@Poyman You forget they failed miserably in early season when they were much
more healthy - like games 1 through 5 with an experience QB. Can't get
past the 50 yard line against LSU. Come on many
"Then I'm going to ask Heisman Ty to think about coming to USU where he
will be treated with dignity and respect for the nice man he is."Sep 29/30, 1989, while doing grad studies at BYU, I took a group of Boy Scouts
camping up Logan Canyon, then to the BYU-USU football game. Ty Detmer was just
coming into his own as the BYU QB that season. Early in the second half, the
undersized QB had already proven to be the dominate force on the field. He
threw a long pass down the right sideline, which had everyone's attention
focused on the result ... until everyone looked back and saw two Aggie players
holding Ty on the ground swinging their fists at him. The benches immediately
cleared.I don't believe that action to be typical of all USU
players or fans. But I don't think Ty has fond memories of "dignity
and respect" at Logan and USU. Keep thinking positively, though!
"... Love Detmer, but he had these guys going in the wrong
direction."******************There's not a coach in the
land that could have had "the guys" going in the right direction with a
5th string Freshman QB, all RBs injured and using a 6th string QB as your main
RB, a WR group that is and was probably the worst that this Program has had
since the early 70's, numerous injuries on both sides of the ball, etc. Put
that load on any 2nd year OC and the results would be the same. Detmer had to
end up coaching recruits that he didn't make... Yet he's held
accountable for their inability to perform? Please.Holmoe and Sitake
have messed this Program up big time... Mendenhall saw this coming under
Holmoe's leadership and he bolted... Good move for him. The recruiting
classes he left were weak however.Holmoe should have been gone in
2011 and now I suspect that both Sitake and Holmoe will eventually be leaving
Provo (sooner rather than later) without a legacy or even a job. They
have managed to sever the our main tie to Texas recruits... There is not a HS QB
recruit that is going to be happy signing in with this bunch unless he is a 2
star or a low 3 star.
Couple of things were at issue at least from what I understand from those close
to the program... Players were not doing what Ty was asking them to do. Where
all the moving parts have to do what has been designed, when players unplug, it
falls apart. Also, the reformulating the offense based on ever changing players
moving in and out of the revolving injury door. Ty was the scapegoat. Poor
decision to relieve him instead of help him at this early stage. There will not
be a quick fix here. If after a good four years, and the offense still sucks,
you need to do it. But 2 yrs is way too soon to pull the plug. BYU is on a
bad trajectory. If I was a top recruit, there is no way I would play at the Y.
No way. Nothing to play for.
Oh No! The sky is falling! Actually, there is plenty to be optimistic about.
We have some very great transfers coming in. The OL and DL will be better.
Remember we have the superman Hoge on the OL coming from Notre Dame, Kirby from
OSU and a bunch of others. And sorry to say, our offense will be much better
going forward. No way will it be worse. It cannot be any worse than the
bottom of the NCAA Division I. Love Detmer, but he had these guys going in the
wrong direction. Most of the skill players are back. Plenty of reason for
optimism because the only direction possible is up in my opinion. And Sitake is
a great recruiter. You will see.
Neomotololo should have been made Head Coach 2 years ago, and Ainge should have
been made AD years ago... and both should have been paid what they would command
on the open market. Both Holmoe and Sitake are apprentices... perhaps
some day Sitake can mature into a Journeyman HC... Holmoe should be long
gone. Both appear to be good people, but their Resume and ability to
achieve results simply aren't there.
BYU's Football Program appears to be in free fall... Holmoe and Sitake had
to know that this would happen when they made the decision to make Detmer the
scapegoat.Holmoe for sure, and possibly even Sitake need to be given
walking papers. This is a very tough time to be a "proud and
happy" cougar fan. Holmoe had both the FB Program and the BB Programs (both
men and women) in a steep decline. It's time that the President of the
University does his job and make some changes at the top of the Department.
Bomar, your right. He will go to Stanford, People forget one of the top Coaches
at Stanford, is a Active LDS Coach. He has actually recruited some very
talented LDS kids in the last 8 years(Including Tayosm Hill). He was even in
the running to be offered the BYU HC job.
Tanner McKee will not sign with the Cougars, a bit of information is he's
90% Stanford with Texas and Washington next in line. Only hope is he changes his
mind during his mission.
I was so looking forward to Greg and Mark doing their broad cast with Zadock
Dinklemann as the starting QB.I like the name Zadock Dinklemann.I think Zadock Dinklemann would have been on the all name team at
BYU.I hope Zadock Dinklemann finds a good landing spot after
decommitting from BYU.
For those fans of you who think losing Detmer cost you Zadock, perhaps you
should look at it through another lens: as in were it not for the fact that
Detmer was Zadock's uncle, he never would have even LOOKED at the whY? Now we're about to find out how true cougnation's claims that
it was Zadock who'd backed away from LSU, rather than the other way around.
If LSU offers him again, then that would have validated it. But if they do
NOT, then that would just confirm what I'd long suspected: LSU backed off
of HIM!And for the record, as of today, LSU has no QBs committed to
their 2018 class.
Detmer had to run his offense without a healthy quarterback and ended up using a
fifth string freshman. He never had a healthy running back all season and ended
the year using a quarterback at running back. The rest of his offense was
decimated by injuries and he was running his offense with players he didn't
recruit. Detmer got the shaft and Sitake just lost oneof the top
quarterback recruits in the country--probably one who could actually run
Detmer's offense. BYU will be lucky to win four games next year and then
maybe they will give Sitake's job to Detmer, who probably should have had
it in the first place.
I'm writing Mr. Detmer a letter apologizing at how he was treated. I guess
what do you expect from BYU though. Then I'm going to ask
Heisman Ty to think about coming to USU where he will be treated with dignity
and respect for the nice man he is. He would do well with the Aggie offense and
I bet he would enjoy playing BYU after how he was treated. That would be
Bluto - Sandy, UTDec. 5, 2017 6:32 p.m.@Aggie Andee"USU has surpassed BYU in football".LOL Will
never happen.BYU draws 55-60k for home games, even in bad years....Aggieville draws 18k._____So the more attendance, the better
a team is overall?Geez. Michigan and Ohio State should be winning the
national title every other year.
This announcement is no surprise. Wish Zadock well wherever he ends up.
@Aggie Andee "USU has surpassed BYU in football".LOL Will never happen.BYU draws 55-60k for home games, even
in bad years....Aggieville draws 18k.
Bluto: “The inability to remove lineman who aren't cutting it, was

depth.DeanVtrc: "This happens almost every time there is a
major coaching change. BYU will likely receive a committ from the connections of
whom ever they hire as the new OC."What kind of
“commit” is a new OC from the likes of Snow College going to bring
with him? Detmer certainly didn’t bring anyone along from that tiny HS he
came from. In relevant programs this is true. Sadly, USU has now surpassed
Wow. What a lot of great advice. Naturally, Coach Sitake pours over these
comments for ideas and advice. He'd be a fool not to. And it is free
advice, too. Here is my advice, Coach. Don't read any of these comments.
@roboSeriously? You don’t think Detmer shoulders any blame for the
horrific performance by the offense this year? All the bad decisions and all the
bad play calls were Sitake’s? Really? Seeing how ineffective Mangum was
this year, naming Hill the starter was the right call last year, which was
indeed Detmer’s call, one of the few good decisions he made.I’m on the fence as to the decision to fire Detmer this year or give him
one more year to redeem himself. However once the decision was made, Sitake
should have fired the receivers coach and the DC also. The defense was NOT good
So many of the comments here are shocking to me. To blame Holmoe, or even
Sitake, for the offense's lack of production defies logic. Every single
offensive play was called by Detmer. The play designs were Detmer's.
Detmer was the QB coach as well. After two years as OC, Detmer never did get
BYU to the point where they could efficiently pass the ball. Don't you
wonder why Taysom Hill's passing ability has now impressed two NFL head
coaches, but never worked under Detmer? Haven't you wondered why Tanner
Magnum regressed from his freshman year? Sitake didn't want to have to
fire Detmer. They're close friends. But he had to do it to save the
program. The criticism for not firing him would have been 10 times worse than
what he's receiving now from the "blame it on Holmoe or Sitake"
crowd. How else is he supposed to " handle it"? Can anyone name a
single college football coach who thinks it was a mistake to fire Detmer?
Ty's a great guy who, if he stays in coaching long enough, will eventually
gain the knowledge necessary to be a college OC. It takes years to learn how to
do it, regardless of your background as a player or high school coach.
When will all this Detmer hand wringing end? I feel bad that it didn't
work out for him, but that's just the way it goes.
This is proof ty will be leaving byu. Keeping ty as qb coach was huge. This was handled horribly.
@Bluto Are you certain that was Detmer's call? I suspect
Sitake determined who was going to be on the field, and Detmer had to live with
it, just as I think Sitake mandated they stick with Hill all last year. I could
be wrong. but it's folly to believe Detmer had complete control over
everything involving the offense. I think Sitake is the problem; it's
clear from this situation and looking back at his past comments and attitude
that he never believed in Detmer's offense. No way all the head scratchers
are attributed to Detmer. For example: who decided to go for it on 4th and
forever in the face of their own end zone? Sitake is a FB, turned defensive
coach, that thinks like a lineman. Not a recipe for offensive success. Diehard
Cougar fan, but not a fan of BYU football anymore, likely as long as Sitake is
in charge. Absolutely disgraceful how he handled this.
Carnak - BYU fans and reality have a nodding acquaintance, at the best of times.
Right now they pass one another on the street as perfect strangers. . .
Son, sorry you feel the need to decommit - but if Ty Detmer was there for
another season, I don't think there would be a team left to come play
for. That was the most embarrassing football I've ever
I believe its critical for BYU to name a new OC promptly. With the new early
signing period, they can't afford to wait.
@ConradWell, to inspire folks like you and some who are not like
you.I presume I am entitled to express my opinion just as you and
all other posters are? Well, on the other hand, maybe not.😁
I agree that deter had to go, but I also agree that this has not been handled
very well. Nothing from Sitaki since the firing. Holmoe has developed a very
disturbing culture at BYU.
So many opinions, so little knowledge.Someone actually thinks Holmoe
took us into independence? As a knee jerk reaction? It was actually a
decision that took well over 1 year to decide and Holmoe was not the final
decision maker. Several issues were involved and debated.A terrible
offense from the first game to the last. Anemic, inept, and boring. Love
Detmer, but he was responsible for the Offense and he did not deliver.Did Sitake call Detmer into his office one day and tell him he was out? And
Detmer had no clue it was coming? Or did they have conversations over a period
of time and arrived at a mutually agreed upon decision? Don't know.
Neither does anyone else who posts here.Verbal commitments are one
of the dopier things in college sports. All it does is give a program a
"maybe" while trying to discourage other schools from coming after a
certain recruit. Backing out of a commitment is so common that it is hardly
worth reporting. Especially when schools get kids to commit in 8th grade.Holmoe has presided over a consistently top 30 - 40 athletic program in
terms (out of over 300 schools) of athletic achievement each year. He is doing
better than good.
Facts are facts...Detmer was clueless in calling plays and running
an effective offense.-Leaving Mangum as the starter after the 2nd
game was his first mistake.-The inability to remove lineman who
aren't cutting it, was another.-Receivers who can't catch a ball
when hitting them in the hands is another.Sorry, I love Detmer, but
the critics were correct....Experience matters.Throw out the whole
lot, save for Sitake and retool.Central Florida won two games two
years ago...They're 12-0 this year. The sky is not falling, Cougs will
. . .and the dumpster fire continues to burn quietly as fuel is added,
What's not being addressed in these comments is this his 2nd de-commit. Is
he going to commit and then de-commit when another coach is fired? When he gets
to a school is he going to transfer if a coach is fired?
The problem isn't the coach. It's the AD. Recruiting players will
be harder. Recruiting good coaching staff nearly impossible. The only person
that should have stepped down, didn't. He has done good with the other
sports (actually Basketball is looking a little anemic too)..... the most
visible sport is languishing. Yes, it is only one season. But
if it was bad enough to blame Detmer.... then it is bad enough to look at the
man the created the situation.
Firing Detmer 2 days after the end of the season was a hasty, panicked knee-jerk
reaction. byu football is known for panicking and making knee-jerk decisions.
So the athletic director at BYU decides to take the program into independence,
he sets up "challenging" schedules for a team that year after year deals
with a deteriorating recruiting class (because of independence) and sees
mounting loses, looses the head coach who says that independence is "not
sustainable", fires an icon of the program - the one who brought the heisman
trophy to the program, and now is facing de-commits of recruits. How long can BYU go down this destructive road? The brand suffers, the
purpose of exposure is diminished, and the ability to restore this program
becomes more and more improbable. Why does BYU allow Holmoe to make
scapegoats of others when he is the one who has presided over this decline? It
is past time for changes to be made at the administrative level.
Sitake needs to go!! Better to have someone in place who respects and builds
upon the things that make BYU unique. BYU football will be better off with
someone who believes in a culture of personal accountability and hard work and
not entitlement and favoritism. #culturematters
The problem was never Mr. Detmer. The problem runs much deeper at BYU and
that's why USU has surpassed BYU in football. I wonder who will collect
the blame next year when BYU loses to the Aggies and fails to reach a bowl once
again. The fall guy was BYU's Heisman winner this year who is a
"I would reinstate Ty Detmer as OC as quickly as possible"...
Seriously? What would Kalani say?"Hey Ty, we were just
kidding. Come back, I didn't mean to fire you in the first place... what
was I thinking? My bad. No really, come on down."
Terrible, terrible decision to fire Detmer after only 2 seasons, only ONE of
which was bad. (No, fellow Cougar fans, his 9-4 season was not
"bad".)I lost a TON of respect for Sitake over this. A ton.
I've been a big supporter of Sitake but the way he and BYU (and I include
fans too) have handled Detmer has been classless and disappointing. You
don't fire your only Heisman winner and if you do, you have to have a plan
for both him and you to save face. The only hope BYU has now is its recruiting
pipeline and if you destroy that, you truly have nothing.I've
known some recruits the past 1-2 years and having Detmer come to your house was
a big deal. For the peanuts BYU pays its assistants, they coulda kept him in
some role. This is just sad and pointless.
TO: Herbert Gravy - Salinas, CAThen why are you commenting?
I wish Ty Detmer and Zaddock the very best. It just didn't work. There's an old saying,Those that can do Those that can't
teach.Sometimes those that can, can't teach.
Dinkleman or no Dinkleman making Ty Detmer a scapegoat was a horrible decision.
For BYU to be great they must return to the fitness, timing, passing offense
which Doug Scovil brought to Provo. It works well when athletes who are
disciplined on the field are in Provo. These are the types of Athletes BYU gets.
I would reinstate Ty Detmer as OC as quickly as possible and bring in someone
else to help with the organization of the offense. It is the right thing to do.
Detmer would never leave a program he loves to go to a school that hates his
Alma Mater and has zero tradition. Keep dreaming. And he was
treated well at BYU, are you kidding? He just couldn't cut it as a first
time OC. Of course recruits change their minds in situations like
these. I love how the haters assume the worst. Please go pay attention to your
own teams and their awful seasons and how to fix those broken teams. Good grief.
Still haven't heard from our head coach, Sitake. Pretty disappointing.
You make a move you should have the courage to face the heat. The biggest
problem we had last year was leadership. Our head coach is not a leader. He
can't and doesn't lead during adversity. I hope he is gone after next
year, which is a pretty safe bet.
It was a bad move to fire Detmer. I'm losing confidence in Sitake...
Aggie Andree you can have Detmer just as long as you take the whole losing
season along with youth USU. Because thats what you get with Detmer.
So glad most of us have "bigger fish to fry" than worrying about the
next great quarterback at BYU.😁
We are going to be so loaded at quarterback over the next 3-4 years that this
will have little significant impact.
I want to see Ty Detmer and his nephew head up to USU where both of them will
get treated much better than they were in Provo.
This happens almost every time there is a major coaching change. BYU will likely
receive a committ from the connections of whom ever they hire as the new OC.
Players usually go where they have some relationship with coaches or other
players. Clearly a loss for BYU but we have a few others in the pipe line. Best
wishes to Zadock wherever he goes....
For all you Cougar fans that thought you could fire your OC and yet keep the guy
as your QB coach, time to wake up - reality is calling.
