Why are all of my fellow Utes so distracted by the BYU trolls? Our fans tout the fact that we have won 7 in a row against BYU, but those same fans will also be quick to remind everyone that BYU is a mid-major and not a P5 school. I honestly don't care about BYU and hope that they are successful in whatever it is they are trying to accomplish. My focus is on what it will take to make Utah a better team.

Utah needs to get better. Period. That is not going to happen under KWhitt. We have a losing record in the PAC-12 since joining the conference and have never won a PAC-12 championship. We haven't even made it to the championship game....ever. We struggle at the QB position on a regular basis and haven't found an OC who lasts more than a season or two. Yes, we win our bowl games, but so do 41 other teams in the country each year. I want something better. I want to win the PAC, and I want people outside of this state to recognize that Utah is a force to be reckoned with. And that, my friends, will not happen until we get a real P5 coach.

    @Rockwell
And, let's not forget, in 2012 and 2013 you played in the same bowl that BYU is playing in this year,

    ------------

    With one MAJOR difference:

    * Utah played a real schedule
    * BYU was 3-5 vs Bo Diddly Tech (see ECU, UMass, USU).

    2017 4-9 BYU (SOS #73) ... 3-5 vs G5

    2013 5-7 Utah (SOS #3) ... 3-0 vs G5

    2014 5-7 Utah (SOS #41) .. 2-1 vs G5 (lost in OT vs #16 USU)

    Sooner Ute

Cougar fans have unreasonable expectations for their program, and your question projects that craziness onto the Utes. Cougar fans presume that they'd just waltz to the top of any conference. A more realistic question is "why hasn't your team won the WCC?"

    ----------------

Since joining the conference, BYU has won more conference championships than any other team in the WCC, just like they did in the WAC and MWC.

Last year, BYU has won its fifth-consecutive West Coast Conference Commissioner’s Cup in six years in the league.

In 2016-17, BYU won six outright and two shared conference titles, as well as the men’s all-sport, women’s all-sport and overall cups.

As far as men's basketball is concerned, remind us how well Utah has done against Gonzaga and Saint Mary's since Utah joined the PAC 12.

If the WCC is such a weak men's basketball conference, why has Utah been dominated in post season play every time they've played a WCC team?

DeepBlue: "Utah has only won FIVE conference championships since 1965."

JohnInSLC: "All five were won since 1995"

Still doesn't change the fact that the Utes had a THIRTY year drought, in the WAC, no less, in which the Utes didn't win a single conference championship.

And, let's not forget, BYU has won TWICE as many conference championships during the Whittingham era, as Utah.

Juice Box - "why can't Utah win conference championships when we are one of the best at putting players in the NFL."
Because the rest of the PAC 12 is pretty good at getting players drafted by the NFL too - 36 players last year. You act as if Utah was the only team with NFL talent. 8 players drafted was a school record, but it wasn't "miles ahead" of USC, UCLA, and Washington, each with 5 players drafted.

Cougar fans have unreasonable expectations for their program, and your question projects that craziness onto the Utes. Cougar fans presume that they'd just waltz to the top of any conference. A more realistic question is "why hasn't your team won the WCC?" That was a step down in competition. You should have dominated that league every year.

All five were won since 1995, one less than BYU-P won in that period.

The difference? Utah is in a conference and competes for a championship every year. BYU-P hasn't won a championship since 2007 (Utah won its last championship in 2008), and never will again.

    Nope,

BYU has won TWENTY-THREE conference championships in the same time period.

Utah has only won 11+ games TWICE in their entire history.

BYU has won 11+ games ELEVEN times, THREE times since 2006.

    To Juice Box:

I will attempt to answer your question directly. Utah can't win the South even with it's stellar record of taking guys to the NFL. Why? I honestly believe Utah's coaching can't take them there. I think Whittingham's a great guy and everything, but being totally objective I cannot seem to conjure up a reason to keep Whittingham. I do believe he has merit as a defensive genius though. He has done a fine job getting the program to a competitive level, but cannot seem to break through.

By the way, I'm not a fan of either Utah or BYU. Stating my opinion here, I think you make a great point. With all of this talent, Utah needs to win the PAC 12 south title once in a while. Utah's NFL numbers are among the best in the country as of late. They were tied for 4th in school with most 1st round picks last year. Only short of Alabama, Michigan, and Miami.

Utah was basically inches away from winning the south last year in losses to Cal and Oregon. I'm loyal to a good coach. Hiring and firing doesn't work; ask Tennessee, UCLA, etc. I would say my position is in the majority; yours in the minority.

I on other hand definitely support my coach and with out a doubt want to see what he can do next year. As far as winning a championship goes; last year Utah was about 6 inches away from beating both Oregon and Cal. You seem to forget that. Juice is right on and his fellow Ute fans can't stand the accurate analysis. His comment about Ute fans being satisfied with 'moral victories" is a due to a culture that'd been established because of BYU's long time dominance. To ute fans, beating BUY "makes" their season. I think that includes their head coach. It's why Utah fans cannot understand why BYU fan's are hyper critical and have over the top expectations for their team . Ute fans see that as arrogance, when in fact, it's a result of an expectation of excellence. As nearly every Ute fan post validates regarding expectations by their team and especially their coach, they have not gotten there yet. They are satisfied with just being in the PAC and being ranked. As I've stated before, the big time programs, those that have grabbed the brass ring, don't settle for average or even above average, that is why team like UCLA gets rid of coaches that don't consistently compete for Conference Championships. I know the U sent a lot of linemen to the pros from last year's team, but I was disappointed with the line play on both sides of the ball. Opponents seemed to get a lot of first downs on 3rd and long and our Quarterbacks were often running for their lives.

There are no moral victories. In four tough games Utah was beat by the better team. In six games Utah was the better team. In two games Utah did not show up.

Utah returns 80% of their team. Taylor's offense will be better in year two. Many two's got playing experience this year due to injury. Utah has the 15 extra practices which will be invaluable to training the young talent.

Change the "we" to "U", but the question remains:

If U are one of the best teams in the PAC 12 putting players into the NFL, why aren't U winning conference championships? Why didn't U do it last year with all your NFL talent?

    The answer is obvious:

    Last year was an anomaly.

USC, UCLA, Stanford, Oregon, and Washington always out recruit Utah, and always will.

Sure, Utah might beat ONE of them in a given recruiting class, but over a four-year stretch, Utah will NEVER out recruit any of them.

Sure, Utah might upset one or two of the big boys in a given season, but over an entire season, you'll lose as many or more games to the Arizonas, Washington States, and Oregon States of the PAC 12, as your occasional upsets of the big boys.

The little red engine that couldn't, will always be a perennial also ran in the PAC 12.

Even in your best season ever in the PAC 12, 2015, U still finished with a losing record versus the PAC 12 South.

In this case, "we" refers to the general Utah fan base. Obviously not including every single fan.

"And if we are one of the best teams in the PAC 12 putting players into the NFL, why aren't we winning conference championships? Why didn't we do it last year with all our NFL talent?"

    toojuiced:

Who is the WE you speak of? Did BYU-P's miserable season really push you out the door and up to the Hill? Or are you just flying the 'false flag' of fan-hood? Both have become popular in Provo.

    JohnInSLC,

Isn't it weird that Utah fans gave Cougar fans a hard time for the "margin of defeat" comments? And yet, here we are doing the exact some thing? I find it odd. And if we are one of the best teams in the PAC 12 putting players into the NFL, why aren't we winning conference championships? Why didn't we do it last year with all our NFL talent? Or the year before that?

Utah has apparently been in a rebuilding year since 2008. Every off season it's: We will be deeper next year. This happens every single year. I get that you can't win every game and I don't expect them to. But if Whitt is being payed a Top 25 salary and is one of the best at putting players in the NFL, he needs to be putting up conference titles from time to time. He isn't paid to put players in the NFL.

Top 25 finishes are moral victories since there are 4 playoff spots that need to be filled.

"But Utah fans will be happy with margin of defeat"

    toojuiced:

That's a strange indictment coming from a coog fan. You guys will spend a whole year celebrating your own margin of defeat, telling us how "close" BYU-P was to Utah.

I'm certainly not happy with those losses, but before the season most Ute fans were realistic enough (unlike coog fans, who were predicting a 10+ win "special season") to expect that the Utes might struggle being competitive when replacing so much NFL talent and adjusting to yet another OC. But they were competitive in 10 games and showed offensive progress. Speaking for myself, I'm more optimistic than I am dejected.

    To Juice Box,

In a year where experience was lacking in several key positions, of course some of us are satisfied with the result even while hoping for and expecting better next year. For those not playing or coaching, football is about entertainment, and the Utes have certainly provided that.

Sure, I want them to do better, but I also realize just how little my wants have to do with how a team performs, regardless of who is coaching. I suspect the Utes will be much improved next year, and even if they don't make the conference championship game, they will certainly provide good entertainment.

They need to improve big time with Chip Kelly being the new kid on the block. Still waiting to see about ASU's new coach.

But Utah fans will be happy with margin of defeat and Top 25 finishes. Some are even happy about simply being bowl eligible in the couch potato bowl. These are the biggest moral victory indicators out there. So Whitt won't have to worry too much.

What counts? PAC 12 Titles! Or at the very least appearances in the PAC 12 championship game! The culture here needs to shift from complacency to a thirst for excellence.

Whittingham is lucky to have tenure at Utah. If coached anywhere else in the Pac-12 South - he would be on the street. Jim Mora and Todd Graham can attest to that.

The Utes are close! We lost 3 games to 3 very good teams by a total of 7 points, and another one by 8 points. Here is one fan that has faith in the team and coaching staff to move the needle this coming year against their competition in the PAC-12 and have a much better outcome! Momentum for next year starts now! Let's do it Utes!
