    Replying to Weston Jurney:

    You are correct (and another reader mentioned a longer Sierra NV / west coast trail, as well.)

    Perhaps the DesNews headline ought to have read “UT *WILL BE* home to longest trail network west of the MS Rvr.”

    But the article DID say this:
    “...the completion of the Golden Spoke Trail [...] contribute[s] to the state's goal of creating 1,000 new miles of family friendly trails across Utah in the next 10 years.”

    Holy-Schamoly-What Baloney. (Fighting an urge to say, "the name says it.")

    Is there some reason that things have to be either-or? Can't we have better roads AND bike paths?

    I once attended a public hearing of planners where another attendee said we "needed more bike trails" and after I mentioned some that were in place he said he "wanted to ride his bike from Bear Lake to Lake Powell" because the existing trails were too short and he wanted a change of scenery that lasted a long time. I replied "I'm OK with that, JUST AS SOON AS U.S. Highway 6 from Spanish Fork to Green River is built to freeway standards and is NO LONGER Utah's Death Strip!!" The planner shook his head and stated "We all have different priorities, don't we?" I suppose recreational bicycling is important, but so is auto safety, particularly when you are at risk of death from another driver that lacks patience to pass coming towards you.

    I'm not a cyclist and don't do long distances. I do, however, run and walk on the Jordan River trail. I've been from 3900 South to 14600 South. The JR trail is a great place for families, cyclists, skaters, runners, and walkers. It has a minimum of auto traffic, tunnels that go under major streets, and is the closest thing to nature that I've found within walking distance along the Wasatch Front. Thanks and congratulations to all the cities who cooperate on keeping the trail system safe and clear of snow in the wintertime.

    Regardless of where the trail ranks in length, it’s quite an accomplishment. It’s great that the various municipalities chose this method of reclaiming abandoned rail bed instead of just plowing them under and building more homes over them. Urban trails have shown to increase property values and improve the health of neighbors adjacent to those trails. Urban planning and highway building should include trail planning in those projects. UDOT used to have a bicycle coordinator. Fortunately, they still have a few bicycle minded engineers employed or trail planning on the state level would go nowhere. I’ve ridden portions of all the trails that are now interconnected. Get out and enjoy them. You may be surprised what a little fresh air will do for your well-being.

    The author is not aware of the Pacific Crest Trail which runs from the Mexican Border up through the Sierra Nevada and Siskyou Mountains in California, up the Cascades in Oregon and Washington to the Canadian Border. I think that is about 1500 miles. Oh by the way the trail is only about 7 miles east of where I live.

    "West of the Mississippi?" Nope. West of the Missouri, maybe. The Katy Trail in Missouri is just shy of 240 miles long.
