@BleedCougarBlue:"So is that 2 or 3 losses for Utah?"It is actually 4 losses for Utah this year. The scoreboard confirms
three of the losses (Stanford, USC, ASU) and the fourth loss was to BYU because
BYU had the ball and a chance to win at the end of the game. That BYU
loss was the toughest because it was like 5 losses in a row to BYU (2012, 2013,
2015, 2016, 2017). Even though the scoreboard says Utah won all 5 of those
games, BYU gets credit for the victories because they "should have" won
all five of them.
Great game! Amazing outcome!
I can't remember the last time a Utah team couldn't get its defense
off the field in third and long situations like these last few weeks. On the
bright side, this loss has given old Cougar fan friends a reason to stop back in
and say hello on the DN comment boards. I suspect that continued stinkfests
from the Utes might prompt the whole gang to come back.
"I think the 6 point win over BYU now says it all. ECU spanked BYU worse
than Utah did"samefan:If you're going to play
the comparative score card, you'd better wait to see how BYU-P does against
San Jose State. Utah beat 'em 54-16, so to keep chanting your "beat us
by 6" mantra, the coogs need to win by at least 32 points. Do you think your
coogs can score 32 and shut out the Spartans?I didn't think so.
Who is the genius that decided to bench Williams for Huntley?
Hard to remember a Whit team looking so flat from kickoff to the end of the
game.Usually we could count on our defense to keep us in the game
and they did a decent job limiting ASU to field goals on several drives, but
what has happened to our pass rush? No pressure on opposing QB's and our
offense looked completely lost.Very frustrating to watch.
LV Coug: “Someone help me out - was I supposed to mark something down?

When it comes to sports I love BYU winning at anything and Utah Utes losing at
anything.I'm so disappointed the Cougs can't show up on the
field. Oh well. Never mind, BYU won't even beat a UMass team that just
dropped 55 points on a team that looks just like BYU....ill prepared, poorly
coached and zero mojo. Here is hope for the utes. Coach Whit will
make changes. He will not allow Oregon to drop 30 points and will likely take
control of the D this week. He can see problems and correct them. Sitake
can't.Coach Whit will get the right QB behind center for Saturday.
Williams or whomever, but he will fix that fiasco.Detmer and Sitake
can't.Detmer and Sitake won't.Detmer and Sitake don't
have a clue what to do.The nightmare for the utes is that yesterday
they looked pathetic. Last week they looked competitive.Oops.Now not so much. Not after SC dropped that game in SouthBend
and looked as Pathetic as the u did yesterday. Here is hopeful the u
keeps making my Saturdays bright. My mighty (pathetic) cougars won't.
No excuses. ASU had better players, a better team, and better
coaching. Utah was beat soundly. At this point in the season Utah should hope
for two more wins and a bowl invite. Tyler Huntley is still the better option
at QB over Troy Williams. Huntley is the more talented and better player. If
Williams played on Saturday the loss would have likely been worse.
Sad, sad day in salt city and provo. Two months ago each fan base saw
themselves "reaching for the stars." Unfortunately, it is "back to
earth" time folks.I had to stop watching BOTH games......they
got so bad.Mangum puts up over 319 yards passing, while it seemed to
me like it was closer to 119 yds.Huntley completed 21 of 35
passes.....problem is that 4 of the 21 were to the ASU defense.
I think the 6 point win over BYU now says it all. ECU spanked BYU worse than
Utah did and the other P5 teams they played humiliated BYU. I think Utah would
beat ECU, but not by much. This looks to be a disastrous year for both
programs. BYU will be lucky to win another game this year and Utah is likely to
lose 3 or 4 of the next 5.
It good to see that the little cougars our out and about trying to make
themselves feel better for their outstanding victory in winning the worst team
in the nation award! As for Utah, Ouch! it was horrible in all phases
of the game. Watching it was just brutal and very sad. It appeared the Ludwig
had returned to sub in for the OC for most of the game. It also did not appear
that the Tyler was very accurate and that may have had a lot to do with his arm
strength because his passing was all over the place and his typical accuracy was
not there. I also learned after the game that a lot of the D-line was still
banged up from USC. So Utah, It is time to put on you Big Boy pants
and step up and make a play. No one did. In fact I don't think the team was
really ready of the game. Next week at Oregon (yes BYU, Utah has a
real game, not a high school with a 1-7 record like you), Utah has an
opportunity for redemption. PAC 12 play is not going to get any easier so Utah
need to just pick themselves up, Play Utah football, Defense, run game, with
quality passing and move forward.
Wittingham still can't get to say his defense is horrid. Which it is. That
is not a great offense that went against. I think they punted twice.
"How many times are you gonna throw backwards to the sidelines, "Boy, isn't that the truth.Looking for a solution?
First of all we need to publically ask Chris Hill what his goal is. Is running
around in the middle of the pack losing by one point..three points, a lot of
times to the eventual winners ok with him and the school? It's not ok with
the fans, but that's where we are..at best. Whittingham seems
to be able to handle greatness when it's thrust on him (freak years with
great talent), but doesn't seem to be able to create it, and that's
the difference Chris doesn't seem to be able to make (unless mediocrity is
an acceptable goal). Two observations characterize this. First what is now the traditional lousy offense, and his pathetic attempts to
fix itTwo, a lack of discipline throughout the whole team, and this
is becoming usual. Most of the close losses in the past years have hung on
penalties and sloppy execution. This has to obvious to Mr. Hill so
he needs to step up and say..what's up.
BYU fans are trash talking Utah's loss to a team that just beat the #5 team
in the country. This is amazing considering BYU's 1-7 team just lost to a
previously 1-6 non-Power 5 team with the nation's worst defense.
As a diehard BYU fan, I can say that Utah's loss to ASU is understandable
IMHO. Utah threw everything EVERYTHING at USC at the Coliseum and
had their hearts ripped out when Williams didn't notice a wide open
Carrington in the endzone. If Williams sees Carrington and completes the toss
and catch, Utah comes out amped and fired up against ASU.I think
Tyler Huntley will be fine. He just needs to shake out the cobwebs again. Utah
always seems one step from success where BYU seems to have a more systemic
problem with Detmer and poor recruiting. Regardless, both teams seem
demoralized right now. Good luck to both.
Keep your heads up mates. We still have a chance at a PAC 12 South championship,
a PAC 12 playoff and if the cards fall right a final 4 appearance or at least a
major bowl on new years day. After all we are in a power 5 conference. The PAC
12 is the PAC 12 and other conferences and teams may stumble too. Think
We'd better be careful, rough schedule to close the season and we might
miss a bowl game. I'm really nervous :(
Brave Sir Robin - San Diego, CAOct. 21, 2017 8:59 p.m.@worf"Nobody (not even ECU) should hang their hat on a win over BYU-P. The race
to the bottom is over, and BYU-P won convincingly."Oh, BYU
stinks, that's no new revelation. The fact that it appears that Utah
isn't much better is new news and very surprising. And because
of that your smack talk has little impact. "Timid Sparrow" is not only
your DN call sign, but may be the new Utah mascot.
I am not from the state of Utah but I always want the inter-mountain schools to
do well. I especially want opponents of BYU to do well. If the region seems to
be mediocre in terms of football, many top recruits will not give any of the
teams a second look.Despite the annoying Ute trolls who inhabit articles
about BYU, I was sad to see the Utes lose. I remember years ago (in basketball)
when both BYU and Utah were ranked in the top ten. I would like to see that
consistently happen in all sports. And could both the BYU trolls and
Utah trolls give it a rest for a while. Pretty pathetic to trash talk when that
talk is about who is worst rather than who is best. After today, neither side
has any bragging rights.
Every year we keep hearing about the next OC and the next QB, but Utah's
offense remains predictable and sluggish. I can't fine any major
differences between this year's offensive plays / play calling vs past
seasons. Plays are slow to develop, receivers seldom give the QB open shots,
passes are mostly to the sidelines, third down passes are usually received short
of the first down, and Utah either plays down to its competition or plays into
its predictable game when playing better teams. After all the years of
following Whitt, I must conclude that he is nervous about having a real hardcore
and experienced OC. The exception to that observations are older very
experienced OC's that pose no threat to Whitt's status on the field.
I doubt that Taylor will be making a second year at Utah and I doubt his
replacement will be an experienced D1 OC.
The only difference between BYU and Utah is that Utah is saying "just wait
till next week" andd BYU is saying "just wait till next year"!Utah is a disappointment and the PAC 12 is turning out to be the worst
P5 conference in the country. I don't thing that the PAC 12 had won a big
game yet this year.ASU may be the team to beat right now. The Utes
look like there destiny is once again in the middle of the pac12 south. Pretty
sad, especially with all the talk we've been hearing from the folks up on
the hill. Maybe it's time for another change at OC, maybe it's time
for Kyle to go, or maybe the utes just can hack it. Hard to say but the Utes,
Cougars and Aggies are all pretty sad this year with the Cougars being the worst
of the 3.
The ASU game shouldn't have come as a surprise to anyone. The 4-0 start was
against 4 terrible patsies and provided false hope for a well below average
team, in the worst P5 conference in the nation, that only beat the worst team
in the nation by 6 points. There's more of the same to come from last
place in the south Target Lake City. Go Ducks
Utah was trounced by a much better Sun Devil team. Four takeaways was only part
of the total dominance, tackles for loss and rushing the passer took its toll.
Really an unexpected drubbing but after ASU beat Washington, Utah wasn't
* The Utes must have wore out the top PAC12 team. Southern Cal? * Two
weeks ago, Arizona State ranked 114 in defense.* BYU will not crack the
top ten next week, but maybe the bottom ten.
* San Diego State were ranked because they beat PAC 12 teams, but struggles
with MWC teams.* Utah should stick with Joe Williams.* BYU is in
need of a few JC players and new assistant coaches.* BYU plays to
conservative and timid.I will use the words of Imperial7, but apply
it to BYU:Pathetic. We have no offense. We have no offensive
coordinator. Detmer better make some radical changes before he gets changed.
I guess the Utes only beating the worst team in FBS college football this season
by six points should have warned us about how this season was going to work out.
Utes played like they had serious jet lag.
Note to Troy Taylor.......take your elementary playbook back to the
fcs.....seriously, your offensive play calls DO NOT work in a power 5
conference. After 7 games, thats enough with this offense, you need to go just
like the last 500 off coordinaters....Bring Norm Chow back somehow!!!! The
offense is exactly, but worse than any yr before!!!! How many times are you
gonna throw backwards to the sidelines, the out routes are so old school!!!!
Pass the ball over the middle, and not on 3rd down when the defense knows you
are. This offense is so confused and flustered, its not fixable....2018
can't come quick enough.
@worfNobody (not even ECU) should hang their hat on a win over
BYU-P. The race to the bottom is over, and BYU-P won convincingly.
To Utes83,There are clearly some adjustments to be made, but as even
the commentators noted, real life isn't like a video game. You can't
expect a player to come back from injury and play as if he never left. This is
especially true with a defense that plays as tough as ASU's has the last
two weeks.Sure, some might have believed that Huntley would
magically fix any problems with the offense, but such adjustments take time. And do you really think Bateman would have done any better against a
defense that held Washington to just a touchdown?
I am going to pretend that didn't happen.
So sad to see the utes resort to cheap shot dirty play today .... May cost them
the game next week as well ...
Hard to come on here and criticize all things considered but I really do wonder
if we're gonna hear the same thing next year from Utah fans as we heard
this year about Troy Taylor and every other year about every other lousy
offensive coordinator Utah has hired? If it hasn't been obvious
for the last 13 years, and to everyone that isn't a Utah fan it has been
obvious, then it should be obvious now that whittingham has absolutely no clue
how to hire offensive coordinators. He's hire something like 12 of them and
has never once gotten a good one, not once. That is an amazing track
record and it is only surpassed by the track record of ute fans on here claiming
greatness for every single one of them every single time one has been hired.
Holy Cow! When I was counting wins earlier in the year I figured ASU was a gimme
for the Utes. I am not sure the Utes have another win in their schedule, maybe
UCLA and Oregon. This is not looking good for a decent bowl.
worf - McAllen, TXOct. 21, 2017 6:57 p.m.Outward and downward.Losing to an unranked (3-3) team from the lowest P5 conference is
nothing to hang your hat on.Neither is a six point win over BYU._____Right on bro.!!!BYU is an SOS buster for everyone they
have played so far.
Max-was-right - Mapleton, UTOct. 21, 2017 5:04 p.m.Will the u win
another game? I don't see them being bowl eligible. Even for the Waco
little Debbie bowl. They just don't have the talent to play in the PAC ten.
Scott is regretting inviting them and Colorado and adding two door mats to a
once great league._____What else can be expected from a fan of
a bottom 10 team?
Outward and downward.Losing to an unranked (3-3) team from the
lowest P5 conference is nothing to hang your hat on.Neither is a six
point win over BYU.
Half the team is going to be out with targeting calls. Please coach Krysto, come
teach the team how to be safe. This is out of control!
Sorry Ute fans, but you don't get to claim "pathetic." BYU owns
that moniker, along with horrible, terrible and any other like adjective. At
least you lost to a very good team. BYU is losing to a very bad team team.
Well, the wheels came off today. With 3 conference losses and 2 difficult games
to play against U of W and WSU, the best the U can get out of the season is a
2nd or 3rd tier bowl invitation.
Been saying it all along and getting ridiculed for it, will say it
again.....give Bateman a shot!!!! Like all 4th quarter, you already lost the
game, couldn' t do any worse than Williams or Huntley. Utes on both sides
of the ball have no drive or care. Hard to watch a team with the lazy body
language and finger pointing, at this point a bowl game is a stretch. Go Utes
I think the Utes can still win the PAC 12 south and possibly still make the
" We would have won if Huntley would have played ," Oh , wait a minute
he did play ....
So is that 2 or 3 losses for Utah?
Ugly all around. Not a lot of room to criticize other programs about targeting
calls for a while.
Yes BYU is bad, and it would appear that Utah really was only 6 points better.
Ouch. Bowl is going to be tough.
No Ute Fan should be on here defending that crappy performance. Obviously, they
rushed Huntley back to soon. He was OFF as off could be and the entire team
laid and egg at home. Across the board awful performance from players to
coaches. Personally, the Troy Taylor experiment has been a failure for me.
Utah has seriously demonstrated the mediocre PAC12 team they are this year - at
best. And no Ute Fan should defend a 1 point loss at USC. That was more about
USC playing awful for the first half than Utah doing anything spectacular. They
were lucky to be in a position to win that game. This really is the rebuilding
year we were expecting.
Will the u win another game? I don't see them being bowl eligible. Even for
the Waco little Debbie bowl. They just don't have the talent to play in the
PAC ten. Scott is regretting inviting them and Colorado and adding two door mats
to a once great league.
Well all you that couldn't wait for Huntley to return what do you think
now? Looks like we have 2quarterbacks with shaken confidence not good
Lets face it none of the Utah based teams are good this year. UofU, BYU, USU
will be lucky to go bowling this year. Good ahead and talk about how bad BYU is
UofU fans or USU, but it the best win this season is against one of the worse
BYU teams to be fielded since the 1970s and helps you to get through how bad
your team is great. For us BYU fans there is no comfort in anything that has
happened this year. Lets face it football for the state of Utah is a blast this
year, so lets get over it and move on.
Can someone get me Williams number so that I can call him and personally
apologize for all the things I said about him the last two weeks? Huntley was turrible, just turrible Kenny! #pathetic
Huntley should have been benched in the 2nd quarter but the coaches
couldn’t figure it out. What are sorry, pathetic showing. Utah’s
program just took three steps back today, how sad
Pathetic play today for the Utes.... Arizona State deserved to win. Huntley
was about as rusty as he could be.... No excuses.
Same old, same old. Ute fans need to accept they don't either have the
talent or coaching to seriously contend for the PAC-12 title. Hopefully, this
team has enough wins left in the season to make a bowl game as I'm sure
100/100 Ute fans chalked up a home win against Arizona State in their win
Simply horrible on offense.
As disappointing as the outcome was the dirty play by Utah. Multiple targeting
and late hits. No excuse for such dangerous dirty tactics. Go utes!
Someone help me out - was I supposed to mark something down? It’s so hard
to keep track.
This is the most undisciplined Whittingham team I have seen. They are young,
but some of these penalties are inexcusable. I was hoping Kyle would have
righted the shop at this point, but it just isn’t happening. Hopefully
Utah can pull off two more wins and get into a bowl game.
So where does that leave the state? Weber or Southern Utah as the only decent
teams? BYU is having a bad year, and Utah is doing their November swoon one
month early. Maybe you Utes will beat Oregon.
The house we flipped sold for above asking price on the 1st day and now the Utes
got spanked at home. My day is now complete!!!!!!!
Pathetic. We have no offense. We have no offensive coordinator. Whit better make
some radical changes before he gets changed.
