Catalan is probably the largest language in Western Europe that doesn't have its own country. There are more speakers of the various Catalan dialects than there are people in a number of Western European Countries; for example Denmark, Norway, Ireland, Slovakia, and Slovenia. When Franco was the dictator of Spain there was a concerted effort to eliminate both Catalan and Basque as languages. I think it is quite reasonable for the Catalans to be independent from Spain. They are approaching it in a reasonable democratic manner. The British were allowed Scotland to vote on the same question, Spain should allow to a vote on the same matter.
