The chief difficulty with "Wonder Wheel" is that the writer (Woody Allen) fails go give his characters many lines that feel right for them. Poor Kate Winslet does the best she can, but almost all of her dialog feels too complicated for real speech. Another problem is that we're trapped with people who spend virtually every minute of the movie bickering with one another, and while they're doing that, the action virtually stops. This grows tedious. Finally, there's simply not a shred of redemption for any of these characters, no sense that anything whatsoever has been "resolved" for them. It's merely a "slice of life" presentation, but a good film needs to give us some real sense of something purposive. Woody Allen usually provides that, but not here. This seems to me his poorest effort in many years.
