article. I really appreciate the research and the quotes from old colleagues of Mark. I'm looking forward to seeing how he handles the agenda that has been handed to him.

I am a University of Utah graduate. I attended graduate school there. That being said I hope Mr. Harlan can bring good things to the “U”. First he can bring ethical standards that enhance sportsmanship, disavow offensive fan behaviors that push away supporters and rivals. Teach sportsmanship to coaches that try to “win at all costs” over respectful conduct. Hold the student body MUSS to behavior closer to civilized conduct than a controlled riot. Restrain coaches from showing lack of respect to other opponents and insist on their being admirable rather than embarrassing. There is a long history of Utah coaches, players and especially fans being the classless of the conference not the classy.

Hopefully, he won’t be scared to play Weber State or Utah State in basketball. The Utah Taxpayers deserve to see the Utes, Weber State, and Utah State.

Chris Hill was to much of a coward to play either of those teams after getting beat a couple times.

Here’s proof Utah is still the most obsessed fan base in the state:

An excellent article introducing a great new AD and new era for Utah and all you can think about is BYU. Your our #1 fan!

    Try to keep up.

The article stated an obsessed BYU fan, maybe Space Noodle, created a fake Twitter account to take a jab at Utah.

Wow, this guy is the breath of fresh air we've needed for about a decade now. I'm so glad he's here, I'm excited to see what he can bring to the table for us! We've been mired in the mud, mid to bottom of the PAC since we joined, let's rise and take over!

As for BYU, bah, who needs 'em? Go Utes!

Here is "proof" that the #1 most obsessed fan base is Cougar Nation:

    1. Harlan fake Twitter account created by a BYU "fan"

    2. 50,000 BYU "fans" emailing Vegas Bowl reps pleading them to demote Utah to Vegas in 2015.

BYU fan here. Mark Harlan appears to be a really class guy and a genuine leader! I want to wish him well and from what I can see he will bring some new perspective and some new classiness to the old rivalry which is sorely needed.

Good to have you here in our community Mr. Harlan. Best of success to you and to the programs you represent - which in a round about way is really our State of Utah with the University of Utah being the flagship of the state Universities.
