Christy B"Unfortunately, a rash of injuries, and a couple of
unexpected departures, decimated the team that BYU fans expected BYU to
field."----------It is indeed unfortunate. And that's
exactly what Utah fans have been trying to get BYU fans to understand... that
strength of schedule isn't just a convenient excuse, it's a huge
challenge keeping a team healthy and having the depth required to survive a P5
schedule. BYU played a partial P5 schedule and how'd that go? Do you think
they perhaps pick up a few more wins against the soft part of their schedule
(VERY soft) if they played LSU, Wisconsin and Mississippi State at the end of
the year versus the front end?BYU fans would like to think their team is
stronger than the mid to low end teams in P5 conferences yet they haven't
had any idea what it's like to play the schedule Iowa State plays, Oregon
State plays, Minnesota plays, etc. The truth is that those teams when fully
healthy would likely beat fully healthy BYU 8 out of 10 times.2017=BYU

going to accept whatever happens regardless of the results.
2BWhat's Utah's excusefor losing 6 of their
last 7 and for being on the brink of their third losing,
bowl less season in the last six seasons?Choose all the apply1. Inexperience2. Poor coaching3. No talent4. Injuries5. Incompetence
There are a lot of cool Ute fans, Spokane for example is generally on topic and
pretty fair on his remarks - and then there are the trolls like 2BCSwins.BYU's injuries didn't primarily come against high school
teams, if you actually follow football rather than trolling anything and
everything BYU you'll notice that the start of the season was a pretty
tough schedule, and the majority of the injuries happened then.BYU
is down, very down, and Utah has a mediocre at best outcome as well.Utah was 6 points better than BYU, Boise State, Utah State, East Carolina,
Fresno, and UMass are equal or bigger winners than Utah. Both teams
are finding a new style and path forward - both should improve, both needed a
better offense to move forward.Best of luck to both teams, despite

@ekuteYou guys have been hoping for seven straight years. I know, I know,
you lost 10,543 players to the NFL and this year is not as good of year, but
you'll still lose about 753 to the NFL. Then we have the SOS, and the fact
Hundley was hurt, and coach Whit isn't very smart, and we should of beat
USC and Washington...and the beat goes on.
@Blue Husky/Marked it down/Christy B/Rockwell.........Comments about
injury excuses is so funny literally LOL reading each of your posts. You
honestly think other teams don't deal with injuries? You're absolutely
clueless injuries have played havoc on Utah this season. Only
difference Utah don't make excuses about it no matter how many guys out due
to injury, lost to the NFL, etc. Don't matter it's next guy up go out
and compete no matter what. Injury excuses when playing highschool
team schedule all of October and November LOL! Try dealing with guys out due to
injury while playing PAC 12 schedule.
After reading all the smack from ute partisans mocking the BYU-UH game, all I
can say is Go Buffs! (Don't make yourself give up 5th in the PAC 12 South
just because that's utah's traditional finish; let them be 6th this
All things considered it's actually nice to finish at such a warm weather
venue with evenly matched teams. To consider this comparable to a bowl game is
just silly though. To see my friend Kalarney busting on Utah fans, for doing the
same thing he's doing, is quite comical though. All the while he's on
the Utah threads taking shots. Whatever. Consider the sourceFinish
strong Cougs; and regroup for next year. A tough season any way you cut it. It
happens. Good Luck on the Island.

football. At this time I don't feel the Y will ever catch the U unless we
are invited to a major conference. If that happens, we shall leave them far
behind. Again, my opinion._____How is joining a
conference going to improve BYU recruiting? All the same hurdles remain in
place. Not going to happen.
Yes, this "bowl game" can be coined the Toilet Bowl, Ineptitude Bowl,
Turkey Bowl, etc. But the good news is that it is guaranteed to live up to all
the hype. Two very evenly matched teams, a great venue, and attractive
cheerleaders are all on the line. It should be like a train wreck - I
don't want to watch, but I probably can't resist and will peek at it
@mightymite - "Based on rumors abound it is a very real possibility that
ESPN does not renew the TV contract. With that money gone and a dismal
recruiting class the future is looking very bleak. The very future of the
program is in balance here."The ONLY such rumors are from
BYU-hating Utah fans who desperately fantasize about the demise of BYU
I guess its also a defacto Super Bowl, Spaghetti Bowl, Crossing of the Red Sea,
visit to Disney Land or whatever else anyone wants to ascribe to it.

Still don't understand why so many comments are a comparison of the Cougs
and Utes. The Utes won this year, like they've done too many times the
past decade, end of comparison. Still don't like the Utes, and probably
never will,I've only been disappointed 2X as a fan of BYU -
Crowton's 2nd year and Sitake's 2nd year. I'm hopeful that
Sitake's 3rd year won't be like Crowton's 3rd year. I still believe Sitake is the right person for the job, but big changes need
to be made in the off season to ensure we don't have another losing season.
I believe we were more talented than at least 4 of the teams we lost to this
year, which means we need to addresses coaching, effort, execution.
As someone who lived on Oahu for 4 years (Laie, Kaneohe, and Manoa), this should
be a fun game, and will undoubtedly be the best attended UH game of the year.
The older UH fans remember BYU well from the old days when both teams were
pretty solid, and there are a lot of BYU fans on the islands, plenty of recruits
from Hawaii, along with plenty of other connections between the two schools.
Heck, there were handful of BYU transfers on the UH team in just our ward in
Manoa! I expect a good turnout for both fan-bases, and both teams
should have plenty of local pride to play for, despite both having poor seasons.
Should be fun to watch.

A shout out to all those who commented without complaining, accusing, judging,

Stop with the bowl game nonsense. This is the last game in a very forgettable
year - nothing more.
Run the ball - run the ball - run the ball. Did I mention run the ball? Oh,
one other thing - don't call timeout with 22 seconds left in the game.
at long last. . ."The censors evidently won't allow my

"tongue in cheek", because ALL of the comments made by BYU fans about
the BYU-Hawaii game being BYU's "bowl game", were said with tongue
firmly planted in cheek. As far as the D-News headline, you obviously
don't understand that headlines are written purely to attract readers -
they're meaningless as far as providing actual "proof" of anything.
I knew that the only answer to my comment would be to attack the Utes.Funny how there's no rebuttals to my thought on byu. They either agree or
they have no hope.
ekuteBYU has a new coaching staff and a young team that has suffered
a plethora of injuries (38 players have missed games because of injuries). All of those injured players have given dozens of younger players
valuable opportunities to gain live game playing experience that will pay big
dividends next season.
I don't have much of a problem as I read comments that deal with 'our
team is better than your team, because'. Then I read what the
'because' is and it feel like laughing. This year the Utes are much
better than my Cougars. Much better. It was only a six point win for the team
up north, but we were taken to the wood shed. Regarding a desirable situation
for a college team, the PAC is light years beyond Independence. The Y is being
out-recruited by the U, not because the U is a better university, but because
they belong to the PAC. As far as a total package is concerned, I feel the Y is
superior in nearly every category of university life. That comment might well
open the door for one of the few Y-haters to state that one of the reasons
he/she hates the Y is we feel we're better than others. Not the
case...I'm not better, the Y, as a great place to gain an education, is.
My opinion based upon experiences I've had while living in SLC and
attending both the Y and the U. Back to football. At this time I
don't feel the Y will ever catch the U unless we are invited to a major
conference. If that happens, we shall leave them far behind. Again, my

Try hard to distinguish the difference when reading comments.
Snack PAC,"Say what you want about Utah as you seek comfort."I've stated my reasons for hope...where you gonna hang your hat?
its simply a no brainer to want to spend a week in Fabulous Hawaii rather than
go to some "who Cares" low tier bowl game such as the Moroni Turkey Bowl
.... Neither The Y nor last chance university deserves to be in any bowl game
this year. It will be great for the Cougs to get this week over with and have
the extra time to try and get this program straighten out for next year ...
ekuteNothing but a bunch of whiny excuses. The Utes have
lost 6 of their last 7, yet here you are seeking comfort for another losing
season in the PAC 12, by ragging on BYU for suffering their first losing season
since 2004.Why don't you just admit that the Utes will never be
anything more than a bottom dwelling also ran in the PAC 12?
Rockwell,"Say what you want about Utah as you seek comfort.Fact-We lost a lot of leaders and good players to the NFL last summer.Fact-Utah has recruited well and continues to do so."
If you ever wanted proof that God is merciful, then end of this BYU Football
season is all the proof that you need.
BlueHusky"BYU was good last year. This year 38 injuries killed
the team But they have good young athletes. The coaches are not stupid. Just a
very strange year."Couldn't agree more.--------------------ekuteFact: Utah has lost 6 of
their last 7 and is in danger of suffering their third losing season in 6
years.@at long last. . . - "Does this mean, DN, that the string
of bowl games is intact?"You're really clueless if you
actually think that the DN or BYU fans are really considering the BYU-Hawaii
game a bowl game.
@ Al the Accountant , the one intangible is that Hawaii gets revved up when
it's BYU, so I see a lop-sided win for Hawaii. BYU just has no heart. It
is indeed dismal.
Hey Baby,Not that it really matters, as both teams are horrible and
it really doesn't matter who wins this game, but if we are going to do
comparables, there are 5 teams that they each played:Hawaii 38 UMass
35 vs Umass 16 BYU 10; Clear Advantage HawaiiHawaii 37 SJSU 26 vs BYU 41
SJSU 20; Slight Advantage BYUHawaii 23 UNLV 31 vs BYU 31 UNLV 21; Clear
Advantage BYUHawaii 21 Fresno 31 vs BYU 13 Fresno 20; About a washHawaii 0 USU 38 vs BYU 24 USU 40; Both horrible, but slight advantage BYURecord in games vs common opponents: 2-3 for both teams; washSo,
if you take all directly comparable games and use that as your starting place
for predicting a winner, you would have to at least give the slight edge to BYU.
My prediction: 13-10 BYU. Again, not that it matters. Because they both are
horrible and this is just the Ineptitude Bowl.
Put Lamb in charge and let him decide who stays and who goes.Stop with the
arrogance.Fill the schedule with home/at home games vs other mid
-majors.Say what you want about Utah as you seek comfort.Fact-We lost a lot of leaders and good players to the NFL last summer.Fact-Utah has recruited well and continues to do so.Go Utes!
BYU was good last year. This year 38 injuries killed the team But they have good
young athletes. The coaches are not stupid. Just a very strange year.No firing coaches, no hanging Holmo in effigy. If next year is like this, then
time to clean house, maybe,Coach Peterson at Washington had a couple
of poor years, then BANG! in the Championship Game against Alabama.Chill, people. I''d be more frustrated if I were a Utah fan - an
already established program limps from one mediocre season to the next, firing
OC's every year. Not a healthy sight. Loved their effort against my Dawgs,
but ... College Football is a very difficult profession. Let's see what
Kilani can do next year? A repeat of this? Adios, with love.
If and buts were candy and nuts our Christmas would be merrier. Have fun in
Hawaii and come home with a win. Hopefully they keep Wilstead on redshirt and
only use Critchlow, Kefinzes (sp), & Detmer. Save Wilstead for next year. If
they play him what a mistake of robbing the future of Wilstead by loosing a full
year of eligibility .
A duck by any other name.... So you can call this a bowl game if you want, but
a bowl game it is not. I don't really understand what a bowl game is, but I
know it is for teams with "winning" records and that is something BYU
does not have. Perhaps in a year or two they can win few games and make it to a
bowl game. Not happening this year.
@Rimsky Demarius Even though I'm a dreaded Utah fan, I agree
with your sentiments. I would hate to see any team simply throw in the towel
because its been a bad season. My guess is that Joe Critchlow can do a better
job of guiding the offense now that he has a couple of complete games under his
belt. BYU is favored by 3 points in this game. My guess is that they can win by
more than that and honestly hope that they do.
Does this mean, DN, that the string of bowl games is intact? LOL
Do the cougars have a winning record with their bowl games? Maybe
not a good idea to treat this as their bowl game.
A "bowl-equivalent" end-of-the-season game in Hawaii honestly may be
more than the team merits but I wish them well against an almost equally
pathetic Hawaii team. One of the few positive things the BYU sports bureaucrats
did was schedule an away game with Hawaii for this season because it allowed us
to play 13 games -- meaning we were able to add Portland State at the front end
of the schedule and get one win that we otherwise would not have had. If this
had not been done then we would be 2-9 right now (BTW, Portland State finished
their season winless). Doing the transitive property thing, in view
of our performance against USU (a game we had a chance to win if we hadn't
been so uber generous with the turnovers) compared to theirs I would predict we
beat Hawaii. But nothing is a given this year.
Holmoe's last season as Head Coach at Cal ended at 1-10. Holmoe then left.
He needs to do the same thing now.
Worst team and coaching in all the years I have watched BYU football...and thats
about 40 years. No energy. No drive. Coaches looking like they quit themselves
weeks ago and have no clue what to do. No sign of Holme...he is hiding because
this tragedy group of coaches is his doing. I hope they clean house and start
over...in any normal program that’s what would happen. We at BYU may have
to suffer through several years of this ....because that’s how kind we are
to opposing teams. Well...until I see some effort...I’m done writing
checks. I can support a team/organization that shows effort, but I can’t
support this level of incompetence. How we can fall so fast from being a
competative team...., to this....is stunning. No..it’s very ...very
...embarrassing for BYU and the church as a sponsoring organization. We can and
should do much better. This is certainly not excellence. We are now
officially...a joke of a program. Thanks Holmoe.

Two 3-win teams meeting in a season-ending bowl game.At least the
