We’re all schmucks for allowing it to happen. Vote D next time...oh wait....can’t do that. Can’t be a Democrat and a good ‘Saint’ at the same time! /s

It would be a great investigative piece to follow the money and the connections that Hughes has had with many issues and developments during his time as a "public servant".

He seems to enrich himself, UTA, Prison decision, land usage, and now this deal.

What is it with Republicans? This makes no sense and reeks of something fishy.

Hughes seems to come out financially better each and every time. Seems to be a pattern.

    Nice retirement Hughes.

    Will he pardon himself?

I made a comment that there must be a path to making some money. Obviously, I was referencing Hughes' motivation for appointing himself. Alas, my comment was denied for some vague reason. Thus, I'll repeat and endorse the comments of others there were not denied. "master of conflict of interest" - now what does that mean? "scoundrels who held office for the purpose of shenanigans that would enrich themselves" - you mean money might be involved? "Can you say Cash Cow?" - money again? For whom? "Prison move and UTA Deja vu" - there is that self interest thing again. "a retiring politician helps create a new government job and then appoints himself to it" - doesn't a job mean money? "Utah makes old Chicago politics look like kindergarten." - there's that corruption thing again. I guess I should have been more specific. But there is consensus among all the comments. I can't figure out why a vague suggestion was more objectionable that specific allegations and claims.

How does the common man get any justice here? Is there any recourse to have him removed? This is guy has remained unchecked with undue influence for years, and this is how it unfolds - this is as blatant as it gets.

That doesn't seem right to appoint himself.

    2 Questions:
    1. How many other perfectly well qualified candidates were there?
    2. What is the salary / compensation for this position? ...I’m assuming it’s rather desirable.

There is a high degree of complacency amount Utahans as a whole, but it seems to be particularly prevelant with members of Utah’s predominant political party.

If Hughes is in, you know Niedermeyer can't be far behind.

Lemme guess- he also wants to sign the checks too. Utah makes old Chicago politics look like kindergarten.

Well, we all know that most Republican lawmakers in Utah are good, church-going folk, and therefore we can always count on them to do good things.

    Shame on you, Speaker Hughes!

If a high ranking politician appoints an unqualified (or even a qualified) relative to a government job, it used to be called nepotism and was considered to be reprehensible, if not outright illegal.

But, what is it called when a retiring politician helps create a new government job and then appoints himself to it?

    This should not be allowed!

Greg Hughes needs to find a real job, not another sweetheart government job with opportunities to pull strings on huge projects involving millions of dollars.

Prison relocation, UTA, port authority. These kinds of projects are magnets for the opportunistic. Greg Hughes was already chairman of the UTA and on the prison relocation commission. I don't believe that kind of leadership experience should be brought to the port authority.

What about city’s rights ? Most of this port is in Salt Lake City Limits. The city has had to take care of this property, it is the city’s fire department who takes cares of fires out there, it is the city that takes care of the roads. So why should the state be able usurp this land and take it away from the city and give it to some new port authority appointed mostly by the state? Where were the state and the port authority when no one wanted this land ? Who will pay for road development or put out the fires ?
Why shouldn’t the city have more say in the matter of land use and why should they not get the tax benefits from this when they have been Shepard of this land for decades ?

There used to be a time when Americans didn't tolerate scoundrels who held office for the purpose of shenanigans that would enrich themselves. Now, we just look the other way and do nothing..... especially if the scoundrel belongs to our own party. Welcome to the new world my fellow pseudo Americans, we have much to be ashamed of.

Is the master of conflict of interesting going to get away with this. He has amassed a good deal of money through undue influence i. UTA, charter schools and general property development playing a very shady game? How can this commision happen this way and how can he be appointed. We deserve better the. This self interested joker.
