Utes' three-year reign of Ray Guy Award winners ends with Texas punter taking honor
From this BYU fan to Mr. Gay: Congratulations! I hope you have an awesome year
next year and make every field goal and PAT you attempt, except when we play
@johninslcHe knows tds hasn't hijacked every shade of that color for
every application.---------------Sez the fan of the team
who can't make up their minds on what their base color should be (grey?
black? crimson red? sparkly/glittery red? white?) Typical ute hypocrisy.Better hope your equipment managers don't wash all the uniforms
together or you'll end up with them all being a dingy dull pink color.
Congrats to Matt for the award. He had a great season.Utah is
rapidly becoming Kicker and Punter U! Having some kicking and punting trophies
will help fill the empty spaces in their trophy case.
@Christine B. Hedgefog - Salt Lake City, UT... the true irony is
that the little red engine that could wouldn't get near the opportunity to
showcase a good kicking game if their offense wasn't so perenially
inept.---------------The true "iorny" is of
Sitke had allowed him to walk on at BYU, he still would not have won the award
with the MOST "inept" offense in the nation.Congrats Matt on
the award!Go UTES!
John in Cottonwood Heights and HK in Holladay - Ya, BYU sucks, and the inept red
offense beat the worst team in the world by 6 points, one of 6 victories against
not a single great team. Tell us something we don't already know. That
isn't the point of this article, nor any of the comments.Neither of your "I know you are but what am I" comments changes the
truthfulness of my comment about the perennial ineptness of the offense at the
little red engine that could. and the irony of that being a major contributing
factor to the crimson kicking game having so much opportunity to showcase
it's talents year in and year out.
Well deserved! Congrats!
Utah's returning special teams for 2018:Matty Ice: 2017 Lou
Groza Award winnerMitch Wishnowsky: 2016 Ray Guy Award winnerBritain
"Too Short" Covey: 2015 Freshman PR All-AmericanAnd - Utah
has a long-snapper "specialist" - a la Chase Dominguez - coming in
(sorry Alex and Harrison, but Mat and Mitch were good this year in spite of
you)."Special" teams indeed!Go Utes!!
@downunder“It is a little bit scary when your kicker is the best
player on your team. Not sure what it says about the ability of the offense to
score TD's”How is it scary to have the best kicker in the
country your best player? (at their position, I assume you mean, as a kicker
could never be the best overall football player on a team). When Nate Orchard
got the Hendricks award for best D End in the nation, he was our best player, as
a D End... How could you possibly prove to be better than a guy that was
literally named the BEST in the nation at their position? Unless you win the
Heisman, it’s not even possible.
"the true irony is that the little red engine that could wouldn't get
near the opportunity to showcase a good kicking game if their offense
wasn't so perenially inept."Says the fan of a team whose
offense was close to dead last in all of college football.
It is a little bit scary when your kicker is the best player on your team. Not
sure what it says about the ability of the offense to score TD's.
I would rather have seen TD's in the red zone but I guess a field goal is
points. If our offense would have been better we probably would not be .500 and
would not have needed Gay to be a hero.Either way congrats to Gay
for a great season.
"if their offense wasn't so perenially inept."hedgehog:Not so inept that, when we play your team, we have any
trouble scoring more points than your (choose one): a) "go fast go hard"
offense, or b) "new sheriff-Ty 'Freaking' Detmer" offense.
No question, the little red engine that could has become a great place for good
kickers (both punters and field goal kickers) to flourish. While
others have to keep pointing out the 'irony' of all readers of the
DesNews who comment on articles from many schools around the area - the true
irony is that the little red engine that could wouldn't get near the
opportunity to showcase a good kicking game if their offense wasn't so
Congrats Matt. Great job all year. Super Gay!
Wow. This is great for Matt and Utah football. Utah seems to be getting all
the best players from Utah county over the past several years (Gay, Covey, etc.)
@Riddles in the Dark Wrote:"LOL at the constant BYU obsession
of johnny, even on an article that has absolutely nothing to do with
BYU."Actually it does have something to do with BYU. Matt tried
out for BYU first and they turned him down. They weren't even willing to
give him a chance as a walk-on. And here he is accepting an award as the top
place-kicker in the country. I must confess that I chuckled, chortled and
generally guffawed at the irony of it all.
Wallbanger"Says the Cougar "fan" ON a Utah article that
does indeed have nothing to do with BYU!Says another Ute
"fan" who HAD to talk about BYU, before mentioning Utah.Oh the irony!
Congrats Matt! You're a terrific kicker!
The "blue suit" is for Sitake and special teams coach Lamb at BYU who
didn't think he was good enough to be a Cougar or more accurately
wasn't one of "their guys" to make it in Provo. BYU's lost,
Mat Gay and Utah's win! Congrats #33Utah Man you earned it!! Continued

see you do even better next year.
Great Job Matt, I was hoping you would get this award. I don't care what
you wear, blue is my second favorite color too.
Congrats Matt on a great individual honor! Utah has had some amazing kickers
during the Whittingham era.-----------------LOL at the
constant BYU obsession of johnny, even on an article that has absolutely nothing

"What is with the blue suit and tie?"Close:He

Hearty congratulations to Matt Gay, a truly fantastic story. However, more work
needs to be done for next year. He missed 4 field goals all year. The area for
improvement was Matt missed 3 of those 4 against 3 of the 4 toughest teams Utah
played (Stanford - lost by 3, USC - lost by 1and Washington State - lost by
8).The field goal he missed in the USC is burnt in my memory. Why?
I flew the Mrs. and me to LA from Michigan for the game. Deep in enemy (USC)
territory, I was talking up Matt proclaiming him the best kicker in the country,
then he missed the 34 yarder. It was likely because of that miss, Whittingham
took a delay of game penalty later in the game to do a punt instead of having
Matt attempt a 47 yarder. Making that 34 yarder, his only miss under 40 yards,
would have had a dramatic effect on how that game ended.Matt Gay is
very good, but he needs to be great to make it to the next level.
Go Utah! The Utes have had incredible luck over the past decade or so
in the kicker's they've been able to get. We used to think King Louie
couldn't be excelled. But Matt Gay and Mitch Wishnowsky have clearly
demonstrated the contrary.Congratulations to those two outstanding
athletes, and to the University of Utah football program!I'm
sure that there is or are some specialty coach or coaches that are unsung in
this article and these awards. Big thanks, whoever you are, who have helped
these young men optimize their talents!
Close Talker:What's your point? You wanted him in a red suit?
Congratulations Matt really proud of you! What is with the blue suit and tie?
Congratulations to Gay! His is really an amazing story, starting as a walk-on
and ending the season as the best kicker in the country. Well done!
