The far leftist liberals want open borders, which makes a nation a terrible one.

Here's Romney's problem. He has been on the national stage since 2008, making statements about immigration.

Like most politicians, his position has evolved on the subject. Anything he says will result in a quote from him, claiming that he's waffling.

(Don't get me wrong; Romney can legitimately be accused on flip-flopping.)

Trump is holding Republicans accountable on immigration, something that hasn't happened since the 2000 campaign, when GWB and Rove campaigned on amnesty.

Trump aligns well with the GOP platform. Voters liked that in 2016.

Mitt is not there with Trump. Not yet. But Jenny clearly is buying the narrative in the news these days.

Romney has a great deal to lose by debating Jenny on this topic. He's acquiesced too much already. If his base stays home, it'll be 2012 all over again.

Language, borders, and culture! Sounds like Mitt is the candidate for me this time around. Wilson is an open borders supporter and I will not vote for any candidate holding such a view.

I agree with Romney for the most part here. I don't agree that university or trade skills should be part of the merit list, though I strongly feel English fluency is. Langauge learning is more accessible regardless of class or social status. For a poor family in Mexico who may not be able to access training or further education, learning English is still very possible. It is also a better transition skill.

Additionally, a person with skills and training in other countries is likely better off there than those without skills, so it is more humanistic to focus on language skills than education.

Of course many left wingers will step into the issue naively and create even more divisiveness and long-term problems, while some of Trump's far-right supporters will continue to push for a wall, anti-Muslim immigration, and the threat and practice of dividing families at the border.

Romney should have been listened to when he spoke up about Russia being America's greatest threat, his fair and equitable immigration policy, and Trump's poor character before the election.

Forgive us all, Mitt. Here's hoping you can be talked into running in 2020.

What is there to debate? TLhis is not about immigration or immigrants entering the US, its about the extortion by democrats and other illegal aliens don't want to obey or laws and have law and order in out cities. The democrats have nothing to argue, unless they wish to con stipulate defeat and helping Americans stop the invasion of our country for what it is. An economic destruction of our lifves and freedoms and pursuit of happiness.

Pursuit of happiness is a right that only legal and actual american citizens are entitled to, everyone else is a deadly economic threat that should be dealt with with deadly prejudice.

Romney has advocated passing e-verify and forcing those here illegally to self deport. She wants amnesty.

It's the same old song we have heard for 30+ years, Democrats want a eighth amnesty (yes eighth) and Romney wants the laws enforced.

@Thomas Thompson "Romney has such a lopsided margin of support that he'd be very foolish indeed to debate Jenny Wilson ..."

Right, why don't we just have one party "sustaining votes?"

Nothing will happen on immigration, EVER! Neither party has the will to do anything in this country on anything, much less immigration. Congress has become relegated to a bunch of do nothing folks who only goal is to to snipe at each other. It's a waste of time discussing the issue anymore.

@Red Smith - It's this kind of thinking that makes many, including myself, are considering going independent. The extremism of many within the democrat and republican parties is what is dividing the country. Most of us, thankfully, are still center-right or center-left. But there are more far-right and far-left today than there have been in decades. To say that someone who is center-right is not a republican is wrong. You far-righters do not represent the republican party, yet. If that changes, you will lose a lot of your base. Call me a "rhino" if you must, but us rhinos are the base, not your self-defined "true conservatives." The all-or-nothing tribalism mentality of politics is ridiculous. There are good points from each party, and there are absurd ones. I can't be all-in with everything either party says, because although each party thinks they have the moral monopoly, truth is, neither does.

The immigration debate is a boondoggle from minute one. You have the left that elevates and amplifies the emotion of the issue beyond any reasonable level at the exclusion of the concepts of justice, sovereignty, and security. Any mention of this and the wailing intensifies as any reasonable discussion of actual immigration policy ensues.

Good public policy will have consequences for those who violate it's tenets. We have ignored the rule of law and created for ourselves a situation where there will be extreme losers as we attempt to put things back on track. The solution posited by some is to just ignore justice, sovereignty, and security and avoid any unfairness or harm. This cannot be. We will destroy our values and society that we have built over the last two hundred years.

I can hear the rebuttals of "But we are all immigrants" ringing across the cloud. Examine the immigration policies of the past and you will see that they are far more selective and exclusionary than that crowd would ever concede. Look at the order imposed. Look at the adoption of the ideals of the host country. It was mandatory!

Today the system is broken. There will be pain to fix it.

What kind of a debate would this be when they both agree on the issue? Now that the primaries are over, Mitt has shaken his etch-a-sketch and is back to being a big-business, open-borders Koch brother that is pretty much exactly lined up with Jenny Wilson.

The only interesting thing about such a debate would be the inclusion of a third party candidate that actually has something different to say about immigration. Utah desperately needs a third party alternative to the Republi-crat uniparty.

    @water rocket
An act of desperation, you say?

It's a Hail Mary. Jenny is looking for a Candy Crowley Moment here...and Mitt will probably give her one.

This could turn into a pity party. Facial tissues imprinted with "Vote for Jenny," passed out to the crowd.

Both newspapers are pro-amnesty. Romney is walking the globalist tightrope as it is.

If Mitt just keeps his mouth shut, he'll replace Orrin. The Church will be glad to have him. But Romney can snatch defeat from the jaws of victory if he isn't careful.

One general debate in October is the correct strategy. By then the border mess will settle down and solutions will emerge. Right now, it's too hot to touch...just like the Democrats planned.

    Keep your head down, Mitt.

Let me see if I got this straight, Jenny Wilson, who has never done anything outside of Salt Lake County, is challenging Mitt Romney, a former governor, leader of the Winter Olympics, former Presidential nominee, and organizer of an international corporation to a debate on immigration? This appears to be an act of desperation to me.
