All of these girl wrestlers are wonderful young women, great students and
gracious. They are warriors.
Fantastic! Wrestling is an awesome sport and experience for any young athlete. I
hope there are more opportunities for young female wrestlers to get started in
the sport and stay active in it. Parents: don’t be afraid to let your
daughters try it out. They can still be princesses, but they were built to
thrive under Spartan conditions or none of us would be here! Don’t confuse
honoring their femininity with pampering or condescension. No other HS sport
compares for developing fitness and courage. If you can get out on the mat in a
singlet in front of the crowd and give it your all, you develop the courage to
do anything in life you need to. It’s also the most egalitarian of sports.
If you can beat the wrestler on your team currently owning your weight class,
you are the new 1st string team member for your weight class. What could be more
fair? Parental lobbying, good old boy systems or coach favorites may be a factor
in other sports, but not in wrestling. We love wrestling in our family but have
watched college wrestling programs dwindle for years. Girls and women may save
this ancient sport. Either way, get out there and grapple!
It is a new world Hilda. emb
