Not sure we're "looking to renew the men's basketball rivalry"
so much as after seven years Tom Holmoe's incessant begging finally yielded
a "yes" from San Diego State. The WCC has made BYU soft, but
we are sharp. I hardly see it as a fair match.
Two thumbs up!
The Aztecs are a fun rivalry in basketball and will help the SOS for BYU. Nice
move and hope to see bball games with UNLV on the schedule soon as well.As for those commenting about BYU needing to join the MWC I say:"why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?"We
already get regularly scheduled games with Boise St, Utah St, etc and recently
have played New Mexico in bball, UNLV, SJSU, Fresno St in football, etc.
There's no need to join a deflated conference and lose national TV exposure
and athletic dept revenues just to add a few more of their teams to our
@jacobiuntherusGood BYU! Now see what you can do to join the MWC and get
into a place where you can compete for conference championships (including
football). This independence thing and membership in the WCC certainly
hasn't turned out to amount to much that is satisfying to we the fans.------------There's simply not a lot of data to support
that position regarding Independence and certainly no evidence that joining a
declining g5 conference would improve anything for BYU.Since leaving
the MWC BYU has doubled athletic dept revenues (far outpacing MWC schools), has
avg 8 wins a year in football (same as when they were in the MWC), have
significantly increased TV exposure (again blows away the MWC here), and has
seen a resurgence of their Olympic sports programs (both men's and
women's v-ball have played for national championships, mens/women's
bball, women's golf, baseball and softball have all played in the NCAA
tourney, Final Four appearances by women's soccer, T&F and XC running
nationally ranked, etc) and currently sit ranked #19 in the Learfield Directors
Cup standings and men's and women's bball have put players in the
Blue Husky: "When I lived in Mission Viejo, I loved to go to BYU vs UCSD
games. Always tough and fun. Especially in Football. And it was fun to listen to
USCD Radio where they invariably complained about BYU's big, grown up,
players."Nice story, but what does that have to do with BYU-P
playing San Diego State?
SDSU is solid; nice job of scheduling. IMOGonzaga got rocked at SDSU last
year; they can play.
"BYU will never join the MWC for football. There are too many weak teams
now"Pluto:Yep, no invitation for BYU-P. The only
thing worse than a weak team is a weak diva.
“Blue Husky”:To clarify, BYU has never played UCSD in
basketball. They have played SDSU while members of the MWC and USD as mem bers
of the the WCC.
Not so fast Jacob blah blah...If the MWC were smart, they would have
already invited BYU for all the Olympic sports with a scheduling agreement for
football.BYU will never join the MWC for football. There are too
many weak teams now and they would take a 50% annual athletic department revenue
decrease, right off the top.And dealing with the Commissioner
Thompson, is a non starter. If BYU ever joins a G-5 league, the AAC
would be the better option.
BYU is such a winner. They can do no wrong.
San Diego State is so fortunate to have BYU on their schedule. Not
only does it elevate the strength of their schedule, it will no doubt be a boost
to their recruiting profile, and the financial boost will be significant when
Cougar fans come from all over Southern California to respectfully support the
Cougars when they visit Viejas Arena. And that is even not mentioning
the great influence that their players will enjoy by playing on the same court
with players of such great character as those at BYU.I'm so
glad that BYU and Tom Holmoe are willing to do this for SDSU. It just makes you
SDSU is my favorite team to play in basketball. It's way more fun than any
other local team. Love their fan base, city, and rivalry history. I really,
really like that school. I'm glad BYU is playing them yet again.
byu-p’s going to get absolutely worked next season, including in epic
fashion by us, where they’ll be down to us in the 20+ pt range for most of
the game, identical to their last 2 visits up there to play against us in SLC,
except this time we disallow them garbage time pts in skewing the final margin
& misleading some to erroneously believe it was in fact a competitive game,
which neither were, @ all, period.Go Utes!
"Alright, alright, alright!"(that should be read in your
best Matthew McConaughey voice)
