My biggest surprise is what a complete bust Mangum turned out to be. His freshman year he looked to be a record setter in the making. Since then he has been terrible. Not sure what his problem is but at this point BYU really has no other options. BYU is really crashing as a football program...perhaps the reality of being an independent has finally sunk in? Let's say next year and the year after are more of the same ... it makes you wonder if BYU and the Church will be content allowing the football program to be a laughing stock of college football OR if they just pull the plug. I actually think all athletics at BYU will die if football dies since that is where all the $$ comes from. Even the most argent and faithful BYU Funnel Cake eaters will stop attending games unless the tickets are $5 a seat.

A couple of things BYU fans should avoid in the coming seasons:

    1. Don't make unrealistic predictions such as a 10-3 season prior to the season starting. It's sets the expectations too high for Cougar fans. I think if you check DN articles prior to the season starting, there were countless articles and speculations about the predictions for BYU prior to the year starting. Just let the season play out and see where you are.

    2. Stop comparing your team to the Utes. You're independent, and the Utes are in the PAC-12. The Utes play at least 9 P5 teams a year in conference play, which the competition being much more fierce than BYU playing 4-6 P5 teams during the season. The point is, it's not an apples to apples comparison. 7 in a row and 12 out of 15 in favor of the Utes should be the main indication. Frankly, I don't like playing BYU because we've moved on. The "rivalry" has become too contentious and bitter. As soon as our scheduled games run out, then stick a fork in it.....it should be done. Besides, I don't think BYU likes the continuing losing end of the game. That's not coming from a position of arrogance, it's just the reality of things.

    You echo my thoughts exactly.
Not taking any chances just to protect your QB’s fragile confidence is utterly ridiculous.
If Detmer feels like he needs to do that, then he absolutely has the wrong QB and
he has no business being an offensive coordinator.

Just a thought that the lack of live play in the preseason was a huge mistake. They barely beat an 0-6 Portland State. Pretty scary outlook for the rest of the season I am afraid. Looks like the defense is wearing down or something. No DL line push or OL push. Time to bench a few folks including Magnum. The coaches lack of confidence to throw on third and long is pathetic. What in the world do you have to lose at this point in the season and in any point in the game? Why run it repeatedly on third and long? Why not even try? If they have no confidence in Magnum's health or ability let somebody else throw it on 3rd and long? Ridiculous play calling continues. Tired of watching the safeties being out of place and being burned game after game.

@Cougar Forever and What to do—

Don’t kid yourself. None of the games on the remaining schedule are “certain wins.” We’re talking about a team whose offense is dead last in FBS football, and whose defense is around the 30 percentile. I don’t think the statistics back up the assertion that those teams are worse than BYU.

    I admire your optimism, though.

This team is not going to any bowl game this year and they certainly do not deserve to ... This could be the worst cougar football team in 50 yrs. Crowton was run out of Provo and he never had a season even close to this bad .... Upcoming losses to ECU , Fresno St. And Hawaii .. I would also not be surprised if UNLV takes it to them .... Time to clean house if there is any hope for the future of Cougar Football .....

    Oct. 15, 2017 8:26 a.m.

Well I have said it before and will keep saying it. The cougs have been over matched all season long. The AD has placed the team in the position, yes the coaches are not together, it was clear that was going to be the case when Detmer was hired. That should have never happened.

The kids are great group of guys, not as talented in the past, but because of the decision to be irrelevant by going independent the talent has all gone to power conferences and teams that compete in them - yes like Utah! You have to admit that the two teams have continued to go in completely separate directions over the past 7 to 8 years. It is all due to the schedule they play and the conference or lack of conference they are in.

Next week the struggling cougars will play a team with a similar record East Carolina. Then San Jose State, and UMass. BYU should win. But lets not start the chest beating and say "the team is back, here we come, we just needed to correct a few things". The fact is these teams are really bad and have been scheduled specifically to give BYU a Bowl opportunity which is not deserved this year!

The other three games Fresno, UNLV and Hawaii will be a toss up at best! 5 and 7

What hurts more, losing by a point at games end, in it all the way, or losing by 25 points a game that was lost before it started by the attitude of just trying to not lose by too big a blowout? That's Utah and BYU football on this Saturday.

Cougars are suffering from some malaise that has to do with more than athletic ability, and need to repent of their pride, their fears, and self-defeating behaviors, (penalties, mistakes, playing too conservatively, playing injured QB when healthy one (Critchlow) is available.

Utes need to learn how to get the D off the field, work on conditioning, and stay cool under pressure. It is good that they keep taking chances to win the game.

Football as with all sports can be character building. Nice to have a few victories, sugar that helps the medicine go down. Very seldom does an injured player help more than hurt a team.

  • sg newhall, CA

Like I said last week..it is time to look for another head coach and assistants. Sitake should never have been hired as the head coach. He stinks. Detmer should never have been hired as the offensive coordinator...he is offensive to what was and stinks. I am not surprised that recruits are leaving and going elsewhere. Tom Holmoe should be fired. He pushed for this deplorably failed hiring.

Cougar football is an embarrassment. Tanner should have been benched. He gets nervous when he is pressured and throws the ball into the ground. He isn't a scrambler. Sorry, but he stinks as well; and his receivers, although good athletes can't catch a ball even when it hits them in both hands...they stink. Please get rid of Sitake, he's way over his head.

We almost certainly will go to a bowl game (even with a 6-7 record) but it won't alleviate much of the pain incurred this season. Remaining games:

    At ECU -- certain win.

San Jose State at home -- certain win.

    At Fresno State -- toss-up.

At UNLV -- likely win (but possibly a tougher game than many of us initially thought).

UMass at home -- certain win (although we actually may have to do more than just show up
against UMass in view of how closely they kept it against Tennessee).

    At Hawaii -- likely win.

7-6 is a reasonable expectation. 6-7 may be more likely. But, again, it is highly probable that there will not be enough 0.500 and above teams to fill all the bowl slots and even if we end the season at 6-7 a bowl berth is virtually assured if we want it.

I have not read the posts. Do not want to. Was at the game today and that is not the BYU teams of old. Something is a miss. There is talent there but they look like they do not care or have no sense of urgency. Firing on 2 cylinders.

I love the coaches but when you are down 24 points and you run 3 run plays knowing you can not run on them and then punt to me this is a roll over dead plan. We need a team to fight and scratch and go for it. I would rather throw the ball and get some yards and maybe intercept than run 3 plays for 2 yards each and punt. Try please. The fans would like that. Go out swinging not tripping.

Something needs to change. Either players or coaches but both to me looked like they did not care. Being a fan for 40+ years this is not my BYU team. Time to take stock and have a come to Kalani meeting.

There may be a couple high school teams in rural Montana that tackle worse than the Cougs but it cannot be said for sure. I've never seen so many half-hearted tackle attempts at the college level. This team is as soft as lemon meringue pie.

Ghanwoloku should have run those interceptions back a lot further than he did. With that offense, you can't be holding the ball with both hands like you're Bronco Nagurski.

Some of BYU's situation can be forgiven as over 30 players have been injured this year in ways that caused them to miss games

i am sure many teams have many more players out this year and are still playing a decent game. Your depth chart should be able to cover a few minor injuries. That is what they are for. I am sorry this is just an excuse that has been used to many times and its the wrong reason for lack of good play.

It's a disappointing season, but those who take some sort of pride in kicking a team that's down are pathetic.

Utah is up on USC right now, that's impressive, but these ute fans, rather than watch their game, want to talk about how BYU's season is over.

We all know that BYU's season is over.

No real fan expected a win today, so enough about the outrage, at least we scored twice.

Yes it should say Kama'aina (Guess I'm not Hawaiian :) ) So what to say? I've thought that being an independent, with the contract extension with ESPN looming in the near future, that BYU needed a stellar yr....guess that won't be happening. I think the world of Sitake, Detmer and the rest of the coaches but something's definitely missing. Someone mentioned 30 hurt players...is that true? Anyway, this is a slow death for BYU football. Recruits leaving, conference rejection, maybe it's a sign? If Ricks (BYU-Idaho) and BYU-HI don't deserve to have sports and the culture it brings (so money can be spent elsewhere), maybe the double standard should end and BYU Provo should not have them either.

Enough with the “ lets be patient” with the coaches. BYU coaches have been pathetic top to bottom. I’m embarrassed by this group as a BYU alum. Holmoe needs to own up to his mistake and clean house. Why is Detmer still calling plays? Amazing that Detmer has taken two good QBs in Tanner and Taysom and made them both look horrible. A QB change won’t make a difference- new offensive coordinators might. Where is Sitake the great recruiter? Why didn’t he hit JUCOs hard for immediate impact players? Why are all our receivers 5’8 and running 5.5 40s.......I forked big $ for seats on the grass at BYU this year after buying into the hype and have felt swindled and robbed ....

  • BlueHusky Mission Viejo, CA
    Oct. 14, 2017 5:04 p.m.

Clearly, the offensive effort was geared to protect Mangum. Detmer's play calling last year was good. But the players from last year are gone and the short recruiting season makes a difference this year. Still, I think the missions are a major factor. Recruits from last year won't be in town for another year. This lag makes it really hard to fill needed positions. If I were coaching a BYU team, I'd go after non-LDS players big time.

This offense looked bad against Portland State. It has not improved a bit. That's kind of scary. Now we have a couple more key injuries on defense. I think BYU will be doing good to win three more games this year.

    P.S.
@ tinplater " How about no class in a loss (Memphis comes to mind)?"

I see you're from Arizona. I attended a BYU-Arizona game in Tucson, where the fans shouted "Obscenity You, BYU" over and over. As for Memphis, this was their second brawl. The first was at Ole Miss. BYU did not start that brawl.

    re: Co Ute,

I realize you're just trying to kick BYU when they're down, but besides that, do you really believe that a team's record is a reflection of the talent level of the players and nothing more?

So the 2011 Ohio State football team that went 6-7 that 3 years later won the NC had really poor talent?? Perhaps the coaching played a role when they switched to Urban Meyer?

I said nothing of their conditioning. Conditioning and talent do matter, but coaching seems to matter most in college football.

Simply put, I don't think this team was prepared for the season. Their talent level has not significantly changed in the past 10 years, but the coaching has changed significantly.

I just hope the coaches learn some lessons from this in how to prepare for a season.

    The truth:

I didn't watch the game. Didn't care to considering how things have looked this season. To me, it's both the talent and the coaching. I've said it before, the defense isn't getting enough 3 and outs. Who cares if what the offense is doing. They should still get 3 and outs. The offense, well Mangun is too predictable but the skill positions other than Bushman are lacking and non existent. It's a shame but I think the recruits will start go elsewhere as is the case now. The Y isn't what it once was and nor will it ever be as college football has changed significantly since the 80's.

Will it be 7-6 or 6-7? Even with 6-7 they could make a bowl game if the fans show up and show some enthusiasm (and the team puts some points on the board against weaker defenses). Not making a bowl is a killer not only for losing the extra practice time, but also recruiting. Is a coaching change needed? And if so, who would you hire? Gary Anderson? The coach at Weber State? Southern Utah? An assistant in the NFL? Some tough decisions ahead for the Y.

Holmoe is having the same impact on BYU football as athletic director that he had on Cal football as coach.

Meanwhile, the men's cross country team dominated the NCAA Pre-Nationals meet. I recommend BYU fans start hitching their self-esteem wagon to the XC team.

Keep your head up guys. We are seeing improvement... the offense crossed the 50 yard line.

Let's not "pump the brakes" too quickly haha.

Time for Bobby Ewing to step out of the shower. Please, let this all be a bad dream!

Biggest disappointment is not losing, but lack of intensity in the moment by this team and coaches, illustrated by the incidents at the end of 3rd quarter.

We get an interception and score a touchdown - it's 28-10. We then recover a fumble on the ensuing kickoff on Mississippi State's 25 yard line. 45 seconds left in the quarter.

With the momentum, do we strike downfield for a couple of quick pass plays to score, which the BYU-of-old would have done? Again this was before end of quarter, which would have made it 28-17 and put us in striking distance of the game and increased our momentum! No, no, instead we throw a dink out-pass, like a lateral play, gain nothing, then immediately go to the sidelines and burn the last 10-15 seconds of the quarter "conferencing" with one of the coaches.

BYU, do you realize you could have been just 2 scores from winning, and with the momentum, going into the 4th quarter if you just had the daring to strike and went "hurry-up"?

Some of BYU's situation can be forgiven as over 30 players have been injured this year in ways that caused them to miss games - as ESPN pointed out.

But what cannot be tolerated is lack of intensity - giving up.

Family History buffs. Is Sitake related to Tony Ingle? Generationally speaking?

BYU-P football has become so pathetic and low energy. It's contagious... I'm having a hard time even getting up the energy to comment on it anymore.

Detmer seems more intent on protecting his quarterback’s psyche than trying to win the game. Absolutely atrocious play calling. Mangum still zeroing in on his primary receiver and Critchlow is nowhere near his receiver. If Hoge is healthy, he should be the starter, because other than him, BYU has nothing at QB.

This BYU team has no easy games remaining due to their lack of off-season preparation.

From the first game of the season, they looked slow and tired which leads me to believe that they didn't put in the right kind of work in the off-season and now they're seeing those results. It's hard to catch up from that.

I hope the coaching staff realizes that they failed in the preparation stage for this season and makes changes to how they prepare next Spring.

10 points is more then I expected. This was an overachieving effort by the offense. Good things to come in the coming weeks as this offense is back on track,

A heretofore valiant BYU defense has given up. Sad to see. But what some weird play calling by Detmer.
