"But that’s assuming the Utes don’t lose more players to injury, or succumb to discouragement". ...or getting discouraged trying to find a positive article about the U in the D-News. At 1-7 D-News still tries to put a positive spin on the y season even though their remaining games are against the worst teams in the NCAA.

Unfortunately for U, the only trophies the Utes have collected since joining the PAC 12, are a bunch of imaginary SOS trophies.

    1984 BYU SOS #82
    2004 Utah SOS #70
    2008 Utah SOS #80

    source: College Football Sports-Reference

The 2008 Utes would have been DESTROYED by the 1984 Cougars!

Let's not forget that 1984 BYU was basically the same team that finished #7 in 1983 with 11 straight wins, including two road wins versus Top 25 teams.

2003 Utah was shut out by 10-loss UNLV 0-27.

From 1979 to 1984, BYU had four straight NFL-caliber QB's that finished in the Top 3 in the Heisman voting.

Alex Smith finished #4 in the Heisman in 2004 and Brian Johnson wasn't even good enough to make an NFL roster.

Since the article is about Utah, as Ute fans we just need to ignore BYU fans who are just looking for "misery loves company." Any realistic Utah fan knows that we are not firing Coach Whit. We also know, that despite our disappointment we really didn't know whether we were going to have a mediocre or good team but we knew after losing 9 starters to the NFL, implementing a new offense, new OC, new QB that it was going to be a challenging rebuilding year. This season's Utes may ultimately not make a bowl but a few points here or there and Utah is 6-1. ASU knocked UW out of playoff picture so just maybe they aren't that bad. All is NOT lost.

Let's just hope that its not both an October and November slide.

"Utah's 2003 through 2008 record pales by comparison, which is why the Utes were never serious contenders for a NC even in their best season ever."
    ------
    Your not serious are you?
    BYU's 13-0 record in 1984 was against the following: Pitt (3-7-1), Baylor (5-6), Tulsa (6-5), Hawaii (7-4), Air force (8-4), Utah (6-5-1), SDSU (4-7-1), Wyo. (6-6),
Colo. State (3-8), New Mexico (4-8), UTEP (2-9), Utah State (1-10), and Michigan (6-6) notice NO RANKED teams and 7 with LOSING records.

Utah in 2008 ended up with a 13-0 record and a final #2 ranking and played the following (ranked teams are ranking when played): Michigan (#24) (9-3), UNLV (5-7), Utah State (3-9),Air Force (8-5), Weber State (McBride was coach) (10-4), Oregon State (#18) (10-3), Wyoming (4-8), Colo. State (7-6), New Mexico (4-8), TCU (#11) (11-2), SDSU (2-10), BYU (#14) (10-3), and Alabama (#4) (12-2). Utah played 5 teams with LOSING records and 5 RANKED teams and 7 teams with Bowl Appearances

I would put the 2008 Utes up against the 1984 Cougars any day.

BYU's 1979 through 1984 record of five Top 12 finishes in six seasons, four Top 3 Heisman Trophy finalists, 6 straight conference championships, 24-game winning streak (which included road wins over three Top 25 teams), and back-to-back Top 7 finishes, convinced all FIVE major selecting organizations that BYU was MORE DESERVING of being selected 1984 National Champions than any other team........................"
    -----
The 1984 AWARDING of a national championship had nothing to do with 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982 or 1983.
It was AWARDED based upon a 13-0 record (That and nothing more). That record included stellar wins over the following powerhouses:
    Pittsburgh (3-7-1 record)
    Baylor (5-6)
    Tulsa (6-5 )
    Hawaii (7-4 )
    Air force (8-4)
    Utah (6-5-1)
    SDSU (4-7-1)
    Wyoming (6-6)
    Colorado State (3-8)
    New Mexico (4-8)
    UTEP (2-9)
    Utah State (1-10) and Finally
    Michigan (6-6)

PAC 12 is the worst P5 conference. They constantly say that we are so good we beat up on ourselves. This year there are no great teams. Some good, some average and some mediocre, but heads up ute fans you still can win the conference, so unlike BYU you still have something to play for in November.

This is the worst year in many for D1 football in the state. Maybe if you Cougar, Utes, and Aggie fans would quit badgering each other things at your schools might get better.

PAC 12 is quickly becoming irrelevant in football.

Give Kyle Whittingham credit for putting out a bowl-worthy team most years. There was a two-year dip early in the Pac-12 era, but since then his teams have won nine games twice and 10 games once. He has only missed bowl games twice as a head coach. That success is now shaky after three consecutive conference losses. -- Brad Rock

Bowl game? How about 3 of 6 top 25 team and 16 CFP rankings?

And Utah has the talent to make the bowl game this year at 7-5.
