Ya know, one of the reasons why you guys are "midmajors forever", is because you're always trying to rest on your laurels from 20-40 yrs ago! The WAC is bush league, and everybody but the cougars know this. In fact, the WAC is so weak, it imploded. It doesn't even play football anymore. You Y fans bragging about 19 WAC titles would be like Utah fans bragging about our 18 pre-WAC football champions (to your zero).

    Football Conference Championships:
    Utah: 24
    "midmajors forever": 23

    Edge: Utah.

"...if can't win in the Conference you are in after this long....maybe it's time to pass the torch..."

Really? After only 6-yrs? If that were the metric, the Pac-12 would be the Pac-3, since Washington, Oregon, and Stanford are the only teams to have won the Pac-12 Championship. So are you suggesting that we need to boot out USC too?

    Not smart.

Yes I did. You really need to learn how to "follow along with a discussion"! That comment was CLEARLY addressed to "skywalker", and was refuting his assertion that Utah was "...a team that can't even win a division title...". He DIDN'T say that Utah was a team that couldn't win a "conference" title. He said "division". And since we HAD won a share of our "division", then that means that he was wrong!

And now YOU'RE wrong too, because you couldn't follow along with simple dialogue.

The only person you didn't blame was the head of the English Department. Sorry to hear you give up 1/4 of the way on things. The one thing I can't stand that you were right on is our Recievers are wearing gloves coated with Vaseline. I have never been so frustrated on that issue. Time and time again they drop passes put right on the money. They catch those- the quarteback gaines confidence and it opens up the run game and keeps the defense off the field. Proud of Navy Coach but run right run left and winning is worse than a dismal spread offense in a loss. Utah's about to get waxed by all but two teams. Acting like beating San Jose State as if they beat Ohio State, beating the Cougs in BYU's worst game ever by six (bottom 25). Never give up on Kalani!!

    How could this be?"

Good question, especially when considering that utah (a top 25 team) only beat BYU (17th worst team in the country) by 6 points and BYU had several chances to win. Something's not right and I don't think that it's the ranking of BYU (17th worst team in the country sounds fair).

Critiques of BYU's Offense? Can't think of an easier target right now. Embarrassing doesn't even begin to cover.

After last week I'm thinking the D wasn't far behind the O.

Perhaps we should consider forfeiting the last 9 games and start working on next years prep. i.e. recruiting, returning to the old Offensive scheme, Finding some receivers who can catch the ball, a QB capable of handling the pressure, and a coaching staff capable of adjusting to game conditions.

There is so much blame to pass around I'm in a quandary to even know where to start. So, I'll start at the top of the BYU Athletic Department... Holmoe has not been able to get us into a P-5 Conference and the truth is that he never will... He doesn't have the clout and the reputation that's needed to pull that off (heck, he can't even get ND to fulfill their contractual obligation)... Holmoe's lack of influence is not just with other ADs he obviously has little to no "pull" with BYU's own BOT... He couldn't keep the Lawyers and members of the BOT at bay when he was negotiating with the B12 and the BE 7 years ago; He can't get approval for competitive pay for the coaches (see Niumatalolo or Whittingham), and when was the last time the MC hosted an NCAA Championship game? Etc.

It takes a long time to establish a true pro style system, and once you do it's tough to stop.

Contrary to popular belief, BYU gets good recruits, so the recruits in a pro system would be tough to beat and would give a game to virtually anybody, making BYU a much better team.

Kalani and Ty are trying not to be bronco Mendenhall.

Do BYU fans want to be good but never great?

Personally I'm fine with a "meh" season, it happens, I want BYU to be an elite team in the future consistently.

This is what's realistically expected for the path that I see most likely to make BYU into what I want to see them become as a fan.

Sad to see Ty Detmer fail so badly. I really loved watching him play, and he brought the Heisman to BYU. Maybe BYU will offer him a graceful exit somewhere... but his pro-style offense and play calling is as bad as it gets. Sataki has to act, after this season.... or it will be HIS job that is on the line. I get the impression that Ty was convinced to accept this job, with some reservation about leaving his ranch in Texas. Sitaki, on the other hand is/was a "hot" up and comer coach. Successful at Utah and Oregon. He could keep growing to bigger and better.... unless he is derailed by an ineffective OC. It was painful to watch last year, even though Jamall and Taysom bailed Detmer out.....this year, its misery every week... and I don't see much hope coming. There is no easy way to fix this, without the coaching change. BYU fans have been waiting too long for something to cheer about.

BYU is being projected to play in a bowl game at the end of the season? How can this be? This is proof that there are way to many bowls and it makes a mockery of what bowl games should be about. The only bowl BYU should be eligible to play in is the "Toliet Bowl" and that's a stretch. They may not be good enough to play in this bowl!

Utah clearly outperformed us at LES this year and we likely would go 0-9 against the PAC-12 teams that Utah plays this year. The only PAC-12 team that we might beat is Oregon State (which is not on Utah's schedule this year).

However, I think that Utah will struggle to get bowl eligible this year. I expect them to lose against every upcoming team except Arizona State (ESPN's FPI agrees).

We all know that the FPI is a highly flawed metric but it predicts a 69.3% probability of an Arizona victory over Utah and having watched both teams play that seems about right (Arizona has a potent running game, unlike the last two teams Utah has played, and too much of Utah's rushing burden has been on their QB who also has gotten away with quite a few dangerous passes that could have been interceptions). Even if Utah goes 5-7 it might get a nod for a bowl game depending on whether there are enough 6-win teams available for all the bowl spots.

We, of course, are assured a bowl game spot by virtue of the weak second half of the season schedule but this already is a very unsatisfying year (and still will be even if we finish 9-4).

BYU played SDSU in their previous Poinsettia Bowl.

My family and I attended both games.

Both of BYU's Poinsettia Bowl opponents were more exciting than the pedestrian Indiana team, 9th in the Big Ten, that Utah played in the Foster Farms Bowl.

Utah fans feign interest in bowl games, but unless it's BYU or a BCS bowl, very few Utah fans actually show up.

    Bowl attendance comparison

2016 Poinsettia Bowl = 28,114 (BYU vs Wyoming) (capacity 70,561)
    2015 Poinsettia Bowl = 21,501

2016 Foster Farms Bowl = 27,608 (Utah vs Indiana) (68,500 capacity)
    2015 Foster Farms Bowl = 33,527

    2016 Las Vegas Bowl = 29,286
2015 Las Vegas Bowl = 42,214 (BYU vs Utah) (capacity 40,000)

The Las Vegas Bowl has never had fewer than 40,000 in attendance when BYU was one of the participants. The same cannot be said of Utah.

This is a very strange BYU team. They're not as bad as they look. How would Utah have done with BYU's schedule? They'd be 2-2. But in fairness, nobody expected BYU to stink like this. After losing their key offensive players to the pros, it is clear that nobody is ready to run the Detmer offense this year. Yet.

As for our Utah friends, they play at Washington, at USC, at Oregon. They have UCLA and Stanford at home. I predict 3 losses there and Utah will get the Also Mentioned Bowl against 6-6 Iowa State. I recommend Utah fans commenting on BYU-P enjoy it while you can. Hopefully, that running QB won't get busted up - he's legitimate. He goes down, and Utah will be lucky to get any bowl.

Some coaches use a type of reverse psychology by lamenting how bad their teams are when they are really good.
Other coaches do just the opposite, always being positive even when the players are not so good.
BYU coaches have taken the second method. Should have been a warning when the coaches could not really decide on a solid starting running back. And when, despite some returning receivers, we were told that we would come to know this new group of nameless receivers. So far, except for a very few good catches, these receivers remain unremarkable.
Still, I remain optimistic and believe that this coaching staff will bring BYU back. Could have folded the tent and gone home after the Crowton meltdown, but the Cougars had a pretty good run under Bronco. A bowl game every year.
So forgive me if I don't engage in the weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth. Yet.

Not even close, these teams in 2017. The stench of dead Cougar can be smelt all the way here in Boston. I get rebuilding years--all non-Saban and non-Meyer teams have them. But, BYU should never scrape the bottom of NCAA stats on both sides of the ball no matter who they are playing or what new offense is being implemented. The defensive stats are definitely inflated and absolutely a product of the O's ineptitude but, c'mon. That said, hope springs eternal. Sitake and Detmer are very smart and will return the team to being competitive by end of year and hopefully with momentum going into 2018. Being a ranked team again is several blue chip skill players away but, I'd like to see us at least show massive improvement in our pending defeats against MSU and BSU. C'mon Cougs! It never should have been that close. Or, perhaps the Utah team currently in the Top 25 is overrated. Either way, it should be a concern for Coach Whit and Ute fans everywhere."

Seriously? Had a chance to beat them in the 4th qtr? Wow. SMH
Most teams are overrated at this point in the season, its just nice to move on to conf play and stop with the small ball.
Its nice being in a conf and having a season to look forward too.

    Bluecoug,

This has got be really embarrassing for you as a byu fan. You remembered who Utah played, but forgot who byu played in their bowl games last year, yet you claim that byu's bowl opponent was much more exciting than Utah's.

Just doesn't make sense, does it?

Here's what you need to do, just come back and admit that you forgot who byu played last year in their bowl game. Always admit when you make a mistake. It hurts your credibility when you try to cover it up or just run away from it.

    "But, SJSU is not USC."

    Vermonter:

    *sigh*

After using BYU-P (and its games against P5 teams) as a poor measure of Utah this year, suddenly you want to move the goalposts and now compare Utah's opponents?

Nobody said SJSU was USC. But we know USC, we've always played USC tough, and we've actually beaten USC a couple of times--even when they were good. So, when the coogs can actually beat a quality P5 opponent, maybe we'll listen to your BYU-P comparisons.

"San Diego State(11-3), winner of the MWC West division, was a MUCH more exciting bowl opponent for BYU, than Indiana(6-7), a team that hasn't won a bowl game in THIRTY years, was for Utah."

Didn't byu play Wyoming last year? I guess that game was SO exciting for you that you.....forgot who they played.

So when did byu play 11-3 SDSU in a bowl game?

    Do tell.

I have a feeling this is about to be an embarrassing moment for you.

Our offense deserves to be lambasted by national writers. Those guys just don't have it together. You'd think that after Detmer had a full season last year that this year we'd really start rolling, but nooooo, now it's being called "a rebuilding year" with a lot of "young and inexperienced players." Where have I heard those excuses before.

This game against USU, sad to say, is going to be very telling for this program. If our offense is lousy against them and we lose then we have some really serious issues and I wouldn't have any hope of beating BSU and maybe a couple of other G5s on our schedule, Hawaii being one of them. An L at Miss St is already a given.

    @JohnInSLC.
    I like your optimism.

But, SJSU is not USC. And, Arizona is not USC. In fact the bottom half of the PAC 12 is not that much better than the MWC. So, if Utah is looking good after the Arizona game, I still would not be too confident.

Remind us the last time Utah-SLC played in a CFP or NY6 bowl.

The truth is, you've never even been a legitimate contender...

Would love to see a Memphis-BYU-P rematch. However, they are currently among three teams being talked about regarding a NYD 6 Bowl invite. Unfortunately, just like the BCS, that's something that BYU-P never has and never will experience.

"The worrisome thing for the U is . . ."

    Vermonter:

Not really. In the rivalry game the Utes always seem to play down to the competition. No question they were sloppy which let BYU-P hang around. As usual, the coogs weren't good enough to take advantage.

Utah was much more disciplined against SJSU, a team equivalent to the coogs, and the results showed.

BYU's troubles may not be over. Looks like Koy Detmer may start in the USU game. Ankles sprains can be as bad or worse than a fracture and Hoge may not play as he was dinged. Still it is surprising that Utah and BYU game rather close considering BYU has not got its acts together this year. Still the current 1-3 or so loss is not unexpected
