"So is that 2 or 3 losses for Utah?"

It is actually 4 losses for Utah this year. The scoreboard confirms three of the losses (Stanford, USC, ASU) and the fourth loss was to BYU because BYU had the ball and a chance to win at the end of the game.

That BYU loss was the toughest because it was like 5 losses in a row to BYU (2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017). Even though the scoreboard says Utah won all 5 of those games, BYU gets credit for the victories because they "should have" won all five of them.

I can't remember the last time a Utah team couldn't get its defense off the field in third and long situations like these last few weeks. On the bright side, this loss has given old Cougar fan friends a reason to stop back in and say hello on the DN comment boards. I suspect that continued stinkfests from the Utes might prompt the whole gang to come back.

"I think the 6 point win over BYU now says it all. ECU spanked BYU worse than Utah did"

If you're going to play the comparative score card, you'd better wait to see how BYU-P does against San Jose State. Utah beat 'em 54-16, so to keep chanting your "beat us by 6" mantra, the coogs need to win by at least 32 points. Do you think your coogs can score 32 and shut out the Spartans?

    I didn't think so.

Hard to remember a Whit team looking so flat from kickoff to the end of the game.

Usually we could count on our defense to keep us in the game and they did a decent job limiting ASU to field goals on several drives, but what has happened to our pass rush? No pressure on opposing QB's and our offense looked completely lost.

    Very frustrating to watch.

When it comes to sports I love BYU winning at anything and Utah Utes losing at anything.
I'm so disappointed the Cougs can't show up on the field. Oh well. Never mind, BYU won't even beat a UMass team that just dropped 55 points on a team that looks just like BYU....ill prepared, poorly coached and zero mojo.

Here is hope for the utes. Coach Whit will make changes. He will not allow Oregon to drop 30 points and will likely take control of the D this week. He can see problems and correct them.
    Sitake can't.
Coach Whit will get the right QB behind center for Saturday. Williams or whomever, but he will fix that fiasco.
    Detmer and Sitake can't.
    Detmer and Sitake won't.
Detmer and Sitake don't have a clue what to do.

The nightmare for the utes is that yesterday they looked pathetic.
    Last week they looked competitive.

Now not so much. Not after SC dropped that game in SouthBend and looked as Pathetic as the u did yesterday.

Here is hopeful the u keeps making my Saturdays bright. My mighty (pathetic) cougars won't.

    Oct. 22, 2017 12:12 p.m.

    No excuses.

ASU had better players, a better team, and better coaching. Utah was beat soundly. At this point in the season Utah should hope for two more wins and a bowl invite. Tyler Huntley is still the better option at QB over Troy Williams. Huntley is the more talented and better player. If Williams played on Saturday the loss would have likely been worse.

Sad, sad day in salt city and provo.

Two months ago each fan base saw themselves "reaching for the stars." Unfortunately, it is "back to earth" time folks.

I had to stop watching BOTH games......they got so bad.

Mangum puts up over 319 yards passing, while it seemed to me like it was closer to 119 yds.

Huntley completed 21 of 35 passes.....problem is that 4 of the 21 were to the ASU defense.

I think the 6 point win over BYU now says it all. ECU spanked BYU worse than Utah did and the other P5 teams they played humiliated BYU. I think Utah would beat ECU, but not by much. This looks to be a disastrous year for both programs. BYU will be lucky to win another game this year and Utah is likely to lose 3 or 4 of the next 5.

It good to see that the little cougars our out and about trying to make themselves feel better for their outstanding victory in winning the worst team in the nation award!

As for Utah, Ouch! it was horrible in all phases of the game. Watching it was just brutal and very sad. It appeared the Ludwig had returned to sub in for the OC for most of the game. It also did not appear that the Tyler was very accurate and that may have had a lot to do with his arm strength because his passing was all over the place and his typical accuracy was not there. I also learned after the game that a lot of the D-line was still banged up from USC.

So Utah, It is time to put on you Big Boy pants and step up and make a play. No one did. In fact I don't think the team was really ready of the game.

Next week at Oregon (yes BYU, Utah has a real game, not a high school with a 1-7 record like you), Utah has an opportunity for redemption. PAC 12 play is not going to get any easier so Utah need to just pick themselves up, Play Utah football, Defense, run game, with quality passing and move forward.

"How many times are you gonna throw backwards to the sidelines, "

    Boy, isn't that the truth.

Looking for a solution? First of all we need to publically ask Chris Hill what his goal is. Is running around in the middle of the pack losing by one point..three points, a lot of times to the eventual winners ok with him and the school? It's not ok with the fans, but that's where we best.

Whittingham seems to be able to handle greatness when it's thrust on him (freak years with great talent), but doesn't seem to be able to create it, and that's the difference Chris doesn't seem to be able to make (unless mediocrity is an acceptable goal).

    Two observations characterize this.

First what is now the traditional lousy offense, and his pathetic attempts to fix it

Two, a lack of discipline throughout the whole team, and this is becoming usual. Most of the close losses in the past years have hung on penalties and sloppy execution.

This has to obvious to Mr. Hill so he needs to step up and say..what's up.

As a diehard BYU fan, I can say that Utah's loss to ASU is understandable IMHO.

Utah threw everything EVERYTHING at USC at the Coliseum and had their hearts ripped out when Williams didn't notice a wide open Carrington in the endzone. If Williams sees Carrington and completes the toss and catch, Utah comes out amped and fired up against ASU.

I think Tyler Huntley will be fine. He just needs to shake out the cobwebs again. Utah always seems one step from success where BYU seems to have a more systemic problem with Detmer and poor recruiting. Regardless, both teams seem demoralized right now. Good luck to both.

I am not from the state of Utah but I always want the inter-mountain schools to do well. I especially want opponents of BYU to do well. If the region seems to be mediocre in terms of football, many top recruits will not give any of the teams a second look.
Despite the annoying Ute trolls who inhabit articles about BYU, I was sad to see the Utes lose. I remember years ago (in basketball) when both BYU and Utah were ranked in the top ten. I would like to see that consistently happen in all sports.

And could both the BYU trolls and Utah trolls give it a rest for a while. Pretty pathetic to trash talk when that talk is about who is worst rather than who is best. After today, neither side has any bragging rights.

  • utahute69 Laguna Niguel, CA

Every year we keep hearing about the next OC and the next QB, but Utah's offense remains predictable and sluggish. I can't fine any major differences between this year's offensive plays / play calling vs past seasons. Plays are slow to develop, receivers seldom give the QB open shots, passes are mostly to the sidelines, third down passes are usually received short of the first down, and Utah either plays down to its competition or plays into its predictable game when playing better teams. After all the years of following Whitt, I must conclude that he is nervous about having a real hardcore and experienced OC. The exception to that observations are older very experienced OC's that pose no threat to Whitt's status on the field. I doubt that Taylor will be making a second year at Utah and I doubt his replacement will be an experienced D1 OC.

The only difference between BYU and Utah is that Utah is saying "just wait till next week" andd BYU is saying "just wait till next year"!

Utah is a disappointment and the PAC 12 is turning out to be the worst P5 conference in the country. I don't thing that the PAC 12 had won a big game yet this year.

ASU may be the team to beat right now. The Utes look like there destiny is once again in the middle of the pac12 south. Pretty sad, especially with all the talk we've been hearing from the folks up on the hill. Maybe it's time for another change at OC, maybe it's time for Kyle to go, or maybe the utes just can hack it. Hard to say but the Utes, Cougars and Aggies are all pretty sad this year with the Cougars being the worst of the 3.

Note to Troy Taylor.......take your elementary playbook back to the fcs.....seriously, your offensive play calls DO NOT work in a power 5 conference. After 7 games, thats enough with this offense, you need to go just like the last 500 off coordinaters....Bring Norm Chow back somehow!!!! The offense is exactly, but worse than any yr before!!!! How many times are you gonna throw backwards to the sidelines, the out routes are so old school!!!! Pass the ball over the middle, and not on 3rd down when the defense knows you are. To Utes83,

There are clearly some adjustments to be made, but as even the commentators noted, real life isn't like a video game. You can't expect a player to come back from injury and play as if he never left. This is especially true with a defense that plays as tough as ASU's has the last two weeks.

Sure, some might have believed that Huntley would magically fix any problems with the offense, but such adjustments take time.

And do you really think Bateman would have done any better against a defense that held Washington to just a touchdown?

If it hasn't been obvious for the last 13 years, and to everyone that isn't a Utah fan it has been obvious, then it should be obvious now that whittingham has absolutely no clue how to hire offensive coordinators. He's hire something like 12 of them and has never once gotten a good one, not once.
