Why did they wait and not play him earlier? Why was Steve Young almost a safety or whatever and buried on the QB depth chart? That's just one of many examples. Coaches are fallible. This isn't just here but many teams. Why was Alex Smith not the starter when he clearly should have been? Play Hoge. His first start was against Wisconsin. No time given in the pocket. That's asking a lot. Mangum would have done worst as he isn't the athlete Hoge is. Anybody would look good against San Jose St. BYU actually struggled for a good part of the game on offense. Don't wait, start Hoge NOW

It's hard for a HC to put a starter on the bench, most starters won't stay on the bench and then you have a migration - BYU has seen that before where the starter is benched and both he and the 3rd string transfer out that summer.

Is Hoge leaps and bounds better than Mangum?

If he was, why did we wait so long to see him play?

It does something to your starting QB when you bench him, they rarely come back to what they once were - it's a tricky thing to do because it's risky.

If Tanner is ineffective then Beau should take the game around half time - this team has a lot of issues in it, not just the QB.

Can the OL improve next year? We've got a ton of new OL guys coming in.

Can receivers and RBs step up?

Might not be time to throw Tanner away as a failure - next year might be a completely different team!

"Who knows what might have happened had Hoge not gotten hurt?"

No - the question is: "Who knows what might have happened had Hoge not thrown a pick-6."

Strange day when Fresno State looks like a really tough game.

Well, Tanner or Beau: gotta let Tanner start. Lets see if he improves from last week, where he completed some bombs and moved fairly well. People forget that Mangum was better on the move two years ago. With the bad ankle, he was a statue. These days, statues don't last long. He's moving now ... My guess is that he'll stay in the game, barring injury.

    Jello is Good:
I agree. My assessment would be that we know what we got in TM. I just don't see him turning it on and being really effective this week at Fresno. If we want to go down swinging like Sitake says, let Hoge play. He shows fire and a lot more confidence.

I think they will do what Jello says, give TM a shot and if it isn't working try and get a spark with Hoge. But it may be too little too late by then.

    Just win cougars!

If needed? START HIM!!!! Please! Hoge showed during the USU game that he is leaps and bounds, more suited for the Detmer play calling and Pro-Style offense.

"If Hoge hadn't gone down against Utah State, he'd be the starter right now."

"Maybe, maybe not. Personally I think it's pretty evident that the offensive woes were not because of just one or two people (like Tanner Mangum). Mangum still tops the depth chart for a reason."

I don't know. I think the coaching staff was moving on. If Hoge finishes that game the way he started, I think they take their time getting a noticeably gimpy Mangum back for Boise St. If Hoge competes in that game Mangum never sees the field and gets a chance to have a reasonably good first half against SJSU. But since he did, he plays against Fresno State. If he struggles at all in the first half, look for an early hook. Sitake has run out of patience.

I love this kid’s attitude and am glad he is back eligible. Hoge has more weapons than Mangum and I would suggest the team has a better chance at winning with Hoge at the helm. But knowing Detmer, Mangum could throw 6 picks and be totally ineffective, and he wouldn’t get benched unless he was injured.
Get ready to witness another game plan centered around the running game and 1-2 yd dink passes to protect Mangum’s psyche.

Hoge is easily the best QB on the team. Didn't anyone else see that while he played?

I don’t feel good about or have confidence in BYU’s 1st, 2nd, or 3rd string choices for QB. If, a it’s a big if, we do well against Fresno State, then I will say BYU has finally turned the corner. We could easily lose the next two games.

Hoge looked pretty good against Utah State while he was still in it. It was too bad that he had to go down. Wish him luck.
