Oberammergau at any time of year is magical. Christmas is wonderfulThe many
woodcarving shops and carvers make it obvious it is the original home of
Geppetto who gave creation and therefore birth to Pinocchio. But the most
memorable time of any visitor is witnessing the Miracle Pageant depicting the
last days of Christ’s life. Although in German, a program book is provided
to each attendee in any of many languages and it is easy to follow. Scenes
are memorable, especially the Saviors crucifixion and resurrection. It was so
memorable it seems improper to comment on the scenes, but tears flow and
emotions are memorable after many years. It should not be missed during a
persons lifetime and reflect often on the Saviors ultimate sacrifice and His
Fathers gift to us! Guests should stay in a local Gasthof (Guesthouse)and
enjoy the food and “flavor” of the Tuen. Do not miss the massive
marble sculpture of Christ given to the town by King Ludwig of Bavaria after
viewing the play. It is a short hike up the hill above the town.
My wife and I have been to Oberammergau twice, but unfortunately not during the
Passion play. It's a wonderful town and we loved our extended stays there.
We got to know the people with whom we stayed as guests in their B&B and we
consider them to be friends with whom we maintain contact. Even if you
can't attend the play, I highly recommend visiting Oberammergau!
