Rose has it much tougher than most coaches. Missions disrupt. Big time. When they come back after two years of inactivity, they're not in condition. The Church's lowering the age of missionaries has busted up the freshman-sophomore year. Mika goes one and done. Basketball is not football. You only need 1 great player and four good ones. But the one and done turmoil has really created havoc in college hoops.

I don't see how anyone can have continuity with the priorities Rose has to deal with. Yet his teams are very competitive every year. As for the "tiny" WCC, all you have to do is look at the "tiny" conferences in the East. Those conferences have been a factor in hoops for a century. It only takes a few good players and usually one great player. P5 refers only to football. In any given year, some tiny school, like Texas Western, Loyola of Chicago, St Josephs, Butler, Gonzaga, Georgetown are in the finals, and many win. Pac12? Yawn. Since John Wooden retired, PAC 12 is a nowhere hoops conference.

    Fire Rose? Stupid idea.

    Uteology

Embarrassing is being a prime contributor to the "conference of ineligible athletes"

    - Arizona and USC are both currently using players who are ineligible
    - Utah has used an ineligible player for 2 of the last 3 seasons

It'll be interesting to see if the PAC 12 does anything to address the problem, or if they'll just sweep it under the rug.

You're seriously trying to equate throwing a jacket on the floor to having to be physically restrained by your assistants from attacking a ref?

Only under that crimson bubble on the hill.

Sometimes Rose seems too docile, but at least he doesn't embarrass his employer by raging at officials and having to be restrained by two assistant coaches.

    ----

He did in the 2015 WCC tournamnet championship game.

Embarrassing is going 18-2 vs sub 150 teams.

Being a successful head coach is like being a successful leader, you need to have a strong leadership team. If you look back to the biggest seasons for BYU it was Coach Rose, Schroyer, and Rice. BYU has a better defense with Schroyer back. LaComb seems to be a nice guy but he is no Dave Rice.

BYU has to find a way to go higher than #3 in the WCC.

The problem is the comparative factor. Average WCC teams are much smaller than the MWC teams which are smaller than the PAC teams - that being said St. Mary's and Gonzaga are amazing teams, particularly Gonzaga, so it's no surprise that BYU struggles to break out of the #3 spot.

Keep in mind that in the MWC Rose had 6 seasons, 4 #1 results (2 outright and 2 tie) and the other two BYU was #2.

Perspective makes BYU look lacking in the WCC - I wonder if we really are, BYU needs to get that #2 spot away from St. Mary's and then things would look better - but for now they really aren't that bad and that's the problem with Rose, certainly better than normal but can BYU live up to previous expectations in a smaller conference where the top teams are basically cemented in position each year?

So what if BYU moves on and fires Rose - I'm not sure that's better, could be a complete disaster.

No doubt BYU has not come up to expectations. Perhaps as pundits say recruiting some foreign players could help, and maybe better recruiting of the US would help too. As for Utah I always thought they were better than BYU so was surprised they lost to BYU. BYU really lacks a center this year and has struggled in most games and will against USD.

I'm really am not advocating that Rose act like the Ute coach. Please no! He is not a great role model at all! The difference between Rose and Lavell is results and player development. Both are lacking with Rose. Coach Rose seems like a good guy and I respect his conduct. I just don't see
top tier results or player development that great programs establish.

“Does anyone really see any drive or passion in coaching from Dave Rose? His assistants are doing most everything.... including the play calling.”

The exact same thing could have been said about LaVell Edwards.

A coach doesn’t have act like a certain coach on the hill in order to be passionate.

Does anyone really see any drive or passion in coaching from Dave Rose? His assistants are doing most everything.... including the play calling. Rose simply paces back and forth with that bewildered perplexed look on his face. Please spare me the often repeated 20 win season montra....against what competition? There are really only two good teams in this league, BYU is not one of them. His teams never improve throughout the year, and many good players choose to leave the program and thrive elsewhere. Its past time for a change in coaching, but sadly..Holmoe can't seem to get the message and seems content with the status quo 3rd place finish and NIT tourney. Very sad for BYU faithful fans and boosters who deserve better.
Nobody really expects this team has any chance at winning the tourney..be honest with yourself and you know that's true. It should be different. Cmmon Holmoe, give us a reason to hope again ..make the change.

This sounds like a great time to shake up the lineup and give guys like Dastrup and Cannon significant playing time. What can it hurt - right? It's time to stop relying entirely on Bryant and Childs to carry the offense. If Rose goes with the usual lineup that will be a dead give away that he just wants to be done with the season.

Sometimes Rose seems too docile, but at least he doesn't embarrass his employer by raging at officials and having to be restrained by two assistant coaches. Rose also doesn't scream obscenities at the head of officiating of his conference after a win. I'll take Rose and his decorum.

    Christy is cherry picking.

Rose hasn’t won a conference tournament championship, but regular season championships won during the Rose era:

    BYU - 4
    Utah - 1

BYU ended up on the short end of the stick… again. Yes San Diego, Pacific and San Francisco all ended up tied with 2 wins and 2 losses against one another, but using the points between themselves solely, as a determining factor of placement, does not adequately address the placement. The WCC should have taken into account the teams ranked above them as to who would be placed 4th, 5th and 6th in the tournament. San Francisco with its win over St. Mary's obviously should have been 4th. San Diego and Pacific with their wins over BYU would be tied in that aspect, but when you take into account the point spread of each game with BYU, San Diego is a clear choice for 5th which leaves Pacific at 6th place. My question is: If it had been St. Mary's or Gonzaga in 3rd place, would they have had the same kind of logic in their tournament selection for 4th, 5th and 6th place. Well… never mind… in a while it won't matter any way. I have a feeling that BYU is going to surprise everyone in this tournament. And, with all the naysayers and their condescending voices… BYU, with their march through the tournament, winning it, will put a cork in it and stop all their yakety yak yak.

I don't know what a "mini-conference" is, but the WCC tournament ends the same week as the PAC 12 tournament ends.

btw, U were dominated by the 3rd place team from the WCC.

You can always tell when the lowly utes from the "Conference of $100,000 Payouts" gets blown out - they come here to grieve and deflect. The real question is - can the utes stay within 10 points of the might 'Buffs. They didn't last time.

Best to worry about your own mediocre team and your own mediocre conference. You have one whole team in the top 25, while the lowly WCC has two. In the end, as pertaining to your team vs. BYU, 77-65 is all you need to know.

Actually Chris and obsessed fans, you are wrong again, but you should be used to that.

Rose as a player was conference champion three times. In the MWC he was conference champion four times. Now unless you are cherry picking and not counting conference championships, but only conference tournament championships......that would be weak.

As an added stat, as a player he was 1st in conference 3 times and as a coach he has been no lower than 3rd in an season and, all but his freshman year as a player, has ended each each in either the NCAA or NIT tournament.

He may be coming to the end of his run, but few have had better in all of college basketball.

Kind of a warm up game/tournament.

    Going 11-7 in a mini is ugly. BUT....it’s a 20 win season...which is nice.

Any team that would consider USD as a "tough...matchup" is a team who had already written off the Big Dance, and trying to decide if they're an "NIT" or a "CBI" team instead.

    Weak SOS.

Rose actually has 4 titles (2 shared 2 outright) as the BYU bb HC. In the WCC he's got 2 2nd places and otherwise it's 3rd place. Not too shabby actually, he finished 1st place 4 of 6 years in the MWC.

Utah did have a tie for 1st place in 08-09 that they share with BYU. But 80K doesn't have any titles.

Maybe you guys should win some titles before talking about how Rose doesn't have any - or at least visit the trophy cases at the marriott center.

Decide if you want to be ironic or inaccurate.

This team tanked down the stretch like they do every year. I have no confidence they can win even one game in the WCC tourney.

I'd look forward to next season but somehow we will lose guys during the offseason like we do every year thus making it another rebuilding year.

Can you imagine if we had retained Mika for another season or if Emery didn't get fouled up and they both played this year?

Looks like a one and out, or two and out at best. If they were unbelievably at their best then 3 and out. To actually win the tournament St. Mary’s and Gonzaga will have to both totally collapse, very unlikely. The Cougars will probably see a NIT invite, and if they go 1 and 1 in Vegas they will most likely host the opening round, simply because they can sell more tickets than anyone else.

I’ll say it again, if BYU wants to make the leap to the next level, they absolutely have to recruit a dominate 7+ footer. Committee of guards with an assortment of forwards will not get you there.
