Regardless of how you spin it,

you’ll never change the fact that Utah only beat one of the worst BYU teams in history by less than a touchdown.

Utah fans love to beat their chests about point spread,

but only when you think it makes Utah look better.

Otherwise, according to U, point spread is meaningless.

    LOL at the inconsistency.

    Cougar logic is amazing.

Okay then you #7 USC was only 1 point better than Utah?

    Sagaran:

    Utah #52
    BYU #116

Check this fact, Utah is closer to Albama than BYU is to Utah.

"Interesting how BYU fans make an issue of the Utes only beating BYU by 6 points..."

What's really interesting is how inconsistent Utah fans are in deciding when margin of victory is important.

    Versus BYU
54-10 - very important (Utah fans have bragged about this score for years)
20-19 - not at all important

    Versus Oregon
62-20 - big deal (Utah fans bragged incessantly about this score)
    20-41 - no big deal

    Versus Alabama
31-17 - big deal (Utah fans still brag about how the Utes dominated Alabama)
    Versus New Mexico
13-10 - no big deal (Utah fans have completely forgotten how Utah barely beat New Mexico
    Versus BYU
48-24 - big deal (Utah fans still brag about how the Utes dominated BYU in 2008)

Regardless of how you desperately U try to ignore reality,

in 2017, U were only 6 points better than one of the worst BYU teams in the last half century.

Interesting how BYU fans make an issue of the Utes only beating BYU by 6 points, because the margin of victory now becomes their focus to help them deal with yet another loss.

"We beat you for the 7th straight time." "Yes, but you only beat us by 6 points."

How do BYU fans take solace in only losing by 6, but losing nonetheless? Is losing a good thing? You guys lost....we won.....scoreboard, BYU fans.....scoreboard.

As a fan I'm most worried about the fact that we don't seem to be improving over the last couple of games and that's new for me. I never expected this team to win it all and I did expect growing pains, but I truly expected the d line to become deeper, stouter and able to stop just about any running game. The offense is new and I'll be forgiving for another season, but right now--our new offensive philosophy seems to be a lot like many of our old offensive philosophies--minus having a dependable run game. Getting the ball in the red zone is hardly even a cause for celebration and more of a casual acknowledgment that we might end up getting three points out of the deal. Too many shot their mouths off about our brilliant young qb--when he had really only beaten three very poor teams. He has talent--but he (to this point)--has not shown that he can win games in the Pac 12. Good luck this Saturday--but if they fail to wrap up on D and if they continue to struggle in the red zone, I don't know if we have the athletes to beat UCLA. They might be struggling, but they aren't struggling any worse than we are at this point.

I like our chances against a couple of these teams (UCLA, Colorado.....maybe WSU).....so the season isn't lost. From the sounds of the Ute players following the loss to the Ducks, you'd think that they'll be ready to play Friday night against the Bruins. We'll see.

What's absolutely hysterical is that BYU fans come on here and seize the opportunity to poke fun at 4 losses in a row for the Utes, where their team is where they are in the college football landscape. Being in the bottom top 10 in total offense is nothing to brag about. And these BYU fans will be crying in their root beer come Saturday when they experience yet another loss to Fresno. Mark it down.

Very possible. I didn't want to lean on that "excuse" because initially it looked like Utah had reloaded, but the non-conference opponents made Utah look good. I don't know if the defensive issue is scheme or personnel. Maybe Hans will do a nice YouTube video on the topic.

Perhaps your comment about another Utah-BYU Bowl Game was a bit out there. But, I think Las Vegas Bowl organizers would take it in a heartbeat. It's a guaranteed sell-out (i.e. money-maker, in an era where money is king in college football).

But, if it became a possibility, certain Utah boosters might pressure the U to stay away. I sense, there is a slice of Utah people that feel BYU is now simply not in the same league (pun intended).

Warning, I am a BYU fan so take it for what it's worth. There are three games that Utah could still win. WSU is headed in the wrong direction. They pull off two and they are good. Maybe they win two and BYU wins out, gets the exemption, and they meet in the absolute irrelevant bowl somewhere. I like Whit and wish him the best.

65TossPowerTrap "Is it possible that Whittingham's ego will not allow him to admit that he is playing the wrong quarterback?"
The problem isn't quarterback. Why would you replace 300 yards of passing to put in a senior? At this point, you're developing for next year.

A bigger concern -- and maybe more affecting Whittingham's ego -- is defense. Rich Rod had it figured out from day one, but it seems that ALL the PAC coaches have figured out the Whittingham defense. Running backs are going for 7 or 8 yards -- they're ripping off runs of 25, 35, 45 yards or more. That doesn't usually happen to a "normal" Whittingham defense, and for the last few weeks, they've made stars of opposing team running backs.

What are you even trying to justify? You beat a division II team and 2 of the worst teams in the nation and your stoked? Is BYU really that relevant to you that even when they are ranked one of the two worst schools in the nation, beating them by 6 points has you stoked despite a 4 game losing streak in which the average score was 31 to 19? Stoked about when the Playoff rankings come out tomorrow for the first time Utah will not be on them? Stoked that at this point it would take a herculean effort to become bowl eligible at 6-6?

Its hard to be a fan when your team is losing but without the agony of defeat there is no thrill of victory. We have had the agony, its time to get back to thrill.

I will say that the new 'wiz kid' OC and his offence seem to be running all the same plays and in the exact same situations that we always did. I could write 5 lines of code and get better play calling.

And as always, please please please quit calling so many wide receiver screens.

Wait til ya see what next years Offensive Coordinator can do with Jack Tuttle. I for one believe that the 12th time is the charm. Kyle has finally had enough and he's gonna get serious next year about having a better offense, these past 10 years have just been a warm up for things to come. Mark my words, 250 yards rushing, and 325 yards passing per game next year. We will score on 85% of our red zone attempts, of which 80% will be touchdowns. I have that much faith in Kyle's knowledge of offense and Offensive Coordinators. Go Utes!!!!

With only 2 games winnable for the Utes(UCLA and Colorado) there is no room for error to make a bowl. Rosen being Questionable will help, but that's the game I thought they had the best shot at winning even with Rosen. 6 and 6 isn't great, but at least it gives the team extra practice time leading up to a bowl.

Crossroads? What crossroads? The little red engine that could crossed the road into irrelevance weeks ago following a pre-season of patsies who falsely inflated their ego, and their ranking. There are more spankings ahead for the last place team in the south who is only 6 points better than one of the worst teams in the country. Thank goodness OSU is winless, preventing the crimson from occupying the 12th spot in the worst P5 league in the country!

I'm baffled. This is the same crew that almost took out USC on the road, yet even with Huntley back they're worse.

A bowl is still possible, but not likely. The two Washington schools will be very tough. UCLA and Colorado are still winnable. But those two teams won't go quietly either.

I originally picked the Utes to go 7-5 this year. After the unexpected losses to AZ State and Oregon they'll have to do well just to make it to 6-6.

  • Mountainman38 Idaho Falls, ID

The Utah OL continues to struggle bigtime. Last year (and before) they had some issues pass blocking, but they could run block. This year they cannot seem to do either one. Oh, I take that back, they did pass protect fairly well against a 3-man rush. And in the last couple years they game breaking running backs like Booker or Joe Williams. Moss is improving, but he just is not in the same class. It is such a waste to have such a good crop of receivers, good passers and not enough time to get the ball to them. Anybody have a ancient blocking sled for rent?

On defense, what is the problem? In football from junior league through the NFL, if you cannot protect the edge, the opponent will kill you, repeatedly. Fix the game plan and LB's and DB's work harder on open field tackling.

The Utes have a lot of trouble on converting third downs, while the opponents convert third-and-long with regularity. When you have third and short, why not put in an eight or nine-man OL like Stanford does? At this point in the season, what more can you lose?

With four games to go and three at home, it is crunch time. A victory in Seattle is not likely, but the other three are winnable.
